Our guide was well versed on the minute details and history of each stop. More importantly he had a lot of pride in his city and it showed. He had good jokes and interacted with all of us. We werent rushed and he recommended places to eat and other things to do. The carriage is covered and the health of the horse is paramount. He took time to explain the horses age, health, and safety routines. Definitely worth the money.
We had the best tour guide (thanks Dave!) and the best time in Charleston thanks to this company and their friendly and knowledgeable guide! We had witnessed another company guide make a unfriendly remark to someone that was directing him where to unload (offload)..and we were praying he wouldnt be out guide, turns out he wasnt with this company thank goodness! Dave was outstanding and a true pleasure! He was friendly and encouraged us to say hello to Chance on our way out. It was by far our favorite outing in Charleston!
By chance purchased tickets to ride on a Classic Carriage Carriage ride. We were so lucky to ride with them. We rode on a carriage driven by Patrick and pulled by Carson. Patrick is not only a wealth of knowledge regarding historical Charleston but also truly funny. He kept the ride very entertaining. The star of the ride is an awesome draft horse by the name of Carson. He is a beautiful and smart animal. Patrick and Carson worked very well together and made this the perfect ride. I would recommend Classic Carriage to anyone. They truly care about the horses that they work with.
Unbelievable these horses are made to parade tourists around in 95 degree heat while being forced to walk on hot pavement. I would never give money to this abuse.
Matthew was an excellent tour guide. He was so knowledgeable. At dinner tonight I was spouting off all sorts of facts about Charleston, it’s history and architecture. My husband was like, “Jeez! Where’d you learn all of this?” I really enjoyed Matthew’s calming personality as well as subtle humor. Thank you!
Patrick was a great tour guide. Funny and gave an unvarnished look at Charlestons history. A great operation. Really glad we decided to do the carriage tour. Highly recommend!
We really enjoyed our ride. It really gave us an overview of Charleston, and now we have a better idea of what to see next time we are here. They were able to accommodate the 5 of us going earlier than we had planned which worked out well with our schedule. We would use them again.
Josh and Bill were great guides! Definitely make Classic Carriage works your carriage tour of choice!Josh was full of information and very entertaining.Bill deserves a candy cane!
Ive seen at least 3 horses get injured on these tours in the past year and sadly one recently died. Please make an operational change to remove horses from your tours.
Absolutely the best carriage tour. Ask for Joshua. He was a delight to have as a tour guide and he knows his local history. He doesn’t script through like a normal tour and was a delight and funny as well. If you have a chance, take their tour. It’s not all the same route either so enjoy it. Ask for local stops and shops and they will recommend a few.
I love this place. Downtown Charleston is charming enough, but riding through it on a carriage was really relaxing and nice. I went with three other people and we all loved it.10/10 would recommend and plan on visiting again if/when I get the chance. The horses are beautiful and not sure how common it is but we definitely had what appeared to be a couple wild chickens just walk up to us and hang out while we waited. It was fun.
Absolutely great!! Informative and Patrick was very intertaining. I had a question he wasnt sure of so tell him to look up The Stone Fleet. I HIGHLY recommend these rides!
Patrick and Jackson were wonderful tour guides of their beautiful city. Thank you for sharing it with us this weekend.
Patrick and Carson were a fantastic duo. We greatly enjoyed our carriage ride around the residential parts of downtown Charleston. Patrick had a number of interesting facts about the early settlement of Charleston and how many parts of the historic district came to be. Super funny and he made history interesting!! We found it well worth our time and a great chance to ride around and get off our weary feet.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our carriage tour of Charleston. Josh and Barry were great. Joshs passion for Charlestons history and his horses were inspirational.
Had a great time seeing the city with Patrick and Berry! Patrick was very knowledgeable and entertaining. It was also great to hear about how much they care for their horses.
Patrick (our guide) and Frederick (our horse) were both EXCELLENT. Patrick was very informative and funny! He was quite the history buff and was able to answer all questions he was asked. At the end of the tour a guy on the street yelled out to Patrick and told our entire carriage that he was the best tour guide in Charleston. I totally agree!! Thanks for the great experience and sharing your wealth of knowledge. I also must mention, the guy that checked us in (i cant remember his name) was very accommodating. We had a change of plans and asked to get on a tour 2 hours earlier than we booked. He was able to make it work and had a lovely personality! Thanks for the great customer service. :)
Patrick is one of the best tour guides I have ever met. He was not only informative, but also very humorous. Im not really experienced with horses, but Barry made for a smooth cruise through town. I highly recommend this company.
