Thank you all staff of Colonial Williamsburg! Everything was perfectly labeled and instructions were clear on Covid 19 policys and procedures! Everything was sparkling clean and well kept. Every one was so polite and helpful! God Bless each one of you! Keep it up! Highest standard award
A wonderful place to experience history! It is beautiful and educational. You will get all of your “steps” in and enjoy the view! Highlights were the Art museums, palace and courthouse. We were here in mid November with temperatures in the high 60’s. Wear good walking shoes and bring a little water and a snack!
I’ve loved colonial Williamsburg ever since I was kid and it remains virtually the same as I remember it. I grew up in Maryland, so it’s such a treat to live in proximity to Williamsburg now. Such a beautiful place, almost frozen in time. Merchants Square is full of shops and restaurants, not to mention the campus of William and Mary is gorgeous. If you love history or simply want to enjoy a colonial ambiance, colonial Williamsburg is worth the trip!
Everything was so nice here. It’s obvious that everyone involved cares a lot about this living museum. Although I’ll have to come back when everything is open. Ticket prices are greatly reduced right now but that’s because there are few buildings that you can actually go inside.I was happy to see every staff member wearing a mask. This was pretty much the opposite of what I saw at Jamestown.
Like taking a step back in time...The state capital building is beautiful! and the courthouse with the pillory in front and the powder magazine nearby... not to mention walking down streets full of reconstructed and original houses and taverns and such... The whole experience is just priceless. It really makes you think about the roots of our country.
Excellent experience for the whole family! Even with the whole CoVid19 requirements and place, the experience was very educational and well worth the money especially at the discounted price! would highly recommend for anyone whos in the area and is curious about history!
Our visit to Colonial Williamsburg took place just before Christmas 2019. Our family really enjoyed everything the town had to offer. We did some shopping, learned all about colonial times, went on the carriage ride and ate a wonderful meal. We usually stay at a time share near by and drive over here. Never an issue finding parking at this time of year. Everyone is very friendly and knowledgeable. The entire Williamsburg experience is one of the family’s favorite vacation destinations.
Definitely one of my favorite places. Its a place where history comes alive, its fun, and educational. I come at least once every other year and its still as amazing as it was the first time. Everyone is friendly and the staff are very passionate about what they do and their great with kids! I ended up talking to a reeinactor for 45 min about military history. You need a good 4 full days to truly enjoy what Colonial Williamsburg has to offer. There are museums, houses, hiking, shopping, great food, reenactors, shows, and a real sense of history. If that gets boring you also have Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, Jamestown, and Yorktown to visit that are stone throw away.
Ive been here at Christmas before, its really sad this year. however, all the staff is still super friendly and helpful. Its always a joy to be here.
Enjoyed revisiting this historic site. However, it was crowded, not everyone social distanced and only 50% wore masks. Weekdays may be less busy
Recently traveled to Colonial Williamsburg. My mother had a organ transplant last year and is legally blind. It was her first trip out of the hospital or house in two years! She had an amazing time everything was clean and made us feel safe. My only issue was we used the shuttle to go into the historical part. My mother was in a wheelchair, we got on the shuttle, then the driver told my mom to get out of her chair and into a seat, and then told me to hold the wheelchair the whole ride so it wouldn’t roll. She then told us to get off at the next stop even though it was no where near where we wanted to go. We wanted to go to the capital she told us to get off at the governor palace and gave me walking directions (keep in mind I’m pushing a wheelchair down cobblestone and shell sidewalks) I felt very unwanted because my mother was handicapped as if we were bothering her. I have her name I will report her privately. Besides that everything was amazing, the town was beautiful and my mom had the best time!! It was very special.
Great place to spend a day learning about history and the details of how people lived back in colonial times. Perfect for all ages. Lots of benches to rest, and a shuttle bus to cart you around when its hot.
Really well done. Brings you back in time and gives you an appreciation for life back then. Super friendly employees. Lots to do and see. Definitely worth visiting. A visitors pass is required for some events. Bring your walking shoes. Plan to spend at least a half a day there. Open 9 to 5 PM.
