I wasnt ready for the slave ship exhibit. It is incredibly well-presented and one of the most difficult exhibits Ive ever seen, similar in nature to some on display in The Holocaust Museum. However, the fact that its from our American history makes it hard to witness in a different way. The fact that it is so hard to look at it means it must be pretty important to do so.Other exhibits in the museum are uplifting and inspirational. Its packed with information and asks a lot of the viewer in terms of the amount of content presented. This is a very impactful museum that is worthy of your support and patronage.
Amazing information. It looks like the details got better over the years. The slave boat was amazing and I think everyone needs to see it!
Very Educational and Im glad I had a chance to go. 4 s Would have gave 5s if only the Wax people look a little more realistic.
Although a little depressing, Ive learned a little about what has happened. The wax figures were great but the story behind some was not. I did not like the lynching exhibit. And the gift shop was closed.
I hadnt been here in years. Recently visited during a college sponsored trip. Upon entry, I was disappointed with the way the young lady conducted business in the ticket booth. She was not very professional and had little kids there with her. Not irritated by her having kids there because sometimes, as parents, we dont have a choice. Also dont know if this is a perk associated with working for a family owned business. I was more dissatisfied with her professionalism. Our tour guide was an elder named Nat Williams. He was charismatic and knowledgeable combined with deep Baltimorean charm. Ask for him when you book your next tour.A few other things that could stand improvement are the upkeep of the exterior of the building, the wax figures/exhibits could use some maintenance, and the gift shop needs to be up and running.
This museum has terrific assets and is one you should definitely make a point to visit anytime you are in Baltimore. The slave ship and lynching exhibits are especially powerful.
I came before and Its quite nice and lovely. I plan on visiting again once this whole cvoid thing ends
Amazing and informative Museum that every young person of African descent should visit
We took our daughter to visit this museum yesterday and it was a wonderful experience. Beautiful, life like wax statues that appeared to be watching us. A bus load of eager school children on a school trip were being given a tour with a knowledgable guide who explained the exhibits and was very sensitive to their ages, letting them know they were safe and that everything was a a recreation in wax. They had a slave ship you could walk through with chained wax figures and written narrations of what it was like for the captured Africans in those conditions. Towards the end we were very emotional and I cried leaving the lynching exhibition. This is a place All people need to visit, but especially people of color. I plan to refer people to this museum and return myself in the future. At this time they are asking for donations to expand, so I ask that everyone be generous and donate as will I.
As much as i love to show support i gotta be honest. I was very disappointed.
Always a lovely experience. Very informative with or without guides.
We came as a group and went on the Underground Railroad tour prior to visiting the museum. Our tour guide Mrs. Janice was phenomenal as she educated us during our tour to the Hampton plantation and orchard St Church. We are able to learn about historical landmarks in Baltimore and more about African Americans and our contributions to the world. This experience was very educational and has changed me forever!
Ive been to this museum twice and both visits were profound. Very educational... parts of US history that many want to forget but should never be forgotten. This visit began with a guide that spoke about the initial exhibits. He was awesome in his explanations. We were then ushered into a replica of a slave ship where me met one of the founders who gave details on this part of the museum. She was great and provided a feel for what it was like to be kidnapped and enslaved in this way... after that we were left to roam and read for ourselves. Most of the exhibits were well captioned. My issues were the crampness of the museum and the low budget feel... other than that it was very educational and interesting to see so many familiar faces in Wax.
Food was magnificent crabs steak salads ect
This place is awesome! Its not the glitz and glamour you would behold at a bigger museum, but slavery wasnt about glitz and glamour now was it? This museum forces you to face facts. The many states that were involved in slavery, the amount hung in each state, the size of slave quarters, the fact that reproductive organs of slaves were kept as morbid souvenirs, the slain bodies of children. Its one of the best museums that Ive visited, well worth the money.
This place is amazing, the information attached to each Wax figure is mind blowing.
Acknowledge the impact that African American have had on America is awesome to see.
The staff must be motivated to work if they want this place to stay open.
Love the place! So much history in the building does really open your eyes. Makes you want to be a better person and help others also. But building does need a remodeling job soon. Maybe we can all donate when we leave at the box so they can fix it up. Thank you guys for the history. We will be back!
The best place for familys to learn black history not taught they dont have the opportunity to know in school. I really love it my second time going I cried. But thats a part of the experience it emotional.
The artistic recreation of the slave ship is dreadful but interestingly created.Excellent informative source of information is stored for very vital historical account of our forefather. Special thanks to the founding fathers for creating such rich legacy. I employ everyone to go view, learn and experience it for themselves about their past.
