It was my first time at this National Park. I never knew we had Fossil Beds so close to home. Not to many people were there. This place is good to visit during fall or early mornings during summer days as it has no shade. Didn’t see to much vegetation but its a dessert so cant expect much. The scenery is nice and to know that there is so much history makes it a well worth visit.
Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument is very cool. I enjoyed my trip here. Mammoths, lions and camels once roamed along wetlands just north of what is now known as Las Vegas, Nevada. Their history is preserved at Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument and is ready to be discovered. I cant wait until we visit again. My family had a blast.
Its beautiful.. other than as any nature place people always leave garbage behind and we should clean up after ourselves!! But its an amazing view and great hiking are!!
If you go to the end of Durango, it is peaceful. There is some trash from not so clean Vegas people but it is nice walking on top of the beds. There are a few doorways that make it easy to get to the top. Some areas were used as a dumping ground. However where I was today, was quiet and the soft breeze was refreshing.
I would give this 5 stars - merely for the beauty of the rock formations, flowers, and wild life. However, there was a lot of beer bottles smashed and graffiti on the rock walls. Its really aggravating that anyone would feel the need to do that, people should respect nature and leave it as it was before. It was like a small Grand Canyon, cliffs and pathways, valleys, caves, arch ways. A nice relaxing walk with mountains on all sides. Its amazing what nature is capable of.
Well... its a lot more interesting than we expected and we will come back.On the surface it doesnt look like anything but once you cross the barrier fence and approach the dunes of dirt, it becomes clear that youre standing in the middle of a deep bed of fossils.Apparently long ago this area was the bed of an inland ocean. I say ocean because I am unaware of corral in a fresh water lake... but who knows.Back in the day before this area was designated a national monument we would offroad in the area but never really paid any attention to the enormous amount of coral and other fossil that cover every square foot of ground in this area.Drawbacks... it is trashed up pretty bad. There is very little signage or anything to explain what you can expect to see.But catch a cool fall or spring morning or evening because otherwise its HOT and there is no shade, water, restrooms, or other accommodations anywhere nearby....
So beautiful! Perfect for portraits!
Where to get your National park stamp! There are a few information booths around the Tule Springs Fossil beds but no defined trails or visitors center. But if you drive up to the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Visitor center 10 -15 miles north 95 you can get both stamps there. We liked the “info booth” and view best off Durango Road. We didn’t see anything near “The Big Dig” off Horse road.Overall Interesting history that this is the largest area of prehistoric fossils in the US (Giant woolly mammoths and saber tooth tigers, etc). More info available on the Protectors of Tule Springs Fossil Beds. No families only a sign, but you can hike out through the Nevada wash.
Great place to catch a nice constellation shot. Caught URSA Major and hope I caught Neowise in a separate shot.
It is a good place for biking and easy hiking. No public facility! But, it is next to the city limit. easy access!
Great hike beautiful scenery
Love the area its great for hiking . I take my dogs and let them Rome freely ans np issues . They are clinking and running all over the place. Great place to go if you want low Impact hiking mainly flat lands.
Super simple and no facilities. I geeked out on the difference in geology of this area. Not much to see but to walk around and know that this is an ancient lake and there has to be tons of fossils buried. Im glad this area is protected.
Difficult to find Big Dig site.
Nice place to go for walks with the family
Huge expanse of land to explore. Its made up of fossilized coral. Great area to spot wildlife and hike.No public amenities
Fun as hell to hike and great place to go shoot
Ok scenery, but not sure what to look for as far as fossils.
I love looking for fossils and cool stones. If you do also then you will enjoy Tule Springs Fossil Beds. That is all there is to do. No visitors center. No bathrooms. Trails are pretty weak. You need to wear good solid footwear. Best bring water and snacks too.Good place to walk with your dog. Good place for kids if they enjoy messing around and are interested in fossils, rocks, lizards and dirt.
Pretty neat are. I like finding unique places. Just walked around on the trails and admired the beauty around us
Awesome dunes and hidden trails. Great for mountain biking and exploring with the kiddos.
The place is interesting for spending an hour with kids who may find fun going through the lava beds. Unfortunately its also full of broken glass, poop and bullets.
Neat area. Very windy the day we visited. Found no fossils, but was still nice
Nice place to explore!!
This is a very new monument. No Visitor Center, lots of trash. As a local, probably a good place to visit. Traveling through collecting stamps in your Passport America book, dont waste your time.
Pretty out there desolate place... being lots of water.
Good place to stretch your legs and have a fun little hike around.
Primative entrance; go ahead and walk right in! Once you walk out to the dunes past the moop you will find wind carved tunnels, waddies and stratified rocks scattered across the desert floor.
Cool place, cant wait to see how they further develop it.
Just a beautiful place
Great relaxing quiet spot on edge of town. My go to spot to catch the sunrise and sunset off the rocks and mountains.