The gardens and music that is always playing is a nice introduction to Colonial Williamsburg. Building is beautiful so take your time walking around and learn some of our history. You can go to the colony without buying any tickets, but there will be some building and shows you will not be able to see without one. You can either walk, which is a nice one, or take the bus. They lost one star for the bathrooms being closed at 5:30 when we were leaving.
Sorely disappointed in the treatment of people who cant wear masks. I had a face shield and wasnt allowed in some places due to missinformed employees. I dont feel like having an argument of my rights while Im on vacation so I didnt. Super dissatisfied that all employees arent informed and choose to argue with paying patrons. It definitely wont be returning to a place that doesnt respect people with disabilities.
Lovely! Lots to see and do here. It is easy to spend a day and I recommend wearing sunscreen as there isnt a ton of shade in the summer. Due to COVID, we couldnt go inside the buildings but still enjoyed the beautiful homes and gardens.
I highly recommend going here! Several of the houses were closed due to Covid (which was a bummer) but they had a discount on tickets because of it. We spent 4 hours here walking around to the buildings. We didn’t use the bus because we didn’t want to miss anything. If you didn’t want to go into the buildings you could walk around for free but I really enjoyed going into the buildings. I just wish everything was open. It was worth the price though and the ticket lady was very informative.
The Visitor center was open for ticket sales, gift shop, and restrooms only. Displays were covered up and there were no paper maps, only QR code for your phone. Because of limited tours and almost no restaurants open, ticket price was reduced to $27 per day. Another victim of the virus! The docents in their costumes (along with modern masks) were great though!
Very helpful ticket agent simplified the limited openings and entertainments Thanksgiving week 2020. She also easily booked a carriage ride for us the same afternoon we arrived. We also purchased tricorner hats here to start our time travel. With only one store open in colonial williamsburg proper, we returned to these gift shops for souvenirs at the end of our stay
Step back in history and slow down and enjoy seeing how things were back when George Washington and Ben Franklin were alive walking the streets of old Town Williamsburg. Go to the same church he used to worship at and see the kinds of houses that the first American settlers lived in because there are 88 Original buildings in Williamsburg so it is quite possible that the founding fathers were in them at some point.. How cool is that? Unless your not interested in how they lived and worked. Put down your iPhone and learn something.
Worth the visit to the capital of colonial Virginia. This historical town not only will give you an insight on how the civilisation was in the XVI and XVII centuries but also is charming and full of nature. I didn’t do the guided tour and just walked around after parking the car in one of the many parks that exist in the middle of town. There are plenty of professionals walking around disguised as historical figures which you can talk and ask about “their” history and anything about those times.
Great way to see into the past of what our country and culture has come from in such a short time!
Most of the buildings are closed due to Covid-19, but they are still charging full price for tickets to see the inside of buildings. The lines for buildings are long even with few people. We waited 30min for the governors?palace. There was one group in front of us in the line. Dont waste your money on a ticket! You can walk thru Colonial Williamsburg for free and see the grounds and buildings. Also the actors are not in character for the 18th century. They are very much in 2020 and all of its craziness. We learned far more history in Yorktown.
Always a fun and interesting trip through history. Yorktown on the York River and Jamestown on the James River are also great historic places to visit nearby. Plenty of restaurants and shops to visit. A wonderful place to travel to with friends and family. There are hotels, bed and breakfast accomodations and colonial homes to rent and stay in, so you can experience colonial living for yourself. There is also a temporary ice skating rink where you can rent skates and purchase a ticket to ice skate while the temperature is still pretty chilly. Take a camera or two with plenty of film or storage so you can capture memories of this truly amazing and historic piece of America.
Wonderful visit as always! The historic area is beautiful but the people really make the experience. Yes, there are changes due to the pandemic but most trades are accessible, some buildings are open and programming continues. Worth a visit!
The shuttle is a great service! We were able to take our dog on the bus, which we didn’t expect. Heads up, in October 2020 the trail from the visitors center to the main area was closed so you pretty much have to take the shuttle.
Love going here. A lot of great historical buildings and different events. Would recommend visiting when youre in town.
