The historical vibrance and the aesthetic detail in the architecture, the beautifully roses and the labyrinth to the left of the entrance are three of its aspects I appreciate. The one saint and really only one I have been fascinated by is St. Francis with his love of animals and the natural world. This is a cathedral worth preserving to say the least. Enjoy.
A beautiful cathedral basilica, but that’s about it. The tabernacle is way off to the side, hidden, in its own room. The whole environment in and around the cathedral basilica is disturbing; the very progressive and New Age culture of Santa Fe has infiltrated the beauty of this place. Finally, the paranoia regarding COVID is as obvious as daylight. **If you’re a faithful Catholic visiting, I highly recommend that you DO NOT go to Mass here.**I could say a few words about the priest (presumably the rector of the church) and the gentlemen who were the lectors/extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, but this is a review of the cathedral basilica.
As of Wednesday, Oct 7th it is only open Saturday and Sunday for mass. The architecture is beautiful from the outside. Amazing details. Im sure the inside is more grand! I wish it was open for public. There were a lot of people outside. Socially distancing from each other and wearing mask. It reminds me so much of the cathedral my famity and I went to growing up.
Beautiful Cathedral. We were able to see the inside but not able to attend mass due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Stunning cathedral! The craftsmanship that went into building this piece of art is truly something amazing! The church itself is a staple to Santa Fe, If you come to visit SF, it is a MUST SEE attraction. The gift shop also has a lot of really beautiful items. Also, I side the cathedral itself tucked behind the grand piano is a little shrine as well as some relics that will leave you in awe when reading where some of them came from!!
Cool brick maze to the left when facing the front of church. Please help truth and goodness win in this country again. The people in power now are doing the exact opposite of WWJD.
Went to mass yesterday and the doors were locked, and no one outside to let people know why. Also, I do not agree that a gift shop is the first thing you walk into at the mother Church of the Archdiocese! This used to be one of the most beautiful and spiritual churches in the whole state! But now you have turned my fathers house into a marketplace!!!
What can I say about this church that hasnt already been said many times before? All I can really touch on is that my wife and I were married here. What a wondrous if somewhat strange, but in a good way, feeling to be a small part of its rich history.
The bells calling the faithful to Saturday evening mass drew us off the Plaza on 8/3/19 to come have a look. We were greeted warmly at the door and took a reverential peek before leaving to stroll the lovely grounds. A feeling of sanctuary pervaded the area. Highly recommend visiting this cathedral while in Santa Fe.
Beautiful church! Was disappointed that Google said it would be open but we were only allowed to shop and view the inside from afar. They had it roped off. Wouldve been nice to update this info online so that we wouldnt have drove down there.
The worst experience to visit. Mass time was about to start and there were to people outside taking donations and signing up everyone coming into the church, we asked if we could go in and see the church, immediately they sent us away,I am a Catholic and have never seen a church that is so not welcoming, this is the core of our faith but this was so unpleasant to see how some people profit from our faith but do not welcome people in the community. Sad.
A very amazing Basilica name St. Francis of Assisi. I had been there for my Christmas vacation. It was so amazing me, many people for 3 Masses of Christmas time: Vigil Mass with Lessons and Carol of Kids Choir, Christmas Mass at midnight started with Lessons and Carols of Adults Choir and Christmas Mass at morning date 25th December. Its just so fascinated. I was really enjoying that. People came those Masses most were visitors and they did not have enough chairs for all. Even though so crowded but they are so organized and all programs for that Feast have been very good. I hope I will go back for Easter. Thanks for all people prepared all for Christmastime. God blesses you all.
It was beautiful on the outside. We didnt get to go in for mass because of Covid but that cant really be helped. Still beautiful!
I enjoy visiting historic churches of worship. Attended mass for Corpus Christi. Beautiful cathedral. There is a display of relics at the side altar where there is a statue of Mary. It is worth it to take time to learn about this cathedral history. Grounds are beautiful and be sure to see Cathedral park.
A must visit cathedral... a must. Truly beautiful, with a grand park for kids to run around and travelers to pray and relax. Light Gregorian chants, a truly awe inspiring cathedral. I am only uploading obvious photos, the rest .... you will have to see for yourself
Its free to visit this beautiful historic church. The architecture is great to admire.
A must being around in this town. Take the time to go to the back where there are some beautiful statues.
Beautiful church! The details inside are amazing! Make sure not to miss the gardens and statues that surround the church.
Spanish colonial style beautiful church in the central of Santa Fe city.
