So sad to see some of the animals’ bare minimum habitats :( there were like 20 huge parrots in a tiny cage with barely enough space for them all to stand - please give them more room! I also felt the orangutans’ pen was awful - no trees or nature and just a few clumps of hay on concrete and some metal poles. Honestly, I didn’t see one exhibit where I felt like they had a great set up and were happy. I really hope the zoo stops trying to bring in new animals and instead puts that money toward improving the habitats of the many wonderful animals they already have!! Until then, going to this zoo just supports profit over animal welfare and is very sad to see.

So if you get your tickets for after 5pm for the Christmas extras, you won’t see any animals pretty much. Go sooner and you can do both (for the same price). We went at 330 and left at 530. Didn’t see all the animals in that time frame, so I’d go earlier. During the zoo part the covid safety guidelines were great. Each indoor activity has a line and limited capacity inside, enforced. The stingray pool is spaced out six feet from other groups with a fence and enforced. The bench’s first the train were cleaned after each group. Masks were enforced as well. No gatherings in front of the viewing areas, every one seemed to take turns. It was a nice experience. The animals were pretty active the ones we did see.The Christmas part is extremely crowded and not something we were comfortable venturing into much with a baby. Maybe if it wasn’t for the baby our viewpoint would be different. But last night it was way to many people in one area not distanced.

We love going to the Indianapolis Zoo!(indianapoliszoo.com) Even though its practically in the middle of the city, there are so many trees & plants youd never know it. You have to look pretty hard to see a skyscraper. The Zoo isnt huge, so its easy to visit & see everything you want to see without wearing yourself out.Currently, the Zoo staff are taking extra care to provide for social distancing so things arent as they usually are. The Oceans (indoor) exhibits, the Dolphin Pavilion, and the Deserts exhibits are limited as to how many people may be inside at one time. Because of this there is a wait to get in, which was new for us this trip.New exhibits for us this trip were the MISTery Park/Sloth exhibit and Tembo Camp where we got to see an elephant up close and even touch one! (I always forget they have hair on their bodies!)Some shops & dining areas werent open, but there are plenty still available. Dont let that stop you from going!I also appreciate the Zoos dedication to recycling & green energy as well as preservation of wildlife as well as waterways. There is a lot of education available available throughout the park in the way of signage & pictures to engage young and old alike.Next time we go, I hope to get back to the White River Gardens (included with your Zoo admission) & Butterfly Kaleidoscope.

My favorite zoo...so far. Just the right size. Dolphin exhibit was beautiful...however I will say it wasnt as special like I thought it would be. They were just swimming, a lot of times out if sight. The prettiest thing was the aquarium they were in. The butterfly exhibit also a little disappointing.....not to many butterflies. I am comparing this exhibit to the Memphis butterfly exhibit. But like the dolphin exhibit.....the exhibit was the best part. But as far as the rest, just beautiful. I love the rides you can take and its all around a beautiful zoo.

Great place to take the kids! My advice, pay the $12 extra to get the adventure pass like we did, you wont regret it. You get to feed the animals at certain exhibits (birds, giraffe, etc.) and ride the rides. All the exhibits were amazing, the only problem we ran into is if you want to see the dolphin show, you have to present your ticket you get at the main entrance. We were lead to believe we needed a separate ticket and because of this, were unable to see the show. Aside from that, the butterfly exhibit is outside the main gate, it is not located within the park if you are looking for it based on the signs and map.

We visited on a rainy Thursday, but we still had a great time with very light crowds! The dolphin show was excellent! It was amazing that it was included with our admission and it was at no extra charge! Most of the animals here have large habitats, some not so much. They have many unique animals here, such as the dolphins as mentioned and walruses! The aquarium section was amazing as well.

To be 100% honest I was quite disappointed with the Christmas at the zoo. For the price I think I should have been able to expect more. it is night time so majority of their animals are sleep understandably. So in my mind Im going more for a light show and atmosphere than anything. There was one small area that the lights flash to the beat of music. Other than that its very lackluster. The train ride was a joke. Just took us around in the dark. I thought there would be some type of light display or something special about the train ride. Maybe 2-year-olds would find it amazing but majority of kids I saw walking around that were maybe 8 plus looked very disappointed. What I do it again? No.

Its a pretty good zoo...i always have mixed feeling when it comes to animals in an enclosure as not all of them look so great. A lot of attention has been paid to the orangutan group amd from my understanding quite a few of them are rescues so I suppose their life is better now than it used to be.On another more positive note, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the crowds were not huge as I think they are operating under limited capacity. Even so alot of the food stands are currently closed. The place seemed clean and made for a wonderful family day out and if the weather is nice its worth the time to go.

