Its a beautiful building with awesome architecture. Im ecstatic that Ford motor company has purchased the building and is currently restoring and remodeling The Michigan Central train depot. I talked to a on site Security Guard (who BTW was very friendly and helpful, he had such a affable character) who told me that FOMOCO is planning on turning it into a shopping center and office rental facility.
One has to see this building. It seems it’s in the middle of nowhere to be a train station but it’s magnificent architecture in a scale that is grand even for the times.I hope it’s restored in a respectful way so that it will be as grand as it was.I always wonder why buildings like this outlive their usefulness and are abandoned. But this is Detroit full of buildings with similar fates.
I remember taking trains out of here up until it closed in 1988. Now that Ford has it, Im content in knowing it is being restored. A must-see on any architectural tour of Detroit.
Had the opportunity to help clean the station in 2009 with some of my fellow community station enthusiasts. Here are a few of the pictures from that day. Some art remained on the walls from a snazzy party that was held years earlier. I am honestly super excited that Ford will repair and open this beautiful jewel to the public. Thank you Ford!
Mexican picnic ! ️ Lovely fall day
This is where Ford motor company will develop next generation transportation products.
Good to explore around the historic building
Was able to get in for the open house weekend at the train station. Would have been awesome to get in some of the other levels but Im sure there were liability issues. Looking forward to the renovations and reopening.
Very nice Building nice location. Still under construction im sure when complete it will rate 5 stars. For now its worth seeing if you visit Detroit. Lots of nice shops and restaurants and some wine tasting in the city.
Lovely structure. I loved the architecture and the similarities it had to Central Station in New York.
Beautiful place to go and see in Detroit
The light show was not worth driving there and waiting for it to start very disappointing
Christman is the designated contractor presently restoring the Detroit Train Station.
Was very very cool to see this iconic urban decay location in person. Would love to go inside on a for real tour next time around.
Worth waiting in line in the rain! Imtersting architecture and a thoughtful exhibit on the history of Detroit. Excited to see what it will become.
My name is Beth French. My 81 year old grandmother, my daughter, and I visited the train depot when Ford had the free tour. It was wonderful watching my Grandmothers face. The train brought My Great Grandfather, Great Grandmother, my Grandmother and my Great Aunts and Great Uncles to MI from PA because my Great Grandfather was going to work in 1945.In the 80s my Grandmother bought a peice of the depots architect from an antique dealer. Im not sure what she paid, but it still hangs on her fence in her garden to this day.My Grandmothers name is Donna Earp.
Nice to see that somebody is going to finally fix this place up
A local treasure that is worth a visit if you haven’t seen this historic building.
We attended the Ford public announcement and then toured the station. Thank you Ford family for saving the station and supporting Detroit and Corktown.
Super excited for Ford Motor Company and Michigan Central Station!
Its a pity to see such a majestic building closed for the public and abandoned. The redevelopment of the Michigan Central Station would make it a perfect place for restaurants, hotels, and lofts that could be rented.
Old abondon train station nothing much. Cant go in due to construction. Nothing much to see.
Super cool, very abandoned and eery vibes. Being here just give you the chills and can’t help but think of all the history that occurred.
Classic place around Detroit; its now remodeling but still looks amazing. Old classic architecture and design. The zone around its no so nice, but still an attraction to visit once.
Super cool spot to go and visit in Detroit. Unfortunately it is closed and is only popular because of its distraught look. Hoping someone cleans it up and we can make something of it!
Im renovating it with new steel !Ironworkers Local Union 25Ideal Contracting rocks!
Was a great adventure seeing first hand. The work Ford is going to have to bring back to glory again . . .
Thank you Ford! This landmark has been saved and will continue and grow to be a bigger attraction once the restoration is complete. I cant wait to take a tour. This is one of my favorite places in Detroit. This is great for the city!
So we were sitting out front not directly in front of the train station but one street over the security guard for Ford Motor Company came over and told us that they work for Ford Motor company and they have pool in the city of Detroit they will call the cops and have us all issued a ticket if we dont leave immediately Ford Motor Company does not own Detroit does not own public Street Ford Motor Company can go f*** off
Look forward to seeing the finished product.
