This museum is different from the typical museums. It’s filled with modern art work and many mixed media pieces. Their gift shop is pretty affordable with a lot of cool trinkets and souvenirs to purchase. I honestly wasn’t so impressed by this museum and found myself kind of bored. The best thing about this museum was the gift shop. The gift shop had things for a dollar.
Really nice museum, definitely worth the trip if youd like to see some interesting art. The museum store was unique and definitely worth visiting. Its also worth stopping by Federal Hill for some nice views of the city.
This is a funky museum that might not be for everyone but is fun. Some of the items are beautiful or thought provoking and others just dont make sense. The photos are from a couple of exhibits. The first few were made with food items, grains, crackers, etc. They second one, a gentleman carved (ostrich?) eggs into beautiful design. There was a back story to it that I cant remember now but I believe the guy, at least at the start was in prison.
Amazing, full of colorful interesting creations by extremely talented artists. This place is packed with all different kinds of modern and unique art like no other. You could spend hours reading about each piece or just take in the beauty. My favorite part was the large pieces like the sculpture of Divine.
A very fun and relatable art museum. No stuffy boring exhibits here. The art grabs you and sucks you right in. The art is in 2 buildings - 3 floors in one, 2 floors the other, both have either stairs or elevators. Very modern & well kept up, very clean. The art ranges from sculpture and embroidery to oil. It is located about a block south of the south end of the inner harbor. It costs $15 for an adult. Also, the gift shop is especially nice for kids since they have lots of fun stuff priced at 25 cents. One mom, while I was there, gave her 5 year old a budget of 1 dollar. The gears in that kids brain were really spinning as he poured over the selections that would net him the best mix of stuff!
My 5 year old was OMGing this place before we even entered the building. Most interesting museum Ive ever been to.make sure to check out the gift shop.
I absolutely love this place and dont see how people live in this city and dont support the local culture.i can post all the pictures possible but it wont amont to the same experience. My children (14 & 4) came here one Saturday afternoon and have to come back. Everyone is so friendly and knowledgeable which definitely helped in the experience. We had personal take aways from the museum. My preschooler loved the interactive exhibits and my teen was into the environmental parts. I loved inspirational sections.
An absolute must see if you like quirky and thought provoking art work. This place brings the creativity and imagination of a kid and has artifacts that both kids and adults will enjoy. Extremely easy to get yourself lost in all the whimsical pieces. The admission prices are extremely reasonable and dont forget to check out the buildings nearby which house more art work.
I love this museum. Such amazing works of art. I had no idea they were having an Alex Grey exhibit. Hes one of my favorite painters and it was amazing to see his full size work in person. If you go, be sure to check out the Lusitania made from almost 11,000 toothpicks and the fart exhibit downstairs
My visit today was for the Celebration of Life for our long family friend, Orhan Baykal. It was a very beautiful service, in a lovely setting. I know in my heart Mr. Baykal would be please.
Dont let the 90s website fool you, this place is really fun. They offer short guided tours that show a quick glimpse into all the history present in the modern pieces. Surprised by all of the glass sculptures and the gift shop is worth spending 30 minutes in by itself! Lots of cool trinkets that are reasonably priced.
A beautiful museum and collection of eclectic works. This is our Baltimore just as much as the not so savory realities. So much beauty and creativity, one can’t help but admire it all.
I enjoyed this place immensely. There is much more to see here than you might think. The art is interesting, often thought provoking, sometimes beautiful, and always well displayed. The layout and feel of the place were very well done. Allowed you to wander in and out of places and while there were a lot of people there you never felt crowded. I will definitely be back next time I am in Baltimore.
Coolest museum Ive ever been! Its not your regular art museum! They have colourful paintings and they have embroidery art, they have lots of sculpture, 3 dimensional art made from all sorts of materials! I love the stories behind all artwork here! Really vulnerable stuff. They have the coolest stuff in the store as well. I really love this museum.