My sister and Brother-In-Law are in town and we took a tour today with Patrick and Jackson. It was wonderful. As an American historian, it’s painful to go on some of these tours, but today’s was fabulous. Patrick is incredibly knowledgeable and obviously loves this city.
We had Patrick the guide and Jackson the horse. They were AWESOME! We loved the real truth behind the civil war. We had a great time loved every minute definitely will be back to them to learn some more truth about history.
We had a wonderful private tour with Scott and Barry. Scott is funny and knowledgeable. Barry was feisty and all business. We learned so much about the city, the people, the businesses, the history, and the carriage horses. This company takes retired Amish work horses and gives them a much easier work load. Then when its time to retire, the company keeps the horses as pets. Such heart! Highly recommended!!
I really appreciate Sam and Brittany; they are the owners and they are very kind and professional.
Our driver Patrick was wonderful and funny. Jackson our beautiful draft horse enjoyed showing us the town. They talked about alot of history and founding of the town. They also care about the safety of the passengers and house! Highly recommend!
Love this carriage ride. Beautiful scenery
The guide is what makes the experience memorable. I did this tour 20 years ago and I can still remember all the stories told by our guide. This time I was so so disappointed with our guide, John, with Classic Carriage. He was just rambling on and on, throwing out random information, no story telling, no interactions with the guests. He mentioned he had been doing it for 15 years, perhaps he just lost interest and passion. Its time to bring a fresh face with enthusiasm to the show. I tipped him a dollar.
Scott was a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable. And the sweet horse, Bowie, gave us a great ride.
My husband and I were pleased with our civil war carriage ride tour. Our guide Patrick was very knowledgeable about the Charleston history and events pre-war, during the war and post-war. He was always aware of the horse and made sure Bodie was comfortable in his surroundings and took time after to cool down the horse and give him water. This company does not appear to misuse their horses and they were conscientious about caring for them.
Could not have been more pleased with the tour yesterday. I’m ashamed I cannot remember our tour guides name (he had his dog Miley on the tour and the horse was Jackson. Our tour guide was awesome! His story telling skills were stellar (history major) and he was pretty funny too. Very entertaining and safe tour! ALWAY LOOK FOR THE GREEN CARRIAGES AND BLACK HORSES FOR CLASSIC CARRIAGE WORKS!!
We had the best experience learning about Charleston history. Our tour guide Patrick was the best. He is very knowledgeable, friendly, funny, well spoken. We definitely will recommend this carriage tour. Thanks again.
John Polk is the very best tour guide in Charleston. His quick wit, genuine southen charm, combined with his love and knowledge of history guarantees a most interesting and entertaining ride.
First off, Carson the horse was simply an amazing, beautiful animal. Our guide, Patrick, was okay. He had good stories but not super interesting about the history of Charleston. Ive done other carriage tours in years past and learned a great deal of history about my favorite city. Today was not my favorite carriage tour.
Josh and Chance made a great team. History with some laughs.
We were so impressed with Classic Carriage Works in Charleston. Our guide, Patrick, had an amazing amount of knowledge and a wonderful personality. The horse, Franklin, was very well-trained and easy to guide.
Perfect carriage company! Focus.is on the horses.as well as the visitors! Great guide and great ride!!!
Scott was a great tour guide and chance the horse was a good boy too!
Great your guide Scott, he knows so much about Charleston, you want to see more of the city.
My husband and I loved our tour with Patrick and Jackson! Highly recommend! :)
Thouroughly enjoyed the carriage ride. Found it to be a great way to tour and learn about historic Charleston. Our guide Pat had tons of information and stories that kept us smiling. It was a great time!
Accommodating and friendly, this tour guide service was great. We had a party of 10 and reserved the Civil War ride of the city.....our tour guide Ginger was amazing! I highly recommend you request her on your tour as she not only paints you a picture with the knowledge but keeps you interested with some of the lesser know facts. Really, really great time.
Awesome! Choose them over next door any time! Extremely professional & the horses are very well maintained... this coming from a life long horse person.
Classic Carriage Works is the best company to tour with in my opinion. They dont dress up in costume like other companies, they are more about presenting ample, accurate information about sites on the tour as well as answering any questions you have. They also offer a No Young Children tour if that suits you.
Will was our Guide, Franklin the Horse. Thank you for the Fun and Interesting tour.Highly recommend.....
Carson and Patrick are an amazing duo. Thank you for the knowledge and the care! You two were the best!
Great tour!!! Josh is the best tour guide we’ve ever had. He truly knows Charleston History!