This was my first visit. Even with covid19 restrictions and closures, I found the areas that were open were great. The people who put on the demonstrations were interesting and very knowledgeable. Looking forward to another trip. If you have never visited Colonial Williamsburg, or is very close to a must see.
If you like history, this is a must see. You can easily spend several days here. Most of the pictures are from the Governors Mansion. The last is from the carpenters shop. Loved the grain of the wood on the piece they made. There are some replicas but most of the buildings are original and go back to when we were still an English colony. They have all the trades from brick making to wig maker, weavers, carpenters, black smiths and on and on. The people working there are dressed in period garb and explain life in that time period. The are typically knowledgeable and interesting.
Great place to learn more about American history. Informative & friendly volunteers in various buildings. Art museum offers creative workshops. Plenty of meal choices within walking distance. Make sure to read the plaques on the bridge as you walk to the historic buildings. The Historic Triangle Pass is worth buying if you plan to go to Jamestown & Yorktown. We were at CW at the start of the pandemic when the Historic Triangle parks closed and they refunded our full purchase price with no questions asked. We will definitely be returning in the future.
A unique experience. We enjoyed walking down the old streets that gave us a sense of what life was like back then. The employees are great and really do their part to entertain. I’d recommend going to anyone that has interest in our history.
Great afternoon of visiting historical landmarks. The grounds were in excellent condition. Even though a lot of the buildings were closed due to COVID-19 they were still amazing to see just from the outside. The shops and restaurants provided lots of avenues of enjoyment. Social distancing was a concern in some places. On the most part everyone was doing well. This on top of being close to Williams and Mary college.
We have been visiting for years. Almost recently for our honeymoon which was during the holiday season (and got lucky enough to be there during a snow storm!) breathtaking! I cannot explain the experience of watching the snow, walking around to see the beautiful decorations, and sipping their hot chocolate hand in hand with my hubby!
First time there in 50 years. Very well organized and friendly staff. Highly recommend it.
I was happy to finally make it to one of those always wanted to go places but just a little sad that so much of it was not able to be open due to Covid-19 but still happy I was able to experience it with my son and his family.
If you revere history and democracy CW is a must visit. Start your children young and keep it up. Theyll cherish the lessons and the family trips. Nothing hokie about CW. Its real...well almost! The learning experiences offered are broad and interesting and accurate. Step back int time to learn from our forefathers.
Fantastic place to visit. Historical town and re-enactments that all should know and see.
We went several years ago and it was great. This trip was nothing like the other. Because of COVID-19 nothing much at all was open to tour. No reenactments. You buy your ticket to see the things the public cant just walk through and see. Since very little was open and the space was very limited, save yourself the money and just walk around. At least until this is over.
The best way to visit is to do it for free, instead of paying for the $31 day pass. Apparently the locals know this as hundreds of people walk dogs here. The places you can enter only with a ticket - musuems and houses - are unimpressive and not worth the money. The real attraction is the atmosphere, feeling as if you were in the colonial times with all the architecture (and sheep). Its one big immersive theme park. Just park your car at the visitor center parking lot (no ticket required), take the bus to the colonial area (no ticket required) and walk around. I would give it a five-star if I did it for free.
A lot of buildings were closed but we still enjoyed ourselves! Low crowds allowed much more discussion and learning. The app could use some improvements as we had difficulty finding when the various re-enactments and tours took place. You’ll need to spend some time planning out your day to really maximize your time there. All in all highly recommend!
I absolutely loved visiting here. So much history in this area. Staff was great and very knowledgeable. There was one young man in particular that was so passionate and it was a beautiful thing to see. We loved the axe throwing as well.
Low key vacation spot with great historic re-enactments. The meals with the tavern keepers are a lot of fun. The newly renovated museum is worth an afternoon.
Very Nice and Educational place!!! Exciting to Visit there. Great souvenir shop too.
Beautiful area. Home to William & Mary College. The downtown area is filled with well manicured lawns, hedges and grounds. The colonial buildings are fun to see but after the first few they all look the same. I’m not a big shopping & dining type person which is mostly what you’ll find here. So while it was nice to visit, I could skip this in the future.
