The Presidio of San Francisco was designated a National Historic Landmark on June 13, 1962. The historic district contains 662 contributing buildings and 504 noncontributing buildings. The Presidio is also California Historical Landmark 79. A commemorative marker reads:Formally established on September 17, 1776, the San Francisco Presidio has been administered successively as a military headquarters by Spain, Mexico, and the United States. A major command post during the Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the Korean War. It remains a symbol of United States authority in the Pacific.
This used to be my playground... The Presidio will always have a place in my personal history; I both lived and worked there when it was a military installation. Theres tons of history, military and otherwise, right up against the San Francisco Bay, looking out to Alcatraz Island and the beauty of Marin, etc. on the opposite shore. Plenty to see, do, and eat. GO!
Such a beautiful historical place everyone should visit in San Francisco