We took the Slavery to Freedom tour and learned a lot. Our guide Dave was great! He is full of knowledge, very personable and obviously loves his horse. My only constructive criticism is that some customers (e.g., my husband) might find the seats uncomfortable because they are not padded.
Our tour guide Patrick was awesome! Very engaging and knowledgeable and he kept it fun.
We used this tour business because of a friends recommendation. The service was great and the tour was interesting and informative. Our guide was entertaining and his passion about the history of Charleston came through in his delivery. We enjoyed our historical tour.
Absolutely fantasist our guide was wonderful
Our guide Scott and Ellawoods (sp?) were great! Enjoyed very much!
They are awesome. Our tour guide Patrick was awesome and very knowledgeable and the horse Larry was awesome as well.
Excellent guides, beautiful town if you like history. Relaxing and informative and most of all affordable!
Awesome tour. We were visiting from out of town and loved listening to the history.
Patrick was funny, knowledgeable and charming. Bud was a great guide and looked to be a happy and healthy horse!
Patrick and Barry were wonderful
Another shout-out for Patrick (the guide) and his entertaining take on Charleston history. Special thanks to Barry (the horse) who took us around.
Nice way to see the city and learn some of the history of the city. Pleasant and knowledgeable tour guides.
Really liked this tour. Our guide really knew the history of Charleston. I recommend if your looking for a tour.
Ben was excellent! We took the guides civil war tour and loved it. We expected to get some Info about battles in the area, what we got was an incredibly interesting lesson in the political climate and happenings leading up to and during the war sprinkled with fun facts. Classic Carriage Rides, Bens a keeper!
Patrick shared some great history, for adults and our 10 year old. Gorgeous horse Carson did fantastic. No issues. About an hour, we had the residential tour
Wonderful! Extensive review on Trip Advisor... Check it out. Must experience.
We took a tour today with Classic Carriage Works and had John as our guide. I would highly recommend this company and hopefully your lucky enough to get John as your guide!
Always love carriage rides. This was great
The wife and I decided to book a carriage tour to check out some cool areas around historic Charleston. After extensive research and finding a sweet deal through Groupon we decided on this company. What I thought was neat is that they offered a tour that was mainly centered around Charleston’s history of the Civil War. There ended up only being 4 of us on the ride, which was nice. Our tour guide was Dave and his four legged partner was Larry. Dave explained how well treated the horses were, which was a concern of my wife. They get their temperature checked after each tour, are given plenty of water and hang out in stables with misting fans to take naps in. Dave said that the horses are given at least 6 weeks of “vacation” a year. The tour was fantastic. We hit so many historical sites and Dave was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. He was very sweet with Larry and talked to him a lot as well. The tour lasted about an hour and afterwards we were able to pet Larry and take pictures with him. Overall I would highly recommend booking a tour with this company and learn a ton about Charleston’s crazy and interesting history!
Patrick and Berry were great. Patrick was very knowledgeable and entertaining, and we all had a great time and would definitely recommend this company.
Driver/guide was awesome! Funny. Engaging. Horse was fit and healthy. Quality business.
Took the tour yesterday. It was a nice ride. However, I thought our guide to be very unkempt. His pants were falling low and his shirt was wrinkled and ascew. Did not see that from the other guides from the same company. Or any other carriage company. I dont buy for a minute his college education . Although he had some interesting facts his sense of humor was dry and sarcastic. This is just my opinion. I believe the company itself to be decent, Im hoping they read this and clean up the one guide who looks like he had an all night binge.
The highlight of our Charleston trip was the Slavery to Freedom tour with Matt of Classic Carriage Tours. We thought the whole thing would be hokey, but he (& horse Larry) was fantastic -- telling the stories that need to be told to better understand the Low Country, starting back in Barbados, and coming to modern times. I only wish we could have listened to him for another hour!!! It sped by too quickly. Do this! The tours on at 1 pm daily.
Chose this tour out of all the options today. Glad we did. Hal was our tour guide and was the best!! Highly recommend.
Patrick and Jackson were great!!!! Love the civil war tour!! Will be back!
Patrick shared a wealth of information with a dry wit and fascinating details.
John was knowledgeable and entertaining. Great experience!
Patrick and Bud were awesome tour guides. Patricks history degree was on full display. Highly recommended.
Best experience yet in Charleston. Patrick was a great host/tour guide.
Awesome tour on a beautiful day. The tour guide, Kris, was very knowledgeable, fun and had a great rapport with riders and Berry, the Percheron.
Patrick was a fantastic guide. He was funny as well as informative. It was a great tour!
