This is an amazing place to hike! There are several trails to choose from and its hardly ever crowded like Red Rock can be. Theres a stream that runs through most of the park, so the dogs can enjoy running through some fresh water also. My suggestion is to go early, before 9am, and youll likely have the place almost to yourself.
Hidden gem - great for an easy walk with your small kids and dogs.
Really cool. The rangers are really informative and nice. There is a nice hike throughout the refuge.
Nice Visitors Center, Helpful Volunteers and Easy Walkable Trails. Free entry, Nice Gift Shop. Be aware that High Clearance Vehicles are Highly Recommended, 4x4 very helpful but not absolutely required. Make sure to have a Full Tank of Gas, Lots of Bottled Water and Let people know where you are going if using Dirt Roads; its very remote, no Cell or Radio signals in Canyons or Valleys in DNWR. We traveled 40+ miles on Mormon Well Road from US 95 to US 93. Scenic and beautiful, but almost got stuck in Mud and Snow. Traction controls bailed us out. Check it out, we liked it, well be back.
Serene, peaceful and majestic; this is a great place to get away from everything and everyone, and its only 20 min outside Vegas.
Great spot for a daytrip! Very cool nature trails, easily accessible
What an AMAZING place... bring water and tire repair kit or you could be in serious trouble! Secluded and beautiful with a fun ride in!
Great day for a walk along the little trails. Rangers were extremely helpful and friendly.
Its so beautiful & peaceful here. We were here for a few hours & can not wait to go back and adventure further. Definitely a fun place to get out in nature & unwind. The information center was closed on the day we went but Im looking forward to returning to check it out & learn more.
Wonderful visitor center, very informative, great staff, lots of nice walking trails around the natural springs.
This is a great place to visit, with an informative visitor center, surprising streams. There is also a wooden walkway which makes the mile and a half walk easy!
I love this place. We have taken our Jeep on every trail. None of the trails are very technical, but the views are spectacular. We love that the type of scenery also is varied. If you are looking for fun trails with views, this is the place to go.
We did the hidden cabin trail on a Thursday. Very quiet hike. There were no other over night hikers. Beautiful rustic cabin has been well maintained by the park staff and volunteers. The spring doesnt always run so be sure to pack plenty of water.
Nice mountain view. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Well maintained property.
Excellent. But they need to have some picnic tables. There are only two round cement tables on the patio. Only 2 can sit on the bench and reach the table. Otherwise it makes a nice little day trip.
I was told by the staff that there are only two entrances to this massive park and I just stumbled upon one of entrances as I was riding by. It is an enormous refuge from desert to mountains and one needs to spend some time to take in all its beauty which l didnt have so I will return some time in the near future with more time to explore and plenty of water.
Beautiful desert scenery with easy walking trails
The visitor center is small but educational with a small gift shop. The walks right outside the center are easy and enjoyable. The drive through the desert behind the mountains, however is rough. Took us over 5 hours to travel the 45 mile route in a Hyundai Santa Fe. The road is barely that and although the scenery is excellent, unless you have a lifted truck with off-road tires, dont bother.
There are a lot of marked trails. A beautiful place to get away from the craziness of a big city.
Beautiful place! The trails are nice and its a fun stop for both adults and kids. Will be back!
Tremendous gem up north of town didnt even know it existed until I went with a group of retired teachers took my nine-year-old daughter with me we had a blast easy walking trail amazing Visitor Center lots to see and learn about cant wait to take my thirteen-year-old back I think she would enjoy it as well
This is one of Vegass hidden gems!! Great place to visit and learn about the plants and animals of the Mohave desert.
The visitor center is new and really nice; there are a lot of exhibits that are interesting both for adults and kids. There is also a covered picnic area, and several short nature trails.
Quiet and well-kept walking trails.
