This is one of our few disappointments in the GSMNP. Signage and information on how to get here is okay, but once you are in the valley (after a pretty long trek), the signage and landmark information is virtually nonexistent. There is supposed to be a printed self-guided tour booklet available, but we never saw it. At minimum, the NPS should make the guide available online.
Very nice secluded location. Great place to have a fire on a cold windy day to get out of the snow. Wish people were more into preserving history instead of stealing. This place used to be a museum until it was broken into many times and they removed the remaining artifacts.
It is really neat to view a historic house. The house was built in the 1800s, but was renovated in the 1960s to the current view. There are Elk nearby in the Cataloochee Valley. The interior of the smaller white building is in need of some remodeling from all of the foot traffic going thru it. Im glad some of the historic buildings were preserved.
Awesome place and easy to find love seeing the Elk here as well.️
Well-preserved house with some nice historical information about the Palmer family. Unfortunately the artifacts are no longer able to be viewed, thanks to vandals. The Palmer cemetery is also located nearby, up a steep hill. The trailhead is marked by a small sign along the road just before the barn. About a 10-minute walk to reach it. Some of the old tombstones are still readable.
Cool and historical. Unfortunately the inside is kinda beat up and some of the artifacts have been stolen.
The attic is filled with bats! Beware! Otherwise a neat place, very cool preserved historical site.
Beautiful place, got to see the elk!!!
Fun ride and time exploring, old history
Awesome place. Kept in such good condition could move in. Really enjoyed all the history there
My mom was born in the area there and pictures of my grand and great grand parents are on display in the Palmer house
We were out driving around and came upon this house. It is interesting to see how people used to live back in the day. U could she the rooms and sizes u could still see the wall paper that used to b there. They had photos of the original house and people that lived there
A place of historical value
Beautiful. Go early a.m. or late p.m. to see the elk. Theres a couple of old cemeteries a church a school and other old houses. Follow Tread Lightly practices while in the park.
Interesting historical home in the Catahoula Valley. We hiked up to the family graveyard which was haunting and serene. Sadly, the tour aspect of the house is in disarray due to theft and vandalism. But, its still an interesting place to walk though and imagine life back then.
Interesting place to visit in the Catalahoochee Valley. Its worth the drive off the beaten path to visit.
Was interested in what it was like 100 years ago in the NC mountains
A truly magical place! Thank you to all the park staff and volunteers who strive to upkeep this legacy! Also thank you to the tourists who respect it and treat it with the honor it deserves!
Would have loved living here!
Its as interesting as any other historic house structure. Cataloochee area is beautiful and Id advise spending more time hiking and less time in old houses while visiting.
Better than Cades Cove in my opinion
Great history and awesome just takes you back to the good old days
Great old homestead
Fantastic unspoiled area, great hiking. Bit of a challenge getting here but well worth the effort.
Nice & quiet here leaves were beautiful
Historical road trip. Worth the visit.
Very interesting place. Best part is viewing the Elk on the property.
Too haunted. Its like you can smell death in there and Im not talking old house smell. A woman and two men died there and I dont think anyone ever should enter the family cemetery. I didnt go upstairs or to the old barn and shed or the shed in the back. When you walk in you just know somethings up you know? Go there to get a mild spook. other than the beautiful views I wouldnt go there again. Not to mention on down the road to a pull off to the creek we found tiny capsules of literal drugs they were like maybe an inch long in length. We hightailed it out of there shortly after. I personally dont recommend anybody go there.
Cool house and got to see some elk, including a real nice buck, up close later in the evening as we were leaving.
Had lots of information on the house inside on the walls. Loved the house and was it was.
Learn history spend time with family and see elk, bears, hiking, and picnic.
Beautiful area with several miles of dirt roads.
Free to explore this frontier style farm nestled in the Smokies!
