This is a great place for a home schooling history/science lesson and/or field trip. To my pleasant surprise... Kids were free right now. And its not super crowded like the zoo.
Great place to learn about the history of flight and how airplanes have affected humans over the years. Some amazing real scale planes and aircraft are scattered throughout (and overhead) the museum. Very family-friendly atmosphere and kids will get a lot of fun from the visit as well. My son loved the Navys Blue Angels plane. Parking lot is good size and free, but recommend getting there closer to the museums opening time. Definitely worth the visit for airplane fans.
First time I visited this museum and wow it had some cool stuff inside. A ton of history with lots of reading materials, plaques, and videos. This museum is also free for san Diego county residents on Tuesday. Look it up on Google to see what other museums are free.
Great place to see the history of airplanes, but not too many exhibits on space. A good history of flight and an interesting place to spend an hour of your day in Balboa park.
This is a place of history and fun. There is so much to see in this museum, more planes than in the Smithsonian museum. It has its own gems and is the house of some of the rare items for the world war artifacts. There are flight simulations and other activities for kids. It will make a nice family outing packed with history.
This is a must see!! First time being here. Its in Balboa park and easy walking distance from everything. This air and space museum is remarkable. The time and effort put into it is worth the stop. Prices are very reasonable. 20$ a person. 15$ if your military. We made it through in about 4hrs. Could easily spend more time. The place is very clean. Friendly staff
Interesting if you love planes and the history of mostly military planes. Small area about commercial flights beginning. Nice little area about space.
Great museum! But it’s very hard to get there rn. Mostly bc of constructions over there !
It was a very cool place to visit. A lot to see and learn and theres a little bit of interaction to do around. Kid friendly museum, it has cool discounts for everyone,. I wish they will put more newer stuff too, like new type of planes, things like that. We definitely enjoyed it, and might go back once in a while.
The museum is small by the standards set by outdoor air museums or the Smithsonian, but its mighty for what it is. Nestled in a building from the Worlds Fair, the classic architecture lends itself to a smooth chronology of air and space history. Many planes are recreations of the original historic planes, but the quality of them, and the details in the exhibits are really excellent. I really recommend talking to the volunteer docents about the history encased in their museum section. We talked to a lovely man, Ron, who walked us through all of WWI and the planes and information the museum had. And he would find us in different parts of the museum to offer addition tidbits here and there. We easily spend 1.5-2 hours there.
For how much you pay for its not very exciting. Took my young kids here and they enjoyed looking at all of the displays. But there were a lot of things that were closed due to covid. might have been worth the price if those things were open and we were able to interact with them. My husband did enjoy being able to do the flight simulator though.
Fun and educational. Vern was full of information and great story teller. Wish my dad could have visited with us as he was an aircraft quality control and mechanic, he could have shared so much insight.
Overall the museum was a great place to visit. However, I don’t think it’s worth $20 just to get in. They also had additional charges for some of the simulation activities. Will not be coming back.
Great place to take family interactive, informative, and visually stunning.
Nice exhibits. Interesting information. However it was a warm and low humidity day. If you are not use to dry heat or your clothes sticking to you, I would caution when you visit. Early morning may be better. The day we visited it was Food Truck Friday. There were a lot of options, there was free music and dancing. It was a nice summer evening.
Absolutely LOVE this place. Unlike other museums where you see pictures and comment cards and plaques this is the real deal. An airplane hanger filled with some inanely historical, interesting, and important aircraft that are just a marvel to look at. I 100% recommend taking a guided tour also. These guides are smart individuals who actually enjoy explaining everything you could want to know about the museum and its contents. I visit a fair amount and every tour Ill still hear some new information that is just fascinating. I could spend days here and still enjoy myself.
San Diego Air and Space museum, located centrally in Balboa Park, is an amazing tour through modern history. An animated Charles Lindberg alongside the famous Spirit of St Louis airplane greets visitors as they enter. Actual aircraft and replicas are suspended in mid air and staged along a stunning walkway. Vehicles, life-size figures and even a Charles Schultz style Snoopy dog atop his Red Baron doghouse help the experience come to life. The walk culminates with an exit into a gorgeous, glass atrium with planes, vehicles, fountains and a stage intended for private parties or events. Virtual Reality simulators await the brave adventurer too! For the grounded traveler, a small, soothing outdoor balcony provides a magnificent view of San Diego Downtown along with cold beer, food and snacks for sale. Great for everyone! Bring the kids and Grandma.
