This is probably the best $10 you will ever spend if you love history. Lots of history describing the building and what all happened there. Very old antique items. This museum does a good job with really explaining how times were back in the day. Absolutely recommend the tour that they give along with the ticket. Both times I went I learned something new. You could probably spend about 2 hours in here reading everything.
Too many photo posters (not actual artifacts) which translates to plenty of reading so it seemed more like a gallery than a museum. For a $10 admission fee I was expecting to see more. The vault walls and ceiling of the dungeon below is nicely upkeep do that was cool. All these repeated photos here on Google is pretty much it.
Very cool piece of history! Our tour guide in the dungeon did a great job at depicting the use of the building.
We were lucky to find the Old Exchange during a Charleston Downpour! The exchange is full of History and the guides do an excellent job sharing stories of when it was built and rebuilt. The dungeon we found interesting specially since its the only part of the original building that is still standing. The stories were fascinating. We were able to see the building well and tour the Dungeon with a guide in about one and a half hours.
Who knew Charleston had such a RICH history surrounding the American Revolution? This facility, operated by the Daughters of the American Revolution, offers an extensive overview of much of this history. If youre in Charleston and have even a passing interest in the birth of this great nation, dont miss this landmark!
Great guide, great atmosphere! I love this building.
Such a historic place. Thoroughly enjoyed the vist and the cost is very reasonable.
Very cool historic building, definitely recommend taking the dungeon tour
Loved the history and artifacts as explained by our tour guide. Self guided 1and 2nd floors and a gift shop. Went here as a kid and just brought my own children here today.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here, but most especially our dungeon tour guide. He was knowledgeable and entertaining, full of interesting historical facts. I believe this would be a good activity for families as you can complete the tour in less than hour (although more time could be spent reading and exploring) and kids can learn history in a fun setting.
The cellar/dungeon is a guided tour (ours by a very witty guide), the rest of the building is self guided. Pretty cool to be in the same building that our founding fathers have been in!!
This was a great experience and the tour was fantastic. It only cost $10 per adult and well worth it! The dungeon tour was a little hot but what do you expect for a dungeon. The information was well worth it and glad to learn more of this countrys history.
The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon on East Bay Street in Charleston is an excellent place to go on a tour and learn about the history of Charleston. It is a good value for all that you get and I have enjoyed the experience each time I have been here and it is well worth a visit if you get a chance to do it.
Was great learning the history of the area. Wonderful tour. Our guide was excellent and thorough.
Not a bad tour. Old history tour available with sevral guides. If soloing check out the basement. A gift shop is available along with restrooms.
Worth a visit to learn some history, also some items made in USA in the gift shop
Fascinating history of one of the oldest buildings in the country. The knowledgeable and humorous guide was amazing!
The dungeon tour was small and a little short. I dont think children would be very interested. The tour guide was great though and you could tell he enjoyed his job. The history was interesting to learn. On the top floor a copy of the declaration of independence lay out for everyone to sign.
We’ve been there once before and chose to go again. We were not disappointed. Very historic!
If you enjoy history, heres a place to learn.
We had a WONDERFUL tour! Im a local and wanted to share the Old Exchange with my dear friend & her grandson! Thank you.
This place here!!! Amazing history here! Guided tours of the provost with the guides dressed the part. I really enjoyed the tour and learned so much about the history of Charleston! I recommend everyone go here if visiting Charleston and definently go up to the great hall!
Did the tour in mid January and it was well worth it. We learned quite a bit of history and facts in the short time there, one of the better attractions in the area. Tourist or locals should all enjoy this.
Very informative about the history of charlestons gruesome, sad, and malicious past. The guides here are very helpful and knowledgeable. If you go, its better to buy the combo tickets to visit this place and the slave mart a few blocks away.Student and adult was $23 for both places. They do have the dungeon tour downstairs and both guys are helpful to answering questions. Sad but loved it.
Really cool history.. My brother brought me and my family here. Surprisingly my teenagers enjoyed the history and were really fascinated.
Wonderful piece of history to go see if youre in the area.
This was one of my favorite field trip memories in grade school. I recently got to enjoy it again with my daughter on her grade school field trip. Our favorite os the dungeon!! Its a great place to learn about history!
Dude with the Join or Die tat is a great tour guide! Great tour!
I liked this historic building, but I don’t feel that I need to be back here soon. There is about a 30 minute tour of the dungeon that is just ok. It is a well built building and has survived a lot of wars, hurricanes and the big earthquake of 1886. It has a nice little museum that you can tour in 30 to 45 minutes. The building is one of a few remaining buildings where the US constitution was ratified and also was of big Importance when George Washington came to Charleston in 1791. It is worth the time and money (admission is $10 per person).
