The guides at the location were just wonderful when we were there on tour. It was great to see this location, which was on our bucket list, the same time we went to Fords Theater. This stop is a must for any Abraham Lincoln buff. We have a full review of this location on our blog site and YouTube channel.
After enjoying the sixteenth president’s waffles next door, we decided to meander across the street to see where he was murdered… sounds fun, right? I won’t go into any grand detail retelling American history here. There are books aplenty for that. Suffice it to say, there is a pleasant, but somewhat campy, museum exhibit on the lower level, and at regular intervals, guests are invited up into the theater proper for a spirited retelling of that fateful night’s events. Afterward, you can hang about for photos and whatnot, then make your way across the street to Petersen House to see Lincoln’s deathbed, more museum exhibits, and, of course, a gift shop to satisfy all your Lincoln merchandise needs.
This museum was incredible. It was not just amazing to see where Lincoln died, but the museum was so informative and inspirational, chronicling the effect of Lincoln and his principles after his death. Each of the floors had a different exhibit. Though one of my favorite things about the museum was the stairwell where the column contained books all about Lincoln (picture shown). Also kid friendly!
We stopped by the diner next door, so naturally we stopped by The House Where Lincoln Died to pay our respects and appreciate the dedication the country has taken to preserve this House. Although none of us lived during the time Lincoln served as President, anyone who visits DC to go visit the White House and other historic political places must walk to this House and pay their respects to Lincoln. Very humbling experience.
The people who work here are wonderful to visitors. Anyone with an interest in history will be left in awe in the small room where Lincoln spent his last.
We stumbled upon this place after we were turned away from the Ford Museum. Side note, if you want to visit the place Lincoln got shot make sure you make plans to get there early (they are a full function theater and run shows in the afternoon and evening). When we directed to the house where Lincoln when moments after being shot and where he eventually died, it was a surreal experience. You are able to see the actual bed where he passed away, walk through a timeline of the events following his death, and eventually down a staircase filled with all the books written about Lincoln. This is a great museum and the tour guides are fantastic and animated as well!
This is a very interesting place to see in Washington for its history. It can be a little sad. But its great to see a house from that era that had been preserved for future generations. It gives you a sense of how people lived at that time. I think it should not be missed if youre visiting the Ford theatre across the street. Its a big part of the story.
More extensive than I’d expected and really an extension of Ford’s Theater lots of good information. Well worth the trip.
You get to cross the street and tour this historic location while taking the Ford Theatre tour. Not to be missed and you will not regret this time.
More interesting to me than Fords Theater. Gave me the chills and I got a bit choked up seeing the bed on which Lincoln died. It really is shorter than he was. Also they have the last known photo of his casket. Sad but honorably done.
Rip lincon
So this is the place where lincoln got assassinated
The house where Abraham Lincoln died. Historical.
Enjoyed this tour! Fun way to gain some facts about Lincoln. Combine this with the tour of the theatre makes a great day!
This was a great surprise. Stopped by here after lunch and was amazed by the great history found here. Beautiful tall book tower. Sad that there are no more descendants of such a great leader! Thank you!
Went to see but closed for renovation. Still interesting to see because of the history. An unobtrusive boarding house until 4/14-15/1865 when it became part of history. Even though closed still 3 stars to see and soak in what that night must have been like.
We enjoyed this more than we thought we would! Great display, great park ranger and great flow through the exhibit! If you are interested in doing the tour make sure you sign up early. The tour covers the Ford theater and the House where Lincoln died. Tickets are at the Ford Theater. NPS stamps are also at the Ford Theater.Another option is to just walk into the House where Lincoln Died (like we did) and do half the tour. We had no idea tickets were required and no one asked to see them until I went to get my NPS stamps. Oops!
Theres not much to say about this place. Its the house where Lincoln was carried after he was shot, and the place where he ultimately died. It has been decorated and made to look just as it did on that tragic day. The Park Rangers there are a wealth of information and knowledge. If you ask them questions youll be surprised at the other insights youll get from them.
