This local mountain is a wonderful place to see a beautiful view of Anchorage on nice days. I try to hike up here at least once a year. I consider it a beginner-level hiking trail, but it does get a little trickier toward the top and coming down from that can be hard if youre brand new to hiking.Theres also Blueberry Loop for those who may not want a hike and just a short 10-minute walk to see the views from next to the parking lot.I absolutely love this place, always kept pretty clean and a great place for visitors.
Always a great hike. Not too difficult, but will make you work. Remember to take rest breaks, bring water and a small snack and youll enjoy it. Amazing views. A bit Rocky near the top, just go to the saddle if that scares you. Every step is worth it. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and youll get there. Plan 1.5 to 4 hours.
You cannot beat this beauty... Rain or shine this is a wonderful place to go for a hike or to get away from the city, but to still be able to oversee it... Has multiple trail systems, with different terrain types. Its best to always travel as a group, but still fine to travel alone, if you take the proper safety precautions, there are bears and other types of wildlife that call this area home, so its good to always be mindful of this! There could not be enough words to describe how great it is to be up here, so you be your own judge and enjoy the outdoors.
I loved this place because its beautiful! Could see all of Anchorage at the top! I recommend seeing this place!
This place has many options for hikers. When going to Alaska I was looking for a more dificult trail for a beginner. We ended up taking a path to the first mountain. Towards the end of the path, things began to be a bit more difficult. After the first mountain we continued to the next mountain ( I believe was flat top) adjacent to the one we just climbed. That mountain was exactly what I was looking for and wanted to do in Alaska. The trail was definitely more dificult for a beginner and involved a bit of free climbing. Also the views were amazing!
Its a frickin hike, whats not to love. It feels amazing not hearing cars. Me and a couple of friends tried to walk to the hidden lake but gave up when we were close. It was still extremely fun
Take a decent hike and enjoy the sunshine! Great place to see the city, even great for kids! This is somewhere is definitely visit again and recommend to others. Its really a place the whole family can enjoy! Its really great seeing all the people hiking too!!
They have done lots of work up here. Looking great. Far from the worst parking lot in town and not even restricting it to trailheads.Remember to drive slow and dont park on the dirt road.
An amazing park with an amazing view. The park police are beyond friendly and they park itself is very clean!
Stunning views great place to visit for tourist on a budget. Parking can be sketchy.
Wonderful hike, not too challenging. Great vuews!
Great hike! Awesome views. $5 per vehicle per day. I saw a bull moose too.
Awesome place to visit anytime but especially at sunset. Great hiking and great for photos. Ive been there at midnight in the summer and have beautiful shots of Anchorage at sunset. Also last Fall with spectacular foliage shots. Sometimes there are hanggliders jumping off the peak and gliding down to the fields below.
Hard hike to the top but beautiful views when you get there.
A pretty tough hike. It gets harder when you are about to reach the top, the rocks are slippery and getting down is much more tougher especially the first 10-15 minutes, it almost feels like rock climbing (not exactly). But the views from the top is worth hiking. Carry plenty of water and try to apply mosquito repellent, a lot of mosquitos.
Very icy, the steps need more attention.
Windy. Good drive. The walkways need maintenance. Enjoyed the cold trip up in January.
Love the views and no matter what season it is I’m still walking up to get a glimpse of Anchorage. Watch out though! There may be bears in the summer time.
What amazing place, we hiked here for hours. We hiked up the mountain and had a amazing view due to the excellent day we choose to do this hike on. We also hiked the Glen Alps trial in which we had the opportunity to watch several moose for a while.
There are trails close by and latrine facilities. Quick hike to multiple scenic overviews.
Very cool place, has a giant compass that labels mountains and volcanoes off in the distance. Can see everything from the bay to the mountain tops.
Cant wait to go again... Aurora hunting.
Tough hike for old knees. Great secenery all over.
Th is cloud and weather came in so I didnt get to go to the top but the view is still amazing
This was a super fun hike. There was a bear captured the day before. Great for a morning hike during the summer
A must see view if you visit Anchorage.
It was so beautiful there. Great place for pictures!
Road there is steep and narrow. Just be careful.
Good place for a view down side to many people are around.
Fun place for light mountain climbing or hiking!
This hike was fantastic and the views are spectacular!
Great afternoon trip for the family. A must-see for tourist and out of town guests. A great way for even those with limited mobility to get mountain views. After a beautiful drive up and $5 for parking, you can walk a short well paved path to a viewing area. The viewing area also has a ramp. Or if you are feeling more adventurous you can take off on one of the trails.
Fantastic hike!
Many of the trails here are fantastic and its so close to the city which makes it a go-to for anyone that doesnt want to plan a trip or leave town.
Enjoying this place every season.
Got within feet of a moose here, its a hell of a climb to the top. But there is parking just below the top and great views from there
Very beautiful. First time going on a trail in alaska. Certain routes are very pet, family, and bicycle friendly. Beautiful scenery!
Absolutely beautiful! Climbed to the top, such a breathtaking panoramic view, a must to visit.
Fall in love with this place. I wish i can stay longer and do the hike..
Used to be my favorite place to go after work. I went almost every day, once snow was gone a d before it snowed again. I loved observing the change of color from greens in Spring/Summer to red and orange in the Fall. I loved climbing on the side opposite of stairs, as it was always less crowded and you could hear a brook running below. Just an awesome setting to unwind and reflect.
