Go here when theres no cover and its cool. when you get a shot theyre its huge. i think it was served in a wheel barrel, it was gnarly. everyone that i came with was hammered. a buddy of mine cartwheeled into the pool tables. theres normally a weird band playing and you can play pool.

Favorite jazz venue hands down (of all of California). The caliber of artists that come thru on a regular basis is amazing, and it’s not a coincidence why that is the case. The staff and owner have a deep appreciation for music and it is reflected by the atmosphere of the room. The drink selection ranges from 8-13 usually, with some nightly specials that are pretty nice. I have yet to try the food but they do look and smell tempting when they come by.Overall, an intimate and wonderfully sounding venue that is worth a visit.Pictured: artists Pedro Martins and Louis Cole.

The house cocktails at Baobab are like nothing youll find anywhere else---without getting on a trans-Atlantic (or trans-Pacific, depending on your route) plane flight, that is. In making their drinks, Baobab takes five primary ingredients---hibiscus, orange, tamarind, ginger and cranberry---throws in a little liquor (vodka, whiskey, rum or tequila), and calls it a day (or rather Tooni, Tatu, or Salaan).

You come here for the music, for the show, and yet the atmosphere is laid back like a bar. Its worth the cover charge, $10 - $20. Its so hard to find good quality live music, and its even harder to find a bar set up in a manner in which the band central to the experience, and not just background music. Its great to have a venue that plays live jazz right in the heart of DTLA. The place is located on the 3rd floor in a little plaza in the NE corner. It can be a little confusing to find the first time. There seems to be plenty of street parking past a certain hour when most concerts are taking place.I live close by so I always Uber it.Their calendar is consistently full will different jazz bands.Entrance was $15 for students (either ID or email works as proof, as long as u prove ur a student), or $20 general entrance fees.$13 for a Malbec which I think gets the job done.I walked in late, but the music lasts a pretty good amount of time. It starts at 9:15pm, but seems to usually end around 11:30/midnight-ish...They got some good artwork too.

First and foremost, drinks were great. People were great. Passed the vibe check. I do need to say something about the experience though. This was my first time visiting a jazz club. The group that was playing (Josh Nelson, Discovery) that night were also trying something new with the setup of their band in the club. Instead of having all the band on one side of the club, they set everything up in the middle of the room. My group, having never been to this establishment, unknowingly chose the seats where the instruments are usually set up. Even with a sound check, the sound was very off, especially on one side of my ears. This persisted, and kind of created some disillusionment with this establishment that I heard great things about. Also, my group complained later about the band being 30 min late, and being forced to watch a lady draw something of that of a 5 year old.

Great live music here for jazz enthusiasts in a hidden gem in a mall in Little Tokio. This place is awesome but its meant for serious music listeners. This is not a place to talk to your friends/date with background music: come here if you want to actively listen to some great musicians in a relatively intimate setting. Theres typically a reasonable cover charge (see their website for pricing, but usually around $15-20). The bar inside has a good selection of drinks and food at reasonable prices. A girlfriend and I was in the mood for some live music on a Sunday night and found this gem through some research. Its located in the Weller Plaza in little tokyo on the 3rd floor at the oppostie corner of Orochon Ramen. Doors opened at 8pm and there was a $15 cover. The place itself is a decent size with a bar to the left upon entering the front door, which then led to seating area and stage. There were cushion seatings along the walls and in between rows of some sturdy plastic chairs. On a Sunday night, the crowd was small and intimate with about 30+ people. The crowd consisted of a mixed racial group, some solo attendees, some group of friends, and a few couples. There were 2 parts to the show with a 30min break in between. Some stayed for the first half and left at the 2nd half, we stayed for the whole show. I loved seeing how passionate these artists were and how close I was to be able to see/feel their full expression through their instruments.Since this was my first time here and each night would vary depending on the band, I thought it was an overall good intimate experience where I would definitely recommmend others to check it out.

Great bar with a vibe that fits the name. Its tucked away underground in Gaslamp, and all the bartenders wear are dressed up in prohibition era clothing. It wouldnt be fitting if it was called anything else! The colour scheme is a black and red underground vibe, but classy. Great place to come and enjoy some love music with a good drink.Be prepared to pay a cover charge for the music - basically a cover to enter the bar. I think the music is well worth the 5$, especially if that is your thing. Great bar to come to that makes itself stand out.Other than that, the drinks menu is pretty standard.