Traveled entire length of Alamo Road in the refuge from north to south. 72 miles. To the salt lake is less rocky and the south side of the lake has such soft soil in the road that previous vehicle have had to start maki g new tracks on the side. Take these they are much better. Going sought of the lake the next 45 mikes are very rocky. The petroglyph site south of the lake is now off limits. Kind of stupid because the offlimits sign just draws attention to the petroglyphs. Not a good way to protect them.
Nice little place. Some trails are surprisingly shaded and its not too far from Vegas. Its a nice getaway from all the traffic and noise. Im not a huge fan of what they have done to the pond (it looks so fake with the cement), but its still a neat place to swing by!
Beautiful scenery and wildlife. Must have lisenced high clearance vehicle to drive trails.
A sanctuary for wildlife. Beautiful scenery. Educational material
Great little hidden gem in the Nevada desert
What an experience! Beautiful
Family Friendly EnvironmentRangers and Volunteers are always present Walking trails and Vehicle Off-road trails
Lived here 22 years and never new this place existed and its practically down the street from me! I will definitely go back and bring my grand daughter. So peaceful
Limited hours and run by volunteers, this beautiful visitors center is a great place to learn about the history of this magical oasis in the desert.
This a favorite escape of mine to explore the natural sights, sounds and critters of the desert. I enjoy visiting the refuge in all seasons. There are walking paths, picnic tables, a new visitor center.
Great visitor center and gift shop. Friendly folks and walking paths everywhere. Clean restrooms, water fountains and handicapped accessible. A lot of history with signs, benches and a small, shaded picnic area. Free.
Nice trails. Unfortunately the visitor center was closed (every Tue and Wed) and several of the trails were closed for maintenance. That said, all the trails we did walk were well kept with nice views and informative signage.
Great little stop! Scenic, pretty walks. Nice little visitor center and trail by it.
This is the biggest wild life refuge outside of Alaska and it right outside of vegas there are great jeep roads and wild life to be seen at over a million acres there are plenty of places to find some solitude and experience nature for camping and picnicking or just a slow ride down a dirt road its a fun day and again so close you can be there in less than an hour from downtown the visitor center has a small museum and very informed park rangers to guide you to whatever your looking for
Several paved paths with informative displays available at the visitor center. To explore back into the area suv type higer ground clearance vehicle would be beneficial. You should take that gallon of water per person, better to have and not need it.
The Visitors Center has a very informative video in addition to a desert exhibit that will let you learn all about the Mojave Desert. There are also plenty of walking trails and many mile of desert roads to explore if you have the right vehicle. It is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
Wonderful informative protected area, great for short hikes and desert wildlife viewing. Great little visitor center with extremely nice and sharing staff. Worth the short drive!
Good trails, clean information center, clean bathrooms, free camping, great hiking. All around good place.
There is great design and architecture to highlight the wildlife and cultural importance of this area.
A lush, diverse oasis nestled near Vegas. Trails are generally very wheelchair accessible near the visitors center and theres ample signage on the walking trails.
Small but well done visitors center. The displays were engaging to my kids and really informative. We also walked on the trails to see the pond amd aquarium where they are preserving an endangered desert fish and snail that were almost wiped out by invasive species brought in to the area. Beautiful oasis of mesquite trees and a running spring in the middle of a dry desert landscape. The center has informative displays about Why you find oases like this (geologically speaking) and information about native people that lived in the area.
A little known place to find a bit of peace.
Lived here since 95 and never made the drive out. One of my new favorite spots. Beautiful scenery, very peaceful.
If relaxation in quiet places is what you need this is the place, clean restrooms, wonderful rangers, water fountains, nice trails and off-road friendly roads for exploration, fairly dark skies I use to image galaxies and nebulas, close to noisy Vegas.
This place is gigantic, and all of it is gorgeous. If youre new to the Mojave Desert this is a great place to become more familiar with it. Start at the visitor station and learn how and why this place is so special. The people who work and volunteer will go way above their job description to help you have fun and learn about the environment of the area. There are lots of places to hike, from easy wheelchair accessible paths to extreme wilderness adventures. Remember, its in a desert. It isnt always hot but it is almost always dry. Drink water, a lot of it.