Use this as a hiking spot and way to get into nature without having to leave the city. The bluffs are interesting and not hard to explore but the terrain can be rocky in spots. Good hiking shoes and ankle support recommended. Good access to backcountry desert areas close in to Las Vegas. There is a trail system, but it is rocky and can be tricky in some places. The farther out you go across the North Vegas Wash the less developed the trails become and in some areas its best to hike crosscountry off the trails. We are out there several times a week with the dogs. Great place to see the Mojave Desert in its natural state.
Nothing to see. Its fenced off. Its only a NP to protect the area.
Very peaceful and serene!
Really awesome and interesting place to spend a little alone time with yourself... or others.
Great place to look for fossels and skate ️
Great place to get out anf hike around
Disappointing. The pics for it make you think that that there is something there. Its nothing, no one to talk to/ask abt fossils, ect.
It was just ok. The coral beds were neat.
For being an out of towner, we were very disappointed in the fossil beds. There was no information about what we were looking at or the history behind it, like most other natural attractions. When we decided to walk around we discovered that the fossil beds have turned into the local spot for walking dogs, drinking and setting off fireworks, all evidenced by the huge amount of litter covering this area. We did not stay long, to say the least.
Hard to find entrance. Bring plenty of water.
A gem to go on a short hike looking for fossils. If you dont know what real fossils look like, youll miss them, like a previous reviewer. Lots of coral fossils. Unfortunately there is a lot of broken glass, trash, and dog poo as well.Keep your eyes open for jackrabbit, lizards and rattlesnake (we saw a dead one). And always bring plenty of water!
Very nice peaceful place to walk, jog or run and fun if you can take a to ride or a mountain bike . Stay hydrated during the summer.
I love this place
Awesome nature ... not much people there so very peaceful
Amazing hiking and scale crawling adventures area. ....great place to take pictures and RC Area .thanks
Very entertaining. A lot to observe. Not much around in the area to do except for the atea.
Beautiful place
Its awesome green space, an oasis, 15-20 mins from downtown Vegas!
The monument is a stop sign post with a placard on it. Good luck finding a fossil or even knowing where to go.
Seinery nice nothing to see
Great trails
If you must go, I suggest you go on a CROWDED day like Sunday where there are lots of people. In the morning preferrably, in case you get hurt. Go with a partner. Do not go alone with your toddler, just in case you get hurt. This is because there appears to be shooting in the area and I am afraid someone may get hit by a stray bullet. There are lots of glass broken into millions of shards that look like it was hit by a bullet, NOT thrown and broken which would result in bigger chunks. I think people are throwing the glass bottles in the air and using it for target practice.
Love this place. This is one of my most favorite places a well-kept secret and one of the many attractions other than casinos low cost low budget Great Adventure
I saw lots of coral fossils . It was very expansive and would be fun to ride a bike out there . A lot of ground to cover on foot . can anyone recommend a book on fossils in this area so I know what I’m looking at?
There is no restroom or other facilities for humans. If you take the main trail that veers to the right from the parking area, you will soon see a cave. The Cave is actually a tunnel that leads into interior of the bad ones. It was kind of fun discovering this tunnel. It is also a good place to walk your dogs. I saw a number of locals walking their dogs while I was there. I think I saw a dispenser for dog poop bags by the trailhead. The site is very important for the preservation of fossils. For most people its probably a boring place to visit - unless youre a paleontologist.
We enjoyed hunting for fossils. No rest rooms, limited vistas.
No visitor center yet. With no information, better to wait for the monument to fully develop
Great views of Gass peak.
Different kind of park monument. You get no information, you just walk around.
Interesting, easy hiking
Beautiful but I see bullet casings on the ground and broken glass which means people are tossing bottles in the air and ysing it as targets. I wouldn’t want to be on the ground when glass shards or a stray bullet may hit me in this vast, wide open space.
Another hidden treasure in Las Vegas who would think you could find these kinds of places so close to town this is an early man site just outside of town where you can look for fossils and refect on what life was like when the mammoth roamed and man was the one being hunted
If youre reading reviews that says its a good place to barbecue with green belts and water this is not that place! The location at the end end of Durango is desert barren,no water, no Services, no shade, no Park Rangers, no buildings its just desert with a sign and thats it . Beware of Rattlesnakes!!! And is home to the local drug dealers. Absolutely tons of Broken glass Broken Glass and more broken glass everywhere all over the parking area all over the park. Broken bottles Galore. If you bring your dog theres a good chance their feet will get cut. This was made a National Monument for preservation purposes . Someday it will be an open park with Rangers and Facilities but at this time there is nothing . Its still active shooting in the area. Massive dump area!! Trash, household trash appliances clothing construction trash Builders trash. Dumped everywhere all up and down Moccasin Road for miles all the way to the 95. The city used to put out huge dumpsters for people to put their dumping in but no longer. Its absolutely terrible dumping.. Please report dumping.Head for Red Rock if youre looking for beautiful hiking, scenery, Park Rangers and Emergency Services.