Love this places with the current artist. I love out of the box ideas and unique creations. Some are not my taste but the paintings are so amazing and lots of the sculptures are really amazing. They also appreciate Military service and give discounts. Thank you for that but at the moment they only give free admission to active duty which is really insulting to those of us that are Combat Veterans. Just because we are retired doesnt mean to just spit us out now that we are not active anymore we are survivors so please dont forget us especially when some active Soldiers havent even seen Combat. Please remember the Veterans also they are worth the free if fees also.
This place is very visually striking. When I came here, I actually missed the cut off time for the last entrance. So I just ended up walking around the area and still had a great time. There are several things to see outside of the museum itself and the exterior definitely is a piece of art in itself. Will make sure that I come back here again so I can come back inside next time.
This was the highlight to my trip to Baltimore. This holds some of the finest examples of modern off-beat artworks that fill your soul with joy. Three levels of paintings, carvings, statues and curios that come from fresh perspectives and beautiful minds. Some might call it weird or quirky - I call it heaven sent. The gift shop is just as glorious - packed full of goodies, including original art; and the upstairs restaurant / Café is a great place to refuel - full of art and friendly service! Loved this place so much!!
A very different and fun museum. Kids will LOVE it. The museum shop is almost as much fun as the museum itself.
This is one of those Must See museums. Not everything here will relate to children. However kids will enjoy it just as well. The gift store is phenomenal!
Definately check out the gift shop. Its like a separate museum of its own. There was a lot of cool stuff in there. Sixteen bucks is kinda steep given the number of free museums of a higher caliber nearby. We went near closing time where the entrance fee is donation based. I would recommend doing that.
The American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore had a variety of collections with interesting pieces. There was an altering mirror that was nice to take funny pictures, they have a great view on the top floor (don’t take pictures with flash!!) The gift shop had to be my favorite spot with interesting items like funky sunglasses and coasters that said explicitly funny things.
The visionary art museum was great! The art was intriguing and fun, and the museum was totally welcoming of children. It cost me ten dollars for me to get in as a student in a group and it was totally worth it. Its the kind of place I want to go back to visit soon.
Eclectic at museum with pieces by self taught artists and those with mental illnesses. The stories behind the exhibits are as compelling as the art. The store is filled with novelty and kitsch, worth multiple laughs. The building itself is a marvel, Alex Castro (the designer/architect) created a masterpiece.
Beautiful place. Very creative. I love the little biographies of the authors right besides their art pieces and even some pieces have an excerpt of how the author conceived that specific piece.A place with something for everyone to admire.Didnt had time to try the restaurant but looks awesome. The shop has so many interesting gadgets, its hard to leave empty handed.I will definitely come back with friends and family.
Didn’t get a chance to go inside although I really wish I had. All around the museum you could find really cool art installations. I would definitely recommend going to go check it out if your an art lover.
One of the best museums along the East coast. The AVAM staff is incredibly friendly, helpful and organized and the museum itself is unlike anything you’ve seen. Such fun! They host the annual Kinetic Sculpture Race and it’s one of the BEST activities to spectate if you want a day long exploration of the area. The race goes all over Baltimore and includes sand, mud, and water obstacles. At the end there multiple awards based on the “best bribe” and “best pit crew”—not just who won first in the race. AND THE MUSEUM SHOP! It has the most eclectic offerings from $1 toys and hand made jewelry to artwork from AVAM artists to things you never knew you needed in your life. If you visit Baltimore stop here, or even if you’re interested in a weekend day trip it’s worth it!
This place is kind of off the wall (visit the magic flatulence post), weird, unpretentious and totally fascinating. Even though its outsider art, the artists are very clearly very skilled and oftentimes tell really interesting stories with their work. I really enjoyed the parenthood exhibit and will be sure to return.
Its neat walking around the museum and looking at all the sculptures outside!