This was well worth the price of admission which was very reasonable! The artifacts are very cool and the history of the building is fascinating!
Very cool place. So much history and the guide was so knowledgeable and interesting to listen to.
History. Enjoy it. Learn it. Deep in history. Many iconic events have happened here throughout the centuries in our country. Just be mindful of your children here. Parents just dont seem to get it. Its a museum and you need to keep your kids in check and to respect a place of history and not let them run around like a bunch of heathens. We took the tour but the parents werent even keeping their kids quiet so we could hear the tour guide.
Excellent tour and fascinating history.
Educational and intriguing museum. Enjoyed the exhibits and thoroughly enjoyed the guided dungeon tour.
A great tour for a cheap price made this a great stop on our trip to Charleston. People dress in period relevant clothing from the 18th century. Our guide was impressively knowledgable and answered questions with a high quality answer. I got to stand where George Washington stood over 200 years ago.
Great experience and learned a lot about Charlestons history. Check it out!
This is a wonderfully preserved piece of American history! Its a must see in Charleston.
Really enjoyed the tour. Lots of history to learn about.
Jill and i bought a pass that let us go tour some of the best old historic Homes, and historic buildings. WE stood where our founding FATHERS of THE NEWLY FORMING UNITED STATES, AND SOUTH CAROLINA declared its independence from England.
Very much worth going
This was super cool, awesome history. People of all walks of lives were imprisoned here. Including 4 signers of the Declaration of independence.
A great visit to get an orientation to the history of Charleston. I did not know about the prominence of Charleston in colonial times or the American Revolution. The interpreters did a great job making the history that happen in the room come alive - especially in the dungeon. Bottom line, this was a great way to start of visit to Charleston.
This was a great place to visit on a rainy day during our visit to Charleston! Chris gave an informative and entertaining tour of the dungeon (30min) and the rest of the building was self guided, although there were guides around to answer questions. Everything was very fascinating. You can easily spend about 1-2 hours here and they have a partner museum as well for $5 more
Brings the history book to life seeing and being in what it was like back then.
Lots of History definitely worth the price and they have narrators that have lots of details of what actually happened
Very educational and interesting tour. Tony Youmans is the best.
It’s quite amazing to think George Washington was here. Great history lesson for older kids, teens.
Love that the old dungeon is all preserved. Especially loved that the original bricks and retaining wall were exposed! Unfortunately the rest of the house is pretty empty, but its nice to walk through.
Nice museum and good tour. Fairly cheap as well.
Interesting history of the 1700s.
Ive been to the Provost dungeon and Exchange building many times. And I always loved it! It is Rich with history architecture and fun.
I really enjoyed visiting the old exchange. Theres so much history in Charleston and this is a great place to learn a lot about it. It does cost a few dollars to get in but you get a tour of the dungeon and can tour the other floors at your own pace. My family did think the tour was a little boring but if you like history its worth doing and doesnt take a lot of time. You can be in and out in an hour. The building is very old and historical and they even have an old copy of the declaration of independence. They do have bathrooms which is nice if youve been walking around a lot and a little shop as well.
This was a very interesting place to visit and the staff was dressed in the attire that went along with the timeframe. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area.
A MUST SEE the tour guide was very informative lots of history.
What an awesome, extremely historic place to visit. Well worth the money to walk in and see first hand. Words cant adequately describe the feeling you will get standing in the same room where the United States Constitution was ratified! Not only that, you walk upon the same states where the Declaration of Independence was read out loud! Most certainly a stop you should make when walking around town!
One of the best museums Ive ever gone to! lots of quality material and a great presentation in the dungeon. what a great and historic building!
Fascinating! One of the three most historic places in the country. There is so much to see and learn. If you can only see one historical place in Charleston, choose this one.
A historical experience that is certainly worth your time. The architecture is a treat, but the really interesting parts are the stories of the history that has been made within those walls.
A great place to learn about the history of Charleston, SC. I enjoyed the enthusiasm of our guide, he was professional and told the story well.
Good information about our countries history
Awesome time great history museum
Amazing! Great historical site! Great tour and history lesson. The sweet lady hosting our tour was very knowledgeable!
Very cool piece of history. This place has been here for a looong time. Very informative and the tour/talk in the dungeon area. The guide was friendly and presented the information well with some funny parts.
Knowledgeable staff and a well-preserved piece of United States history! One of only 4 remaining sites where the Constitution was ratified! Take the tour!