Okay, so this national monument hasnt been developed yet. There are some parking spots and a sign. Theres a gap in the fence and at the visitor center in Boulder City we were told we could walk around. So we did. Im sure there are plans to make some accessible paths, etc. But for now theres not. You walk down the embankment and through the fence and then just sorta free roam on your own. No visitors center, no toilets, no shelter.
My wife and I were a little disappointed as you come to a sign that tells you youre there and thats it. We were expecting more LOL
I love bringing my kids and dogs out here. So close to home, yet feels far from civilization.
New NPS National Monument. Facilities still in development. They do have guided tours of the fossil beds.
Awsome views fun places for the dogs
If you like to look for fossils this is your kind of place.
Good place to escape the lights.
Nice places when is fresh. I would not recommend it on summer.
Nice place to go
This is one of my favorite places to take my dog for a walk and run...lol watch out if they chase rabbits. You get to go up and down the beds so it makes for a great work out. Beware and watch for broken glass. A lot of idiots shoot bottles.
I love this place. If you know what you are looking at this place is incredible. It is too bad that many people use it as a dump
Google maps took us to the wrong end of the park.
We go here all the time with our dogs. they love walking out there and finding lizard and chasing rabbits that they will never catch. it is nice and quiet and a great place to go with dogs to enjoy being away from everything
Great fun for family & dog, easy trails to follow, beautiful view of the mountains.
Its new and expect a few years for any walkways or visitors centers. The Best way to have the monument Explained is via a interpretive walk by The Friends Of Tule Springs (Ice Age National Park) volunteer group. There are idiots that shoot guns into there ( Call The Police when you see or hear them ) - Dont get involved - Also on the edges there is Dumping ( There are numerous groups that annually do clean up)- again Document Never get involved - and Contact the Lake Meade Park Service and they will get their several hundred dollar Ticket in the Mail. Again the Riding of Vehicles or any other damage is punishable by Fines and Vehicle Confiscation. Once we have a more enlightened Administration and Federal representation that moves this Park up as a Priority, International Visitors will follow. I will give it more Stars Once a Visitation trail with Restrooms are available, however being taken into this Park was Incredible and I look forwards to Multiple Trails, Camping, Interpretive Centers, etc. spread out over almost 50 miles. Most Locals dont understand the Golden opportunity to build non-Casino centric travel destination travel opportunity for our millions of tourists (even if only 2% visit, it will extend their Las Vegas visit by a couple of days and most will be international visitors going to ZION, Arches, Death Valley, The Grand Canton, Sequoia, etc. National parks
Its hard to give any National Monument one star but given that this specific monument is only a loosely dedicated site and name at this point in time, one star it is. It actually is much more in that the Big Dig did happen and countless fossils were unearthed at this site. Many more are probably still in the ground. Someday, hopefully sooner than later, a fence will be built to define the monument. A visitor center will follow, giving visitors an idea of the types of fossils discovered at the Big Dig. If were lucky, some of the original fossils will return to their point of discovery. And maybe, continuing fossil digs will return on site under the direction of the NPS. One can hope. I can hardly wait to see what fossils are buried here.
Great open space 25 minutes from the Strip. No resources though, as this National Monument was only recently opened. Over time more development will help preserve and interpret this site.
Beautiful night under the stars with my one and only love
On my hit list for next year!
Great place for some easy hiking.
Very majestic place
Beautiful Desert Terrain with the backdrop of the Sheep Mountain Range. Overhead you will get to enjoy Americas Military Might as jets from Nellis Aur Force fly over on a daily basis.
Rreall nice place ...for family to go BBQ .the best place
Thought I would be treated to some dinosaur fossils. Not at all what I expected. Until they clean it up and do more with it, dont waste your time.
Simple desert hike with rolling hills. Dusty terrain will make cleaning shoes a must afterwards.
There is nothing, I mean nothing here but a sign! Our newest National Park? OBummer for sure!.
The NM is now 2 years old and not even a little visitors center or anything. Just a sign and a fence. One small break in the fence which may be an entrance but no sign or anything so not sure you can even actually go in. If so there is no map, no directions or any signs. Just go in and good luck. Worst national park/monument stop I have visited. 5 stars for saving land and history but minus 3 for otherwise being pointless. Its free so at least it has that going for it.
Some people seem to think this is a place to dump refuse its not its a beautiful area please protect our deserts.
Too many dogs off-leash, people off-roading, trash, everywhere. Might as well just be a dump. I feel for the wildlife in the area.
Unfortunately its kind of difficult to find. Its a new addition to NPS and doesnt have a visitor center or any sort of guide. I would like to go back in the future when I know what Im looking at.
Minus all the dogs off-leash, people shooting, want to be fossil hunters, trash, drug deals, its a really great place. Just too bad people dont respect what is here
Not worth the gas to drive there, especially the time. Its full of broken glass and dog waste. Theres no paths, no information explaining it or what to look for. Its complete wasteland.
Not actually a monument... A nice place to walk around and view the desert... And trash.
Beautifull park and lake have very big rabbit there