Fun for kids, about an hour or twos worth of stuff for them to see. We really liked the gift shop. Lots of handmade and vintage items.
Had a lovely time! I went for a school project to see the Painted Screens of Baltimore. The staff was friendly and helpful in pointing me in the right direction, since the screens were in a different building than I thought. Had a good mix of art that was fun, and art that was heavy and poignant.
I absolutely loved this place, the art was quirky fun colorful and just so interesting, I wish I had aWhole day to go through each of them with depth, but I spent about 3hrs and it was just enough, they have parenthood exhibition going on right now, pretty cool a very different perspective on art, the restaurant upstairs is closed, ever the restrooms were full of cool art pieces loved it, the store had some stuff to but i spent almost half an hour just going through the quirky store, a must go museum!!! Great for kids, young adults and adults
Interesting art museum where none of the artists have been classically trained. There are 3 buildings but one is used only for events. The main building has 3 floors of exhibits and is handicap accessible. Theres a sculpture garden outside the main building. The 3rd building has a few exhibits but the main building in my opinion is the best. There is also a gift shop in the main building with unique gifts, books, cards, etc. We spent about 2 hours but did not read every detail on the displays. If you live in Baltimore and really enjoy going or bringing guests it may be more cost effective to buy a membership. It was $60 for 4 adults or $100 for a year membership for 4 adults.
This museum is unlike any other in the world. The fine to enter is ~$20 if I remember correctly, but the exhibits and building itself are spectacles made of very atypical media. I would also recommend checking out the neighborhood since there are many other unusual art pieces
This is a museum of Visionary Art, defined as work created by self taught individuals whose work arises from an inate personal vision that revels in the creative act itself. The works you will see may be much less technical than a traditional art museum, but they still make a deeply emotional connection. The museum is very well curated, telling the stories of the artists and their vision. A delightful place to spend a few hours.
This was a very nice museum with different art and a different perspective on what is considered art. I really enjoyed the 3D exhibit and the beaded dresses and sculptures. If you love art you need to visit.
So powerful! Exhibit on parenting was an emotional roller coaster. I laughed at times, winced at others, and was moved entirely by the thoughtful creativity assembled herein. Well worth the trip!
Art that I actually like. Its also relatively cheap
This was such an amazing place. I am a little embarrassed we never visited before this trip. A totally unique experience. Wikipedia has it right when they speak of lart brut. The art in this museum is, raw and visceral. Sometimes moving. Sometimes disturbing. It is both hard to look at and hard to look away. It does draw you in and I found myself more carefully studying each piece, each square inch of the art on display. It also speaks to the immense untapped talent in the world. I cant wait to go back.
Love this museum!Always eye catching.Every level has eye popping art.Clean cool bathroom. There’s a cafe upstairs, very beautiful! (Never eaten there)Right by federal hill.If you’re a Bank of America card holder, you can get in free every 1st weekend of the month!!!!!! But you have to mention it in order to get the deal! They won’t mention it for you!
Colorful, fun and interesting. Really enjoyed my visit. The shop is quirky and full of different things.
Great venue. Great staff. #zeffertandgold #avambaltimore
The American Visionary Art Museum is a great little museum. When I visited there was an extremely moving exhibit of embroidery by a Holocaust survivor and an interesting and informative exhibit about climate change and environmental degradation. There is a good blend of the visionary/psychedelic, the visionary/scientific, and the visionary/cautionary. Beautiful and enlightening!
I really enjoyed this place. The artwork was unique. The best part is that you can read about the artist and how some of the artwork was developed.
A truly unique and interesting museum, not like any other. Paid parking meter and lots of nearby construction but otherwise easy to find.
Amazing curation of Intuitive Art. The permanent exhibits are mesmerizing. Mystery Exhibit quite thought provoking. Whimsy abounds, especially in the Sculpture Garden. Many many moments of great beauty, mixed with healthy doses of laughter & even a few tears. The perfect Art experience, in my opinion. You should treat yourself, I believe...