I visited Santa Fe for the very first time in November of 2018 and was surprised with how beautiful the many churches are. Cathedral Basilica did not disappoint. The architecture fit well with the adobe style of the surrounding buildings. I especially enjoyed the view from the front with the large pine tree. Ill definitely be back again to visit in the future.
Nice gift shop and sometimes live Mariachi music on the front step.
Confessions have been all but eliminated! They are only hearing them once a month on a Friday when people are at work. Do the priests no longer believe in the Sacrament?
Very beautiful and the design for the time it was made is very extraordinary. Walking in you can picture how it would have been. Still looks as good as when it was made. Very small but so much more impressive and an important marker in the times of the mixed western culture. Outside noise is completely gone upon entering the unbelievably detailed interior. Very peaceful.
It was a cold windy day ..Cathedral was beautiful inside out..great experience..
Beautiful Cathedral inside and out. Bright and fresh feeling inside given its age/style.
I got so much love for this town, nothing like it in the world... amazing things like this. It’s worth going. If anyone is going and wants some ideas where you can go? Let me know I’ll give you some ideas to have an amazing experience..
Very beautiful church with a lot of great architecture. It also has many beautiful stain glass windows.
Went to mass there. Beautiful Church, everyone who spoke was elequent.
A place to meditate and enjoy the serenity of this mediation garden of St Francis of Assisi in downtown Santa Fe. It is on the side of the cathedral building.
A very beautiful basilica. And the staff was very knowledgeable and happy to offer information.
When I visited the famous Cathedral, there was an ongoing mass. No one was allowed to enter the front door, unless you are willing to join the Eucharistic celebration. The people manning the door were strict on this no-entry-during-mass policy to avoid disturbing the faithfuls who were there solely for prayer. If you only want to enter the church to take photos and check out the interiors, be aware of the mass schedule. It is an old cathedral, built in 1886. With a 400-year-old history, it is one of the longest established Christian congregations in the USA. It has been attracting visitors in the city because of its beautiful Romanesque architecture. It may not be as breathtaking as the European churches I’ve visited, however, the church is still uplifting.
Gorgeous cathedral! Although Im not religious, I love to see history and beautiful architecture!
A beautiful cathedral filled with history and a great place of worship.
An iconic place in Santa fe close to the plaza, we love the garden very peaceful
Beautiful place! Got lost inside looking at the paints and sculptures
The cathedral is beautiful any time of the year but holiday decorations made it even more so. The Desert Chorale concert was wonderful, a lot of Celtic music and some traditional carols. What a treat! The only negative is getting to restrooms if you need them because you have to go outside and walk around the side.
Stunning minor Basilica in the heart of Santa Dr, on the Old Santa Dr Trail. Beautiful stained glass, painted Stations of the Cross, and ornate altars. The collection of 1st class and other relics is outstanding. Photos welcome (no flash, please). Large, enclosed Chapel to the right of the main altar, where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved and people can pray in quiet.
Spectacular building. Beautiful stained glass from France. Oldest statue of Mary in North America.
Beautiful Cathedral! A must see if youre in Santa Fe, very spiritual. Check out the maze in the front courtyard, it takes a while to navigate but its very fun!
Must see if you love old churches.
It was closed due to the pandemic. I like the artwork outside. Eager to go back when they open again.
Beautiful cathedral that towers over its section of Santa Fe. You can see it from quite a ways down the street, but once inside its the polar opposite of the bustling city - calm and serene. Come in, absorb the astounding architecture, and leave feeling rejuvenated and ready to get back to exploring.
Beautiful Church. Great choir.
The cathedral is just so beautiful and peaceful. I love to visit the garden also!
The greeter was very informative and provided a walking tour brochure, which was very helpful. There is much to see and admire, so plan a long visit to read about each historical item. The architecture and stained glass is breathtaking. Catholic or not, this is a must-see for anyone visiting Santa Fe.
Beautiful minor basilica that really complements the historic Santa Fe town square. Although it is not nearly as old as some of the historic buildings, it blends in well. Beautiful church.
Beautiful church! A gentleman welcomed us upon entering the church. He shared some history of the the area. Nice people.
Beautiful but comercialized (gift shops)
Beautiful cathedral. Very well kept with a good feeling inside of the work done by many artisans over a 100 years ago. The Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi is definitely a must when visiting Santa Fe.
Beautiful historic district. Too bad it snowed.
Beautiful church in old town Santa Fe. Been coming here for years . anytime I hit the plaza its a must on my to do list. Mass is a good place to soak up some spiritual healing and New Mexico culture.