So peaceful.... a desert wonderland.
This is a must go to place great activity as well as kids and adult can earn badges while learning and exploring the outdoors.
If you like the outdoors you like it it took me from 95 too 93 6 hours i stop and look around alot
Extremely beautiful place. Took engagement photos here.
On 14th of April 2019,I was feed up with being in the city so I drove my kids up 95 north and saw a sign to this location. Decided to just take the path to what seemed nowhere and found this refuge. Long and behold that I was taken away how this hidden gem literally made me appreciate my surroundings of nature. The staff is absolutley friendly. Its an easy path for kids to walk and enjoy life. Charge you phone to take pictures and bring water, comfy shoes and a hat to shade the sun. There are rest stop along the paths. I meet many non locals and it was well worth the drive. Its free to walk in and leave relaxed and appreciative of Nevada. Please have a heart and donate because that money does help keep this gem beautiful. I want to thank the staff for their friendliness...I will be back again...thats a promise.
Fairly level path, mostly paved, some pea gravel, wagon accessible, possibly wheelchair accessibility. New, informative visitor center with clean bathrooms. Did the perimeter trail that took less than an hour with a group of cub scouts. Nice gem only a half hour outside of north las vegas. Loved the water spring and cabin house. Will revisit during dusk to see local animals. Great trip, would do again.
They are amazing - need a 4 wheeler though.
Love hiking here.
Only visited the visitor center.this is a very nice place great history there staff very friendly and informative good place for a walk weather permitted.
Very nice staff. Beautiful, quiet place. Lots and lots of trails some short and some long. Dog friendly on a leash too!
A fantastic new visitor center with numerous educational exhibits for people of all ages.
Fresh, new facilities to enjoy. Small inside exhibit area with a few educational exhibits on the geography, Native people, wildlife, and an awesome map. There is a small gift shop and clean restroom. The staff was friendly and helpful. Plan to enjoy the outdoor hiking paths around the springs. I didnt see any wildlife, but it was a cold windy day. Be mindful of the weather and bring extra water. Today is cold and rainy so I want to get out of the wash before any flooding but in the summer this place would be crazy hot.
Great little hikes and a nice visitor center! Will come back for the great offroad trails!!
Very cool place to see what it was like to live and survive in the wild west desert.
Its stunning out there. I dont see the reason not to stop by.
Its changed immensely since the modern additions. Its nothing like it was, but better in many ways. The experience of nature firsthand had been replaced with hands on stations in an environmentally controlled atmosphere. Where it was once a place for parents to teach their kids what they knew, how even parents will learn things they didnt know too.
The visitor center is well maintained and the trails are stroller friendly. Very short trails though.
Its new center was nice. The road is paved. The last time I went was 10yrs ago. And it was all dirt roads. Has plenty of trails n walks and birds to see and tons of lizards. Even finally seen a horney toad lizard. Hadnt seen 1 in yrs..
Really beautiful location. Absolutely love this place. Always so much fun and really great for pictures or desert settings.
BEAUTIFUL visitor centerFriendly staffNice walking trails AND, free!
Visitors Center: this section of the refuge is beautifully developed, but we did not see many birds during the hours of four to six p.m.The area is a classic example of the basin and range province, that is, long, narrow mountains bordering long, flat desert valleys. The birds we caught glimpses of were a pair of Pyrrhuloxia (a large gray cardinal), a pair of White-crowned Sparrows, and a Virginia Rail. One American Coot and a pair of crows made themselves very obvious in the pond area.
Although the majority of the vast territory of Desert National Wildlife Refuge is desert mountains, home to protected but elusive desert bighorn sheep, there are oases. One of them is the easily accessible Corn Creek Visitors Center, four miles by paved road from US 95 just a few mile north of Las Vegas. It has pleasant walking paths and picnic tables and is a popular destination for bird watching. For those with high clearance or four wheel drive vehicles, there are miles of scenic unpaved roads throughout the rest of the refuge, including camping sites.
