The Mission District has beautiful art spurred all around, and Balmy Alley is a great place to take a quick walk through and admire the scenes painted all along the walls. There is beautiful story-telling shown in the art, and especially on a nice day where the sun casts down in the alley, there is no better place to go after a nice lunch up the street. I definitely recommend taking a look here and appreciating some of what the local art community has to say.
We went to an event unveil new art work. It was posted on social media. There was so many welcoming people, including artist to talk to. They had a DJ playing music as we dance. Some people offering free drinks, other selling food and drinks. It was a very lively and welcoming event and we really enjoyed the art.
I cant understand why Google delete my previous review this is street-art. Balmy Alley a place for your day pleasure. A lot of fun and arts everywhere in the street. Take picture in the street and stare with your family or Friends. Put Mission District in agenda and ho there for a fantastic picture and selfie day. Things to do in San Francisco. Unbelievable Day in Arts Paradise
This place was super close to where we were staying. Balmy Alley is lined with lush potted plants, eclectic artwork and plenty of personality. Local artists have contributed some powerful pieces to the alley, along with ones that will put a smile on your face! If youre in Mission, dont miss the lovely stroll to this special spot.
Unique and thought-provoking. It is a working alley though, so be aware of vehicles.
Wont show all my photos cause its defeat the purpose of visiting the alley for yourselves. But we uberd there with little to no issue, were able to walk the alley with barely anyone else and then walked the streets a bit, if you go down the road a bit(walk towards park turn left) and turn left again, theres a whole shopping street with a bunch more artwork along the walls if you enjoyed Balmy.
Check out local street art. Especially on a nice sunny day. Highly recommended.
Lots of fun... Some great artwork from great artists....
The street is located in the Mission District in San Francisco, California. The block long alley is the best place to see the most concentrated collection of murals in San Francisco. The murals began in the mid-80s as an expression of artists outrage over human rights and political abuses in Central America. Today the alley contains murals on a myriad of styles and subjects from human rights to local gentrification. The alley is best viewed on foot- either by yourself or on a guided tour from Precita Eyes Mural Arts.It Is a must are in SFO.
A must visit attraction for street art lovers
Such a gem of the neighborhood. It’s inspirational and heartwarming to see all the artwork and see what social issues are prevalent in the community. Must see if you are in San Francisco. There’s neighborhood parking.
Very interesting place to visit in San Francisco Mission district. You can see Murals after Murals in the alley. Makes a nice place for a photo shoot, with interesting background. Murals are vibrant and beautiful. Of course mission district is famous for lot of murals. This is a one stop shop for many murals!
Balmy Alley is located in the Mission District with many sideways loaded with stunning murals. Some of the murals in Balmy Alley stand out because they are 3 dimensional and has wood carvings as part of the murals. The artistic dimensions of these murals are superb. A walk through this Alley is highly inspirational.
So many meaningful murals that are purposeful in their existence, with important cultural stories.
If youre looking for amazing art free of charge, this is the place to go! The pieces are large, beautiful and all stand for a cause or purpose. Not being native to San Francisco, this alley gave me more perspective on the city dynamic than any museum could ever. Pieces cover everything from the drug epidemics to the homeless situation to cultural issues. The people that live in the alley are very kind, some even have put out dishes of water for dogs and a bench to sit on and enjoy the art. This was honestly my favorite part of SF!ï
Lovely spot within The Mission to explore local muralists. Be mindful these are the sides of active residences, so there are people / cars passing through the area. A new stroll near some great shops and restaurants.
Been to a lot of places and these are some of the best murals I’ve seen. Even better, this alley just scratches the surface of the art this area has to offer!
This place was a great hidden gem in SF. The art in this alley and the surrounding areas is beautiful. There are a lot of religious, family, and nature themes. Lots of color. If you are looking for a colorful place for photos I highly recommend. It can be busy at different times. The experience really depends but it is worth it regardless.
Great to see street art with a clear message in these times.
An awesome place for instagram!
Cant miss this place if you in SF. Iconic alley featuring a constantly changing collection of murals. The murals began in the mid-80s as an expression of artists outrage over human rights and political abuses in Central America. Today the alley contains murals on a myriad of styles and subjects from human rights to local gentrification.
If youre in SF, definitely grab some Mexican food, then wander down to Balmy Alley. Some great local murals. It doesnt take long, and fits nicely in with a trip to Dolores Park.
Love the street arts along here, unfortunately the area is not well taken care of. I am pretty sure the homeless are camping here as u can smell urine and etc as you walk along here. I believe the authority to should look into this and make this place a real tourist attraction.