My goodness, what a beautiful piece of history and architecture! We took our group photos here in front of the old Central Station, and they came out just perfect. Although there is no staff per se, the grounds were beautiful, if inaccessible, and it was a real joy to be able to get so close.
Really hope Ford let the public in once the restoration and rebuilding is complete. Fantastic that such an iconic building is getting a new lease of life.
Best historical place Ive ever been. Loved it!
Beautiful place
Awesome part of history
Been here a few times for work
Wish I could go inside. Windows were replaced and look great.
Great place.
That place is amazing. I got the chance to see it on several official occasions to see the renovation moving forward. Not an easy job. Cant wait to see it when the work will be done.
What a beautiful building! Despite it falling into disrepair! Im super excited to see what Ford has planned! My biggest dream? Is to reconnect the existing tracks at the Grand Central stations still working main line, with the old switch at Greenfield Village! F.Y.I. Yes, there is 2 switches, one from the current working main line into Greenfield Village & one from the Village to the inside of the Henry Ford museum. Thats how they got the train exhibit in the building in the first place!! It would be great to be able to tour to & from the Grand Central station & Greenfield Village & the Henry Ford museum!!!
I dont really remember this place from when I was a kid. Its always been abandoned. It is fascinating to me however. Today It was the perfect backdrop for the CassTech, class of 99, 20 year Reunion!
Staff are amazing to work with and the Building is a Site for Sore Eyes and will be much much more beautiful after they have completed it, good job to the Carpenters.
Excellent,, huge,beautiful old building
What great historical building
Looks like they are doing a bunch of work. The whole area now has security cameras and has a fence with razor wire. The windows have been replaced at the top. I am looking forward to seeing this place once its all fixed up!
What a great historical landmark. If Ford Motor Company comes thru as advertised on this reclamation, it will be a beacon that Motor City is once again roaring strong.
Must see of Detroits Comeback!
Was cool to go inside after so many years closed to public . . . Ford has a lot of work ahead to bring this diamond in the rough, back to its glory . . .
This place is awesome I cant wait to see it come back had to chase people out with other PDS I. The past and it was/is dangerous inside but Ford will bring it back Thank you for that commitment Ford
The Michigan Central Station is a historic landmark. It was in continuous use for many decades until Detroit went through what could be called a dispersion period when the central city changed. Manufacturing and residents departed for several different reasons. Rail travel also declined. The station was not needed as much of the freight transfer work could be done without needing such a large structure. At the same time manufacturing began departing the United States and notably from Michigan. The surge of building and expansion that had been expected in Detroit never occurred. The building was left vacant for some time and recently was purchased by the Ford Motor Company. The Ford Motor Company is repairing and remodeling the structure. There doesn’t seem to be any plans for resuming any sort of rail service at this location but we can hope, can’t we?The building already has new windows in it and is looking more like the powerful center point of commerce that it should be rather than the derelict building it was tending to.
Cant wait to go in and enjoy the upgrades. The movie Transformers was made here and Im sure that was exciting. Itll be a train station again, soon I hope
Classic Detroit, it will be impressive if the daunting, Herculean task comes to fruition. Great to see it resurrected.
An amazing building now under restoration. You can’t visite the site.
Amazing Detroit Michigan Landmark! Soo happy they are preserving it. Beautiful park out front. There is a great dog park close. Walkable restaurants, bars, and a distillery!
I cant wait for this building to get new life after the Ford renovation. Its history is fascinating and the future for Corktown is bright.
Beautiful abandoned wreck
Worst lines ever. Cedar Point lines move faster. Not sure why they were moving so slow but after 1.5 hrs I barely moved 3 lines. Ford should have planned this event better and had sufficient volunteers. Instead there were barely any. Also it seemed people inside where allowed to take as much time as they wanted with all if us waiting in the rain. They should have given a time limit as to how long you can tour.Ford you need a better event planner.