Great refuge, wonderful visitor center. Nice trails around the center. Didnt have time to explore more.
Wonderful experience. Well worth the trip.
It was a lovely walk with lots of cool shady spots and lovely streams even in the hight of summer.
Beautuful place to visit and an east hike for little legs
Very impressive visitors center. Maybe we spent too much on the visitor center for this somewhat obscure refuge, but its very nice and very informative. However, dont just see the visitor center. Drive out onto the refuge and observe for yourself the fascinating things the desert offers.
Very informative, great scenery, excellent staff, beautiful building.
Great visitor center. Nicely maintained trails. Quite birdy.
Great walk
Great place to bring the family! The visitors center has plenty of information and teaches it in a fun way. The facilities are clean and well maintained. Trails are marked and there are other point of interest boards for some light reading. Good views for bird watching and photography, and nice shaded sections for sitting and picnics!
Water! Free! Visitors center offers museum style description of indigenous peoples experience traveling living in and around the Las Vegas valley providing an intuitive connection to the visitor of the extremes of desert life. Wall the lazy meandering trails and most often year-round experience babbling creeks natural to this unique desert region. Settled by orchard farmers sample unique fruits and berrys with chirping birds signing the way all along.
The Rangers and volunteers are a wealth of knowledge and information. The small Museum is a nice surprise. Stroll along the creek and take in the mountain views. A wonderful oasis just outside of Vegas.
A green oasisSurrounded with dry brown de desertLife giving SpringsBeautifulWOW
Miles of solitude. The roads are very well maintained. Sadly we did not see any wildlife on our 4 hour drive from I95 to I15.
I visited near midnight. Its just far enough away from Vegas that the light pollution is little enough that you can actually see the stars and parts of the milky way. Not something we see much, anymore - people have forgotten to look *up*!
Great place. We didnt stay long because it was a bit chilly but will definitely visit again when the weather is warmer.
Look for it and find great signs.
The staff and volunteers are great and very helpful.
I absolutely love the fact that there is no charge to walk around this beautiful place. If you havent been here, you must go.
Very friendly staff, dated display, but placards were first rate. Outdoor placards were also a nice surprise.
Great campground. Roads are VERY rough. Takes hours to get to the campground. Not going back.
This is a great place to quietly walk the trails and look for birds and other wildlife. If you want to explore the backcountry (anything past the visitor center), youll need to be prepared with a high-clearance vehicle, spare tire or two and plenty of water. No off-road vehicles are allowed.
Wonderful visitor center that keeps getting better. The trails with all the wildflowers, birds, lizards and rabbits are wonderful.
Great place to take a stroll. Just wait until its cooler temps. The museum is cool too.
Located along US 95, north of Las Vegas, the visitor center here is fantastic. Not run by the NPS, USFS or the BLM, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has created an impressive educational opportunity for anyone interested in the sights, sounds, flora and fauna of the Mojave Desert or the history of the area.At 1.6 million acres, the Desert National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect an immense range of the Bighorn Sheep. The area is the largest wildlife refuge in the United States outside Alaska. Besides the estimated 800 Bighorn that live here, many other species like the Desert Tortoise are also protected.Because the area is administered by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, its interests are solely for the protection of native wildlife. Besides the visitor center, there is little here except 4-wheel drive dirt roads that allow some access into the areas vast wilderness. There are no scenic vista points, typical picnic areas or maintained campgrounds. It’s all about protecting the desert animals. What is here is a fantastic visitor center. Four miles after the turnoff from US 95, the parking lot is shaded under solar panels. The building houses an information counter, a great exhibit area, a very nice bookstore/gift shop and restrooms. If interested in what lives in the Mojave Desert, information about the area, or getting maps to other Nevada wilderness areas, a stop here is definitely worth your time.