What do Alaskans do when its over 70 degrees? Hike, of course! We made our way to Flattop Mountain. It is the most hiked mountain in our state at 3,245 feet within the Chugach State Park. From various points, you can see a panoramic view of Anchorage (AKs largest city), Denali (highest mountain peak in North America), and the beginning of the Aleutian Islands (a chain of 14 large volcanic islands and 55 smaller ones).Notes: Parking is $5 and you can with a cc.
Awesome place
Great views! Easy parking and easy to pay.
Most hiked place in anchorage Alaska, and it’s like 1 hour walk uphill from parking lots to flat top. Some part of way is steep and hard walk in winter or raining time coz it make walk way slippery & danger. Once u mange to get in top u can see USA flag and from there u can see while anchorage downtown.
Beautiful area.
Great views. Challenging in springtime when theres a combination of ice and slush going up to the top.
The view from this area is beautiful it’s a very lovely walk and in August full of berries!
This is the best view of the city. It is easy to walk around and offers options to walk, bike, or hike in numerous directions. Take the hike up Flattop mountain for an even more spectacular view!
Sufficient parking and easy to access the kiosk to pay for the day use. some of the lavatories were out of order, but there were two others in service that were your standard trailhead outhouses: vaguely gross couldve been a whole lot worse. signage is updated and easy to locate.
What a great view.
Beautiful view and a place to get away from the city. Note that this is an easy hike for fit folk but can be strenuous for those not used to the terrain in Alaska, particularly in the Chugach
Always busy in the summer. But theyve improved the parking. Will need more improvements in a few years.
The views were spectacular. Just did the viewpoint trail not the flattop trail.
So user friendly.
We loved everything about Alaska! The scenery is breathtaking beautiful
Only a 4 star because willawaw, near point, back side of flattop and many more are as good or Berger without the crowd. Check out the AllTrails app
This is a state park so theres a $5 day use fee. There is a very nice view of Anchorage from the overlook trail which is paved and accessable. There are a couple of trails that can be hiked from here. The most popular is Flattop Mtn a 3 mi round trip moderate to difficult trail. The trail is still snow covered in places as of 5/23.
Love the lower parking area for a bike ride jump off spot. Scenic check it out on a cloudy day up there
A great starting point for endless adventures.
One of the best local hikes with great views.
Small parking lot but many great hikes start here. Also a great place to take visiting relatives who arent so into hiking. The Anchorage overlook is short and fairly easy for anyone and has amazing views on a cloudy day, spectacular views of everything from here to Denali on a clear day.
Has amazing view and so.e better ones if your in the right spot which was great
Nice place to park and walk. Wish they had cheaper parking, but this state needs money since they barely tax anything. But go here for the views!
Amazing trail and views
Beautiful
Such a fun hike. Bring your dogs and children and see if they can make it to the top! I love it so much I have done it three times in the past month or so. Reached the summit in 36 minutes last time, but if youre not trying you can still get up there in under an hour, even if youre not all that fit. The view is well worth it. You can even see Denali on a clear day.
Flathead is the quickest most fun way to view this part of Alaska! Just go on a clear day and you can see all the way from prince William Sound ...to Denali! Great photo ops
If you wanna hike, go there!
I absolutely love these trails
An incredible view of the mountains, Anchorage, and the inlet.
Beautiful view. Challenging trail for a novice.
What more can you say but beautiful views.
Beautiful walk. Convenient parking.
Very Beautiful view of Anchorage from up there
Nice hike. Stunning views.
Its a parking lot with a vault toilet. It is a pretty easy home, so if it is tourist season expect there to be very little open parking.
Worth the drive if even to just stop to see the view. I want to come back to do the powerline trail
Flattop Mountain is a few minutes drive from Anchorage and is a great place to take visiting friends & family if you dont have an entire day to spend and you want a place where all ages & abilities can climb/hike a multitude of difficulty levels. If you make it to the top, the views of Anchorage are spectacular.
Still cold and a little bit of snow. But as always..the view was spectacular
Nice well keep trails and beautiful mountains.
Trails here are top notch, but they need more parking. on a nice summer day the parking lot can get completely full, including the overflow.
Very popular trail outside of Anchorage. Parking can be challenging so get there early. Easy hike up to the top. Along the alternate route you can see the old hiking trail that is no longer maintained. We saw moose around the road leading to the parking lot.
These photos are all from Chuhach National Park and Chuhach National Forest of which Glen Alps is a MAJOR Gateway. There are twenty years worth of Adventures that may be embarked upon from Flat Top Parking Lot and several others alont the Front Range of the Chugach.
Big parking lot at the entrances to trails on the Flattop Mountain. The parking lot is at high ground so that it has nice view of the ocean and snow mountains in a distance.
Good...
Really test your balance and endurance.
#Flattop/Glen Alps Is an Amazing Experience and Beautiful place Absolutely Loved our vacation there..
Best place to go hiking in Anchorage. Avoid the back-trail, never knew it existed. The Flattop Trails is the one to pick.
Beautiful Views. Worth the Hike.
A definite must-see for visitors and residents alike. Access to hiking trails up to Flattop mountain, and to the extensive network of hiking, biking and X-C ski trails in Chugach State Park. And the views from the overlook just to the north of the parking lot are spectacular- on a clear day, you can see Denali and the surrounding peaks in the Alaska range, the Mt. Spurr, Mt. Redoubt, and Mt Iliamna volcanoes, and the Talkeetna, Chugach and Kenai mountain ranges as well as the peaks in the Alaska range. You can see the entire Anchorage Bowl, Cook Inlet, and Turnagain and Knik Arms. Like I said, an absolute must-see.
$5 parking all day