The lounge is beautiful with great view of the city, the design of the floor glasses is also iconic and classic. But the experience is less legendary, maybe due to its popularity. Came here on Saturday around 6:30 pm, the place was already packed, my friend and I had to sit in the less scenic corner, my drink was way too sweet, I could barely move across the room by 7 pm. And its not the kind of lively busy, the clientele was, well, a somewhat interesting mix, sometimes I feel like Im in a crowded off-strip small casino in Vegas.

Great atmosphere, good music, but a terrible bartender. Waited for acknowledgement from the bartender. Sst at the var made eye contact and he still wouldnt approach me. After getting drinks, he lagged on getting payment. I wanted to walk out on the bill because after asking for the check he turned his back and continued talking to the barback. Took three to 4 minutes until he finally came over and left the mobile credit card machine for payment, still no communication just him talking to the barback. I only see myself coming back for the music, but the full on bar experience where youd think would be advantageous to make revenue on.

Went here on a Thursday night for business drinks and it was such a great and hip place to meet up with someone. The decor and ambiance is stellar and so detailed. Our menu was an old leather book that had these great weather pages. And it was still very easy to read. The second i walked in, the place was lively but found a seat right away. As i sat down our server asked if i needed anything while i waited and i felt that he was very attentive through out the whole night. We ordered some appetizers (Fries and Brussel sprouts) which both were great! i love salty fries and these where outstanding! I know not a lot of people like that but for me, they where spot on. The Brussel sprouts also where in this spicy yet savory balsamic glaze type thing and it was just at the bottom so you still got the crunch of the Brussel sprout and dipped as much of the sauce you wanted on to it. and i know its just iced tea but the black ice tea was so refreshing! I will doe sure be coming back here again anytime i have drinks or dinner on that side of town.

Many of the reviews here are clearly about other places with similar names; the guy who thinks its in the Gaslamp District must have had a few on the 120-mile cab ride. This is a serious jazz club in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. Its theme is not tiki or speakeasy, but genteel jazz club that has blue furniture. They serve bar food but not meals. If you come here on a casual date, you are not getting anywhere unless she really likes jazz. This is the kind of place where casual conversation during performances is not really appropriate.Often has USC grad student acts, classical-jazz fusion, and other innovative stuff. Clientele of serious jazz fans. Many of the seats are uncomfortable, so get there early if you have back problems or mobility issues. Its hard to find, on the third floor of a (nice) minimall. Near LT Gold Line stop and walkable from Union Station red/purple line, but the Metro closes before the endtime of most shows. (Hey, Joon, Id come to your place once a week if the show times were 90 minutes earlier!)

This is one of my favorite speakeasies/bars of all time. Everything is totally tiki, and the bar itself is themed like a pirate ship. You can watch the bartenders toss one obscure ingredient after another into your drink, creating a masterfully crafted cocktail sure to transport you straight into an 1800s Caribbean.Last night was my second visit. I ordered one of my favorite drinks, Lei Lani Nouveau (interesting and well-balanced, but sweet -- skip if you dont like sugar!). After taking a few sips, another bar-goer knocked it out of my hand, and the (mostly full) glass shattered on the floor. Three employees hurried over to sweep and mop up the mess, each one instructing my boyfriend and me not to try to help to protect our hands from broken glass. We apologized and thanked them for helping. Right as the last employee was finishing cleaning up our mess, a bartender brought over a perfect new Lei Lani Nouveau and handed it to me, telling me not to worry about it. Not only did we not have to ask for a new drink, they didnt even have to ask me what Id ordered to remake it! They handled it so professionally and kindly, five minutes after losing my drink theyd totally erased the situation.

It has the ambiance of a classic old ship below deck: sumptuous dark wood, white and gray marbled table tops and classic wooden dinette chairs. Noise level was averageand I really enjoyed the eclectic music played on the PA system. Horse-shoe shaped bar with nice clean restrooms. This would absolutely e a great addition to a bar crawl.
