The Sign is visible from afar, seeing it from a good viewpoint is better than up close, as it is 45 feet high (13.7 meters) when you are close to it you will not be able to view it.There are few locations that are considered a Hollywood Sign viewpoint including the Griffith Observatory, the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue…etc. If you insist on getting close to the Sign you have to know that it is illegal to come close to the Sign except from behind, make sure to find the best trail and follow the legal trail, and do not wander around, finally the hike is difficult so prepare yourself with good hiking shoes and lots of drinking water.

The trail entrance is by the closed green gate. Do not turn away thinking your trip to the sign is over before you start! Very friendly residents, just be polite and keep noise to a minimum in the early morning or late evening. The trail actually ends behind the sign! Bring water and please do not leave a mess behind. Being a slow paced walker and taking a lot of pictures, I was able to reach the top in roughly 2 hours. My journey began much further down the street to respect residents and follow the signs of no car entry. Walking/hiking is the fun of the journey anyways, a couple extra miles dosent hurt.

The Hollywood sign is a must on your places to visit in LA. We took an adventurous route up the hill by car and loved every winding road and the amazing views. We visited during the day and night just to get the full experience. Too bad it’s not lit up like years ago, but still an awesome experience.

If youre visiting Los Angeles, you cant leave without a good photo of the Hollywood sign. You shouldnt have a problem finding the sign, but taking a good picture is hard without a DSLR camera. Your phone camera might not be able to get the job done. With that being said, you should still be able to find a good spot to take a picture of the sign if you have a car and are willing to drive to a good vantage point.

Great place to visit at least once in your life with friends or family. This Hollywood Sign is located in Hollywood Hills, LA, California, which was created in 1923, Design by Architecture Thomas Fisk Goff and made with Wood and Sheet Metal. But nowadays around 1978 changed into Steel only. This sign is 45 feet tall and 350 feet long in size.

There is a trail for anyone that is interested in seeing much closer. During weekends and holidays, finding places for a photo shoot can be quite difficult, but not impossible.

The Hollywood Sign (formerly the Hollywoodland Sign) is an American landmark and cultural icon overlooking Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. It is situated on Mount Lee, in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains.HOLLYWOOD is spelled out in 45 ft (13.7 m)-tall white capital letters and is 350 feet (106.7 m) long. The sign was originally created in 1923 as a temporary advertisement for a local real estate development, but due to increasing recognition, the sign was left up.The sign has been a frequent target of pranks and vandalism across the decades, but it has since undergone restoration, including the installation of a security system to deter vandalism. The sign is protected and promoted by The Hollywood Sign Trust, a nonprofit organization, while its site and the surrounding land are part of Griffith Park. The sign makes frequent appearances in popular culture, particularly in establishing shots for films and television programs set in or around Hollywood. Signs of similar style, but spelling different words, are frequently seen as parodies. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce holds trademark rights to the Hollywood Sign.Visitors can hike to the sign from the Bronson Canyon entrance to Griffith Park or from Griffith Observatory. There is also a trailhead near the Lake Hollywood Reservoir outside of Griffith Park, and although not an access point in itself, there is a popular scenic vista point around Lake Hollywood Park near the trailhead. The sign was erected in 1923 and originally read HOLLYWOODLAND. Its purpose was to advertise the name of a new segregated housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. H.J. Whitley had already used a sign to advertise his development Whitley Heights, which was between Highland Avenue and Vine Street. He suggested to his friend Harry Chandler, the owner of the Los Angeles Times newspaper, and the lead investor in the syndicate that was developing Hollywoodland to make a similar sign to advertise their land. Chandler liked the suggestion and approved a plan to construct the sign.Real estate developers Woodruff and Shoults called their development Hollywoodland and advertised it as a superb environment without excessive cost on the Hollywood side of the hills. They contracted the Crescent Sign Company to erect thirteen south-facing letters on the hillside. The sign company owner, Thomas Fisk Goff (1890–1984), designed the sign. Each letter was 30 ft (9.1 m) wide and 50 ft (15.2 m) high, and the whole sign was studded with around 4,000 light bulbs. The sign flashed in segments: HOLLY, WOOD, and LAND lit up individually, and then as a whole. Below the Hollywoodland sign was a searchlight to attract more attention. The poles that supported the sign were hauled to the site by mules. The project cost $21,000, equivalent to $320,000 in 2019.The sign was officially dedicated in 1923. It was intended only to last a year and a half, but after the rise of American cinema in Los Angeles during the Golden Age of Hollywood, the sign became an internationally recognized symbol and was left there.Over the course of more than half a century, the sign, designed to stand for only 18 months, sustained extensive damage and deterioration. The letter H was destroyed in the 1940s. According to one account, the signs caretaker Albert Kothe, driving while intoxicated, was nearing the top of Mount Lee when he lost control of his vehicle and drove off the cliff directly behind the H. While Kothe was not injured, his car and the letter H were both destroyed. The Hollywood Sign Trust disputes this story, and instead says that the H was felled by heavy winds in early 1944.In 1949, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce began a contract with the City of Los Angeles Parks Department to repair and rebuild the sign. The contract stipulated that LAND be removed to spell Hollywood and reflect the district, not the Hollywoodland housing development.

