The museum is quite impressive. Not only does it provide a detailed account of the African American experience from the days of slavery, but it has an in-depth view into Detroit’s own rich and diverse history. I’m very happy my family and I came during our time in Detroit. We left with a level of knowledge we did not have before and a renewed sense of the importance of allyship between marginalized communities to ensure equity for all.
I love this place! Ive been countless times. Once I took my daughter and I didnt tell her that the Harriet Tubman moved and talked. Omg it was so hilarious when she darn near jumped out of her skin from harriets movement and voice I do recall that if you were a bank of America member you get a discount.
Very educational and a great place to learn about African American history. I have visited the museums many times before, but it was great to come during the election time and visit the voting exhibits. I learned quite a bit during this visit.
This was an amazing experience. I like the way its set up, to take you through time. Its like a good story book. I had so many emotions while viewing the exhibit. And nothing really prepares you for what youre going to see and feel. I would definitely recommend. Unfortunately you can not take photos inside the main exhibit
Its a very well put together museum. My wife and I went this past Saturday and it just about brought us to tears. The museum will run you through a gauntlet of emotions. I recommend this museum for families
Amazingly powerful place. It allows you to get a solid sense of where we have been, where we are and how far weve yet to go as black Americans.
The exhibt was phenomenal. From Africa up to modern times the history lesson provides one who has no knowledge of self enough information to start ones own lesson of self
A beautiful place to learn about humankinds mistakes. A very deep and powerful history takes you to wrong doings from the past, offering in the same time the key to avoid them in the future. The staff was very professional and helpful. You can use a guide, but the gallery is self explanatory.Dont miss it if you are in Detroit!
I had an amazing experience. I loved the Voting Matters exhibit
The museum is/ always a life changing experience. No matter how many times you go.
Beautiful gem. Check the book store for deals on fine art from local artists.
This museum is worthy of visiting for the architecture alone. Pay attention to the beautiful doors and the glorious dome. History is controversial but do not shy away from this museum. Visit their website and find an exhibit that captures your interest and go! The current exhibit of Queen is amazing.
Fantastic museum with historical connotations. The historic tour is quite sombering. The art pieces are quite beautiful.
My sister and I had time for one museum. We were so happy we choose right. It was a free day, so no admission. The entrance is breathtaking and set the stage. We saw an exhibit on hair and one on black seamstresses/fashion creators through history (mindblowing). The Still We Rise piece was humbling and eye opening. To experience that history on your own, the way it was designed really put things together (Im a visual learner). Great for all ages, whether your fully knowledgeable or not. They also had an event downstairs and I was able to purchase from local artists and jewelry makers. Cannot wait to visit again.
This place was so informative. I suggest experiencing it for yourself!
Awesome exhibit, glad I experienced this trip with the fifth and sixth grade students if Eagles nest academy!!
The tour is a must! Very educational and inspiring!
Friendly staff, some great exhibits and great price.
Great place! Very educational and profound
I take my babies here a few times a year. You couldnt possibly learn everything in this museum in one day. The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff are very helpful. They offer free admission some days and have different events within the museum. This is a great place to take children for a grand learning experience!
Helpful, professional and friendly staff made visit extra special.
Beautiful artwork with vibrant colors. CCH Pounder exhibit was amazing. So much history and so much to learn. Definitely worth the tour!
It was a very informative and moving experience to visit this museum, especially the belly of the slave ship. I had chills. If youre in the area, you should certainly go. Military personnel enter for free.
The museum was an eye opening experience. It illuminated our nations dark history of the enslavement of West African to showing the light our nation can be once those slaves were set free from the peculiar institution, and given an opportunity to live as freemen and women.
Haven’t been back to the The Wright Museum since I was a kid.The When We Rise was an amazing experience. It really dives into the history of Detroit and the world through the African-American experience. You need about 2 or 3 hours to really take in the exhibit and explore the history of Detroit.
It s getting a bit old but it s still great ! Ask for a tout with Don, he s the best. And stop by the shop to support their work.
Excellent thats all i can say ..You must visit
The Museum is a Must See! From cultural art to life like sculptures and exhibits. It is moving, if you havent been or taken your kids you need to put it on your list of things to experience.
One of my favorite places to visit and participate in various functions. Until recently, the largest museum ever of African American History artifacts and exhibits. Continuing to provide programming that is accessible to all. An educational experience well worth the visit.
Great cultural exhibits, window to the past.
I absolutely love the Wright African American museum. The staff is so knowledgeable, the exhibits are so informative and well done. It went during the grand opening as a kid and it is still just as wonderful. Glad I got to take my children.
I love this museum. It is full of history that everyone needs to know, especially African Americans.
We had a great experience bringing 50 of our high school students here. Our guide Jonathan did such a great job engaging the students and explaining the history. The museum is beautiful and the staff is excellent. Can’t wait to go back next year!
Its a riveting adaptation of true African American culture and history
Outstanding cant wait to go again
I recommend everyone attend this museum. Adult subject matter discussed.