San Diego Air and Space Museum (SDASM, formerly the San Diego Aerospace Museum) is an aviation and space exploration museum in San Diego, California. The museum is located in Balboa Park and is housed in the former Ford Building, which is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. We visited this place on May 25, 2018, during our first San Diego trip. It’s a wonderful museum that contains many original and reproductions of historic aircraft and spacecraft. They have a fascinating collection of aircraft of all types, including German and Japanese planes from WWII. The original Apollo 9 command module is also here. It’s not the biggest museum but the exhibits are world class. The 4D Apollo experience was fantastic. The Pavilion of Flight in the center of the museum was also impressive.
Fun museum for both adults and kids. Be sure to go there with some extra time to look around because there’s a lot to see and explore! San Diego Air and Space Museum is one of my favorite museums in San Diego.
Lots of cool things to do and knowledge. They charge for different interactive games apart from the tickets. Other sections are closed due to COVID-19.
Open good social distancing and free parking.
It was very cool. Literally and figuratively. The ac was cranked up a bit too much. It was freezing inside but everything else was great: parking, aircraft, bathrooms, information, lay out, staff, cleanliness, 3d/4d theater, kids area, organization, location, utilization of space. It was all really wonderful.
Dont know much about aircrafts so there were lots of interesting information + models to take a look at here. Well worth the price.
The San Diego Air & Space Museum was a great experience. My kids 10 & 9 thoroughly enjoyed our time there looking through the various aircraft, NASA exhibits, war memorabilia and old vehicles. There were interactive exhibits sprinkled around as well which brought history to life. I highly recommend this museum.
A very nice, if somewhat limited display of aviation history. Most floor space is dedicated to military aviation, reasonable in my opinion. Im a little disappointed that so much area has been shifted from historic displays to interactive activities and special events.... it seems to show quite a bit less than it did 20 years ago, but perhaps this change better suits the current patrons. Docents are quite knowledgeable.
Perfect activity during the day. Enjoyed the movie too!
I didnt know what to expect. With the Explorer Pass we tend to stick to the places on the main stretch in Balboa, but we will be sure to visit the Air and Space Museums more often. They had a space exhibit that had a lot of neat stations and information. The kids especially loved that they could sit and pretend to be going to space with buttons to press and knobs to turn. They also have a 4-D theater that shows three movies ranging from 5 minutes to 8 minutes. Two of the movies require the use of glasses, the one does not but with each movie you get the seat and air movement. They even have a kids hanger area where there are hands on activities for the kids to do - fold a paper airplane, jump on the moon, fly a model airplane (up, down, right, left from behind a gate), and simulators of some sort.In all it is a super clean place and the docents are informative and helpful. There are bathrooms located in the museum.
Excellent museum for military and history buffs. Its incredible to see how large and intricate a carrier can be.The displays are well-marked and informative. And the gift shop is pretty extensive as well. Its awe-inspiring and makes me proud that we can make such incredible and powerful machines. All in all, if youre in San Diego, this is definitely worth a visit!
This is a great museum for someone to nerd out during the space exhibit as well as the various eras aircrafts
Such a fun museum. Alot to see & very cool seeing all the space stuff. Alot of interactive things. & so mich history.Everything looks to be in great shape & definitely well kept. Love going to a museum & things are not run down.Love it. Will need to come back & read everything. (Toddlers are fun) they have a kid area too.Military free, dependents $2 off .
Soo much information. Awesome museum. Can spend all day here.
I cannot state how fantastic of an experience my visit was. First off, the building theyre in is historic, dont miss the opportunity to learn its history and unique components such as a fantastic mural. The exhibits are wide and varied, tons of amazing model work (better than the models I see in the Smithsonian) and fantastically preserved aircraft from all eras of flight. I was with a large group of people during a catered event and could barely walk through parts of the museum but there were still very knowledgeable staff on hand to answer questions. Not only were they knowledgeable, but they had passion and interest that made my discussions with them the highlight of my evening. My only regret is not getting them to sign the museums guidebook.
We have what I thought was was a pretty exciting museum in Tucson but this place is amazing! Best museum
I LOVE THIS PLACE! So many cool objects and aircraft. The docent who spoke with my friends and I was incredibly knowledgeable and so friendly. He came up to us when he saw us looking at the Blue Angels aircraft they had and proceeded to explain why it was there, the aircraftsnlife span and the differences between the air force, army and marines version of the aircraft (I grew up in the airline industry and know a ton about aircraft, but that was cool to learn about). They have a new exhibit starting March 1st for space/NASA. Anyway, so worth the time and money to go here.