Historic, well cared for and exceptionally beautiful. Catholic or not, you can appreciate this amazing structure.
Beautiful architecture
An amazing building that integrates centuries of art and tradition into reverent beauty.
Beautiful details inside and very unique painting that resembles Navajo patterns. Not to be missed.
Do NOT visit on a Sunday not only will there be a ton of people attending mass but you will be rushed by the ushers to exit quickly. A beautiful church but be prepared for a million tourists. If you go for photos beware that you may not get exactly what ya want. Parking is always harder on Sunday as well due to the masses.
One can feel the history as you walk around the place. I’ve been to hundreds of churches attend the world and this is certainly in the top 10. Go in the late afternoon if you can so you can see the cut stained glass play with the sun light on the walls.
This House of Worship is a beautiful and inspiring edifice and a respite for reflection.
Forced religion upon natives was the cause of a lot of death and resentment. These are beautiful buildings, yes but at what cost? never forget!
This is such a beautiful and relaxing meditation garden.
A very beautiful cathedral dedicated to a wonderful saint...Francis. well worth a stop if in Santa Fe.
Beautiful church, a beautiful place full of peace and within the City of Santa Fe New Mexico
Went here on November 23, 2019. we heard about a service and my friends and i were interested. none of us are religious, but we had started considering. we went into the cathedral and sat for about 20 minutes of the service. as we were concentrating on the service, my friend, Grace, got a message that her mom had been emitted to the hospital. of course, we were all in shock and wanted to to make sure everything was okay. the doors were already open, so we decided it would be a good time to leave. as we were leaving, a man working there said that we were being disrespectful and we weren’t welcome at the church. we tried to explain the situation, but he just grew angrier. as people considering this religion, we are now very turned off. if zero stars was an option, that’s what i would have given it.
Visited our Cathedral Basilica of St Francis of Assisi for the annual Christmas carols and concert. Really loved the younger singers. What a beautiful evening we enjoy every year.
We stopped in today on our way back from Albuquerque to Denver. This is one of the most beautiful & historical churches in the US that I have ever seen. We are not Catholic but its so peaceful & serene thst I actually teared up from its majestic beauty.
Peaceful place in the beautiful santa fe plaza. You can park in the hotel right in front of it. It is a valet parking with first hour free.
Amazing! Dont pay to go to the staircase church. This one is real and so much better!
Its been blessed!87
I love our Cathedral, but absolutely hate that theyve turned the entrance to this most sacred and holy place into a shop! You have turned my Fathers house into a market place!!! Ugh
Stunning architecture. Excellent docents with exceptional knowledge of the historyof the church and area
Amazing history, and great staff. Definitly a place to visit.
Absolutely beautiful cathedral. They allow visitors to walk inside and take a look, which I greatly appreciated. A definite must see in Santa Fe.
Okay, no parking also you can not get inside the cathedral.
Absolutely beautiful ️ the stained glass windows are stunning ️
A beautiful church with lots of history and religion at the forefront. Bones of the saints were on exhibit and they had multiple rooms for private prayer as well as confessions. There is even a gift shop, and they also take donations.
Beautiful taking your breath away
The Cathedral is a very peaceful and has a nice history as well. Inside and out it is a nice place to visit if you are in New Mexico. The staff was friendly and helpful by answering questions. I like the words on the fence, DIOS DA Y DIOS QUITA in English is GOD GIVES AND GOD TAKES
If you decide to stop here make sure to check out the labyrinth in front.
Very disappointed that will all the space and resources this community has, daily mass is still not being offered to the public.
Words cannot describe this beautiful and holy place!Take your time to go through and experience the presence of Our Precious Lord, Our Mother, the Saints and the multitude of history here! Most people just wonder through without knowing the how awesome the history this beautiful church holds! To the the left of the altar are many relics dating back quite some time!We were with someone who really knew their church history! I have seen others talk about someone who works here who can tell you about this!Take some time to pray and meditate while here!My teenage son pointed out the labyrinth at the top of the stairs of the Cathedral before you go into the church. I had no idea that there was church history with this, I thought it was just in his sci-fi movies, but it explains it on a plaque.I agree with others that this has a lot more historical history than the Chapel which charges to go in and is packed full of tourists. They play an overhead audio history that is played over and over, but hard to understand due to the large number of people coming and going and it echoing off the sides of the chapel. The Chapel is worth seeing too, just don’t skip over the Cathedral! Most likely you will be walking around a lot, so if it is warm or hot out, take water, walking shoes and maybe and umbrella for shade. There are plenty of shops to go in and out of full of local culture with plenty authentic places to eat. (Expect to spend at least $12 for a meal)You could also take a small backpack with food, drinks and a small blanket and have lunch on the grounds surrounding the Cathedral if I remember right. As for parking, I think they have Cathedral parking behind the Cathedral. We had stayed in a wonderful hotel just behind to the SE of the Cathedral and they allowed us to park in their restaurant parking during the day.If you can make Mass absolutely do so, but also take the extra time to get to know the history of this beautiful Cathedral!