At the first glance this place does not appear to be the nicest of neighborhoods. However, once we were able to find a street parking spot, the area looked just okay especially when it was 10 in the morning. I really liked the artistic freedom with which some artists have tried to express themselves, even though their opinion might not be acceptable to all. This place is worth having a look if you have 15 minutes of spare time.
Balmy Alley was pretty cool to check out. After talking to a few people that live there some had mentioned that some artist have offered money to owners so they can put up there art on the garage. Some people will use there own garage to express there own art.
Must go see in person! The colors, the vibrancy and the culture surrounding this area... beautiful!
Awesome laneway in the Mission district, full of interesting street murals that change frequently. NB: It is not the only street, there are others between here and Mission St.
Cutest little alley to stop if you’re driving by!
Amazing priceless vintage San Francisco soul. Worth the trip. Much respect to the generations of local artists who create all this magic. ¡Encantado!
Awesome experience such a little gem.
I thought it was longer but its nice to see all the art... even though some of them needs re-touching of the paint.
This is the loveliest little alley to walk down. The murals have so many political messages - the artworks are very thought provoking. I had some really nice chats with the artists who were working. Very nice of them sharing their method. The area around is lovely too - esp the North end of the alley which has nice little eateries.
Creative painting on this small street. Kind of hidden place.
Gorgeous murals throughout the whole alley. The residents are friendly. Be nice and dont leave your trash behind :)
I hear its the worst coffee shop on Balmy Alley. It is definitely one of the coolest pop-up store / performance and conceptual art studio / eccentric mystic portal to other spaces that Im aware of.
Worth a jaunt over to check out this Alley as well as the shops and eatery’s around it in this cool little neighborhood.
Is great for evrey one came and the best no one have to pay for it thanks for putting this in are page
Nice place to walk through with a great collection oh murals and paintings. Often times you can find artists painting or talking about their works.
Beautiful art can be found here! Must visit for photos and to take in all the beauty and also take a walk to see the stores within the community.
Pretty interesting. Nice to see.
Neat little alley with awesome artwork on the walls!
So much passion in the paintings here. I loved it! I could feel what the artists were trying to communicate. Definitely set aside time here!
Stunning, this alley is so beautiful, all the graffiti here tell stories about the block and his people it gives you a sense of community, it is a voice a way to express your feelings, your thoughts. It’s just beautiful, this alley and its graffiti are something special for real
An awesome place for a few good pictures.
Cool alley art!
We had a good experience there. It was surprisingly clean considering the area. The street was well kept and the murals were beautiful. Great photo opportunities. We were pleasantly surprised.
If youre going to San Fran, you have to stop here and take in all the art!
The not so big alley is covered with some nice murals. It was extremely quiet when we visited and the shade gave us relief from the warm day.
Love this strip! I lived here awhile and I didnt know it had an actual name. Always gorgeous art! Fun, trippy experience! Very Bay Area
While the alley is a hotspot, the whole neighborhood is well decorated with art. Walk around! Entrance on a beautiful boulevard lined with trees.Enjoyed some great street food nearby.
It was nice to see the art work and what each mural represents.
Nice murals!
Beautiful murals by local artists depicting the political atmosphere and the culture of the Mission.
I love the street art of San Francisco and this was a complete joy for me to experience. The artists are so talented and it is a must see if youre in the area.
This place was really cool. The artwork was authentic and I am probably not doing it justice by speaking about it from an outsider, but in all respect, it was awesome to see the culture and history painted on the alleyway.
Intriguing neighborhood to explore, lively and colorful way to express culture, history, and opinions. There definitely are some politically charged and message rich images, which is exciting. Whether or not you agree, it helps show that perspective and brings us closer to a meaningful conversation. One of the more compelling elements for me was the energy in all the murals- even when dark in theme, they largely used vibrant colors and bold strokes. It showed a pride, a clear stance THIS IS WHAT WE KNOW not maybe we think it could be that.... Incredible how much you can say through this medium
Amazing place to check out some local graffiti
Very nice alley to stroll down, and see the many murals for which it has become famous. Its best to stroll down the alley in a pair or group and before dark. Some of the murals need restoration badly, as they have cracked and faded over the years.
Lots of cool murals. Absolutely worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood. Worth going out of one’s way for? Maybe.
Beautiful murals tell the story of this historic neighborhood.
It is a nice alley.
Some of the finest street art you’ll see.
