It was a great decision that this parish should be designated as the National Shrine to St. Francis. A beautiful church with a lot of local history but also emphasizing for whom this great city was named. The statues and the new Porziuncula chapel are great ways to help teach the faith and promote St. Francis spirituality. I hope every Catholic who visits SF will see this church and many non-Catholics will learn about our faith through this beautiful sanctuary in the heart of a great city.
In a city named after St Francis of Assisi, a visit to the National Shrine of St Francis makes a lot of sense. It is a beautiful Church, solemn and quiet. There are several statues and altars dedicated to different saints, with a plaquet saying something about wach saint. Thus, to walk around the church can lso be educational. It is close to famed San Francisco sites such as the City Lights Bookstore, Vesuvio Cafe and the Beat Museum, so the church is easy to find.
It is a small catholic church at the corner of italian village. Just walk in because the door was open, and it takes my breath away. It is really beautiful and cozy, warming place. Later I knew that Sanfrancisco is following the name of St. Francis. This is the real heart of SAn Francisco. It is very close to the Washington Square, have unforgettable moment here.
National shrine of saint. Francis Assisi competes with other churches in SanFrancisco . Devine place in the heart of the city. Street side parking is challenging but cheap. Parking lot cost $15 to 20. Lot of restaurents near by. Small park is only one block away from the church. Best place to spend for 1 hour.
A smaller Catholic Church but very beautiful and serene with a very welcoming staff that beckonedme to come in brother although I was hardly dressed for church and hadnt shaved this morning. Nevertheless I came inside and was impressed by the rich woods and impressive glass. Other worshippers smiled at me a total stranger and I felt their compassion as I settled into a pew to say a prayer for a friend who passed recently and felt much better when I went back to the the cold cloudy street.
If you like churches this is the second oldest Catholic church.

Beautiful architecture. A school is connected to the church. George Washington Park across the street. (small but locals do tai chi and relax for lunch)
Church dedicated to San Francis of Assisi. The first church in the area and served as school, and a couple of other things. It is a very spiritual place where you can have a good talk with God
