Outstanding community resource! Great education programming and venue.
This jewel is situated right outide of downtown Indianapolis. While in town recently, I was fortunate enough to be the last person provided with a tour of this historic masterpiece in its current form! A special thanks to Mary Kelly Director of Operations for the impromptu tour! The entire theater building is about to undergo a major renovation in parthership with Indiana University. I look forward to seeing the new reveal!
It was nice, clean and accessible for my power chair.
They are finally renovating this historic place! I think it will look awesome when they are done
Been to a couple events here always a good time. The history behind this building is great. I am looking forward to seeing it after the current renovations are done.
Great history and vibe. Cant wait to see what they do with the renovated place!
MWLC is almost ready for phase 1, soft opening. It is going to be AMAZING!!
Best thing is free parking on Indiana Avenue. The monumental architecture stands out and reminds of the world war days when Indianapolis was the capitol.
Cool place to Visit. Looking fed to more Events
We are working on Performance Technology improvements. And it will be great once they are completed.

Not open and under construction when arrived back in late March. Would love to see this turned into something historic to the owner of Madam Walker one day
Love that they are finally fixing the place to put it back to the glory it deserves!
We had a wonderful time at our Talk With An Astronaut field trip. David Wolf answered questions and gave a very nice presentation. We all learned so much and we appreciate the sacrifices he and the other astronauts made to further our knowledge of space and science. The building itself was extraordinary. It was like taking a step back in history. Im so glad they are going to preserve this theater. They dont make places like this anymore. The staff was warm and welcoming.
Food was delicious. Allison Victoria was very enjoyable. I love the historical ballroom. Jazz on the Avenue.... wonderful!
Very helpful and genuine staff and a place with lots of history and character! Been to a dance show there and a wedding reception in their ballroom. Enjoyed both!
Visit this place! Historic....and there arent many places like this left! Its being updated, but w.im maintain its authenticity. Madame CJ Walker theatre really draws you in; I could actually envision attending events back in the day. Love this place SO MUCH
Just an amazing theater overall. The ambiance of this place is just beautiful. They had great shows here and you should at least see one of your coming into town.
Wonderful place to take a tour and teach the kids some black history.
It is a historical landmark Madame CJ Walker
Remodel looks great
Theatre will close for renovations in June 2018, and reopen in 2020. This is a lovely place, worth preserving.Madame Walker was the first black Millionaire, and a philanthropist who built this place as a resource for this community.
Very surprised a nice little theater exists where it does. Fun venue to rent out for a smaller play. Our school did a series of skits as a fundraiser and rented it out.
Love this place, so much history
Had a awesome time, just wish the elevator was bigger and they have more than one
Love the ambience and atmosphere of the building cant wait to see and feel the new renovation and improvement of the building when it reopens. Loved the Asante Childrens Theatre production!

Wonderful place. Have your event here!!
Defining the terms of my review, Ive just returned from a tour of the Madame Walker Theater and my sole regret is having not visited the landmark sooner. There was no stage production or even rehearsal taking place during the tour. In fact, including my guest and me, I doubt there were ten people in the structure during the two hours of the visit. What made the experience so memorable was a 91 year old docent, a D-Day veteran who spent his youth living, playing working and learning along Indiana Avenue on which the theater was built when he was only aged five.Thomas Ridley, with the recall and energy of a man half his age, described the history of the buildings namesake, Madame C.J. Walker, the nations first self-made female millionaire who, as the child of two former slaves, built a thriving enterprise manufacturing and marketing hair care and beauty products largely for fellow African-American women. The theater, however, was built five years after the company matriarch died, by her also dynamic daughter and the Indianapolis attorney who managed the company both before and after Madame Walkers death.Built two years before the start of the Great Depression, the theaters four stories rose at the center of Indianapolis thriving Black community. Mr. Ridley described how the theater showed both silent films as well as the new phenomenon of talkies. As the Crossroads of America, Indianapolis was a regular stop for the top jazz bands of the day and Ridley believably saw them all.The architecture borrows from the flatiron style on the exterior, while the theater itself displays reminders of East Africa and Egypt, a preference of M. Walkers fashion conscious daughter, ALelia. The physical community described by Mr. Ridley is gone, an unintended consequence of desegregation in the 1950s and 60s and the unthoughtful effect of urban renewal of the 1970s.If you visit the theater, do so with an appreciation of the story represented by the building and not with the gauche idea of comparing it with some contemporary venue built with little consideration for community. If youre very lucky, Thomas Ridley will be your guide.