An architectural gem!! Its great to hear that Ford Motor Company is finally going to save this treasure. So, so glad it isnt going to be demolished! It will be awesome to see it when the work and restoration are completed.
Highly recommend visiting this site. This building contains so much history being up close and personal will have you in amazement.
It’s great to see this landmark being restored.
Awesome Detroit landmark. We have wanted to see the inside of the train station for as long as I can remember. Thank you to the Fords for being a major part in opening it to the public for a tour. We are so happy the station will be getting the much deserved restoration.
Thanks to Ford and their vision for the future of this iconic, beautiful building.
Its a very nice building, despite how it looks. But my family was excited to see the landmark
Its amazing to see this place being put back together!
Ford Motor Company presents Joe Louis Tower, would be a nice name to honor the late great boxer.
Can’t wait to see when it’s redone!
Incredible building. Glad to see it will be part of our history for many more years to come.
Absolutely Beautiful
This place is the beginning of a better Detroit.
Its an old building in need of much repair. As a kid, I traveled from there to New York many times and prefer to remember it that way.
Wonderful building. Sad that people let it fall into ruins. Best of luck to restoring it!
Liked it better when you could only get in from the secret entrance under the bridge and could get arrested for going there.
I loved seeing a history of Detroit! Lots of pics to bring home with me
It is a tremendous site to see and so pleased Ford are doing something about it. There is nothing to see apart from the building and no amenities are there, but absolutely worth a trip out just to see it.
In the middle of construction going to be beautiful after Ford is finished
Nice
Ford is doing some really fun stuff here! tours, laser shows, renovations! cant wait for the next event they have!
What a great piece o history!
It was cold but it felt great helpin people .Ive been there done that
I’ve loved seeing the progress being made on this enormous shell, to turn it back into the majestic gem it was meant to be. Can’t wait to see it completed!
Toured the building after Ford Motor Company announced plans to purchase and renovate the building! I was great to see in its current state! Cant wait to see it once its complete!
Really cool building! Glad to them restoring it.
Beautiful example bof old Detroit architecture
Great Place, great architecture. Hope they will renovate the place and give it a new dignity! Amazing architecture and a must see in Detroit! They should make a big education center like a library, for example!
Beautiful historical place located in Detroit. It was my first time seeing it and I was amazed by the architecture of this building.
We went here when it was open for tours before the massive renovation that Ford Motor Company has planned for it. I’m so grateful that this beautiful building that was left for ruin for over 30 years by it’s previous awful owner is going to be restored.
A photogenic and magnificent structure which is so dilapidated, it is more of a reminder of what it used to be. Its beauty is best appreciated from afar since it is closed to the public. As you walk around Corktown and look up to notice nothing but a single structure so old and isolated, it can only be described as majestically haunting. Stop from what you are doing and take in the view. Give it whatever meaning you want, but maybe this is more than a reminder of a past.
This is going to be something to follow as Ford does its restoration. A former sign of Detroits failure....now a sign of its rebirth !!!
The gateway to Corktown and Southwest Detroit. Renovations are underway, marvel at the size and architecture of the building. Close by Michigan Ave food and bar corridor. Mexican Town - just follow road under rail road bridge.
Cool place to go went down the summer for the announcement from Ford
This place is an architectural gem. Thanks Ford Motor Company for buying it for preservation and use. The plans of a tech center, restaurants, etc will add a major step in the resurrection of Detroit. Thanks again for keeping the dream alive.
Building has been bought by Ford Motor Co. & plans are to renovate building to make it their Hub for development of Autonomous Transportation into the future!! Building beautiful in its heyday! Hope Ford keeps it close to its original beauty!!
Great historical building! Glad to see it being rehabbed by Ford!!
Amazing landmark that is a gem for photographers. Ive seen a friend take a drone and do an epic video! This place is a must visit if you enjoy history.
Awesome visit!
So happy Ford bought this, hope they extend the Q line this far... Put a dedicated bike lane here too...;)
It was ok security made me more comfortable to be around it
Great effort by Ford to reinvolve the Detroit community. Would like to see re named by Ford as Fords Detroit Grand Central Station.
