Great place for birding and observing riparian areas and the Colorado River in a wilder state. Keep in mind this is a preserve. A preserve is land set aside because it provides essential endangered species habitat, has a unique natural feature or shows an example of a specific type of ecosystem. Unlike parks, preserves are kept in a wild state with little to no infrastructure such as bathrooms or trash cans and trails, if any, are rustic. Because this is a wildlife preserve, dogs are not allowed here, even on lease. Use leave no trace practices here and, as noted by other posters, if you bring a trash bag to fill the Parks and Wildlife Department will be grateful for the help. Due to the unique bends and twists of the river, lots of trash that runs off into the river gets deposited here.
There are a couple great, secluded beaches on the river here. I feel like thats a secret Im not supposed to share, but the thing is, theyre not large and theyre not all that easy to access so Im not worried about them becoming too popular. You have to trek in on a dirt path after parking under the freeway. Finding your way to the river, its easy to end up in deep mud, and theres poison ivy *everywhere* so wear closed-toed shoes and pants.
This is just a short trail but it is secluded which is nice, especially if you want your dogs off leash without disturbing anyone. Only a couple of small access spots to the water.Unfortunately the people that come here dont pick up after themselves and leave trash everywhere. Also, due to the construction they blocked off a big stretch at the side of the road that is normally being used for parking. Now there is only enough space for 5-6 cars
This is a beautiful spot along the river to take a walk through woods, take a cool dip in the river, and have a little picnic. Essentials to bring: (1) Bring a trash bag to pack out your own trash and do a good deed by taking some of whats there with you. (2) If you drink, bring cans or plastic- not glass. Watch out of broken glass bottles. And, (3) most importantly, bring a big smile and good attitude to enjoy the water, wildlife, and greenery.
Good place
This place could be amazing - if the city actually maintained it. Trash everywhere possibly left by the homeless - and also illegal dumping. It is nice and solitary. If you head there, Id vote you bring a trash bag and help haul out some of the litter. I wish I had.
Theres a bunch of trash and poison ivy, but if youre careful (and pick up after yourself) it can be a good time. Amazing bird life if you get to looking. Look out for water moccasins, too! It is a wildlife sanctuary, after all. Please pick up after yourself if you visit and leave the glass at home, dagnabbit.
Cool, rustic place. Stick with the main trail to traverse the sanctuary, the trail shown on Google maps that looks like a short cut is not a developed or maintained trail. It is overgrown in places and has a lot of poison ivy along it.
Very good spot for riparian birding, hampered somewhat by relative lack of access due to ongoing construction and the occasional presence of homeless. Trails rather spartan but clean, and some areas further back are hard to access now due to flooding, but maintenance issues seem to be resolved.
Really nice location that could be a lot better if it were only cleaned up and have the riff raff hanging around there run off.
Abundance of homeless camps and trash make this an uneasy place to explore.
There was a lot of trash and beer cans near the entrance, and illegal dumping with a discarded mattress. I encountered a sketchy homeless guy with gang tatooes near the river and got the heck out of there. This could be a nice place if it was cleaned up. It is a little better on the opposite side of the river, which has less trash, and no sketchy homeless that I saw. Cross the Montopolis bridge to the south and take the first right after the bridge onto an asphalt bike trail, then take a right onto the first abandoned asphalt trail at the bottom of the hill.
Really hard to find access point. Lots of traffic noise. Lots of garbage and litter at the entrance, but it gets quieter and cleaner as you get deeper in. Wonderful trails and very natural, a gem in the heart of Austin.
Agree that it could be super beautiful if it were maintained. Super hidden. Off the beaten path (literally and figuratively)
Perfect if you love the outdoors and dont mind hiking the trail the trails lead All Over Town Lake or as knowin Lady Bird Lake
I dont know how I ended up over here on my bike, but I did and I have to tell you, its gorgeous. Check out the banks of the river, which are teeming with lush vegetation and the Airport Blvd bridge for an excellent sunset view of Austin!
Good camping
No road access? No building?
Gla I ended up there by surprise. Very beautiful scenery.
Nice and peaceful
Cool place
They are dumping Literal tons of concrete slurry (from the highway construction) 20 feet from the river *look out wildlife; not much of a sanctuary down stream*
Uhh Idk.
Awesome
Natural
Dirty
Very nice and peaceful.
A well hidden gem, time well spent on the way to the airport.
Nothing to do and nobody here