Beautiful and iconic place to visit while in LA. The views of LA from this hill is amazing even though the city is covered most of the time with a dense fog that makes it not always completely clear except in perfect weather conditions. Try to visit it in the afternoon so you can enjoy the views during daytime and night, Im sure youll love both. TIP: To get here just type in your Google Maps app 3390 Deronda Dr as your destination and follow all the instructions, the road is winding and gets really tight in some parts so dont go too fast. Ignore any sign that says there is no access to the sign, when you get there, at the end of your trip try to park in a legal place not obstructing the driveways of the people living in the area, youll see a metal big white door with some warning signs, just ignore it, on your left side youll see a little concrete entrance painted in white as well, go through it and youll see right in front of you a path to get to the sign, if you are a hiker and want to get a much closer view of the sing you can keep hiking and if you dont, after a few steps youll get a really nice position close enough to take perfect pictures of the sign and the city as well. Exciting experience. I loved it. If you visit LA this is a must do.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Los Angeles. I think word is starting to get out but it is possible to hike to the top of the sign for free! You can follow a paved path all the way from the park at the base of the mountain. It is a wonderful and relatively easy hike for beginners and worth every step for the epic view of LA from the top. I would come either early before it gets too hot or in the evening before the sun sets. Just a heads up, there is a no drone zone all along the hike so dont lug one all the way up there to be disappointed you cant fly it!

Go early, no later than 7:00 am to secure a parking spot at the entrance which only has about 20 parking spaces, and avoid sun burn as no shades along the 2.5 miles one way up. No temp toilet and nowhere you can relieve your nature call, except some hidden bush corner along the road.

Obviously a must see for visiting California and Los Angeles in general. We took my mom to see it when they visited and she complained that the sign wasn’t white enough (moms, am I right?) Anyway, it was accessible and the small hike up the hill was good exercise. There’s plenty of parking on the morning we went but I can imagine at later times it would be difficult to find parking. I would recommend going early in the morning and getting there when the sun rises. It’s such a pretty spot and a good memory to make.

What a great hike up to the front of the sign. We didn’t go up behind as it was getting dark but we’re happy we went to the front to see the sign as close as we could. Our 8 year old made the hike and enjoyed it. We went at sunset and it was beautiful. We parked by the Bronson Canyon/caves and hiked up from there. The gate sign said it would be locked at sunset but there seems to be a bit of a buffer as we stayed up top until sunset then hurried down and it wasn’t locked. Was a nice wide path that went up most of the time so be prepared for the hike.

Everyone knows the Hollywood sign. Its as famous as the movie capital of Hollywood itself. However, not many people know that you can actually climb up to behind the sign and get awesome views of LA. There are a number of routes you can take. Some are incredibly easy and take around 30 minutes (if you want to cheat and start from one of the residential areas) but like our group, if you enjoy a challenge and are in reasonable shape, you can do the proper hiking trail which takes around 1.5 hours from the griffith observatory. We parked in the Greek Theatre car park (since its free) and hiked all the way from there. There are maps posted along the way so you cant really get lost and there are water fountains placed periodically along the trails. Doing the trek was one of the highlights of our trip and if you have the time and are able bodied, I would highly recommend it!
