The beginning is very challenging if you arent that experienced with hikes and if you arent prepared. Coming back down was a challenge and we got dirty but you should get used to it towards the end. You can find sticks on the way that will be helpful through the hike. If you come here, make sure to be prepared for mud. The whole hike is about 40-50 minutes. The view at the top is amazing and breathtaking. Our shoes were covered in mud afterwards, be prepared to get dirty.
The start is very difficult to find. It was very muddy, which can be ok and expected in this season, but the steep climbs and descents were challenging. It was an adventure, which I love, but the longest 3 miles I have hiked in a long time. Some descent views, climbing over and under fallen trees, and a sense of accomplishment made it worth while. Just follow the ribbons and you wont get lost. And whoever put those ribbons there, THANK YOU!
Truly one of the best views on island. Park at the theatre or other retail shops. The hike it’s self is a clear path and pretty easy over all if it’s been dry. If it’s muddy that’s another story. There are some low hanging branch portions, and a few rope portions but nothing too intense. I consider myself a pretty novice hiker and I took this trail with ease. It took me just under two hours and that was with a few picture breaks. Bring water, bug spray, sun screen, a hat was nice too but not necessary as much of the path is shaded.
We did this bright and early on a Saturday. It was such a great hike. Anyone can do it. It does get a little steep for a minute (theres rope for people to use), and there is a section that is mostly climbing over roots, but it is doable. I recomend going when its on the dry side, or youll be sliding around. Our 5-year old didnt have any issues, we just had to go slow at certain points because of his little legs. Its mostly shaded, so the sun isnt beating down on you. The views from the top are amazing. This may be my favorite hike, or close to it.
A good short hike, some areas are inclined but overall was good all the way to the bunker at the end.
Absolutely fantastic view, prepare to get muddy. Finding the trail is takes a bit but is definitely worth it, follow the guard rails exiting left out of the plaza with McDonalds and you wont miss it. Theres usually an orange or yellow marker to signify the start.
Great hike but if muddy it can be difficult
What a great trail with amazing views! Will definitely hike this again.
Quite short but beautiful and interesting. And the view at the end is AMM-AAZ-INNNG.
Parking available in Temple Valley shopping center, from Mcdonalds walk east along the rail on Kam highway @ 150 yards and start of trail should be marked by ribbons on your left. Easy to moderate hike for all ages, great Kodak moment when you reach the end, you will know when you reached the end. Spectacular aerial view of Kaneohe Bay and beyond. Highly recommended!
The trail itself is a bit hard to find and was very muddy when we did it. Try to avoid going after it rains, as some parts are steep and its easy to slip in the mud. Also, it can also get very hot/humid in the afternoon, so try to go in the morning. The view at the top was worth it though. There are two old World War 2 bunkers you can climb into once you get there.
A classic example of risk/reward, this hike pays off in the end with a spectacular vista. It really is akin to a helicopter view, as stated in one of the guidebooks. Alas, we chose to ascend on a rainy day, and it was very challenging to remain a biped humanoid on the steep portion. The lack of trail maintenance, such as crowning, draining, or rock may seem to romanticize a “path less travelled”, but these measures would definitely make for a safer hike and much less erosion and environmental degradation. But all in all it was a great ramble up the ridge. Just pick a dry day.
Super Muddy and Very Slippery!! Although we knew this going in!!! It was definitely fun and a Challenge with kiddos on our backs!! Went down a couple times but nothing too bad (no one got hurt)!! Definitely will Go again and Take my Bigger Kids...muddy or dry!!
It was nice easy hike for all ages with amazing views, only very slippery when its rainy day, if you up for fun adventure then dont let it stop you, but on the safe side wait for sunny day
Easy hike, 1 mile hike to reach the pill box. Great area to view the morning sunrise or sunset. Some minor rope climbing required.
Great hike with a view at the end! Not recommended during or shortly after a rain.
Awesome hike with great variation of terrain! Beautiful lookout!
Really good hike for my family. Totally doable but where shows that have good traction and keep your eyes open. You may fall or smack your head on a low hanging branch.
Beautiful view at the top and its completely under trees almost the entire way so its great to give your skin a break from the sun. You can run almost the entire thing but not quite all of it because there are some low trees you have to bend under.
Amazing view! And is really quiet
Beginner trail and most of the trail is in the shade. Parking is tricky, youll have to park on the street in the neighborhood. Dont park in the shopping center, they will tow you!
Not too hard trail, Worth it!
Steep and muddy in some parts but, the view at the top is well worth it.
Excellent hike for a gorgeous view of Kaneohe Bay and the Windward Coast. There are two paths to the summit. One begins along the main road and the other starts in a residential neighborhood. Like almost every trail on Oahu, portions of the trail can be muddy and slippery.
Great hiking trail
Really nice hike. Very dog friendly. Parking is pretty close at the Koolau Center.
Its in Kaneohe....need i say more?
Its just plain and simply gorgeous..andcthe hike is refreshing!!!
Little muddy but easy hike and wonderful view at the end. Lots of history there.
Great neighborhood hiking trail. Being an older guy whos not in great shape, it was yet a relatively easy hike. As soon as you get on the trail, youre climbing. It was somewhat challenging initially as it rained earlier that morning and so the trail was slippery and muddy. Took over halfway up before we could see glimpses of Kaneohe bay through the tree openings. When you get to the end and turnaround point, there are old concrete bunkers that the military put in for observation posts during WWII. Beautiful panoramic views from Kuuloa point and Chinamans Hat all the way to Kaneohe Bay. Breathtaking!
Nice moderate hike. The view of the bay at the end of the trail is beautiful. Try to go on a relatively dry week; there is a pretty steep hill to go up.
Awesome local foot path. Spectacular views. Not touristy at all. Great soul searching spot
Really cool view at the end! I loved the circular coral reefs off in the distance. Watch out for mosquitoes, especially around the pill boxes!
Its an amazing view of the bay.
Good ! Very good!
Love this trail.
Great trail. Best when dry.
Moderate trail with amazing view. Can become a bit tricky when wet due to steep incline and mud.
It is a great view, if you are not in shape it will be really difficult.
Fun, challenging, breathtaking views.
Medium trail but very nice views
Be careful, amazing views!
Beginning is pretty steep and almost impossible to pass after heavy rains. Beautiful views.
One of the most amazing views on the island!!!!
Awesome, lightly used and of course muddy trail depending on recent rains. The summit opens to a large pillbox with an outstanding view of Kaneohe Bay. Long may it be untrampled by the hordes and suffer the fate of the Lanikai Pillbox trail.
Easy hike really but what ups the difficulty are the hills, ducking the branches and the amount of areas with roots. Only about 1mile and 35 minutes each way
Nicest view ever!!!
Very Beautiful.
Hard time finding the entrance
Nice place
Easy hike, gorgeous view!!!
Awesome trail
Ok..
Great Trail!!
