This exhibit was fascinating! Our guide and all the staff was friendly and provided an excellent overview of the history of the business and the community. I look forward to returning to support. If you are in the area, you should definitely go, see, and learn! A beautiful display of history. Pinpoint is the last active Gullah-Geechee community in Georgia, go and check the museum out!
Guided tour of the factory was given by the kindest and most enthusiastic people I have met in recent memory. Willing to answer questions about the community at length and give you a feel of the insular community around Pin Point. Very well done museum.
What a cool place! Very interesting to learn about the Gullah/Geechee history and present. The guides could not have been more friendly and engaging. Educational and fascinating.
Great customer service and an awesome experience! We arrived 25 minutes before the museum closed and they were still kind enough to give us a mini-tour and allowed us to explore the grounds until almost 5:30 (closing is 5:30 pm). It is a great learning experience for adults and children alike.
It was very informative. I highly recommend taking the guided tour.
When visiting Savannah be sure to visit this historical site. This is a hidden gem!
This museum is not to be missed if you’re coming to the area. It’s a beautiful tribute to the lives of the Gullah Geechee people who have lived here for generations and their culture, and is both inspirational and informative. Be sure to stop here when you visit Savannah or Skidaway Island!
Very interesting history and the guide has a personal connection.
We loved this place!! Learned a lot and loved loved loved the movie. Beautiful well done and the people were so great. Will have to go back!!
Awesome museum, very interesting to see the history. Well work the time to visit
Museum explains in great detail the history of the town and the movement to keep it family owned. Tour guide was very informative and learning about the process of shucking oysters and crab fishing was enlightening.
This is an interesting place to learn about coastal culture, not to mention the beautiful scenery. Not well known on the tourist list, but you will not be disappointed
Friendly staff and great information.
Definitely a great place to visit in Savannah!! History!!
A piece of American history. Not to be missed if youre in the area
Excellent site! We had a lovely visit learning about the Gullah/ Geechee heritage and industry at Pin Point.
This museum preserves the story of the Savannah Pin Point Community and the former A.S. Varn and Son Oyster and Crab factory. Founded in 1890, Pin Point became a self-sustaining community for Freedman from the 1890s until the factory closing in 1985.The tour guides are former or current residents/employees of Pin Point and are able to provide a firsthand account of the community and factory. They also present detailed information about the various restored historic buildings on the site. A documentary in the Picking and Cooling house provides the story of the community as remembered by former residents to include Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. My favorite part of the tour was the Oyster Factory. You are able to view the beautiful marsh marsh, boats used to harvest the oysters and crabs, the building where the oysters are delivered and the shucking process. Personal stories on life in the factory are available through several multi-media presentations in the building. This is one of the lesser-known Coastal Heritage Society museums in Savannah, but definitely one that I highly recommend for both visitors and Savannah natives to visit.
A piece of history. Great tour
This place was wonderful! Great, beautiful and intelligent staff. This is a wonderful place for everyone of all ages. Its gorgeous, a clean facility, educational and fun. My husband and I cant wait to come back and bring my whole family.
My wife and I were passing through from Canada, we were truly amazed by the museum the dedication of the staff. We now have a greater appreciation of what truly makes America great... The Gullah/Geechees contribution was / is invaluable. Many thanks, will recommend to family and friends.Sharon and Pierre
Great history review
Such beautiful history! So glad we went!
Everything I had read about Pin Point suggested an hour would be enough to see it all. That would be true if you just want a quick walk through, but if you really want to get a full grasp of how special this community was and is, allow more time. There is a fairly lengthy video, plus a wonderful guided tour. To read the interpretive signs also takes time. It is all well worth allowing plenty of time. Also, dont miss seeing the eclectic decorating of the house on the right just before the parking lot. I have attached a photo taken of the backyard of that house.
Wonderful piece of history. One of the few remaining freed slave owned places that they fought hard to keep after the government went back in their word regarding the whole 40 acres and a mule debacle.
This is a must do in Savannah. It is not very well known and completely underappreciated. The place is beautiful and the tour guides are genuinely great people that lived in the area and know what theyre talking about. No made up history lesson, like they teach in schools these days.
Interesting. A nice cultural stop.
We had a really good time seeing what they have to offer. Great history about some great people.