Always enjoy visiting CW and we learn something new each time. Despite some things being closed and some restrictions due to covid, still had a great visit.
I know covid has taken a toll on all of us but I called and was told that everything was up and running. This is far from the truth. Most of the exhibits were closed and the few that were opened were minimal. The carriage ride on The Red Buggy was the highlight of the day. We attempted to join in on the Haunted Tour but were accosted by a very angry woman in period clothing that told us we could not stand where we were. There was plenty of room 10-15 feet around us but were told to move. I asked why and she replied she would call security. So that was also a bust. I just wish we would have been told the truth when we booked our vacation. It was a sag experience. There was no one with and history sharing except a very nice gentleman who was demonstrating the flint lost rifle. So two pleasant experiences out of the entire day.
Love talking with the actors here! The water fountains are all off due to covid so bring water!! There was water available for purchase. It was not crowded! There was still plenty open to see.
Wonderful setting to learn, explore and enjoy the beginnings of the USA.
These photos are from 2012 when I was stationed in Norfolk. I fell in love with this historic area. Colonial Williamsburg is the largest outdoor living museum in the country, upholding their educational mission through immersive, authentic 18th-century experiences and programming for our guests. In 1926, the Reverend Dr. William Archer Rutherford Goodwin, with the financial backing of John D. Rockefeller Jr., began to restore Williamsburg to its original colonial state, starting with the purchase of the historic Ludwell-Paradise House. Today, Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area houses restored and historically preserved buildings, 88 of which are originals.
An entire town museum! People in characters! Dont miss the ghost stories tour!
This is a great place to visit and see the country at that time. The staff are engaged & informative. They explain the times very well and you understand the challenges of that time. They handle the COVID fine. Skip the Governors Palace and hit the cooks, blacksmiths, carpenters and smaller for the real feel of the times.
This colonial town is a great place to visit. There is a pass that you can purchase for about $40 a day, which will allow you to enter all sites and learn more about each site. If you just want to walk around you can, there are cast members that seat outside of some paces and talk to you about the place. The shops are all open to walk in and visit to all and there is plenty of good places to eat in a colonial Inn. You can also take a carriage ride around the square instead of walking the square. I highly recommend if you are in the area to stop by and visit this place to see for yourself how good the experience is.
What a great place to visit - the restoration of Williamsburg is astounding to see. There is so much to learn there...make sure you take a full day (or two). A lot of buildings are closed due to the pandemic...cannot wait to get back for a more detailed tour one day when I can see everything!!
Such a peaceful place, in contrast to modern society. Well worth the experience to step back in time, just for a couple hours! Dont skip the museum, fabulous!
Colonial Williamsburg is quite a wonderful place, especially if you like history. You will have an especially good time if you enjoy what colonial life is like. There are plenty of shops where there are trained professionals working a specific craft in the way it was done back then, such as carpentry and gunsmithing. The town is beautiful, and really helps you appreciate what life used to be like, and how technology today really makes things easier. It is also it friendly. Pets cannot go into buildings, but there is still plenty to see without going inside. Its also a family friendly place, even family encouraged, as everyone will have find some fun here.
Very important historical landmark in Williamsburg-Virginia with a living history museum. This place is huge but walkable or you can book a bus tour around the vicinity. But walking around is best as it is flatland and with facilities around. There are many joggers, bicyclist, dog walkers and pedestrian lanes. Leisure walking around is more pleasant. You will find nostalgic buildings of the 18 th century but some buildings are rebuilt and some restored with so many improvements. There are cafes and gift shops as well and rest rooms are clean. Always worth a visit, I can highly recommend.
Great BBQ at reasonable prices. Dont pass this place up.Sorry folks. Messed this up. Was trying to review a local eatery. The visitors center would have been impressive if it wasnt mostly shut down due to COVID. Something they conveniently left off the website when we were planning our trip.
Very nice. Especially around Christmas time. Nice to see the decorations. Fun nighttime parade that you are in. Excellent tour guides. Really great for those who love history.
Colonial Williamsburg is always a beautiful place to visit with your family. We typically come here in winter when it’s less crowded and there are no long lines. The recreation of the colonial buildings is well done and the tour guides in the homes are well versed.