The tour guide was very informative and learning the history was AWESOME. To dungeon was something to see but was spooky and had a smell of yrs old
Great tour, the guide was very energetic and fun. Lots of information and details throught the whole building.
It was informative 25 mins, the tour spoke very slowly but she was nice. Was there for my Greatest Son in the Worlds Birthday.
Great dungeon tour. Very informative. Small museum that I enjoyed. Very interesting.
Its pretty cool in here. It smells... dungeon-y.I didnt make a special trip to go here. I happened to walk by and thought it was intriguing. Its refreshing to have a Revolutionary War exhibit amongst all the Civil War and Confederate museums.
I love the fact that the dungeon included a free tour with your ticket price. Super informative too
Interesting historical place
What a surprise! The bottom floor had a most intriguing design with a whole lot of history. Good tour guide.
Great history and tours. One of the older buildings in Charleston
We got the combination ticket for the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon plus the Slave Mart Museum (which is closed on Sunday but you can use the ticket on another day). It was $15 per person, and it was a good deal. It is $10 for just the Old Exchange.Take the tour of the dungeon. You may have to wait and there is a replica of a post office on the main floor and upstairs are the bathrooms and ballroom where George Washington and many other historical and famous people have danced. They have old guns and some toys that that you can touch and get pictures with. The dungeon is downstairs, and I didnt see any elevator, so if you cant do stairs, you may want to ask before you buy a ticket. The dungeon tour was half an hour. The rest is self-guided.
The history here is mind blowing. What a cool museum to visit and an opportunity to dance in the same room that George Washington danced in 250 years ago. Well worth the visit!
Great museum and history tour.
I think this is the landmark of Charleston. This historical building and the surrounding area tell the history of Charleston. The building located closed to the Rainbow Row. I started walking from this location and there were lots of activities to do nearby. Don’t forget to take good photo here to save the memory of a trip at Charleston.
The museum itself doesnt have much to offer, but the tour of the dungeon was absolutely fascinating! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and had a lot of interesting tidbits and stories to share.
A must see in Charleston. You need to learn some of this stuff if youre an American. You wont get it in school. Great staff!
The your was enjoyable. The dungeon is pretty neat, though the history of it is disturbing and sad. The ghost stories about it are fun to hear and people seem to really get into it. Like an adult version of scary stories to tell in the dark. I would say its a regular tourist spot so keep that in mind. The staff do have a good time with their roles which is cool.
Gave it 4 stars just for the history that has happened in this building. Not a very big museum but worth a stop. Admission is only $10 so it is worth it to check it out.
Interesting museum $10 entrance fee guide included in price. Gives a good Idea of historic Charleston when it was British Colonial Seaport.
Five stars is all for the dungeon tour. It was very informative and Chris did a great job storytelling. I hope they plan to do something more interactive in the great hall upstairs.
The history, the area, and everyone who worked there were great. It was all such a fun experience! Highly recommend!....:-)
Such a neat and historical place to visit! It is always fun to learn of the very unique and dense history that is Charleston. The pirate dungeon is a personal favorite! So interesting and spooky!
Very fun, amazing architecture, get combo with Old Slave Market.Tony and Ariel are great and very informative. Definitely worthwhile.
Fun historical location focused on the Revolutionary period. Particularly good for kids.
Loved Charleston and this was one of the highlights. The history was unbelievable and the displays were very well done. The first two floors were self guided walk-through, the the lower floor dungeon was guided. Our guide was Chris and he was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. Charleston and the Exchange Building were were important to our history pre-revolution and through the civil war. Very glad we did it.
So much information . It was a great historical place to go
There is no reason you shouldn’t visit. This is one of only four buildings where the Declaration of Independence was signed that is still standing. If that’s not enough the staff was super friendly and entertaining. It doesn’t take a ton of time but it is a ton of history. You will not be disappointed.
A must do when exploring Charleston. I highly recommend this place often. Lots of history. Plan to spend at least an hour here. The Dungeon is good to take the kids, its not scary. I wish they would get the animatronics working again down there, my son loved to go when he was younger. Have been several times.
Neat (short) tour of the dungeon/jail. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and we learned new things about the city of Charleston (“Charles Town”). Definitely worth 30min-1hr out of your day. They do offer a military discount of tickets.
It was a great tour experience with many interesting stories and items. Would recommend if you have the time to spend.
One major historical sites of American history. It is a must see, great artifacts and historical content. Get your tickets as an add on to the Pirate tour. Our guide for the dungeon tour was a wealth of information and very funny.
Tour guide was awesome.. Really knee her history. Worth the money. Love it!! !
Great history lesson! I obviously dont remember everything from History class.
