This park is located on the Yakima River near the city of Yakima. It is easy to find off I 82 and hwy 24. The campground is well managed with a staffed gatehouse and frequent patrols by park staff. The campground borders on a dike and wetlands. You will need bug spray at this park; particularly on the trails. There are both paved and dirt trials around ponds that provide habitat for birds and wildlife and trails along the dike. We saw lots of birds hiking the trails around the ponds. The Lily Pond in the picnic area is overgrown with brush. There is no beach and no swimming in this park. The playground is in good condition, close to the campground and there is lots of green grass. Lots of full-service spaces– both drive-through and back-in. Pull-thru spaces are very close together with barely room for an awning. The back-in spaces offer more room. None of the spaces offer much privacy. Lots of shade trees. Showers require tokens from machine near park office. The park map has a list of fines for violation of park rules ranging from $99 to $150 on the back.
Great place for a picnic. There are covered areas and open areas. Need a state park pass to enter.
Beautiful cute little park. Currently playscapes closed due to covid concerns, friendly ducks. Please dont feed the ducks bread...
The park is very peaceful and full of shade. The river passes right next to the park. The only problem is there is no basketball hoops for someone looking to play sports.
Beautiful park, a true oasis of wetland in the heart of Yakima.
Beautiful fall colors on 10/10.
The fishing was non existant :( but the park was well maintained and kept.
Nice, quaint tail system.
Discovery pass required or buy the day permit. Day use park, paid camping area, and nature trails. Day use park area is large. Multiple parking lots. Multiple shelters for rent or first come first serve. Few water spigots. Bathrooms. Horseshoe pits. Different kid playgrounds. Paved roads. Camping site area is further back and separated from the park. They have electricity, water, tables, and fire rings. Tent areas to large 5th wheel sites. The nature trails cover a large area and weave in and out with one another. They are for on foot or horseback only.
Small amount of people and lots of shade, makes for a good labor day weekend picnic experience.
I wasnt at Yakima Sportsman Park. I havent been here for a while? Maybe I can come here this summer for something to do? I havent really been able to get out that much even though I would like to. Thanks. KP
Its a beautiful park BUT I cant recommend the pull though sites. They are very tight and all but a couple are nothing but dead grass and dirt between the asphalt pads. The other part of the campground looked much better. Maybe they should just put nice gravel between the pull through sites and call it a day. I think that would make me feel a lot better about paying $45 a night.
This park is a rare find these days. It is a pay to enter park but that keeps things sane. The ranger over the park is top notch and no nonsense. The grounds crews couldnt be more professional or helpful. I am a frequent visitor and often need to charge my phone and laptop, they are more than helpful in allowing me to use 110 outlets to do so. The hiking trails around the lake and ponds are beautifully maintained. 7 stars if I could.
Its such a great place to take kids to ride bikes and play on the playground my 4yr old son loves going camping and this is so close to home that the whole family camp and enjoy what the outdoors has to offer and day use is just a discovery pass needed no cost
Spent the last 2 nights here and will be staying one more. The pull through spaces are kind of close together, but the back ins have more space. Park staff and hosts have all been very friendly. They use tokens for the showers, 2 for a dollar, buy several! Considering the overall ambience, a good place to stay. Spaces with full hookups are under $50. and tent spaces are less. Disabled persons get a great discount.
State Park was full due to holiday period. Fully understandable. However, we are doing the TransAm by bicycle. In all other state (including Washington State) and national parks rangers were always willing and successful to find a (small) tent spot for us for one night after a long bicycle day. In this particular case both rangers were not willing to help and suggested to cycle another 30 miles (!) or just book a hotel. Full is full, those are the rules. First negative encounter with rangers during our coast to coast trip.
Decent campgrounds, bathrooms arent too exciting, or terribly clean. One shower house works, with tokens, which have to be purchased from main gate station. From looking at the map, I thought our site (31) would be close to easily do some fishing. But it turns out you have to hike a ways down to get to a river access. Kind of a small park, but thankfully it was pretty empty when we stayed (mid October). It was nice to have a Wal-Mart close by.
