A nice gem located in an interesting area of Detroit. There is a ton of history here and there are often excellent events going on here, like soccer tournaments, ghost tours, Christmas dinners, historical re-enactments, etc. I feel like tourists don’t really go here, but it’s definitely worth a few hours of exploring. You can see freighters up close and look at some old native mounds. There are also a lot of houses and the area is great for photography.

There are 300 years of history here. Detroit is 70 years older than the United States. During the Revolutionary War and the War on 1812, the British were on the Canadian side of the River and Historic Fort Wayne was the front line. This fort was a headquarters office during both World Wars and the first place Vietnam soldiers saw on their way to duty. Many of the buildings have asbestos in them and are slated for demolition. But there are people here working to keep as much of the history intact as is practical. The new Gordy Howell bridge will be built next to this site in the coming years.

Historic Fort Wayne was amazing to see. I was there for their car show and got to see the place packed with cars and people having a great time. The place has a mix of buildings that have been restored or preserved that you can go in and walk around, and other buildings that are in need of restoration that you can see but cannot enter. The central fortifications are entered through brick underground tunnels that are sooo cool!

I went for two events--civil war days and colonial days. Both were great and had period reenactors. We were also able to explore the grounds, which are nice and well kept. There is the earth and brick fortification along with many more modern buildings and a few old tanks and guns. I recommend going when there is an event or tours. Without a guide, theres not a lot to tell the story of the things you see. Thats the only reason I dont give it a 5.

We attended Christmas at Fort Wayne. Ignoring the fact that it was pouring rain, my review is just on the event itself. This fort in Detroit is such an historic gem thats been ignored by the parks for decades and its such a shame because it deserves to be restored and lauded. I enjoy going there for this event, and the volunteers who make this happen are amazing. There were a few very stellar reinactors/interpreters who really shined and we thank you. Loss of one star because our guide wasnt much of a talker (huge credit for his volunteer work though) and because I always wish to learn more of the fort itself along the way. Fantastic event though. Do get there!

Also went to Selfridge ANGB, a Fort Michilimackinac fort and one near Port Huron maybe. Like the reinactment and encampments. Want to see the renamed one.

Pretty mellow, historical fort. A few dozen historical buildings in various states of care. Also a Native American Indian burial mound (remains are supposed to be about 900 years old!) Lovely Detroit River views and if you follow the trail that runs along the soccer fields to the water, there is a small grove of trees with some picnic tables. The fort is operated by both the city of Detroit and the Army and is almost 100 acres. The only reason 4 stars instead of 5 is because its a shame that so many of the historical buildings are being left to rot instead having basic care to thrive and be utilized by the community. There is a decent amount of parking here. Be sure to stop at the kiosk on your way in. Im not sure if there is a cost as Ive only come for the youth soccer, but I think all City parks are free.

It is remarkable that this old fort still exists. Originally built during the War of 1812, it was expanded and re-engineered in the 1840s, and again during the Civil War. Out buildings and officers quarters were added over the years. The last military function was as a draft induction center during the Vietnam War. There is a lot of history here, including one remaining Native American burial mound. The history in this location extends thousands of years. The fort is currently owned by the City of Detroit, but it may be transferred to the National Park Service in the coming years. There are tours on weekends, which I highly recommend. Check the website for dates and donations for taking the tour.

This place is awesome! You should take a tour of the Fort and see some history. Once you go through massive concrete walls you come out to a huge area of open grass. You would never believe this place is in the city of Detroit! The Historic Fort Wayne Coalition works very hard to try and preserve the history of the fort and it shows! They have done a great job on preserving some of the buildings! Other buildings are starting to fall down, which is very sad! It is well worth the $5 price for the tour!
