One of the most unique venues we have ever attended. A block from the Gallery metro station right at Chinatown (so lots of great food nearby). Normal security wand check and bag check. Staff all super friendly. Venue is pretty, and yep you are in a synagogue during on pews! Every seat is good but definitely some poles could block your view, and some of the balcony seats could be farther back than ideal, so wouldnt hurt to arrive a little early. Seating is up a flight of stairs from the bathroom (plus another flight to the balcony) so plan on some stairs. Venue is pretty and lighting is wonderful and intimate. Sound is good, although tended a little to the loud and echoy. They had a bar serving beverages in plastic cups with lids. No food (but plenty outside in the vicinity). Overall a great venue and would definitely go back.
This is a great venueNeeds a little shoring up sometimes but overall it’s a gem. I had a little difficulty understanding Paul Krugman most recently and I’m not sure if that could’ve been fixed with better sound reinforcement.Sight lines are decent on both levelsThere choices of speakers tend to run the “NPR set” so I wish they’d branch out a little more and maybe try something a little more radicalOverall I enjoy coming hereEven the serious pat down and security checks(totally understandable) don’t thwart me from comingThe place has a lot of historical value for me too. Back in the 80s it was an AME church and I saw the great Dick Gregory speak hereSo glad it still exists as a gathering place for folks with ideas
MOST BEAUTIFULLY INCREDIBLE VENUE! My family and I were in DC/Arlington to lay my nana to rest. While there, it came to my attention that a good friend of mine who tour manages would be in town while I was. With a sold out show in place for St Lucia, my family and I made our way down. I’ve never been to a concert in such a sacred place but, man, was it amazing. The acoustics alone made the entire show sound like we were sitting right inside the instruments. The room was beautiful with Jewish culture, beautiful wood pews, and a ceiling painting that would inspire anyone. The show was one of the most perfectly sounding. The venue staff was uber pleasant. We even had one of the managers escort us to better seating when she saw we had VIP passes. I highly recommend Sixth&I for a show!
What an amazing Synagogue! When we started looking for location for our special day, I was prompted to check out Sixth and I. The sanctuary is beautiful and unlike any other spaces we visited in the city, simply put the location was a winner. The other critical part is the team you work with and here Robin aided us like a true pro. Communication is key, she was prompt in responding to our requests for visits, walk throughs and even played our music pre and post service. She aided in every possible way to ensure the day went off without a hitch! If you are looking looking for the best location to honor your event, stop looking and get to Sixth & I.
Havent been in a while and was happy to find a new screening and ticket checking process. And they now serve beverages! The venue is fantastic, intimate and good acoustics. Lots of stairs, so be prepared with good shoes.
What a fantastic place to be. Attended a special service for MLK day and found it such a special time apart. The Rabbi was inspirational and motivational striking a perfect balance of illustrating the change in the world that needs to be done and our ability as a people to make vfx the change happen. While I could not attend on a regular basis due its geographical location, I wish I could.
Great as aakways, up until we could not buy a signed cookbook due to a computer error. A big bummer way to end a otherwise great evening.
Wow what an amazing place to see a show.I went to see Beth hart, and she was fantastic. The place is really a church. You sit in pughs to watch the show. The acoustic are amazing and really carry the voice and instruments through the churchThey offer plenty of adult drinks and give you these near cups to use that are reusable. The staff is friendly and helpful. If you have a chance to see a show there, do it!
Beautiful building, fulfilling services, various programs for all ages. I love it!
Great synagogue with various services. Has good shows and book signings. has young professional group as well. And childrens services.
Cool place for a classical music concert. The acoustics was good and view of the stage was great too.
The venue itself is very beautiful and there is lots of security on site. The knowledge and general coordination of the venue staff, however, could use some work. I purchased VIP tickets to a show here where my party and I were able to sit in on the bands sound check. As we entered, security didnt tell us any specifics of where to go or what will be happening during the VIP event. Once the sound check ended, we were kicked out on the street and forced to wait 45 minutes (in December) just to come back in with the rest of general admission - repeating the entire security check. This didnt make much sense because there was a lobby with several seats that could have easily held the dozen or so VIP members that paid $100 per ticket while we waited for doors to open. But I digress. Once inside again, our specific VIP tickets wouldnt scan in their system, so we had to spend time with a manager getting new tickets that also for some reason wouldnt scan; but that was pretty much the last speed bump we encountered. Overall, the venue and show were great, but there were some debatable decisions made for the venues VIP guests and some lack of communication.
Beautiful space and very accommodating. Halls and bathrooms are small though.
Amazing place for those looking to learn more about the Jewish faith and practice. The people are incredibly friendly and open and they welcome anyone of any background. I have attended events, classes, shabbat and high holiday services. They have a variety of classes that are reasonably priced for those in their 20s and 30s.
Great, intellectually-stimulating events. Prices can be a little expensive for events, but after attending 4x separate events over the past 5 years, can vouch for the quality of the events.