HORRIBLE! We (as a family of 5) have stayed at several state parks most of which have been in Washington. This park is by far the worst we have been to. It was packed since it was Memorial weekend. They only have 2 bathrooms one of which ran out of toilet paper. Thats 6 womens toilets and 6 in the mens also. For the whole campground. Youre packed in nut to butt with your fellow campers so there is ABSOLUTELY NO privacy. The grass was unmowed so you have to slog through wet grass to get to the bathroom. Which is quite a trek to get to. Other campers just walk right through your camp area (even under our canopy). And they ran out of firewood the first night of the holiday weekend. As for the showers there are only 4. For the whole campground. Then on the path they have barbed wire along the side. Not even cut out, just left in the side of the trail and marked with faded yellow ribbon. Which if you are a runner like my boyfriend that is very dangerous. Just all out bad bad bad. We wont be coming back, EVER.
This is a little oasis in the desert, ideal for folks visiting the area who need a place to park the RV or for locals looking to satisfy the little ones desire to go camping. Its also a nice place to walk the dog or take a stroll. There is abundant shade to make the heat of day bearable, picnic tables, easy hiking trails, a play ground, and easy access to town. Only real drawback is noise from vehicle traffic but that is fairly well muted.
Nice park, amenities good. Restrooms clean, pay showers. Walking path, big park. Our bike was stolen from space 24, out of back of truck. The trail is nice but I think it makes it easy for people to duck in and out of park.
Big surprise! Wonderful picnic place!
One of the most nicest campgrounds in yakima Washington.
For being in such a dry part of the state, this park is very nice. Lots of large grassy fields, the tent sites have plenty of grass, and theres a trail that leads over to the river. And lots of trees to keep you shaded from the sun.
No easy river access, but otherwise beautiful park.
Its a beautiful park, surprisingly hidden just outside Yakima. Theres a campground and places to fish. The playground is fun for am afternoon and there are lots of picnic tables and plenty of parking.Unfortunately when we were there, several homeless people were hanging around the playground trying to interact with the little kids. I looked for a park ranger or camp host, but no one official was around. So we left and went to a park nearby that was more open.
Very peaceful. Nice riding bicycle. Was told by ranger there has been 6 bikes stolen in the last 5 weeks.None were locked up. Ours are locked along with others here. The weather is wonderful 73 to 77.
This is a good place for overnight camping. It is safe and secure. The volunteer camp managers were super nice. Washrooms and showers were clean. (Not sure why the washrooms are getting so many bad reviews from other campers). We were on motorcycles and needed a safe place to stay with no worries of getting our stuff stolen.
Clean tent camping spots, but noise from the city and nearby businesses doesnt die down at night. Feral cats roam through the campsites all night.
Very clean, safe and relaxed park. Good place to stay if you are travelling through Yakima. Fairly close to Costco.
Great atmosphere, very clean, but I miss the plaques! Especially the one about the little alligator haha
Camp host was very nice and generous. The other campers were really nice as well. The fishing pond was perfect for my family. The river is very fast flowing. Over all great time!
Beautiful, clean, we were able to build a bonfire, access to bathrooms and showers, location we were put in allowed me to view traffic that was unwelcome immediately. Nature was up close and personal! I saw raccoons, birds I havent seen before, butterflies, blooming flowers, huge bugs that were cool to look at, and cute little salamanders. The shower was hard to find in the dark but I found it ok. There is a fee required but worth it. A nice playground is there too and I went on the swing set and said whee more than once.
Its a small, but very nice park. I go there 4 or 5 times a week to walk my dog. We both love it.
I did not spend much time here so I can not give an honest opinion on it. We just stopped here to get a geocache.I will say that the place was immaculate! The landscape was impressive! I even saw a woman sitting on a blanket doing meditation by a fountain.
Pretty park with nice Rangers
I loved the openness of the Park, the proximity to Yakima and its restaurants, the sheer number of places that we could have camped, the ability to make a reservation for a 50 amp spot with full sewer hookups, and the well managed care that was obvious for the entire facility. It was beautifully maintained. The only negative at all? Noseeums near the water.
Very very nice. Camping spots head water sewage and power hookups at each spot. The grounds are well-maintained bathrooms are really clean.
Its a quiet beautiful park
Because nobody bother u !! People very nice! Kind.!!