Our family had a pretty great time. Due to the pandemic they are appropriately allowing only certain amount of participants in at a time. You need to choose a time phrame to enter. If youre early you have to wait in your car or head over to the butterfly planetarium which is adorable. The lines to get into the panguins, dolphins, sloths, and giraffes were unfortunately so long we didnt even wait for them. Thats my only negative experience. All in all it was a great experience. Masks are required to enter. We saw plenty of people outside without them but employees were telling people to put theirs back on.

The zoo is just not built for the pandemic. While its outside and open, it has very tightly knit spots to see the animals well and guests can be very rude and imposing. Newfields has been great in requiring outdoor masks regardless of whether you have the ability to social distance. I love visiting the zoo with my family. There are so many opportunities to get up close and personal with several species of animals, though it does cost more than the ticket price to do so. We particularly enjoyed watching an elephant get a bath and hand-feeding a couple of giraffes. Unfortunately, many of the attractions and food vendors were closed due to COVID. But totally understandable. Lines were really long– might be difficult for young children to tolerate, especially in the heat. There are still some areas of the zoo that need a total renovation, but they’ve been working hard over the past few years to do updates. Overall, the zoo makes for a great day trip!

Having a membership is completely worth it if you have littles ones. The zoo is always so clean, the employees are always friendly, and the animals seem to be well taken care of! The dolphin exhibit is a must-see (grab a ticket to one of the shows when they’re running), the macaw shows are so entertaining, there’s a touch tank in the aquarium building (I think the ability to touch the sharks and manta rays is currently off-limits) and the lions, especially when they’re all out, are so amazing to watch (as are most of the animals!) Food prices are average to above average (remember this is an entertainment facility!) There’s a train ride that takes you behind the scenes of the zoo, there’s a lifted scenic ride (about 65ft in the air) and a carrousel ride all available for additional costs. During the pandemic and mask mandate, most customers seems to either wear their mask OR keep their distance (not wearing a mask) Be aware that it’s not “against the rules” to not wear a mask, as long as you are able to social distance. Now that the temps have fallen a bit, the masks are not as irritating! If it’s hard for you to wear a mask for long periods, find a picnic table off by itself and remove yourself mask while you catch your breath! You can easily spend 2-4 hours here! Worth it!

There’s a ton of “junk” like rides and shops filling the space that in my opinion could be used to expand and improve animal enclosures. I understand this is probably to generate more money but it’s sad to see the ground worn down in so many cages from the animals pacing in boredom. It’s subpar compared to other zoos I’ve been to like the one in Memphis so I probably won’t visit again.

First and foremost I want it to be known I’m an employee at the Indianapolis Zoo. The 3 stars is not for the zoo. It’s for the customers that come in. I have some guests that are kind but others that are just flat out rude. It’s about 50/50 for the kind/rude people ratio. And I just want anyone who reads this and then decides to come to the zoo, please be kind to us. Please don’t yell or say rude things to us because something did not go your way. Common complaints; Too hot no shade. No water around front. No more dolphin show tickets etc. My department has nothing to do with any of these issues. Yet we get the most hate from people because we’re closest to the entrance and exit. We are humans too. We do not owe you. We simply work there and we’re simply trying to do our job. Please, just be kind and ask yourself if the way you’re talking to an employee is the way you’d want to be spoken too.

The zoo itself is nice and spacious. Different little activities for kids and interactions for everyone. Definitely an improvement over the years. However, a few things that stood out about this visit. One, my two year old made a remark a few times about the animals seeming sad (mainly all the the primate varieties and birds). Two, I didnt notice many foraging or entertainment options for many animals. Thats kinda sad as an animal owner myself. And three, the macaw cage was SEVERELY lacking in opportunities. Macaws are very intelligent and even though they are in an aviary, there seemed to be many lacking opportunities. At the time of our visit I did not see any captive foraging for ANY BIDS HOUSED. Nor toys or puzzle opportunities. The larger macaws seemed stressed and agitated by the shear number of birds coupled with lack of entertainment and were picking at each other. Not like bonded grooming but picking at feet and wings. As a bird owner it is hard to explain the disappointment. Overall, wasnt too bad but would definitely recommend more activities for animals l.

I spent about four and half hours in there with my kids - 5, 3, and 2 y.o. Theyre fascinated! We pretty much covered all of it, including dolphins show.Loved every part of it - you could pet an elegant or bark on them seals!Food inside was good, drinks were very expensive, and as it was hot, so we spent a lot on them drinks. Well, if wed thought ahead, could bring them with us, so next time well be smarter.Right to the right from the main entrance theres a strollers rental, and we rented double-one for youngest kid and our bags - it was perfect and the price for rent was something like $11.Overall - 10/10, worth every dollar!

Drove 2 1/2 hours to visit the zoo. Extremely impressed with the care for keeping things sanitized and socially distant. Unbelievable orangutan exhibit that is quite impressive. Very disappointed in the dolphin show. The theme was quite preachy and more time was spent on showing videos than the dolphins. Recommend you dont waste your time with that. Overall, we all considered it worth the drive and probably will be going back.