This is a very nice and well maintained Catholic Church and I would strongly recommend visiting it. If you have to choose between Loretto Chapel and the basilica, chose the basilica. It is still a church and much more impressive from an architectural perspective.
As Protestants worshipping on a family vacation, we were greatly moved by the beauty of the worship, the hospitality of fellow worshippers, and the personable homily given by the preaching priest encouraging all present on the Feast of the Holy Family. Glory to God in the highest!
Beautiful architecture and friendly parishioners. We went to Saturday Mass. It was a beautiful Mass. Wonderful music and childrens choir. Its a must visit for all religious afiliations. Very welcoming.
Beautiful, rich history and Catholic faith. I was taken back in time, all volunteers were helpful, and they had a very nice gift shop.
Its a church with nice stained glass, Im not a religious person so its just ok to me
Recommend everyone interested in religious sight seeing and travel take the time to visit, beautiful church.
Very nice cathedral, great staindglass windows.
Located in a very scenic part of the city, this Cathedral is a very beautiful structure that adds a lot of character to downtown. A must see if you are visiting the area.
My husband and I spent time touring the lovely grounds, the inside of this cathedral is a place of Godly reverence and beauty. We spent time talking to a docent and enjoyed learning about the history of this beautiful Cathedral!
I feel at peace when I visit Our Virgin Mothers chapel
Loved visiting the cathedral with our kids. The sanctuary is so beautiful. I especially like the stations of the cross and the Blessed Sacrament chapel. We also spent time out on the grounds and walked the stations of the cross. The gift shop has a great selection of books and decor. The manager was so helpful!
Not huge but cute and well looked after. The font and the door were highlights.
Another person shared about how rude a helper of the church was and I believe it because I had the same hateful man approached me while after getting Communion.See I went to sit at the front so I could be blessed by the priest since I cant have bread because I have only been baptised so I cross my arms so the priest can bless me and thats what I have been doing since I was little. But I had just went to a art show early before mass and bought a painting of the Loretto Chapel and was carrying it since I had walked that morning to go to church and I didnt want to leave it in my seat while I walked up to get blessed by the priest and because I changed the row that I was in to get blessed by the Father I was grabbed and thrown out by a man that helps the church and was told that I couldnt ever come back. My friend that had attended with me told the man to take his hands off of me and that she did nothing wrong. He yelled in anger and said you arent welcome at this church ever againI will never go back to this church in my life and to think my family has given to this church my whole life my Grandmother Lila Greer Koury told me I could always trust the catholic church but I dont believe this is true anymore. I was going through a ruff time and looking for guidance from the faith that I lost as a child and you let me down. I cant except organized religion and I have turned to reading my bible on my own and never ever go to this church again, and its a shame to say this since it is a part of my history as a New Mexican
Went here in March 19. The lady basically running the parish sent message of the bishop NO ONE IS TO RECEIVE ON THE TONGUE, NOT PERMITTED HERE. All old female servers, lay persons at front center of alter handling our precious Lord with their UNCONSECRATED HANDS. Priest, may God bless him, was shoved off to the left of the alter. The lack of reverence or belief by those controlling the liturgy was sickening. The poor laity seem to know better than to show their humility to the Holy Eucharist. They would be scorned. The poor angels watch this, Our Lady watched this. God watches. Why do we insist on receiving Communion standing and on the hand? Why this attitude of lack of submission to the signs of God? May no priest dare to impose his authority in this matter by refusing or mistreating those who wish to receive Communion kneeling and on the tongue. Let us come as children and humbly receive the Body of Christ on our knees and on our tongue. The saints give us the example. They are the models to be imitated that God offers us! Cardinal Sarah
Beautiful Church with a beautiful service. Great place to visit as well.
Absolutely breathtaking, Christmas chorale with the Santa Fe symphony and local.choirs. Beautiful, enjoyable. Wonderful experience
Such a beautiful church. We love the Gift shop and entire area around the block. Its nice to walk around and see the shops in the area.