I really enjoyed it but my son was scared as hell
Had the pleasure of going on a discounted day and given the honor of meeting Co-founder Dr. Morgan. This place is a critical piece of African/African American history. Its an enlightening timepiece that spans 5,000 years through history. There are wax statues dating back to ancient Ethiopia and Egypt along with sections depicting the horrific experience of the trans Atlantic slave trade through the American experience. While choices of wax statue figures can be debated, theres no doubt that this place has done an incredible job. For my children, it was great to see the varied culture experience in America that depicted positive and difficult truths. I would recommend this place a must do for any tourist or visitor.
This was an awesome experience for our youth!!!!!!! The information was very informative and they now appreciate how good they have it!!!!!!!
Every HUMAN being should see this museum and a must for persons of color. Graphically and visually displayed to feel and imagine what my people endured and presently enduring. The staff was friendly and the guide was more than knowledgeable of Black history. The museum will be modernized in the upcoming year let’s not lose focus of the message and information that is presented in this wonderful, food for thought exhibit!!
This museum is a great experience for those looking to understand the history of Blacks and African Americans in this country. A good balance of story telling and figure highlight, theres a lot to take in. A must consider of the city
This was one of my favorite Museums. It has so much history. I do believe that it can be spruced up a bit but the experience and all of the amazing wax figures will keep you focused on the information at hand. There was so much REAL information. The lower level even had information about lynching. I believe every black child needs to visit this museum!
Excellent walk through black history. Exhibits are a bit dated and building is not well furnished but it still exists as a valuable look into the movers and shakers throughout history who fought for freedom, human rights, and visibility for black populations worldwide. Some parts of the museum are harder to look at than others due to the graphic nature of the history of black people in this country (lynching, torture, and the slave trade), but all of it is insightful and necessary to understand the things that the public education system doesnt fully acknowledge
This is a hidden treasure for knowledge about African American history. Be prepared for graphic illustrations, and original artifacts from slave trade. There are also uplifting aspects where you can learn about what has been achieved through adversity.
This place is powerful. It informed me about people that I have never heard of that fought for our freedom and killed on our behalf. I also learned important facts about history that I was never taught. But if you are reading this, they are in need of donations for a new facility. I believe you can just go on the website to donate. The facility needs work to make it a more modernized and fresh environment. Definitely go visit.
For as many years as this museum has been established, I have only just visited. It was very informative and was much larger than I expected. I am excited about their expansion .
Came here for a school trip and it was a wonderful experience. While not a super large place, it is filled with so much history for all ages. We did hold back some of our younger students from going downstairs since the displays were more graphic in nature ( although history at some point they need to learn and understand). I know I walked away learning something new and feel that it is a place for everyone to visit at least once.
Great place love the exhibits and hopefully itll get bigger
Awesome very informative. I really appreciate what my people endured for us.
Theres a lot to see and feel here. It needs some serious updating though as its pretty tight in there.
It was a great museum. It is very depressing to see what history has done to the African American community. However this teaches us to keep striving to make progress in all avenues. We do not have to be held down from our past but to learn from it to make us better for the future and at the same time never forget
Very small museum. Interesting and thought-provoking. Sparsely-run.
Wonderful time. So heart felt. I loved our guide. He was very good. TY everyone especially to the founders of the museum. This place is very personal. So much history in a small place. WOW.
My family and I came here to share the experience with my daughter of how her ancestors coped with life and what we had to endure. Some of the exhibits are falling apart and they desperately need to be maintained. Outside of that, we still enjoyed our time there and its just as I remember when I was in school 20+ years ago.
There is so much history in this museum right in the heart of the city. Im born & raised here in Baltimore and this was my 1st time visiting, I will surely be returning with my children! Great exhibits.
Informative but ghetto Im not to be played with like that
Its located in a part of Baltimore that may be less than desirable for some, but this museum is a must go to for those interested in the African Diaspora and the history of their descendants in America. Its truly a one of a kind place with some of the most disturbing images that Ive found on the subject. The museum is small (we were able to get through it in 2-3 hours) and can use a bit of updating as some of the exhibits are showing wear & tear. They do not have an eating or dining area & the gift shop was closed on the day we visited. The only bathrooms are located at the exit/entrance & they look like elementary school restrooms, but they were clean. Overall, a great day trip! Ill never miss a chance to enjoy this museum & hope that they can remain open & continue expanding their exhibits.
I love this museum. Its a great place to go. It would be even better if there were restaurants and/or other attractions close by to see and do. It would be nice to keep people in the area and make it an all day thing. Its kinda poor city planning as with a lot of other attractions in Baltimore. If there was more around to do and see there would definitely be way more traffic to the museum. Also... Prices could/ would hopefully be lower for entry.