Truly Amazing! Gail was awesome and filled with tons of information! We really appreciated this tour!
Very interesting museum. Learned a lot!! Gail was an excellent tour guide! Highly recommend.
Gorgeous views with such wonderful history!! One of the neatest museums in all of Savannah :)
What an incredible slice of history. I feel lucky to have spent time learning from this place!
Learned so much about the region and it people...lunch was very good..
I plan to go again. Can u believe theres a bible that can be purchased thats in the GeeChee language. Awe Mazing
Very enlightening tour and video presentation. Highly recommended.
Amazing museum and experience that is easy to overlook. Well worth the drive. Being able to hear first hand accounts from the people that lived in this community was truly unique experience. Guide was obviously knowledgeable as she grew up there. She did a wonderful job of engaging the people in the tour group as well as relating interesting and touching stories. Also part of the Pick 3 museum package which I felt was a great deal. I would definitely recommend anyone going to Savannah to stop by and to definitely fall in with a guide (which doesnt cost anything extra).
Fascinating history, wonderful tour guides, boyhood home of Clarence Thomas
This is one of the best tours Ive been on in a long while. Clean and well kept facility. Great tour guides! Im very happy my daughter has this in her history of visits.
Of all the places weve visited in Savannah, this has been my favorite. Take the time to go through each building and hear the stories. An amazing slice of history with beautiful marshy views. Make sure to follow the order for a complete view. We goofed up and went backwards in one, but were able to connect the dots.
Beautiful place history is amazing and even better because is told by people that were actually there. Lady super friendly and educational as well as fun. Definitely a place to visit.
This place was awesome, a real step back in History. I loved how we were greeted as soon as we stepped out of our cars. We learned so much about the Gullah Geechee heritage and it was nice to be able to touch and see and smell the exact buildings our forefathers worked in. Learning about this heritage instills a sense of pride and I would truly recommend everyone to pay a visit to this jewel.
Im a natural-born citizen of the United States of America. I love this country. I love to learn and experience everything I can about this country. Pin Point is a large part of this countrys history. It is even the hometown of one of our Supreme Court Justices. We found Pin Point because of my curiosity. We saw a small sign that said Pin Point Heritage Museum, and I turned down the narrow street. One of the best turns Ive made in my life. I had made the statement to my wife only about 3 hours earlier: One day I am going to visit a Gullah/Geechee community. Never dreamed this would be the day. We were greeted and escorted by a native of the community and treated like honored guests. We had arrived late in the day so did not see and experience everything there, but did see the documentary film and one of the buildings. We will be back in a couple of weeks to finish the tour. I absorb a historical area when I visit so I expect to spend another 3 hours or so on top of the hour and a half Ive already spent there. You could probably take in the whole site in one hour but you would miss the full value of the place and its history if you rushed through in such a short time. Take your time, look, read, ask questions, listen to the staff, they want to share everything with you. Then stop and listen to the site itself. There are voices there that will speak to your heart and add richness to your experience and increase your love for America!
What a wonderful and educational experience! Pin Points history, heritage and culture need to be shared.
Great history lessons to be learned here along with nice, serene views of the marsh.
For us this was the Highlight of our visit. The story is uplifting and timeless. The staff was wonderful and we enjoyed talking to Bacon. The movie thatthey show at the beginning is extremely well done and important to yourexperience.
Worth the trip. Fantastic glimpse in the past. I pray the area and people are able to continue to maintain their land and culture on this sacred land.
A hidden gem on Skidaway Island Georgia! The guides give a very detailed account on the history of the Gullah Geechee people and how they lived and worked in the Pin Point community. I recommend watching the video first, then do the tour. Overall we had a great experience there, the guides we happy to answer any and all questions and were very friendly.
This is a great learning place of when people would work hard in a company and community to make a great place to live. I have gone twice and will go back.
An incredible experience that every Savannah resident should be required to have! The story of the people of Pinpoint is beautiful and so well illustrated through the museum. I would recommend to absolutely anybody.
A wonderful piece of historic information. A great place to visit...!!!
Interesting to see and read about. Factories like this existed in many places along the east coast. Being from NJ it was interesting to learn that they harvested oysters and crab in a similar way. Admission is $8 per person. The staff was excellent and very friendly.