Amazing place! So many interesting pieces to see. Theyre all over the buildings. Exhibits change. Youve to look up and outside as well!
You’ll see something here that will make you feel something. Part of the museum is open to the public for free. In an abandoned warehouse in Baltimore, there is a giant balloon dragon made by a blind artist. You walk in, alone. There is no one there to greet you. How many people have stood alone with that giant, poppable beast, and regarded its beauty, and let it be?
Quite different ftom most Art Museums...thoughtful, whimsical but wish it was bigger, too short a visit.
Cant think of how to describe this unusual small museum and its equally unusual gift shop, but its well worth a visit, and Ive included a couple of pics. Note that there are exhibits in more than the main building and that there are some items that will appeal to kids.
Over all this is a really great museum. The collection spans three buildings and has a great range of pieces. The mechanical pieces were a favorite of my group and we definitely doesn’t a fair amount of time there. There is pay street parking right out back of the museum, but we were able to find free street parking on the other side of Federal Hill Park - which is also worth a visit for the view of the city.
Nice view from this hill on the city Museum was closed unfortunately on Monday, keep in mind.
Its a fantastic, unique art Museum. On display is art that is free of limits or restrictions. We got there kinda late and had to rush through before closing time. There was another building we didnt even get to see. I will go back as soon as I get the chance.
I go there almost every time when in Baltimore even if I dont visit inside - the outside is quite entertaining and sometimes it could be even more interesting. Exhibitions are a mix of kitschy and tasteful art. Worth visiting at least once!
Quirky and fun exhibits that capture the uniqueness of Baltimore. I felt the price was right at $10 (student price). A lot of the artists displayed are local as well, which is great.
Beautiful art museum in Baltimore. A very distinctive sculptures and a beautiful facade.
Amazing place! I could have spent all day there. If I ever go back to Baltimore, Im totally going back. I highly recommend the restaurant if you have the time.
Very cool primative folk visionary collection, small intimate museum, not far from inner harbor
Lots of different art styles and mediums. Kid friendly, inspires imaginationAwesome gift shop with tons of inexpensive trinkets.
If you like your art unique and quirky - then the American Visionary Art Museum is for you. Loved the collection when I was visiting Baltimore.
This place is so fun. Its not a huge museum, you wont feel like you have to rush to see everything. There is a lot of easy parking near by. Good date place, right next to the inner harbor.
Fun and interesting place! So much to look at! Ample metered parking behind the building.
We were looking for something to do near Inner Harbor. The water taxis werent running, so the walk to Fort McHenry was too long. We decided on the American Visionary Art Museum, and were very pleased with that decision! My favorite part was the moving wooden sculptures in the 3rd (furthest south) building. So brilliant!
One of the most interesting and unique museums I have ever been to. I only wish I still lived in Baltimore so that I could go more frequently and participate in their events.
Great museum... A hidden treasure and a must see.
I wasnt impressed with the art outside but as you being to explore the art inside and really taken your time, it is truly amazing! The Holocaust art was the most touching part!!
American Visionary Art museums captures the creative and entertaining spirit of the American dream created by true American Artist. It holds a rich youthful and colorful heritage.
Very stimulating and interesting. Tactile exhibits that make you think and feel about many aspects of life.
Really quirky but interesting. Great opportunities for pictures. Three buildings to go through and a sculpture garden, but the second building looked like a dance floor when we were there.Definitely go downstairs to the bathrooms for the fart post.
One of the best visual art museums Ive ever been too! Amazing experience for the whole family!
This was different. It wasnt your normal art museum. The collections seemed eclectic and some of the paintings seemed like a 6 year old drew them. We walked around for an hour and then left. Some of it was cool, but most wasnt our style.
I love this museum! Theres so much unique art in here that you cant find anywhere else. I love how approachable it is and that it doesnt take itself too seriously. Go here!