Gorgeous building. Wish art collection was wider, deeper. I feel so much more potential. Need more aggressive fundraising. Also great job being a community center of celebrations. Todays holiday celebration was enjoyable, well done!
I LOVE the Charles H. Wright Museum. I frequent the Museum often, but make it a priority to be there during Kwanzaa celebrations. The Charles H. Wright is the crown jewel of Detroit, and I pray it continues to provide great cultural and historical knowledge for posterity! Peace and blessings.
Love the experience went here for my vacation This is one of the most amazing things Ive seen in my life the True history of the African History
For US... This was a BEAUTIFUL Kwanza celebration
First time visit even tho we have always lived here. We spent 3+ hours seeing all the exhibits. The permanent exhibit “And Still We Rise” takes the longest. It is very moving and extremely well done. We learned and relearned much today. The two side art exhibits did not take too long but were very entertaining and worthwhile. The staff and docents were very friendly and helpful. We felt very welcome. (And in case you’re wondering, we are not African-American)Highly recommend this for everyone.
The African Museum and such a beautiful wonderful place 2 here and see about history black history I visit from Dallas and I had to bring my mom and my son so they could take part in the wonderful tour that Donovan gave us thank you Donovan such a wonderful speaker
Beautiful space. Loved the trip from african coast to the new world in the cargo ship, it was heavy and emotional. It was worth the 5 stars alone.I do wish there was more actual art like paintings and sculptures done by black artists because there are so many artists creating today. Overall, it was a dope experience. I think there are more present day artists that could be incorporated into a space like this.
Amazing museum. It is a gem. Dont miss it. A must in the cultural district in Detroit.
Very well done museum! Im really impressed with the information and how realistic they try to make everything!
Its such an experience. I took one of the tours with my class (our guide was Johnathan), and he really told us all the information in such a beautiful way, despite the tough topics discussed at times. Its full of history and leaves you full of wonder and amazement. I think everyone should go to this place.
The museum is structurally magnificent and easy to navigate. I enjoyed the displays and the information that was presented. It was very uplifting. It uplifted me so much that purchased a membership.
An architectural wonder of a building. The grand entry hall is an acoustic master piece. I had no idea that it could take a soft voice and amplify it into the round of this huge space. And when it happened to me - the next voice I heard was that of MLK and his presence - I have a dream...The Queen art work is colorful, creative, beautiful, happy, sad and wide ranging in its representation of different art forms. A wonderful gift from CC Pounder to any art patron that gets to see it.
Walking tour of the history of African Americans from the beginnings of mankind through the journey from Africa to the United States into present day. Very vivid experiential learning. Additional presentations of African American artistic expression.
Great exhibits on fashion and the history of African Americans right now. Did you know that an African-American woman designed the wedding dress of Jackie O?
This was great! It is so much bigger than it appears from outside! There was so much to see and experience. It was also a great value for what they charge for entry. Be sure to donate a little extra. The gift shop was nice and had some art pieces for sale also. We didnt even get to see the whole museum because we underestimated the size and content of the place.
Great experience my daughter had a tribute ️ for June tenth.
I visited this museum for the first time last week and it exceeded my expectations. The employees were friendly and welcoming, and the exhibits were engaging, powerful, and well done. I will definitely be back!
I love this place.
History. Collections. Art. Learning. Truth. Whats not to love!
I am so grateful for visiting The Wright Museum. It tells the powerful story of our one human history and human freedom for the WHOLE HUMAN RACE. (I apologize that in the past I wrongly thought it was only for those other people.)
I actually went to the African American Festival which was outside of the Museum. It was great! The entertainment was excellent! The crowd was great. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Ive been going every year for several years. I absolutely love going.
Great experience. Much larger exhibit than I thought, truly showed the struggle of the African Americans. Theres even a portion the resembles the actual conditions of a slave ship. Truly horrific what our American ancestors were capable of.
Went to the African American world festival any Troy over the weekend and I had the opportunity to visit a great exhibit at the Charles H Wright Museum of African American history. I would advise everyone to visit the Charles H. Wright Museums, And Still I Rise exhibit. This is a phenomenal depiction on the history of slavery. Unless you know where the African American culture has been where they come from and where theyre going. This culture has come a long way and they should be respected for it.
Wonderful place to explore for educational purposes, Also nice gift shop to pick up a few gifts for yourself or the holidays
I have gone to the Charles H. Wright museum many times for school research or just to see the captivating exhibit Still I Rise but to be at Aretha Franklins viewing was magical, magnificent, iconic, and historic. I am now anticipating her exhibit September 21, 2018. If it is anything like the Motown exibit we (Detroit) and visitors are in for a treat!!
This is an amazing and powerful museum, an important educational experience for anyone. The thought and time that are put into the “And Still We Rise” exhibit was breath taking. Easily takes 2+ hours but is engaging the entire time. An extremely good value for the tickets too, only $7 for adults! You will not regret this one bit. One thing to note is that you can not take photos inside any of the exhibits.
