Hilltop is the worst YMCA in South Hampton Roads. The workout area is very small and cramped and you constantly are being run over by the elderly crowd. Seriously - if you are over 10 or under 55, you do not belong. The Stay and Play area is tiny with very few toys, and no space for older children is available. You have to drop your 10 year old off to a room filled with new walkers and infants OR your baby off in a room filled with energetic tweens who are very bored. The staff is sweet and seem to make lemonade out of lemons, but it appears overwhelming to fill up a room with so many ages. All in all, I don’t feel comfortable leaving my kids there. The basketball gym is decent, but it is often overrun with children from the After-School program, or old folks playing games, making its use limited. Again, if you are over 10 or under 55, this isn’t your space. It is decently clean and well kept. The pool is nice and usually available for swimming without a crowd. The spin classes are inviting and fun. Group exercise classes are a hit or miss. The vibe of this YMCA is business-like rather than family-friendly. Feels like the management and front desk are out to make a buck, and once they’ve got it they are no longer interested.Mount Trashmore and Princess Anne are the way to go.
I received a warm welcome on my first visit. Mallory is a fun Zumba instructor and I had a great time. I recommend giving them a try.
Facility is clean enough but children’s stay n play area is unsatisfactory. Parents pay membership fees for their children and this facility cannot compare to others in the area, which I feel is unfair to the littlest members of the Y. The room is much too small and crowded and the staff I’ve encountered both times I’ve taken my child were outright rude and disinterested. I witnessed a child open the flimsy gate and attempt to escape twice in the three minutes it took me to drop off my child. There are also no name tags for children like there are in other Ys in the area. I would love if this facility could get its childcare up to par with the others in the area, if not with the size then with the attentiveness and attitude of the staff.
I love me some Hilltop YMCA. Been a member 10years plus. My home away from home. Everyone is so helpful in helping you reach your goals and to a more healthy lifestyle. Members of the YMCA are truly like a small family, we motivate each other.
I love this Y because it’s efficiently small and clean. There’s just enough space and equipment to get a good workout in and the staff is always super friendly!
Joined nine months ago. Staff are always friendly and engaging. It is inspiring to see how well they work with people with disabilities and provide a sense of community. Not a glitzy fashion gym but well equipped. My wife has enjoyed the yoga classes and we dont use the spin cycle room or the pool but we enjoy the saunas. Crazy as it seems, I am motivated by the Activtrax T shirt awards system. Good price point for a family and the dues help the community as well as provide service.
This YMCA is a fantastic workout environment. Their staff is friendly and helpful and their pool is a welcome relief for us swimmers who cannot venture into the cold in the late Fall and winter months. Plus there are classes and one-on-one training is available. To me the value is exceptional.
I Go here during the Summer for summer camp and I love it there! The staff are nice and know how to manage everyone. Not to mention we have tons of fun.
Sent my kindergartner & 1st grader here for before and after school care. There were discipline problems with other kids treating my children poorly. It was brought to the attention of the directors numerous times and not handled. There are no consequences for the actions of children who bully and spit in the faces of other children. All they will do is talk to their parents. We were forced to find another daycare so that our children could be safe. Do not let your children go here. The adage you get what you pay for definitely rings true.
Extremely disappointed with their swim lessons. First class was canceled because instructor was unavailable but was told they dont do make-ups (unless you sign up for another session - then they discount one lesson.) Then when we finally did have class the instructor had no roster, so sorting out admin took 10 minutes (of a 30 minute lesson). Too many students for one instructor - no quality time with any one student. Next, this was a preschool class, meant for 3-5 year olds, but an 8 and 10 year old were allowed in, distracting the teacher. Instructor was not good with young children, but probably because she was distracted and frazzled with too many kids of differing skill sets and ages. Pool is also all wrong for preschool-age students. This is a lane swim/swim team pool only; theres no adequate shallow area for small children to get out energy while waiting for their turn with teacher. Finally? The Great Neck rec center has longer classes (40 minutes) for a lower price ($50/session vs $70) in a bigger pool with better locker room and overall facilities. So sorry I wasted money and time on this place.
A great place for children and a low keyed environment for adults to exercise. Reid is a great personal trainer for myself (75 ) and my wife ( much younger )
Have only ever been here for Parents Nights Out which are great due to location and schedule. Definitely not one of the newer facilities and the program isnt as strong as some of the other Ys (no food offerend and they just plop them in front of a movie for the last couple hours), but enjoy that it is an option and will use it again.
Great Location! Near my Work. New equipment every once in a while. Huge pool. Friendly staff always talks with me. I have burnt a lot of calories here! Plus I can use my membership at other YMCAs in the area. I am a happy fan.
You get what you pay for in child care! YMCA has excellent staff in child care and keep the children happy and well taken care of. They plan so many activities... LE
My family and I have been attending the Y for almost 3 years now. Its a great environment, and my children absolutely LOVE it. I joined so my son could go to the preschool program, and my daughter the before/after school program. . He learned so much, so quickly! He even learned how to swim! My husband and I work out there now, and my children attend the after school program. The YMCA is definitely not the cheapest daycare provider in the area. However, its worth every penny! Compared to the REC and other programs... the Y surpasses them all.
Worst experience my child has ever gone through. Instructors would always report everything he does wrong even if it was something as small and forgetting to cover his mouth when he coughed. No positive reinforcement for my son at all and you would expect some from a Christian foundation. The gym was run down and play area too small to accommodate so many kids. The only activities they offered during summer was field trips to tropical smoothie or two stores down to the paint a cup place, playing in the gym, back parking lot or small play area. If they had to cancel an event you paid for, they kept your money anyway. Very hard to find parking and if you were lucky enough to find somewhere, someone would park behind you to run in and get their kid so you had to wait for them before you could leave. Eventually there was an event between my kid an another and was told he could let him come back until two days later. The other kid didnt get punished at all and was just as equally at guilt. On the day he was allowed to return, my son was waiting at the school for the ymca bus, my wife and I were at work. We got a call from the school that the ymca wasnt allowing him on the bus and we need to come get him. The school kept him there without any charge or punishment because they were mad at the y too and I had to leave work, missing the rest of the day of pay to have to stay home with him. I called the y and asked why they refused him to go and they flat out lied to me telling me he couldnt return until he had a note from so and so and was re-approved to return, which was completely contradictory to what I was told two days prior. They also told me that no one had told me he could come back two days later and Im making that up. I was out $40 in pay, had to find somewhere for him to go after school (being that there was no way I was jumping through their hoops for him to return) all because I was lied to and because they obviously didnt like my son in the first place. Hes somewhere else and much happier, the heck with the ymca hilltop.
Staff is incredibly friendly. Super place to grab a workout!
The place is filthy, abusive w/ children, sloppy, greedy, has no snacks, AND MORE! You should call yourself a bad influence! Also... I am so, so, so, so, so, so, U P S E T!
Great family activities
Terrible place WAY OVER PRICED!