There are few places that cover the expansive history of Black diaspora, let alone in wax! This place is perfect for school trips, but some areas may not be appropriate for those under 15 years of age.
I just love this museum and the founder Dr. J. Martin. Ive visited this place several times throughout the years learning something new every time concerning our history.
Still looks the same. Were all should be donating to keep this going. I was here over 20 years ago and it was important the children saw it also. Great experience.... I wont share all the photos... you need to see it physically! Its a must
Very interesting place. I felt a connection to this museum years before i even decide to visit.
It was really intresting for me i loved it
Its a wonderful experience took my son .
Wax museum is a wonderful place to learn history. Located in Baltimore city. It is a hidden treasure. Full of wax depictions from history current. It is inexpensive. Worth the time to learn, to listen and become a part of your history. Recommended for educational purposes
What a great educational tool to learn about Black history from the beginning of time through the slave trade and the civil rights era to the very present. There is scope for improvements and maintenance so lets hope benefactors will step forward to help out.
Very impactful experience; worthwhile!
Great to visit if you dont know your history, but does need work
This is a place that EVERYONE needs to visit. I consider myself well read and knowledgeable. I learned a lot at this museum. So glad I went there!! Do yourself a favor and go !
The place is beautiful I just feel like for certain wax figures they rushed on it like for instance the Dr King Jr statue. But the people were absolutely rude when we entered the building if you don’t like working you job don’t work there simple as that but don’t take it out on paying guests
Always a special place to go learned good history parking is so-so. ?
Its a great place to go but they really need people to go and to contribute the the continuation of our history being told.
A very informative museum on the greatness of black people from the motherland of Africa onto our bloody, many time deadly journey to the Americas. The many major contributions we continually sow in the USA. The full truth, good and bad is told here. Thank you for educating us!
The last time I was there my son was in the 6th grade, his teacher took them there because they were to be the last 6th graders in the school....the school was going back to 5th as the last grade. A few parents went and we had at least five six grade classes...which you know is quite a large sum of children! Anyway, the children was pretty amazed at what they were seeing and very interested...we all ENJOYED ourselves it was awesome!!! My son is now 32 yrs old, so its been quite a while, Ive been talking about this museum ever since...I do plan to return God willing, am very glad to know it still stands!!!! EVERY BLACK PERSON ON THE PLANET NEEDS TO VISIT!!!
Very strong place to go if your African American and wanna learn about your race and the struggles weve been through and must go. Reasonable tickets for a life time of knowledge and understanding.
The National Great Blacks In Wax Museum is a great experience. It is very informative in depicting black history and culture. I would have gave it five stars if it wasnt for the building and some of the information needed to be updated. Other than that a great experience.
Eye opening experience for all!! A must visit in your lifetime!! I took my kids and they too were surprised at the level of knowledge and details the museum had to offer.
People need to pour donations into this establishment to help preserve it. Its filled with Rich history I enjoyed with the kids. Quick alternative to the African American museum
My family and I really appreciate the experience we encountered at this here museum. We got a chance to see firsthand what our ancestors went through. Mr. Eric Cherry staff member was also very helpful and kind.
Gave a look into our past and present of truly inspiring Asiatic American people.
It was a great visit that young man that we had as a tour guide was very knowledgeable and spoke with passion. I can only hope the rest of the staff are as passionate about it as he is. The lady that seemed to be in charge that day should work on her people skills.
It was so interesting very enlighting I learn alot
Overall this museum provided much more than I expected (in a good way). It’s not just wax figures but lots of little known history packed in to a small space. The wax figures definitely makes all of it come to life though. I will say this - probably not a good place for young children, because some of the history told here is very graphic and disturbing, and they don’t make an effort to sugarcoat anything for G-rated audiences.Anyway I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the dust / allergens upstairs was so bad I started coughing uncontrollably. So I left. Other than that, awesome experience - but also very sobering.
The tour guide really made this place his knowledge of the statuettes draw you in and beware for your children because he keeps Real!
Some wax figures were very inaccurate and the was exposed wiring as well as dysfunctional interactive displays. The gift shop was also closed and appeared to be torn apart. Other than that I was good.
This place is amazing! There were a couple figures and descriptions missing but nonetheless, the tour guide was knowledgeable and the museum itself has history! My dad took me here when I was little and I took my kids two weeks ago, the same figures are there and thats amazing to me! I do feel they need some funds to help preserve and update the museum.
I visited Baltimore recently and its always inspiring to take in a museum. The cost is very reasonable and there are quite a few exhibits to see. Lots of reading on small signs however which I think could be distracting for kids and difficult for the elderly or sight impaired. A few figures were damaged as well. I did learn a lot throughout my visit. They are advertising for contributions with the hope of expanding and refurbishing. With any luck I hope they are successful in their efforts. Its worth a visit for a great cause.