Loved this place!! It was so interesting and rich with history. The depiction of slavery made me feel like I was truly there and grateful that I didnt have to live during that time. The cost was very inexpensive for the amount of information that you learn. I will definitely visit again!! Highly recommend to all!!
Great experience at the Wright Museum! The building is beautiful the exhibits are great, we did a self paced tour through the the exhibit Still We Rise. Gift shop is a little pricey but the staff s very nice & professional.
Interesting museum. Definitely want to go back. Our tour guide Jonathan was awesome!
Great!!! Transported me to a different place in time.
Came here for a fashion show to support Kouture for Kolbi, and even though they kept getting rained out, they sure got it together and delivered an excellent fashion show!
Really interesting museum in the museum district or Detroit. Absolutely worth it. Actually ended up in a hustle moves dance class down stairs somehow. Overall great experience
I was here for sociology. I couldn’t find the parking garage so I parked residential and a tour guide/ historian to ask questions to. Everything else was good
Best time.... Beautiful
Has been one of the best places Ive been all year. excellent! a must-see!!!
This was my 1st time there, didnt get to see everything but what I saw I found very nice, will be returning.
We have had the opportunity to visit some of the largest black museums in the country the one in Washington DC, Philadelphia & Cincinnati... But none of those brought to life the experience of being stored in a slave ship as cargo... It is a visual and autubel experience that you will never forget. It also led to us purchasing a family membership to bring back the remainder of our family and grand kids to see and hear the experience.
Great place to go for black history month
You internet shows the place open when it is not... A wasted travel very disappointed
Amazing experience. Wonderful how the city, and the world showed up for Aretha Franklin!
Visited the When We Rise exhibit and was very impressed. It was good, but there were too many of the interactive stations missing. Their were a lot of lost opportunities to educate. The architecture of the building is impressive, the rotunda demands your attention when you walk in. I would appreciate the support given to traditional museums at this location. A little TLC would enhance the experience and maximize the cultural experience. The staff seemed to appreciate their jobs and were welcoming.
A wonderful place for learning our culture and history!
Staff was on time and excellent helping with my Mothers 80th Birthday dinner. We went on a tour and it was an experience I will never forget. People must come and see what, where it all begun, slavery and the history. I cried for my ancestors and I thank God they dont have to suffer like animals anymore.
Loved the old time downstairs area, the kid loved the kid rock room where you can make your own music
Amazing field trip. I will be back and bring people. I need to see the Queen exhibit.
What a wonderful establishment, you have to go there and see how people were packed in such a small space Im not gonna tell you what Im talking about but youve got to go there it is one of the most interesting establishments teaches you about the realities of being black in America! Every suburban school should that their whole staff!
Definitely a must go when youre visiting the Detroit area. Ive been numerous times and the exhibits are unique and informative as well as based on facts. The museum itself is an amazing and beautiful structure.
Words can not express my feelings. You have to see it for yourself. Awesome. So much history. My first time in Detroit. I am so glad I got a chance to see it.
I was totally excited when my clients chose this museum as their wedding venue! The staff there is very professional, really easy to work. They made my clients wedding feel like a priority. The historic artifacts served as a unique backdrop which set the tone for the day! This is definitely one of Detroit’s precious jewels!
Absolutely PHENOMENAL.. ITS FEED YOUR MIND WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRIALS WE HAVE ENDURED. AWAKENING YOUR SPIRITS and touch your emotions. We RAISE and may continue to DEPLETE the statistics.. Rebirth of BLACK BOTTOM.
Filled With lots of history it interesting artifacts. The building is beautiful and very spacious, It is clean and well kept, You can also rent space for special events such as wedding. If you’re looking for something to do in Detroit this is my recommendation.
A Great Museum telling the story of African American History starting in Africa coming forward. I was do educated and impressed, the Museum actually has the replica of a slave ship. A Great place to visit, give yourself plenty of time.
Very informative, eye opening
Its really beautiful. I went to see Nicole from New York Times talk about her book and the hardships of being what people called African American and how we made American because without us there would be no America. That we ARE the Americans. It was beautiful.
The people were helpful and knowledgeable about the exhibits. The exhibits were truly moving and emotional. Will take time to come again and fully walk the halls.
A unique experience! Very educational and interactive. The slave ship is ... like nothing Ive ever seen.
Very historic. Wonderful display of African American history and culture. Plan to include on your much see list.
The And Still We Rise exhibit is breathtakingly well executed. The staff are warm, welcoming and professional. The gift shop is a treat. The facility well kept. It was the perfect Mothers Day outing for my friends and me. When I return to Michigan, I will plan to visit again.
Great Experience for Me. I enjoyed it. The Slave Ship was awesome. The Museum is beautiful and will always be a Memory of My trip to Detroit.
I went to a talk and reception for an exhibit on President Obama given by photojournalist Andre Smith. The photos are breathtaking and inspirational. Smith explained his process for determining the best angle, space, subjects and subject matter to shoot. His attention to detail is both superb and amazing. The exhibit runs through June 30, 2019 and is worth seeing.
