This is a historical landmark to visit when you are in Baltimore so I made it a priority. It is really beautiful in here and I love the architecture of the building inside and out. You cannot go anywhere except the first floor of the library but you can see plenty from the ground floor. They are located in Johns Hopkins University so sometimes it is closed so just beware. This is the library that was the inspiration for Belle’s library in Beauty and the Beast so if you loved that movie or just love library in general check it out next time you are in town!
My daughter wanted to visit this library. Parking is limited, we had to park several blocks away. After a long hot walk we arrived to find out you can only access the first floor. I found it quite boring but my daughter was in awe and enjoyed skimming the books. It’s a beautiful library for taking pictures though.
I will drag friends from out of town here. They wonder why we are going to a music school library. Then they step through the door and go WOW. It you are in the area seeing the Walters Museum, this is worth seeing since it is right around the corner. If you can somehow see the rare book room that is worth it as well but it isnt generally open to the public.
The George Peabody Library is one of the most beautiful venues in the country and it is SO special to be able to host a wedding there. The whole process was seamless and everyone on their team was professional and offered a personal touch. We loved working with Laura and Sam and are so grateful for their quick responses, and help bringing our vision to life. We will cherish these memories forever!
We arrived literally 10 minutes before closing time on a weekend. What a breathtaking place. If you are a book lover you will breathe the scent of old paper magnificence. This is a must see. Park and walk the whole area, its a stunning part of Baltimore that many miss when limiting their visit to just the Port.
Historic, beautiful, and a quiet place to be in the middle of a busy city. We walked around taking a look at the ancient looking books. Theres 4 upper levels, but its not clear if the public is allowed to the upper levels. Its a well maintained facility as well. A great place of culture and history and part of what Baltimore is.
This place is amazing, if you love reading the library have more than 3000 books, youll sense the smell of old books when you arrive, there are many tables where you can sit and enjoy your reading, for free. Youll also have Wi-Fi and many food options outside the building. Take your camera, youre going to love this place and please do not disturb the readers.
The whole campus and library are closed. There is no mention on the Johns Hopkins site of this
As a wedding photographer with a background in architecture and design, Urban Row Photography would love the opportunity to capture a wedding in this historic and incredibly unique space! The lighting, and unending stacks of books with metalwork details and the black and white floor are so picturesque... being located in the heart of Mt. Vernon is especially great for portraits too. Love how timeless a space like this is!
A wonderful gem, it’s truly worth a visit. You are not allowed on any other floor but the main one, which is a bit sad.
Simply stunning. This library is a must see.
This is an amazing building, definitely worth a visit. We were unlucky because they were closed for a private event so we were only allowed to take a walk at the hallway which was also beautiful.
Incredible library, guaranteed at least one photo shoot there no matter what you do.Loved it.Live out your Belle from Beauty and the Beast fantasies.
A bibliophiles dream. The cast iron architecture of this library is stunning and well worth visiting. As a visitor, you can only access the ground floor but it is still gorgeous. We sat for a while to read and admire. Please be respectful of those students in the library trying to read and study!
The George Peabody Library is the 19th century research library of the Johns Hopkins University. Its called Baltimores Cathedral of Books, and if you visit, youll understand why. The library was built in 1878 and it has stunning cast-iron balconies and a massive skylight. Its closed Sundays and Mondays but has limited hours to explore the rest of the days of the week. Its so beautiful and well worth exploring if youre visiting Baltimore or live in Baltimore but have never been!
Amazing place! Books and books in a beautiful setting. Quiet please since this is an actual working library.
Most picturesque Library Ive ever been to. Go to the back room too. Its marvelous treasures are some youll tell the grandkids about :)
Its cool and like a dream come true, however I was disappointed that the access of books was restricted only to a few sections in the lower level. Apart from that, I think this would be a great place to sit and relax and do some study or research (on your laptop).
Great for photos, other than that, you can only access 1st floor and its not a real library where you can checkout books. Do not park in the area.
Stunning library! Lots of large tables for studying, but the lighting is dim and some areas are currently under construction.
Definitely recommend if youre exploring baltimore. visitors are only permitted in one area but it is gorgeous.
Built in 1870s, this library is amazing place for any book lover. With collection of little over 300 thousands volumes, when one enter in the main reading room, one can sense the fragrance of books. The architecture of the library is unique and it amazes the senses when one actually witnesses the main reading room. Library is very well preserved by the staff and staff is very nice and respectful.George Peabody Library is located near Washington monument and Emmanuel Episcopal Church which adds beauty to that place.A must visit place whenever you visit the Baltimore, MD. I enjoyed my visit very much.
The best place for relaxing your mind(if you like books). It is very well maintained library.
Such a lovely library! Definitely go. Unfortunately the upper levels are off limits.
This place is currently closed until Jan 2, 2019 for winter break. The woman at the info desk impatiently and rudely spoke to me as if I’m an idiot for not checking the library’s website before arriving. I was not rude to her at all; it was unprompted and unnecessary.
When I viewed this venue online, I fell in love. I figured I would call and schedule an appointment to see the venue. I spoke with Judy who was so not accommodating to a potential client. She was very short and not personable at all. I ended up making an appointment anyway even though she told me there may not be someone to show me around during that time. My appointment was 3/3/18. Do you know Judy had the nerve to reach out to me today 4/18/18 and say we held the date of 8/8/19 in January for you and if you would like this date you have until COB on 4/19/18 to contact us or we will release this date. First of all Judy, My damn date is 8/17/19, so the whole time you was holding the wrong date on top of that I had an appointment 3/3/18 and nobody reached out to see if I was coming or not, but TODAY you decide to email me the wrong date and give me one day to decide. AWFUL customer service, so I informed Judy that my fiancé and I already booked and found a venue with GREAT customer service, accommodating and personable. This is an important day and the last thing you want is to deal with rude employees at your venue.
Worth a quick stop in to see why everyone snaps a picture. Theres also a small exhibit space just inside that curates some of the cool stuff the library has collected over the years. If youre already in the area, check it out! Great rest from the heat on a muggy Baltimore summer day.
Great old library. Needs some tender loving cleaning.
Small but an impressive one. Free entrance
This is one of the great architectal and intellectual spaces of the world. Walk back in time in the architecture and look at one of their incredible manuscripts. Its all free as well!
The most beautiful library in the area! Also a great place to study
Sitting at a long wooden table surrounded by old books makes this a great place to write
Brilliant experience, just make sure you arent disturbing the readers!
Waist of time! I seen pictures of this library on Pinterest and on traveling websites so I decided to travel from Ohio to Maryland to see this library that i fell in love with. I was so excited to see this library and when I showed up just to find out that you are not allowed to touch any books, go into any of the little cubicle area of the shelfs of books or even up on a different level of the library! I was crushed. It was a beautiful library but I already experienced that with the photos. Thats why i say dont waist time with this library when planning a vacation. If youre in the area go see it but if not dont waste your time. What u get in the pictures is all there is for non staff people