So, I am pretty shocked at the excellent reviews of this venue. Obviously they didn’t sit in the second floor. Now, as a person who builds stuff for a living I can clearly see how ridiculous the second floor seating is constructed. With huge ceilings, there is plenty of room to allow for a more steep seating area and allow for the poor people who showed up 30 minutes early to simply.....see the stage. I mean, how can you justify selling tickets to an event where a good portion of the seats don’t even have a view of the performance? I am surrounded by people staring off into space..... I literally can not see a single inch of the stage. No, there is no giant sitting in front of me, no pole, Just normal people.Secondly, no assigned seating? Seriously? What is this, the bus from Forrest Gump? There is a reason a lot of people hate Southwest Airlines. Can you say, “seat taken?” We walk in and there are more purses and coats saving seats than there are people in the pews. Way up in the nose bleeds, there is a lady who literally was still saving a seat thirty minutes into the show. She turned down a late comer, 30 minutes in....... There is a reason almost every other venue has assigned seating. Now, not everything is terrible. Sound is fine, staff is fine, performer is fine. Architecture is cool, place is clean. But ultimately, what does any of that matter when you CAN’T SEE ANYTHING!Please, rebuild the risers, or stop selling tickets to seats that don’t have any view.......Lastly, I had trout for dinner, and the salmon color on the walls is off putting. Too much fish in one day.P.S. Any first year architect student can fix your line of site problem.
Beautiful place. The concert Jordan Reiki concert was great.
Great events and the venue is small enough to the point which feel that you are up close and personal
Great venue, larger than it seems and they dont make the women sit in the balcony.
Great venue. Near bus stops and metro stations and plenty of options to eat around.
Great place to see speakers. Big yet intimate.
Have attended several musical performances at this venue. A small intimate place for a performance. Hardly a bad seat and decent acoustics. The crackly pews as people shift weight can be annoying during a quieter show. Drinks in the small lobby area are always available.
Easy access to facility, staff polite.
Venue is stunning and feels very church-basementy, which is surprising given the caliber of the acts that they pull in.Like any GA venue, get to the show early if you’d prefer a spot up front. The stage isn’t all that high so it can be hard to see from the back.Drink policy is a bit bonkers too: you can only use their special cups, which you have to purchase in addition to your drink. This, through has the advantage of giving you the chance to drink wine out of a sippy cup like a pre-adolescent wino.
Love this wonderful place. Thank ypu
Great place and great people. They have many programs and many of them are open to the public. You dont need to be a member of the congregation
Would be more than happy to see a lecture or discussion in this beautiful synagogue, but we went for the first time to see a rock act with a pretty elaborate stage show, light and sounds meant to get you up and dancing. Except we were in a room full of pews, with inconsistent sound quality in a lot pockets of the room. Loved the music, but the atmosphere was too tough to get past and just dance. We left early, won’t go back for rock shows.
I attended a concert here. The interiors are beautiful but the sound quality could be better in my opinion. However the overall experience was really nice.
I love going to services here, I always feel so welcomed.
Just saw Beth Hart solo show. What a great intimate place to see a live act! Beth was impeccable as always!
Sixth&I is an incredible community of kind, spiritual, inclusive people
Amazing building with great people. Lots of things going on here.
Beautiful space with great acoustics. We went to a concert in May and the room was kept cool, so be sure to bring a sweater.
Great acoustics, friendly staff, reasonably priced drinks, and a great performance made for a memorable evening. Highly recommend this venue.
Safety IssuesNice venue, decent acoustics. The performers did a great job. However, the event staff barred the exits, and when asked, told us we had to wait for the performance to end to “exit stage right”. We found an unlocked door behind a “do not exit” sign. This is extremely unsafe!! I would not recommend attending anything here since it is clearly a fire hazard.
Due to this so-called Synagogue planning to mourn Palestine people on Israel Independence day is disgusting. If your are truly following your Jewish faith I recommend leaving this Synagogue and finding one that actually supports Israel and not the people who want to see Israel wiped off the map.
Nice staff (smiling and they gave me a free umbrella bag) and small enough venue that youre not paying an exorbitant amount for seats. Get there a little early, since there arent assigned seats...and they are pues, BUT even if you are on the second floor, in the back, youre less than 100 feet from the stage. You can buy beer (and I think wine too) here! They serve it in a souvenir cup that has a lid (you cant spill it, even if you kick it over).
Great space! They definitely always have great speakers and offer something different in the city.
Ive worked 3 very pleasant, informative events at this location. Great staff, great venue!
Came here for an improv show. Very nice venue. There are several entrances. Seating is in rows of pews. The sound wasnt great for this particular show, Im not Id the microphones were very low or if its was the acoustics.
Gorgeous historic synagogue hosting book talks and lectures for very reasonable prices. Great venue, although the pews are quite uncomfortable after a while.
I went to the synagogue for a book talk. The facility was clean, the staff was friendly, and they helped facilitate the evening very well. The only downside is it is difficult to see the main stage from several areas of the venue.