Nice big park with camping and full hook ups close to town. The older trailer sites are to close to each other but the rest rooms and showers have been upgraded. The showers could have been kept cleaner though.
Love it!Back in sites are more spacious then pull thrus.Love all the watered grass areas, easy walking paths, volunteers are very nice and helpful. Weve been to this park several times.FYI, there are Goat thorns in some places IF you get off the beaten path... shoes required! Also watch your bike tires....but again, this is ONLY when your off the designated paths.
Wow this place is amazingly a failure, mens room had one bathroom for 70 camp sites with no toilet paper. My best description would be the horror movie camperpiede, cause were stacked right on top of each other. It looks like downtown Portlands Greyhound station.
An oasis in a dry land. Beautiful nature with trails, ponds, playground. Easy access and location for us. Have stayed numerous times. Will continue!
Nice place and camping spots. No hornets which was lovely. Do wish there was more communication, outaide of a sign on the shower stall, on the showers being out of order on one end of the park. Also, that theres more communication among rangers as far as if there are special group events that may require additional trash or restroom service. But otherwise nice park with calming atmosphere and lots of trees. The playground is a bonus!
Beautiful park with access to the Yakima river. Plenty of room in between the campsites so you feel how have some privacy. Large ponds with walking paths everywhere.
Great oasis close to town. Very well kept and nice spots.
Larger camp space nice with full hook ups for $50. Some shaded areas, but the $45 sites are cramped. It was quiet and a tranquil setting.
You pay to use the campground, than you pay a fee to reserve a space and than you pay AGAIN to use the showers. This is a nice park but fees and more fees ruins the experience.I dont think the state of Washington has a clue how to manage money.
This park is plush for camping with green grass.
Beautiful place to camp
Sites 1-16 are narrow and close to each other. In bed we could hear people talking. Other than than that its a nice little park. Not much to do.
Nice and calm.
Washington state parks are all pretty special in their own way Yakima is that its very large quiet peaceful it does have a ravenous mosquito population be aware forewarned is forearmed. Nice people run the place the river also has ravenous trout.......woot
Picnicked on Mothers Day. Nice quiet park with mature shade trees. The current staff could take better care in watering and mowing of extensive lawns.
Very clean, quiet, lots of room, trails & natural areas to explore. I would definitely recommend a night or two here if youre camping in the area, or an afternoon hike & picnic
Its a nice family friendly camping site. RV camping, tent camping sites are separated. We stayed near where newer restroom. It was very nice and clean. Also there is a playground near camp site. Very well maintained and clean.
️enny is a super helpful genuine guy. 5 stars from me
Beautiful park for camping yet close enough to Yakima in case you want to eat out. A wide variety of restaurants.
Beautiful park with great hiking trails and some pretty funny history around yakima. Find the hidden tunnel if you can. Watch out for homeless people though down by the river.
Very nice!
Nice showers/bathrooms. Lots of room to roam!
We stayed for a quick overnight. Nice and quite.
I loved want i saw of it it looks like a nice place to go visit for the day with the whole family
Great place for kids and groups. Has token operated showers, running water, full hookups, regular camps, and a very nice park. It has a playground and horseshoes. It has a few trails. It has places to reserve for large groups.Discover Pass required. The website is nice for reservations.
Love these park kids play all the time
Great place to stop as we were traveling through. Nice park-like area for walking along the river.
If you are looking for a clean, quiet, nice place to camp, stay away! There is a speedway close by and the races start early evening and go non-stop until around 10:30. The train blows its whistle nearby. The campsite firepit was full of wet, partially burned wood and mud, but the last straw was the womens washroom. Please provide feminine hygiene containers. This would prevent the product from being left on the floor.
Nice place to visit
It was okay, thank goodness we had one of the few sites with some privacy.
Beautiful state park! A river runs thru it. Gorgeous big trees, but open areas too. Variety of camping spots.