Love all the Alley art in the mission.
Excellent artwork. Try to visit around midday when the sun shines on the artwork and colors on the paintings become more vivid
The entire street is covered with paintings, not any just random paintings, paintings about revolutuion, paintings that expressed strong opinions, paintings that depicted pain and struggle. Must visit street in SFO!
Very political but beautiful murals. Lost one star because of the lack of graffiti representation in this alleyway so it seems a little bit pretentious..but good work overall
Worthwhile visiting to view the painted murals in the alley and in nearby streets. Many of the murals are political in nature and I enjoyed trying to work out the messages as well as enjoying the art. Parking is difficult though. I went on a Sunday afternoon and spent 10 minutes driving around until I found street parking nearby.
San Francisco has several murals all over the city but this alley has some of my favorite murals in the city. If you are an art enthusiast this is one of the must see places in the City of San Francisco. It’s full of very many inspirational art pieces and murals, some of which depict modern movements such as the #Metoo and the women of the resistance movement. The alley is also sometimes the venue for hosting street art festivals and parties.
Fantastic murals, very imaginative, some of the figures are very well represented. Excellent use of color and perspective. Some are aging out but they are all magnificent and a real opportunity for photography!
Good place to visit. You can walk the entire street, only street parking is available. It will not busy at any time. Good time pass place to visit in SFO
Not a long alley but a great place to see all the beautiful paintings.
This picturesque alley have a nice collection of graffiti panels showing the rich cultural background of the Hispanic neighborhood.
Balmy street murals located in the Mission District of San Francisco offers a virtual outdoor art gallery featuring colourful murals featuring expression of outrage over human rights and political abuse in central America. There were also a few murals featuring themes such as gentrification and Hurricane Katrina. This place is more of San Francisco local flavour and off the beaten path. You dont see it gets crowded like other tourist attraction areas. The alley is best viewed on foot either by yourself or on a guided tour from Precita Eyes Mural Arts. Entrance to the street to view the murals are free and you can learn the local culture as well.
Such beautiful history and art. This is such a wonderful place. An outside museum.
A very unusual alley. Not sure if the sailor in a barrel is from Banksy
Really cool alley filled with mural after mural, dripping with local talent. I loved the variety of artistic styles and messages. Worth the stop if youre in the area.
Really interesting murals all the way down the alley.
One of my favorite stops in the city. I love the messages of the murals. There is so much that is expressed in this little alley. It represents the richness of the mission culture and how it wont go down without a fight. From the old to the new this alley is forever a beautiful gem!
Balmy is a collection of local cultural experiences spread over walls garages in a local back-alley setting.
Great place to see murals and other street art. The area can be a bit rough. I would take a friend and go during daylight hours. However I have been there twice by myself just depends on how you feel.
Great. Just amazing cultural expression. Absolutely worth going! Dont go at night, obviously you wont see the panels, and its not typical touristsy area. Just a word of advice for the clueless.
THE centerpiece of San Francisco Mural Art. An entire block in which virtually every fence and garage door is covered with murals, some of them going back as far as twenty years. After Balmy Ally, visit Precita Eyes Gallery on 24th St. the organization that has nurtured the Mission Mural scene and trained may of the artists.
Fun to take tourists here. Or maybe a stroll on a quiet morning with a Philz in hand.
Nice walk seeing the art. Clarion Alley is more worth your time. My partner and I (both genderqueer) got whistled and catcalled by one of the alley residents. So.
Beautiful alley. Spent lots of time admiring The Outerbody Experience Laboratory. (#66) ○ the sheer beauty!!! o the confusion of it all!!!! ART!!!!
Some of the best murals in the Mission. Lots of history guides can tell you. Personally I like Lilac closer Mission St, and the alley just west of Mission Street too. Best area to take a stroll for murals and good cheap eats.
Cool murals, almost all are very political.
Grew up playing in this Alley, Always a exciting feeling taking pictures of Our Murals S. F. M.
Grest murals a must visit located in the heart of the Mission, Balmy Alley intersects with 24th street.
The alley showcases some of the fascinating murals in the Mission District.
Interesting..nice murals..
Nah... Few nice paintings, but I expected more... The whole neighborhood is filled with paintings, so this alley is not that special.
Great place for murals in the Mission
ISF
Short alley with unique artwork. Stop by if you are in the area. Not worth the trip if coming from elsewhere
Beautiful art by talentedartis. Authentic Mission style culture.
Very deep and interesting art here, as a local, I would recommend this to tourists
