Horsetooth Mountain, Horsetooth Reservoir, and Horsetooth Rock are the iconic landmarks standing in prominent view in the Foothills just west of Fort Collins. It makes for a wonderful area to explore nature and see some fantastic beauty.Camping sites are available to rent. And the lake makes for a lot of fun in the heat of summer.By boat, kayak, SUP, etc. it is a great place to enjoy the water. And for a true mental & physical challenge the area provides for some rigorous routes on bike. The north end of it adjoins Lory State Park which is definitely worth checking out as well.
We went up the Horsetooth Rock trail and down the South Ridge trail. Note that the parking lot was filling quickly by 7:45 so make sure you get there early during busy seasons. Even though the lot was full the amount of trails made it seem like we were the only ones around. Well maintained trails made the trip up through the beautiful terrain easy to follow. Absolutely beautiful, we cant wait to come back!
Nice hike with lots of variety. Great views; beautiful way to get your heart rate up and check off your workout for the day.
$9 to park, there is a machine that takes debit/credit. The pass is good for 24 hours. The parking lot fills up very quickly. Dogs allowed on leashes. The waterfall at Horsetooth Falls trail was bigger than I expected, you can go up on the top and sit by the pools, or go down to the bottom of the falls, I enjoyed this trail its very short, easy, well shaded, and good variety of uphill and downhill. Horsetooth rock trail is much more difficult. Both trails are enjoyable and have wonderful views!
A very popular hiking area in northern Colorado. I highly recommend visiting since it is an iconic hike in the area. Make sure to get there early in the summer to beat the crowds and beat the heat. As of August 2020 google will route you to the wrong location for Horsetooth falls. Make sure to use the Horsetooth open space trailhead for directions to the main trailhead.
I really enjoy these hiking trails when in Fort Collins. Trails are moderate and scenery is excellent. There is a $9 fee for parking.Restrooms and water available at trail head.
There is a great variety of trails here- from multi-use bike-hike-ride to just footpaths. There is smooth dirt roads and challenging singletrack. A nicely equipped parking area with clear maps and well marked and maintained trails justify the $9 vehicle day pass. They do enforce parking passes and patrol the lots regularly.
A great place to go for a hike with varying levels of difficulty. The views of Fort Collins, Pikes Peak and Wyoming and brilliant. I cant wait to go back to explore the area more. They have a mix of mixed use and hiking only trails. Parking is $6 / day which is reasonable. Parking is available for horse trailers if youre planning on taking that option up the mixed use trails. Bring something to drink as there are no fountains on the mountain.
Larimer County does a great job keeping trails maintained! Riding bikes from town and then hiking to Horsetooth Rock was the single thing that convinced my wife and I to move here. Five years later and it is still my favorite hike in the area.
Loved hiking here with my daughter while on a cross country roadtrip looking at colleges.
Parking lot fills up early, but if you do get there plenty of nice trails. The eponymous hike is fairly straightforward, though the end requires some scrambling up (stable) boulders. Great views even if you dont go the whole way though
A great place to hike. Falls have a nice resting area. Other trails are easily combined for more of a work out area. Good place to spend day.
Great place super close to Fort Collins. There are only a few campsites, and theyre first come first serve, so make sure you get there early. Also a great place for a day hike, featuring horsetooth falls and horsetooth rock, which has a fantastic view of fort collins and the surrounding areas.
Really lovely hiking and sightseeing location. The views are beautiful and the wildlife is diverse. Northern Colorado bird watching is especially good in this park and full day trips are very easy as there is a lot of trail and many points of interest. This park provides access to historic Horsetooth rock, gives great views of Fort Collins as a whole, and also features a waterfall and stream access to play in the water. The wild flowers and plant diversity are really a lovely thing to see in the spring and summer. The paths are hard packed dirt and work well for walking, jogging or bicycling. There is a fee for parking a car in the lot, just $6 at the time of this review, but no limit on the number of passengers and gives you a full day pass that you can use to enter the park any time on the purchased date.Water fountains (turned off in winter) and an out house style toilet are available in the parking lot before you set out.
The space was large and had ample parking. The trails are good and give a great workout and we found multiple resting spots on all the trails. If your looking for a good workout with well maintained trails this place fits well.
This place is fun and beautiful at any time, but we decided to hike the Rock for the 4th. We saw every fireworks show in northern Colorado and it was amazing!! It was a great, wide trail for our first night hike! Cant wait to do it again!
The Horsetooth reservoir is beautiful but too many line ups for boat rentals or waiting to launch made it cluttered. Too many bicyclists. The Horsetooth Falls was a trickle and I paid $9 to get into the State Park to do a hike under 90°F temps, with no sheltering trees on the trail. It would be better to go there in the Fall or Spring!
Love this place......some spots not so good for toddlers unless you have a harness. Great hike with amazing views. The top of the tooth is where its at though. The water is fall is beautiful and relaxing.