We stayed here one night in our travels north and didnt have a good stay. We reserved online and were charged an $8 online reservation fee, which some states charge, but in addition to that, we were charged $5 for living out of state! Wow, that screams out, WE WANT TOURISTS TO COME TO WASHINGTON, doesnt it?? Then when we arrived, our $58 RV site had Fox Tails in it, which are very dangerous and potentially deadly to dogs, so we couldnt stay in that site. We ended up parallel parking in a tent site with no hookups so our dogs could have a weed-free place to do their thing. We couldnt find a park employee so we ended up paying for the tent site we were occupying, another $27. About that time, another RV pulled in behind us, they were supposed to be in #14 but the people in 13 had put out so much stuff, the RV couldnt get its slide out. So we told them to take 15 because we werent going to use it. They were thrilled. The next morning the park attendant wouldnt refund either of the sites for us, stating they couldnt rent out our RV site, even though 14 and 15 had been paid for in full. 69 didnt have any hookups so we didnt use any of their water or power, just parked there for the night, but still no refund. Terrible experience, will never go back there and probably will not use Washington State parks again. I put in a survey with the parks department and will add a star to my review IF I get any refund but Im not holding my breath. Some of the RV sites, the even MORE expensive ones, had a little more space in between them but the row, I think its 1-16 were so close together, terrible surface, hardly a place to sit outside your RV.
Nice park. Have to pay to take a shower thou.
Glen and I enjoyed our camp hosting March and April 2019....the people working there are like family...Beautiful Park The new Ranger is awesome...kids fishing area...wildlife so peaceful...thank you staff we hope to be back
Great site, clean facilities.
Nice clean state park. The camping spaces dont have a lot of privacy but they are separated from each other. It was quiet except for a slight buzz of race track cars I believe. But dont forget Im writing this in the 1st of April so the campground is only about 30% full.My only problem with the place was we could not find a map anywhere when we arrived and no one was on duty at the ranger station so we couldnt ask where various amenities were located.
Lovely campground. Big spots & clean restrooms!
Very nice park. Clean hot showers. Lots of grass and trees.
I Great place for kids to play and camp family friendly pet friendly tons of fun and open space
Just love it
I have camped here for many years and its a beautiful park, but I find myself always singing the same refrain - the rangers need to patrol at quiet time so that we dont have to. Group camp was right behind our loop and tent. Group camp was too loud to allow anyone to sleep and there was no one to complain to. Tried the cell number posted on the board (said it was not in service). Tried calling the other number to the office, a waste of time after office hours. Went walking to find the ranger for help between 10-11pm and saw many infractions with no law enforcement (woman nude from the waste up in full view of passers-by standing in the light of her camper, another woman driving on the sidewalk in front of the bathroom, etc.) Need after hours patrols - I mean, seriously? Are we expected to be our own quiet time enforcement after dark? If so, maybe we should be paid instead of handing over the new $50 per night fee...Lawns are not being watered or mowed, very hard on allergies and full of cheat grass (gets into pets ear canals, resulting in vet visits, very easy to keep down by mowing). Please do your job after dark so we dont have to just be to allowed to sleep...
Nice place.
Great spot. Spaces are spread out more than some campgrounds. Lots of trails and not far to town
Love this place. Great for camping. Just watch out for the racoons.
Great fall colors.
Great place for friends and family! An even better place to can a years worth of food. Grab a camp site, bring your canning gear and head out to all the local farm for fresh food, and pick it yourself vegetables. You know whats in them so it tastes even better when you open them later!
Love this state park. We had a great presentation put on by Ranger Laura Busby. Thank you Laura for a fun evening!
Beautiful pond, love all the water lilies and water life in it!
Pretty peaceful place to go and spend time with the family and kids
Nice park with trails to the Yakima river. Camp sites are small and no privacy. Decent shade at most sites. Bathroom with flush toilets and shower is nice to have. Have seen skunks wandering around and there are ticks in the area. All and all a decent overnight stop if you plan on enjoying Yakima and the surrounding area.
Nice location close to many things
Nice park enjoy a nice long walk with lots of sights to see
Park ranger employees where very friendly and helpful!
Except while when we were there our sons bike was stolen around 3:00am in the morning we heard noise while they unhooked the bike from its tires to the motor home. We cane to visit from Virginia
Green trees. Relatively quiet. Level sites. MOSQUITOES!!
This is a very peaceful and quiet park. A wonderful place to just go and get away for a week or so. The one bad thing is that when it gets dark out its pitch black outside and u cant see anything when u take ur dogs out the only thing that helps from losing them is the leash there on. I will come back here anytime i need to its wonderful.
