I am a descendant of Major Jonathan Bird. I am also a Black man with Indian blood. I can not read about Major Bird without asking how he would have reacted, had he future knowledge that the same of those he was lead to kill, would also become an branch of his genetic legacy. To each man is given a mortal choice. Whether to move to that side which corrupts the soul or to take residence with the principles which gave to the birth of our saviour Christ Jesus. Your choice, now and for your coming future. -Fred L. Durdin III. (Franklin/Lewis/Bird)

Honestly? This might be the strangest place Ill ever review. Its a closed trail at the moment, with promise from the Veridian developers that one day there will be a museum or cultural center here. For now, there are signs at the old trailhead that warn of H2S - Hydrogen Sulfide which is a byproduct of drilling for natural gas. Lovely. But you see, Im not so easily deterred. We skirted around the old drilling field and went through the marsh that wraps around the lake. This side of the trail is absolutely gorgeous, quiet, and brimming with wildlife. Bring your boots and get ready for mud!

If youre familiar with your Texas History, you might remember Birds Fort is where Sam Houston supposedly met with native tribes to broker a peace treaty in 1841 (or maybe the ft was built in 1841? Im a little sketchy on the details.)But the site is down on the Trinity river-bottoms next to the why cant I get flood insurance housing development (aka Ceridian.) Or at least someone left a Google maps marker here.Theres pretty much nothing left. We found a few posts that couldnt possibly be original and a cement foundation and cinderblock structures that also had to be build in the 1900s. But maybe they were built on the correct site.It looks like the construction company removed the historical marker, cause why not? With the exception of a few buildings in Ft. Worth, we seem to be in an awful hurry to tear down anything vaguely old.But I thought it was a fun trip. I got to get out of the car and trapse around a field where theyre about to build some gawddaffle houses in the middle of a flood plane. Go see it before its someones back yard.