I work not that far away from Petersen House and I am very unhappy about the chaos the lines in front of the house create. There is no one line that tourists line up. They just hang out around the house and BLOCK the WHOLE sidewalk. I literally had to cream at people excuse me to get them to make space for me to pass. You need to do something about this.
Pretty nice, went here on senior trip
Havent been here since I was little and always wanted to bring my kids. Still a wonderful piece of history to see.
This is a must see stop when on a historical journey through Washington DC. This is a very surreal setting of the place where Abraham Lincoln died after being shot across the street in the Fords Theater. The history behind this location is amazing and the restoration and addition of a historical museum makes it one of my top places to visit in DC.
You go here after Fords Theater. Peterson House has informative exhibits and its worth the time spent there.
Right across the street from Fords Theater is this great little museum.
Hey, wanna go to a play?
Nice it is part of Ford Theatre
This is across the street from the Fords theatre where Lincoln was shot. He was taken across the street to this location where he died at a later time. This is smaller self guided tour where you can learn more about Lincoln and a small store to buy Lincoln related stuff. While this is the location where Lincoln died I learned a lot more at the Fords theatre.
After seeing Fords Theater, this is a must see. The tower is truly impressive. So much to see and the gift shop isnt filled with cheap touristy gifts.
Great compliment to Fords Theater visit. Rooms setup in fashion From Lincolns time. Highly recommended to visit if going To Fords Theater.
If you are going to all the places having to do with the Lincoln assasination like Fords theater the Surratt houses Dr. Mudds house and Fort McNair you must add this to youre list.
We toured the Peterson House (where President Lincoln was taken after being shot and died the next morning) because we could not get into Fords Theater due to a showing. There was a lot of history about Lincoln and the quest to capture those responsible for his assassination.
Very historical, and all the information you need
This place is pure history
Visited on a school field trip in the 6th grade. Walked over from visiting Fords Theatre. Pretty sure I got chills when I saw the bed.
Enjoyed the history. The Lincoln Tower of Books was amazing.
Very inspiring and educational. Kids really liked the Lincoln book tower. Definitely worth seeing.
Its makes it very easy to picture this event as it actually happened. Small house so be prepared for that if you are trying to navigate kids.
This is an amazing museum thats included with the tour of Fords theater. Give yourself plenty of time because theres a lot of artifacts, exhibits and information.
Where Abraham Lincoln died. Somber place.
Great place
Holds some amazing history. It is the place where Lincoln died and it has a great museum area too.
Amazing place, so much history!.
I you want to go on the Lincoln tour this has a lot of the great things. You can see how Lincoln was a large man in a very small bed.
After Fords Theatre you must visit this place to have a good icon of this fatal afternoon 1865....
Also an integral part of the Fords theatre visit. Seeing the tiny rooms recreated is sombering. Go up to 4th floor and work down for a more indepth exhibit. Then walk down the two flight around a HUGE stack of books about Lincoln. Great pic option for Lincoln fans . Good interactive exhibit about leadership. (2 Nice quiet clean, large family bathrooms on this floor). Bottom floor - bookstore, shop
Its a very special place. Its sad too. Abe Lincoln was a wonderful President and an extraordinary man. This place must be knowed.
Great way to really understand what went on with Abraham Lincoln as well as the USA in that time period.
Didnt abraham lincoln die their why is it still open it should be rundown
Beautifully kept to look just as it did in Lincolns time.
Never forget a great person.
I would give it the 5 stars it deserves. but its depressing to think about how my favorite president was assassinated here.

President Lincoln passed away here.
Sadly i wasnt able to get into see the amazing fords theater but a great staff member saw that i was in a wheelchair and helped me get through the many houndreds of bus tour people to an elevator to get inside the museum, it was a somewhat wheelchair accecable museum except for the floor where he died, but the staff was still great to get me to see it all anyway. A huge must see!
Great story inside this historically significant home
Cant believe Booth also lived here too.
President Lincoln was brought here after John Wilkes Booth shot him across the street at Fords Theatre. Lincoln died in this boarding house.