Great place to visit the experience is out of this world. Cant wait for the expansion. We need this!
It was very emotional for me especially being a black woman. I wouldnt suggest taking children here... But they must know how our past was shaped. Very informative and realistic
Very interesting place and full of history! It was very informative. The atmosphere is very welcoming. It was great! Visiting here is such a heart wrenching experience.Excellent family place and live with friends.
I went here when I was 9 years old, and it was a great experience! Probably the best museum Ive ever been to!
I enjoy learning american historyThe museum was a great experience.
This place is awesome. Very educational, informational, and evocative. Every black person in America ought to visit this place, and anybody interested in genuine history ought to visit too. It showcases the two sides of black history in America...the sad and the triumphant. It celebrates the achievements of many black people and even has some wax figures dedicated to Africas exceptional leaders. Those wax figures are real enough that youd think they were real people at every turn. The museum also covers Americas unfortunate histories -lynching and Slavery. You think you know a thing or two about the History of slavery and yet a visit to the slaveship leaves one stunned! As for the lynching section, I just didnt have the stomach for it but I still visited. I was glad to see parents and their kids walk through the museum, and listened curiously to the kids questions about the historical characters that they encountered. Know thyself is well said.
Visited this museum today and it was very informative. There are three levels of information and exhibits displayed. Mahalia Jackson, Booker T Washington, Barrack Obama, Mary Bethune, Jesse Owens, Ancient Egyptians, slave displays, white abolonist, FUBU and Exxon founders, etc. There is a lot and its worth a visit. The museum could definitely use a renovation. The smell of dust and anything ancient lingers around. Some exhibits didnt have lights on them so people passed by without knowing they were there. Parking is free and admission was $15 per adult.
A trip every person should go to. Black history is American history
It pulls a variety of aspects of the African American experience under the light of words and three dimensional representations in a self determined museum experience environment. A good stop for people who can understand and read US English. The museum relies on donations and is not OVERLY commercial. For this reason it is a bit rustic....no high dollar Disney or Smithsonian experience, but a must see for those unexposed to the sad details of slavery, or as a way to introduce your kids to the topic. I recommend parents be prepared to witness the shameful past, and also guide the kids to see the positivity in the message.
This was the reality awakening I needed, reading about our history is one thing and seeing it was a whole new experience for my lifes growth.
I loved this place. Everyone should go. Its a game changer.
I loved it. Wish they had a guide, an open gift shop and they need some remodeling.
The museum itself needs work as its outside appearance doesnt do the history within its walls any justice. It is however a place all African Americans should come to visit, the young and the old. Truly people from all walks of life should make it a point to visit this museum. The history and the message that lives within these walls are profound. There is one exhibit that says....Now we lynch ourselves! Introduced by a sign that says..Blvd of Broken Dreams. This speaks volumes!!! Black lives do matter!! So if this is as true as the words itself, we need to love one another and stop killing ourselves and each other. This exhibit is powerful and worth seeing! The tribute to President Barack Obama is beautiful. This museum holds alot of great knowledge about our history. Inventions by black people that you may not even have about. Its worth a visit!
This trip is well worth it the information you gain and the people you see and learn about really helps us remember who we are and we bigger then whats going on
They should be ashamed of how they present us to the world! Customer service? You dont greet your guests with your bed scarf tied around your head. So dusty that i couldnt finish the tour. Set my allergies in a fit! You need to do better! Figures were amazing... just disty!
So good! People should make donations to help them upgrade and do some needed maintenance. They have done an amazing job!
Excellent!! Everyone should visit and please make a donation as the work here is exceptional! It would be great if they would expand.
The experience was very informative and the wax figure look so real its creepy
What a wonderful museum!! I was educated, enlightened, horrified, and proud of all the many exhibits that showed our pain, struggle, as well as our astounding major acomplishments. This is a must visit for all african americans, and all who wish to learn about the true african american experience. Bravo!
Mid-sized museum featuring many displays, including many wax figures of Blacks who have made significant contributions to Americas history. Also includes scenes depicting those enslaved during the voyage to America, and on plantations. Of significant interest to those interested in Black history.
More persons definitely should visit to support this institution. I havent been since a school trip and I got more out of it as an adult. I loved the exhibit documenting the histories of Egypt and Ethiopia. The museum does have its campy moments but I do find it to be a more nuanced and honest telling of the African diaspora than the Slavery+Martin Luther King=Obama narrative.
Its a great place to learn about black history its been a long time since Ive been in black historymuseum
