Ive heard great things about this rec center! New to the area so I cant wait to join soon. The facility is quite nice and the location perfect for my commutes. I will absolutely update this review once I have the chance to take advantage of the fitness classes and equipment.

I had an awful experience after sending my kid here for swimming classes. The class was hardly for 7 days and there were 4 different trainers during these days.i have seen new trainers coming in each week and without any clues where to begin with, they start with basic and most of the time it was just ring throw and playing around. No lessons or swimming, and at the final day the original trainer will come back and decide that students have to repeat their levels. She never had time or patience for students or even time to communicate with parents. Then why do you have her handle the training?i did tell this to the supervisor, but no use.I havent seen this happening in any other rec centre in VA beach, and would advise any parents who looking for swimming lessons for kids to stay away from this centre.Next about the facility, its too small.Bathrooms are too small and there is only one private bathing/changing room.So if you decide to take your kid for a bath, you may have to take them to adult showering room, where adults may be bathing nude.Absolutely not kid friendly rec Center, should be out of the swimming lessons for kids.Pool area is setup in the front visiting area, you will have to bare their yelling all the time while you wait for classes.Absolutely thoughtless design.

I dont have a membership but I go often to this establishment to play basketball. The gym is great and the overall facility is wonderful. The pool is nice and so are the work out areas. Non-residents dont have to pay an arm and a leg for memberships either. Day passes are a little bit much though. But its not that bad still.

I really enjoy this rec center. It is clean, the people working there have always been helpful and nice. I love that they have separate areas for individual types of workouts, indoor heated pool and lots of classes to take if you like group exercise. My favorite rec center in Virginia beach!

Seriously cheap for residents. Im paying 14$ per month. Good facilities, never too crowded. I feel the staff is very pleasant as opposed to other reviews. Do you expect to be waited on? These people arent working for tips you know.

I have been coming here since I was 10 years old. The place has the best facility for pool lanes. Weight room is old school and far enough for anyone to jump in and get a good workout. My favorite place to go.

If you are a swimmer, the pool is great. Its big and has a lot of lanes for lap swimming. The water is very clear and the temp seems to average in the 77-80F range. There are no fancy play areas, but there is a diving board. The mens locker is standard fare and clean albeit a bit dated. The lockers require a quarter and you carry the key. There are no provisions to bring your own lock. The shower is an open room, so no private stalls here. I didnt ask my wife what type of showers they have in the womens locker. I havent had to use any of the other facilities and services, so I cant comment on those (hence the 4 stars)

PROS: Huge indoor pool, very nice area for the kids to play, swimming lessons offered cheaply, membership is cheap. Summer camp here is great for kids; field trips twice a week and pool time 3 days a week.CONS: Workout area is small. Sometimes its like you have to take a number just to use a machine. They need to get rid of a fitness room or something and add more workout machines instead, or take down how partitioned off each room is. Workout equipment needs improvement. The bar for the lat pulldown doesnt even have padding. Often when people want to use the bar or smith machine for squats, they put a cushion on the bar so it doest cut into their shoulders. There is only one of those pads and its not even a good one. They need to get one of the foam ones. Group swimming lessons have too many students. They should limit it to 5 per instructor. Right now, there are 8 kids being taught by one instructor in my kids lessons. The game room where the kids can go play while the parents work out is on a different schedule than the gym. Often it isnt open when you want to go work out, and thus, your kid has no place to go. The hours this facility is open is too restrictive. I would prefer to see a 5am to 10pm schedule with the game room closing at 9pm instead of 8pm for parents who can only go to the gym after they get off work. The lockers cost a quarter every time you use them and thats the most ridiculous thing Ive ever heard of. But guess what? Nobody ever pays for them anyway. The showers are touch or press-timed, which is annoying as heck. You touch a spot, the shower turns on for about one minute, then turns back off. But some of the touch spots dont work that well, so you can be touching the spot repeatedly about 20 times before the shower turns back on. Yes, this means you cant control the temperature of the water coming out, either. This will bother some people, but I find the water temperature is just as hot as I would set it if I were able to anyway.Lastly, I would like to see more activities offered to the kids that us parents can pay for. Right now, I think there is an art class and a martial arts class for 8 and above and thats it. I would totally pay for my child to attend classes while being watched at the center if they offered more. I like the martial arts classes, would prefer the minimum age be lowered. Would like to see pottery classes for kids, archery classes, science classes, LEGO engineering classes where kids can build projects, that sort of thing...