Acoustics are good enjoying Ms. Chelsey Green and The Green Project. My first time here but would definitely return. Intimate setting for a jazz band
Nice venue but staff (security mainly) is rude and overly protective of the guest artists. Wont be going back here again.
This place is beautiful and their programming is excellent! (Though the benches are squeaky and not the most comfortable!) Ive seen so many excellent speakers here -- Madeleine Albright, John Kerry, Ani DiFranco, Amanda Palmer, and many more!
I have attended several author talks for newly published books. Its intimate and well organized. Beautiful venue.
The Sixth and I Historic synagogue has a very inspiring Jewish Friday night service every Friday night if the month. It is a very welcoming synagogue for everyone. There is no membership at this synagogue and Sabbath services are free.
I saw Laura Downes and Rhiannon Giddens here. The venue is beautiful and majestic. The bar and food service could be better.
Great venue for an intimate concert
Saw Kimbra here. It was a great close and personal space, the soundstage quality was excellent. The only gripe is that the railing in the front row on the second floor balconies obstructs the area right where a singers head tends to be.
Great venue, saw a live show of one of my favorite podcasts here, and it was pretty much the best venue to counterpoint the silliness of the pod
Really enjoyed the concert.
Fantastic acoustics, beautiful venue
Nice venue. Helps to have Gary Gulman at his best there. Solid gold. I will be back for other events.
Fantastic space! Not only is the history great, but the events there are always top-notch. Ive been a few times and they host a wonderful series of speakers, authors, and other events in addition to religious ones. The building itself is gorgeous (especially the stained glass windows) and its fun to have a tour. I encourage everyone to visit Sixth and I even once.
Very nice and well ran event. The building is beautiful too.
Such a great venue and beautiful synagogue!
Giving them a four because one glass of wine cost nine dollars and one beer is also nine dollars ( I don’t go out much but that’s seems crazy since I can’t get a bottle of wine for $14.99) however they give you them in these really cool sippy cups so all the adults are walking around with sippy cups which was really funny to see. The venue is breathtaking never seen anything like it! The sound amazing it’s not like a concert where you feel like you need earplugs. Everyone who was working there was super friendly and very nice. I’d go back and see a show their any chance I get!
The pews in the auditorium make for uncomfortable seats, and often the room noisy because of all the hard surfaces in the room; but generally, this is a good place to hear music. Sight lines are not great from all seats, though, especially in the side balconies, and sound is altered for the seats under the large balconies. Also, while WPAS only sells general admission tickets, the organization often reserves most of the best seats in the hall for its VIPs, leaving very few of the best seats available to GA ticket holders for WPAS events. So, one must arrive absurdly early, if one wants to snag a good seat for WPAS events at 6th and I.
One 9f my favorite places in all of DC. I enjoy Jewish services and activities there, but its much more than a place just for the Jewish community. Some of my favorite book talks have been there, as well as comedy shows. 6th and I is a great place for entertainment that is very reasonably priced so it should be on anyones list of places to go
Had a great time watching Bob Saget here.
Beautiful space in an historic building. No elevator
I loved the building. I went to hear Nate Dimeo (of The Memory Palace) perform and really enjoyed the show and the facilities! Make sure you dont get a seat behind a pillar if you want to see!
To Martin Luther King celebration. It was great and the fellowship was off the chain.
Beautiful unique venue. Note: seating is church pews
A beautiful venue for special events, this historic house of worship feels warm and inviting. I have been there several times for book signings and lectures.
Wonderful venue.
Shabbat, Pure and Simple is a wonderful, welcoming experience.
A wonderful venue for the community to discuss interesting issues of the day. Always worth it.
My singing group put on a musical event here. Great venue for a 500 seat performance.
Great events, good mix of service options, excellent location. Sign up for their newsletter!
The people are very nice they are very friendly
This place isnt just a synagogue; there are all types of events going on all the time. Ive been here for concerts, comedians, book signings and DC Tech Meetup. The dome is beautiful. The pew seating is comfortable but get there early as there are some seats obstructed by poles or equipment. They serve drinks in the basement for some events.
Great venue with excellent programming. Also serves as a synagogue, but not only.
Gorgeous.I saw Allen Stone there back in 2017 and the entire experience was just gorgeous. Little cramped, seats make enough noise to almost disturb your groove.
Beautiful place
This is one of the most interesting and nicer venues in DC. It was great to see Andra Day perform here.
Hbe
Great venue offering interesting speakers and events in smaller rooms, all in a beautiful building. The 930 club of small room speaking tours in DC.
Excellent book tour venue
Wonderful event space. Lovely historic architecture. The staff is kind, quick, and on top of things that need to be done (ushering, taking care of hiccups, and all those kind of profesionnal things)
Beautiful place.
Beautiful location. Great people.
Cool old synagogue in the heart of DC. They are non-denomination so each week they change up the services. So make sure to check the calendar because if you want to go to a reformed service and it is the orthodox week or vice versa then you might be a little confused.
Great place! Chelsey Green is awesome!
A great synagogue with many different activities and dinners to go to.
Most fun Ive ever had at Temple.