The tour guide was frantic- witty, knowledgeable, and engaging on the business route tour. Hopefully our next trip to Charleston we can take a the residential tour and see what else they have to offer!
Scott and Carson was awesome.
Loved our tour guide Matt and his faithful steed Elwood... most informative guide we have had yet. Really enjoyed learning about the history of Charleston! I would highly recommend them, all the Carriage companies are great, but this one was the best!
I had a wonderful experience with dale and dale Jr. Very friendly and awesome experience. It was a tremendous tour. Done an amazing job and a beautiful scenery. Highly recommended if you want to enjoy the scene and your day she will make your day much better .
This was a great historic tour for my entire family. The guides are knowledgeable, affable, and personable. Charleston is a great City to tour, and going on a horse drawn carriage is a great way to do it. I found this particular vendor to be very professional and accommodating. I recommend it
The Slavery to Freedom Tour- that one hour- is life-changing. I returned home and shared snippets about it with a colleague and for him, it was life-changing. I tell myself that I have a bad memory but I am able to recall almost every detail. The guide is a vivid hi-storyteller who recounts the plight of Africans in America with remarkable honesty, insight and compassion. This tour is a must-do for lovers of knowledge and seekers of truth. God bless this young man for sharing this gift with the world. That people like him exist gives me hope for the future of race relations in America.
Great experience! Learn a lot about Charleston!
We took the tour in mid-October and it was very educational - A great way to see the historical sights of Charleston. Eric (our guide) was wonderful and Elwood was as former Buckeye - coming from Sugarcreek, Ohio!
Patrick was very entertaining and Franklin did a wonderful job. I highly recommend this tour.
We did a tour with Eric, the tour wasnt bad and the carriage ride around town was pleasant but the presentation itself was a bit dry. The material of the tour seemed all about the local real estate scene.
Super tour, guide was awesome and very knowledgeable. And Miley (his dog) was a perk for me the dog lover. Highly recommend!!!
Excellent historical tours of Charleston with a knowledgeable staff and the happiest horses. Concerned for the horses welfare? I HIGHLY recommend asking for a barn tour to learn about how happy and spoiled these animals are! This company is always proud to show the passion and care they put into working together with these gentle giants.
Wonderful experience with my family. Excellent tour guide kept the tour engaging.
My mother and I took the Slavery to Freedom tour. Our tour guide was name Matt . It was absolutely fantastic!!!!! We learn so much about Charleston and slavery. I recommend this tour to anyone who want to get tidbits of information regarding slavery and Charleston that theyve never heard before.
Edu nice and knowledgeable tour guide. We had enjoyed it..
The entire staff was extremely friendly and our tour guide with Bill our horse was awesome! Friendly, knowledgeable all around wonderful experience! This small company is the way to go!
Had a great time today with Carson (the horse) and Patrick (the driver) touring the historic district in downtown Charlestown, SC. Patrick was outstanding on three fronts; managing traffic, managing Carson and relaying a deep and wide knowledge of Charlestown in an engaging manner. Very confident young man. His selection of the top three notable Charlestonions was unscripted and insightful. Well done, Patrick.
Bones was excellent! Dale Jr. was our horse and almost could have done the tour solo. You can trust these guys for a top-notch experience.
Good guide/horse, bad onboarding experience. This was my unfortunate introduction to the famed charleston, SC. I called at 2 pm and was told that tours leave every 30 min. I arrive and I am told I have to wait 30 min. For the next tour and I am not sure why in these two encounters I am not asked for my name so I can have mu place reserved because when I come back, I am told I have to wait 40 more minutes because my name is not on a guest list. Finally, I go on the last tour of the day. The guide was what saved the experience. I felt bad for my friend who was with me as this was part of his birthday experience. Final verdict, zero for customer service and two starts for guide and horse. My auggsugges is to go with a company that has customer service to avoid aggravation.
Staff was very friendly and professional. Carriage driver was very knowledgeable and very personable and gave a great tour. Fun way to see the city.
Well for the tour guide that was raised and Yankee fan then became a Braves fan this is for you. I wanted to tip you two cents in the hope to talk to you futher. But the wife would not let me. If you hate your job so much and hate tourism I would suggest moving on from your current position. We have been on many carriage rides and this one was the only bad one ever. Your pompous and arrogant beatdown of the term Holy City is uncalled for. I think that I may have stirred you when I mentioned that God built these horses to work. And you stated God didnt build these horses man did.Ha! By far the worst trip we have ever had. My wife came off saying we would never take another one of those trips. I insured her that we would and that one bad apple will not spoil it for us. Take care God bless and I will be praying for this fellow.