This is a great place to go hiking with the family depending on which trail and how far u go it is easy to moderate. Perfect for kids 5 and up if they are used to being active. Make sure you go on a cool day as it does get scorching up there. We made the mistake of going when it was over 100 degrees last time we made it but it was rough from the heat. Also the falls are always nice to see not the best falls I have ever seen but for a 40 min trip to the falls not bad. Also go check out the rock on the other trail its beautiful up there.
An amazing hike with wonderful panoramas! Takes about 1.5 hours, and is tough but not strenuous. Take water.
Very good for workout. I love being there
Three of us visited in late August and had a great time hiking around. Beautiful country up there and tons of different trails to walk around on. Get far enough away from the trailhead and the only sounds you hear are the nature and your footsteps. Marvelous. We spent about 3 or so hours hiking and only scratched the surface of available trails and scenery. Crossroads between the trails are well marked, but I recommend bringing a map with you along with plenty of water to drink.
Easily accessible from Fort Collins and surrounding areas. Great place for hiking snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Its hard to get lost. Trails are marked well and snow-packed enough to follow them when snow-covered. Activities for all levels.
Make sure to check out horsetooth falls if its not dried up! Or just go anyway cause Its cool.
Well maintained trails. Gorgeous views. Had a very good time hiking there.
Well worth the hike. Have done it a handful of times over the last 5 years. Not a lot of shade so be prepared for that.
Lots of great trails. Be aware that the Parks Department difficulty rating is pretty tough for us flatlanders.
Multiple trails with varying levels of difficulty. The parking is paid however, so make sure you have a debit card with you. Well maintained, beautiful natural area. Please make sure you pack out your trash and dont forget to bring an extra jacket or hat; Colorado weather is unpredictable!
Great hiking! Suitable for most people. Beautiful views!
It brings you straight in to the mountain, no boring, flat, mile long walk like Coyote.
Nice trails that provided beautiful scenery, a good workout and lots of options. But be aware they charge a $9/day parking fee. Guess Im spoiled with fee-free Denver & Jeffco parks and forests plus wilderness areas throughout the state.
Awesome view from atop the boulder. Everyone helps keep the park and trails clean. Great hiking!
Nice hike to the falls, a bit hot, and this late in the year the falls are dry. Still a nice hike to get out and about close to home.
Such a great short hike, close to town. Just the right amount of elevation gain. Gets very icy at the approach to the rock, so bring traction! Its 9 bucks to park, good for 24 hours.
Horsetooth is a subtle Beauty. There are many miles of trails just in this foothill range, and one of the perks of this are is the fact that there are resturants, pubs, breweries, fastfood, grocery stores, hotels and any other amenity that you could ever ask for, all within driving distance for before or after your scenic hike!
Beautiful foothills scenery with breathtaking views from Horse Tooth Rock. Well maintained trails.
Great hike. Almost made it to the top. Not easy but a good workout. Wear boots, there are snakes.
Good healthy trails perfect for any age and activity level with beautiful sites. Pay attention to the time of year with daily temperatures being quite warm to hot in the summer mid to high 90s.
Great hike, beautiful views. Too bad the falls are all dried up right now!
Great trail. Good workout. Rocky and steep at the end.
Trails were fire/dope/lit/amazing/cool/aight
Beautiful area, amazing hike! Make sure you go all the way to the top of the mountain. I promise the view is worth it!
Perfect hike for a family. Our 3 yr old hiked to the waterfall and back, no problem.
Well kept park right outside of Fort Collins. On some days itll be quite busy but just take your time and enjoy the beauty of the reservoir and front range. Keep an eye out for deer and other wildlife!
The most beautiful views ever. The trails were easy to follow all the up to the tippy top! Just be ready for a great workout
We hiked the rock mothers day weekend. I have been up there many times. Its truly beautiful!
Great hike. Pretty water fall.
A lot of wide trails to hike. Can get technical up by the rock. Incline was challenging but not difficult. Go early in the day, when its cooler... limited shade.
Great hiking and biking close to town! Watch out for weekend crowds
I trail run here 1-4 times a week. Plenty of trails, gorgeous wild flowers early Spring, and great views of Horsetooth Reservior. Best to come early, parking lot fills up quick, especially on the weekends. Be rattle snke aware, they seem to like this area. Keep your dogs on a leash, or just do t take them July-september to keep them safe from a snake bite.
Whats not to love about this place. Any different seasons of activities. Hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, picnics, tons of wildlife and amazing photo opportunities
Beautifull, nice hike, friendly hikers will go back
A wonderful hike for beginners. Great vistas.
Great place and the view is amazing. Its awesome that they have allowed us all access of the service road up the mountain. What a work out. Be safe lots of big animal foot prints. And when those service worker are heading up the mountain. Lets give them some room, after all if those towers werent there that trail may have never been made...