Amazing to see buildings from the early part of American history and key to the founding of the United States. The staff is very knowledgeable and also patient about asking questions. Life was so different back then and they give a good idea of what life was like. They also demonstrate the different trades from brick making to sit making, weaving, pewter work silver work, metal smithing, carpentry and more. Then they use what they produce to repair or build in the historic site.
Although most of Williamsburg is closed due to covid-19 people that we met in the visitor center very kind and helpful explain what was going on in detail
Beautiful place. We did the haunted Williamsburg walk and that was a lot of fun, highly recommend Williamsburg.
Took my 11 year old son and we had a really good time. So much to explore and see and learn. Wish we would have had more time for our visit! If you have kids, highly recommend going to the kids play area!!
Beautiful area! It is a great place if you love history, friendly staff and great museums. Even if you are not a history buff DoG street is a beautiful place to walk or bike and enjoy the scenery. Driving the Colonial Parkway during the different seasons is also very enjoyable.
Great place to visit. My family and I have been visiting Williamsburg every few years for as long ad I can remember. Its great to see new exhibits with each visit. This year we brought my baby and toddler with us. It was quite stroller friendly as long as you dont mind leaving the stroller outside the exhibits. It is very easy to manuever a stroller around town, though. We always have a blast and enjoy taking in the history.
We loved it. That staff was so helpful and so willing to answer your questions. Would highly recommend
Well done visitors center with great shuttle service throughout the historic town. Two big gift shops in the main hall. Generous parking - see if you can find the shady spots!
The Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area visit was an amazing example of history coming to life. See first hand how people lived in those days and how the community was formed. To tour the buildings in Colonial Williamsburg, you must stop at the Visitor Center and purchase tickets or exchange online tickets for passes. The walk to Colonial Williamsburg is approximately half a mile from the visitor center. You may take a tram to the Colonial village at not additional cost. The Governors Palace was the heart of the town. It was believed the governor should have a large home to show wealth and strength. A guided tour of the Governors Palace was informative and also had amazing architectural designs. While you will likely take a self-guided tour of Colonial Williamsburg and many of the buildings; other buildings will only be available to view as a guided tour (included in cost of admission). This includes the Governors Palace, Capitol, Courtroom, a tavern and several other buildings. The presenters are knowledgeable about the history of the building and the time period. Some are very detailed with the presentation. I would give yourself 15 to 40 minutes per building as a guided tour. You may choose to take a horse-drawn carriage tour of Colonial Williamsburg to experience Colonial days. Tickets for a specific time must be purchased in advance at the Visitor Center. While streets are closed to automobile traffic in Colonial Williamsburg, roads from the city of Williamsburg connect to Colonial Williamsburg. You may enjoy a visit to a gift shop or one of several taverns opening for lunch and dinner in Colonial Williamsburg without an admission ticket. An admission ticket will be required to tour the other shops, businesses and houses in Colonial Williamsburg. Some of the buildings are handicap accessible, but others are not. Some buildings may only be accessible on the first floor.Ample restroom facilities and beverage stations are available throughout Colonial Williamsburg.
Because of social distancing crowds were small, and it made the tours more relaxing - had to wear face masks in the buildings. Good day for touring with relatively low temperatures in the mid-70s
Great historic town. Lots of activities to do with the family, we loved visiting R. Charltons coffee house as well as visiting the historic homes of the Randolph and Wythe families and the governors palace. You do not want to miss the soldiers March. I definitely recommend you give yourself at least a couple of days to explore this beautiful town that seems to have been frozen in time.
Staff is really helpful! Properly organized, easy to find, easy to park. This is your jumping off point to an amazing historical experience. Stop here to get you tickets and ask any questions for can think of before getting started.
The candy store had a huge selection to pick from. The covered apples are delicious. We didnt pay to see the sites because we only had a short amount of time, therefore there really wasnt anything to do but shop.
Great place to reconnect with American history could have been a little better if more buildings were open to see but still overall enjoyable given current Covid-19 situation.