We went here for my birthday and I could be more happy with the decision. There are a lot of curios and the collection is always changing. I had a great time
I absolutely love this museum. Its the most lively, colorful, interesting place and I could spend hours upon hours roaming this property. Also went for a special craft market and found some excellent gifts. Parking is limited so keep that in mind when you plan your visit!
Great little museum. Unique. Not overwhelming. Definitely worth your time.
One my favorite museums as an artist- it is multidisciplinary and dimensional, with the various display spaces, and entertaining rotating permanent collection. The outsider artist events are top notch! I loved participating in the art car parades and the Bazzart Holiday Show.
One of my favorite museums in Baltimore. The exhibits are always thought provoking and beautiful. It seems they rotate exhibits on a regular basis which makes it a perfect museum to go to a few times a year. The gift shop is wonderful but I do wish they had a book curating the exhibits. They have a wide selection of books- but I would have loved to take part of the museum exhibit home with me.
Probably one of the most unique museums you will ever visit. I always love coming here!
Loved this place. It has such unique exhibits that and art that is so inspiring. Fun for the kids too.
AMAZING! I could have spent all day in this museum and STILL wanted to come back again. The displays are so thought provoking and well put together. Well be back again soon!
A must-see, one of a kind, interesting place of art. Clean bathrooms and amazing views from top floor.
One of my favorite places in Baltimore to visit! Beautiful art. Tasty food. Snazzy events.
Had a great time exploring all that the museum had to offer... which is a lot! Everything was beautiful and unique.
My favorite museum of all time.
I had a really good time here. It was not at all crowded on a Friday afternoon. We spend a good two hours wandering through the galleries before making our way to the store. The store was almost like another gallery. It was full of interesting items and the staff was very friendly.
Awesome museum! I loved one of the other building with all the kinetic sculptures.
Has military discount. Interesting exhibits and worth the trip! Paid street parking outside at $2/hr
Beautiful museam with unique and unusual art . Great book store, could spend hours. New restaurant coming by owners of Almas. Cant wait to try!
Unique amazing experience.
Very neat contemporary art museum - kinetic sculpture race is a must!
Only the worlds most amazing Outsider art museum. Where to begin? The design of the main building is all curvlinear with no hard angles- any where. The permanent exhibit is worth revisiting yearly if not more. The occasional exhibits are constructed around a theme and the art is always mind-blowing in its originality. This is a one of a kind museum. I have been to only one other Outsider art museum- The Art Brut Museum - and AVAM feels even more magical. That might be the most apt description of this museum- pure magic.
Inspiring And unique. High quality of expression and motivation.
Loved it! Im not especially artsy but had a great time. There is a pretty awesome exhibit there right now on second floor
Used a groupon, but even without it is not badly priced. The most interesting art museum I have been to. Since the art is made by :everyday people You can feel more of a connection with many of the pieces. Very colorful. What ever you do, do not miss he gift shop, It had really cool stuff in it. Also dont miss the outdoor sculptures, the barn, and the other building with the interactive displays and whirly-gigs. I think many people didnt realize those places are part of the museum too. This was our first time going, We plan to go back again to check out the annual rotating exhibits.
Always an amazing time, staff is very friendly and helpful. Gift shop is amazing
This is a hidden gem in Baltimore. Really really interesting. Dont miss this place.
Fun for both my very knowledgeable graphic designer sister and my very unartistic self. Learn history, see beauty, and experience new perspectives, different points of view, and relevant new statement exhibits.
A unique museum with an artistic perspective. Entrance may be gained through membership ( at a significant cost-benefit if you go more than once a year) or you can pay per visit (search AVAM online for current rates). Some exhibits are permanent; others have more limited showing ( 6 - 12 months) but all are fascinating. Plan to spend a few hours on your visit and make sure you visit all the buildings.
This is my absolute favorite museum in Baltimore. Everything about it is phenomenal even down to the gift shop. I couldnt recommend it enough.