Great Fort Collins back yard, the day pass is $9 the hikes are easy and not very long. You can visit the Horsetooth falls or the rock.
Lots of foot traffic. Well maintained. Have to pay to access.
Absolutely beautiful place well worth the money for an amazing hike!!!!
I love this hike. Its close and well maintained. I always go super early. So Im usually the only one out there. Im sure later in the day it gets pretty busy. Bathrooms are clean. Parking is 9 dollars. Theres a pay station that takes credit cards. Dogs are allowed.
One of the best places to have a hike in them
Awesome place, crazy ash falling from a sky in the region.
Great trails for all levels
Great early morning bike ride. Beautiful scenery. Technical trails in spots. Never look up, never give up! Great words of advice from a passing jogger who was in much better shape than me.
Trails are well maintained and everyone we met was very friendly!
Lots of trails to explore. Beautiful views.
Go hiking up the horsetooth rock and see the horsetooth reservoir & city. Anyone can make it if you have decent hiking shoes. The parking is $6 for the day. Not bad at all.
Amazing, the views are incredible, the trail has some challenges but overall not difficult, will do again
Mountain views, snow, well marked with COTREX app. Maybe top five hikes Ive ever done. Our 8 and 13 y.o. even enjoyed it!
Go in the morning during the summer, it gets very hot and bring a lot of water.
Magical location with a great overlook of Ft . Collins. 1.2 mile hike on a well marked trail. Parking is 9 dollars and card only at the trail. Kids loved it, I highly recommend the journey.
Amazing trails and views of the Rockies from the top of Horsetooth Rock!
Such a beautiful and scenic area
Paying to park... Worth it for the spectacular views also has vast amounts of hiking though
Absolutely breathtaking. This hike was a little bit of a challenge but it was so worth it in the end.
Very nice setup of assorted trails here. A $6 daily entrance fee (Larimer County Parks) is required and parking lot can be full at peak times. The rangers will allow two cars to wait in line at the entrance for another car to leave. Trail signage was minimal, and the parking lot sign can be passed by when doing a loop of the Falls and Horsetooth Rock trails.
What a beautiful location to hike and fish. You wont be disappointed.
Great walk up to the rock and surrounding trails. Take care to pay the parking fee, which is $6, and please dont try to climb this mountain at night as the summit is steep, with shear drops and no fence . It would be easy to fall. About 45 min to an 1.5 hrs to climb from main entrance parking lot. Please keep your trash in the cans or pockets, this area is very beautiful together we can keep it that way for the future. The trails are easily seen in daylight and are maintained at a near pristine condition. It would be wise to bring extra water, sunscreen, and maybe a hiking snack. Boots are a must as the trail will become very irregular towards the summit of horsetooth. Lots of places on all trails for scenic views and potential for close wildlife encounters. Please remember this mountain is the wildlifes home, and occasionally say out loud hello bear! .
$9 parking fee. It is worth it but seems a little steep relative to other nearby trailheads. Its a very extensive trail system with great views throughout. Icy and muddy during a good part of the winter. Shoe chains worked well.
Theres a reason the parking lot fills every nice weekend. The hike to the Falls is great for families with young kids; everyone else can explore farther and higher. Horsetooth Rock is something everyone in Fort Collins makes the pilgrimage to at some point.
Beautiful park. Costs $6 to get in. Saw a snake, 4 deer, and a lizard at about 11 am.
Fantastic hiking trails. Horsetooth rock is worth the climb!
I just love hiking here I spend anywhere from 3-6 hrs a day depending on my hike! Highly recommend not on weekends when weather is nice though very packed!
We went to the falls, pretty steep inclines in places but absolutely beautiful!
Great mostly easy trail. The falls were dried up so no payoff for our hike. It still was grand!
There are multiple trails with varying level of difficulty and distance. The views are breathtaking, not overcrowded, and it looks well preserved. I do wish the trails were better marked or that there are more trail markers, and that it would be noted on map or by park person what trail to take to overlook Ft. Collins, or to note what you can see on each trail.
Great biking, hiking, and horse trails. Beautiful views.
Well kept. Busy but not impossible to park on a week day.
Such a beautiful place. Everything looks like a postcard come to life. Humbling
Awesome camping...great grounds staff
Love hiking and running up hereBeautiful views!
Great hike. Clean trails, amazing view
Great hike to the top. Easy. Took 3 hours round trip.
I made it up Arthurs Rock!
Always a good green run day.
Beautiful place to go hiking. There is tuns of wildlife and suprinsingly not too many mosquitos down by the water fall.
Many varied MTB trails and well maintained facilities. Scenery was also excellent
Had a great trip here. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to spend the day hiking
I loved the summit trail, crazy views up their. Wish people didnt tag the signs, I hope I dont see any litter up their would make me very sad.
Busy, but great place!