Some of the buildings were closed due to covid but some buildings they still allowed tours every 15 minutes so it was safe for tourists to go in. The buildings were beautiful and the staff was kind and informative!
Buy the tickets to make it more fun! If a building has a flag out front, you need a ticket to enter. Tickets can be purchased on the grounds or at the visitor center and you get shuttles for free (with free parking). The horse buggy rides were sold out today. If you desire to ride, purchase your tickets early as the carriage rides are not paid with a visitors ticket. At 1pm 2 sets of bands played through the street. While dogs are welcomed in most outdoor areas, ours was not able to enter any buildings and many ticketed gardens were limited. I didn’t mind because I love to people watch but know ahead of time! The Christmas season draws a lot of people in. We skipped over the holiday decoration tours as there were people who claimed to wait over an hour to gain admission.
Such a breath taking walk around. A real walk into the past. Thank you for preserving our history.
Great visit. Very interesting for the whole family but beware. We stopped at the visitor center first and were told we had to pay an entrance fee. We spent $140.00 for a family of 5 only to find out it was free. It turned out the fee was for entry into several buildings.
The visitor center was great, even though there were some areas closed due to covid concerns. Lots to see! They usually have presentations but cant right now.
Never been anywhere like this before. It was amazingly well preserved and gave a real insight in to old America. The bars were awesome with live music from days gone by.
Williamsburg was amazing, the story behind Williamsburg and how it helped shape our Nation is vital to appreciate what we have. The tours are great and reasonable. With your tickets your invited to enter in many of the shops and houses their. Were they are dressed in colonial clothes and mimic the 1700s.We were impressed with how much there is to do in Williamsburg Colonial district. We plan on going back and taken our kids next time. Truly an amazing place to visit. And Yorktown and Jamestown are just a short distance away
High quality and a great place to vacation atleast once.
Interesting history and beautiful structures.
Hard to really enjoy with all the restrictions but still a favorite place of mine!
Took the family here for vacation from Oklahoma. This is an attraction that can last all day. This is a place you really need to see in person to appreciate.
Excellent visit. Definitely worth it to get here early in the morning and purchase tickets so you can see all the more in depth historical locations and discussions.
The Visitors Center at Colonial Williamsburg is a large place. There was ample parking when we were there. Im not sure how it is when it is the busier season. They had reduced rates on tickets during this time. I assume that was due to just opening back up after Covid19 restrictions. We purchased our tickets at the Visitors Center, but you can also purchase them online. The Cafe here is ised right now I assume because of Covid19 as well. The staff we encountered were friendly. Theres a walking path to the village or you can take their free shuttle buses. We walked over and took the bus back.
Very helpful staff. COVID has changed everything, but we still enjoyed our day.
Charging half admission thankfully as there is hardly anything to do, see and enjoy. Covid killed the fun here.
A great place for anyone who enjoys US history especially colonial times. There is definitely too much to see in one day. It is truly a working historic village.
Very historical place with friendly and safe staff. A real treat for the whole family.
Funny to see signs around the historic area about following CDC guidelines after they just stuffed you onto a shuttle bus filled to maximum capacity.
Very cool and awesome to be immersed in such history
One of the absolute most amazing places in America gorgeous colonial style buildings where the history truly comes alive. The area and the weather is absolutely perfect the local food is to die for particularly if you love clams.Theres not enough good things to say this is a must vacation for everyone.
1st time here and it was great. Due to covid a lot of the attractions were closed but I had a great time. Got to see the Mansion and it was breathtaking!
Enjoyed it! Beautiful!
There is so much to do here! I spent three days in this site during a significantly reduced-activity-availability season and still felt like I was missing a lot of the various available activities. There was a great deal of information to digest. I could have spent the whole week and might have been able to see all that there was to see. I simply cannot imagine how much time would be required to see and learn everything that would have been available during a normal season, pre-COVID-19. I absolutely will be coming back again.
Ask about unadvertised educator discounted annual pass with faculty ID. Great deals in the shops.
Colonial Williamsburg is a beautiful, charming area near the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. You can truly feel the history walking through the streets and seeing the actors in their colonial garb. Family friendly activities abound. Very fun place to visit and explore!