Great history of Gullah Geechee heritage that needs to be known
Such a great tour of rich Gullah/GeeChee heritage. Absolutely loved it. Wish we could have spent more time there!
Loved this place. Presentation excellent. A window into our great American history.
This is a wonderful and welcoming place to visit. So interesting and heart warming to learn of how this community worked and worshipped and trusted God together. Wonderful learning experience for all. The staff is very kind and genuine. Loved it! Extremely reasonable in price as well!
A intriguing look into the Gullah community on Georgia Coast.
Awesome off the beaten path museum. Clarence Thomas lived here as a child and his mother worked here. One of the highlights of our trip.
Gail was our guide and she is terrific!
Absolutely amazing experience!! Stunning views, super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Fascinating documentary, and very interesting, informative, and hands on guided tour. Learning about the history of Pin Point was fascinating. They also have AC and clean restrooms! We will be back for sure! Thank you for such a great visit!!
This museum was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Savannah! Our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Both my granddaughters (ages 3 & 5) and myself enjoyed our time here!
This was really amazing! Definitely worth the visit.
Ashley and Val were amazing!!! It was a wonderful experience to learn the Gullah geechee history. You can tell they are very passionate, proud, and knowledgeable about their roots and history. This is must go-to spot if you’re visiting Savannah.
Thoughtful way to get out of Savannah and witness the stories of the Gullah Geechee community. If ghost tours and sanitized history dont interest, this will be a gem. Just a travel tip - the cost of a round trip Uber might be the same as renting a car for the day.
Very friendly staff...beautiful views!
My husband and I visited this museum upon recommendation from the host at a bed and breakfast we stayed at in downtown Savannah. Herman our greeter, and Gail, our guide made us feel very welcome. My husband and I were absolutely in awe of the history of Pinpoint. As our guide taught us words from the Gechee/Gullah language, to our surprise, we discovered my husbands family speaks very similar, and uses some of the same words! I have been inspired to dig deeper into our family history to see what we find out! As the stories unfolded, we felt so many positive emotions surrounding our own upbringing as we watched the documentary and toured the different buildings learning about the strength and resiliency of the people of Pinpoint. I wasnt expecting to have such an experience, but Im so glad we did. I highly recommend visiting here!
OMG. This place was awesome. Its a small historical site and its beautiful! The staff was great and it was the highlight of my parents trip to visit us. (Aside from the grandchildren of course...) We have lived in this area for 12 years and never heard of it befoew. We WILL be back!
A must see if you’re in the Savannah area. Our tour guide was very informative. Loved learning the history of how it all began.
We visited pinpoint a couple months ago when we were in Savannah. Its a great museum. The history Is fascinating, the docents knowledgeable, and the gift shop had some really cool and unusual items. I highly recommend this place.

We had a wonderful experience at the Pin Point museum. Theres so much to be learned here about the resilience of this community. I hope it remains for years to come.
Incredible history and phenomenal story tellers! Must see/ visit!!!
I did not know anything about this place but Im glad we visited. Learned a lot about the African Americans who settled there, their hardwork, especially the women who picked the meat of the crab and who also shucked oysters. Also the men who lived there and built anything from whatever is available in the area.
The people! The history! The culture!
I love the museum, my grandparents are the ones that used to own it until they had it turned into a museum. It is a great place to learn about the community and history of PinPoint and the birth place of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
Lived here all my life and never knew about this community. The tour was fascinating and guide was a life-long resident of this community. Recommend this for natives and visitors alike!
Great museum that shows some great history of Savannah area!
Love it,very interesting.
Went with a group. We learned a lot! It was a great educational experience.
Very informative, I think this moved me the most of all the things I visited in Savannah. How a whole community worked together. Make time for this on your visiting schedule .
Learned a lot from some very engaging folks.
Stumbled upon this place while driving through the marsh on a weekend trip to Savannah. Pin Point was certainly the highlight of the entire trip. The documentary shown at the museum was captivating, as was the tour, which was led by one of the documentarys central figures. I am so glad to have come across this place, and I will forever be moved by its history.
The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. My family enjoyed the visit!
Engaging, knowledgeable staff. Good learning experience. Interesting for adults as well as children.