Great venue. We rented the place out for an evening corporate event and couldnt be more pleased. Exhibits were top notch and the docents were engaging and knowledgable (Howard Hughes was cool). Lived the ladies and gentlemen greeting us as linemen when we arrived. A great job.
Fantastic place. Lots of volunteers eager to help you. Very good expeditions. Some very detailed pieces of available for viewing. I like to this piece section of the museum with some very interesting pieces displayed. I could have probably spent another two hours there but I had to go.
Beautiful place to visit
If you love space and airplanes youll love the Air and Space museum!
This is a great museum and you should come here. I came here during the ‘speed’ exhibit, and it was great! I also liked how the exhibits inside cover the entire country, and how nice they were.
I have never been inside, I do drop off customers there and employees and everyone seems to like it. So I have no problem giving them five stars. Plus I checked out the reviews and they have a good rating and good reviews so 5 stars no problem.
Very cool static displays. Smaller than I thought it would be but they pack a lot into the space they have. A must for aviation enthusiasts.
So much history here. I was blown away at some of the actual historical artifacts they have on display.
I was looking for places to visit while i was staying in San Diego and I can say I was not disappointed. Although the building is relatively small, there is no shortage of history or exhibits. Some of the planes and vehicles are replicas, but it is still cool to see the history behind each exhibit.
Really enjoyed walking through this place and seeing all of the history. Well organized, good signage, friendly staff. Definitely a place to stop by if you are in San Diego.
San Diegos aerospace contributions are many and are presented here with style.Lots of historical aircraft from all over the world. The docents are engaging and fun. It is hard to see everything in one pass!
San Diego has been a military base location for many years and this museum corroborate its rich military background. Great history about airplanes and such with very knowledgeable and friendly staff! A must for every tourist!
Great experience in a post-shutdown world! Felt safe and they took the time during the pandemic to update the exhibits and do some touch-up. New articles about African American history in Aviation are especially relevant in todays conversations.
Great place I could spend all day looking around and reading.
Kids had a great time. Staff was very knowledgeable & friendly. Fun for the whole family!
This museum is always so much fun to visit. We also had the pleasure of celebrating my sons 1st birthday there. It was an amazing little celebration. All the kids had a blast!
Best place to visit in San Diego history of Nasa
Interesting museum inside the Balboa park. It is not huge and you can see everything in 1-1,5 hours.
You must check out the new space exhibit at the museum! I love the history of the planes and space mobiles that they have on display. It brings me back to childhood memories of wanting to be an astronaut!
Awesome place to take the family, very affordable. We were expecting to spend an hour or two here, but ended up spending half the day, and still didnt see everything. There is so much to do and see; theres tons of interactive areas for the kids. Our little one loved the space area. The best part is the gift shop is actually affordable; I know, I was as shocked as you. Definitely would recommend and will visit again next time were in town.
AWESOME IS WAS NICE GREAT SERVICE AND FRIENDLY PEOPLE AND NICE ROBOTS
Great museum with an incredible display. I highly recommend the San Diego Air and Space Museum for anyone at all interested in history, aviation, space, or our military.
Great air museum. Lots of great displays and different aircraft. Make sure you look up as you go through. Lots of exhibits hanging from the museum ceiling. Close to many different things in the park.
This museum is full of history, artifacts and exhibits that show the history of aviation and the impact on people. The exhibits are amazing, educational and tangible for learning, exploring and general knowledge of aviation and t telling its story. This s truly a place worth visiting!
Fantastic museum, well worth the visit if you like this sort of thing
A really small museum and nothing like the Smithsonian Museums in the east and costed us $20/person. Few interactive areas for little kids and lots of pop up Did you know? Type things. At some areas it looked like a pop-up because the walls still had paintings of cavemen, Egyptians, etc. Few pay-premium areas like Docent-guided tours and flight simulators, none of which we did. No place to eat inside so pack snacks if packing around little ones. There is a kid play area that is small and gets crowded quickly - stations included, make a paper airplane, coloring, Lego building, race cars down tracks, moon looking jump station. Though its nothing spectacular or overly air and space, it was what we needed to burn off some energy!Personally could have done without this one having been to the museums in DC.
There is a ton of stuff to see here, we spent a good two hours looking around! My only real complaint is the layout had no pattern. We started down the hall of wings then suddenly we came to the space section, which was quite impressive, but then we were dumped out in WW1 Era but the display time-line was backwards so we started at the end of the war and read about it back to the beginning as we continued farther into the museum. As we rounded a corner there was a big Challenger memorial, why wasnt that over with the space exhibit!? There were lots of models on display, many videos to watch, and lots of stories to read about inventors and innovators of the industry.
Ive been here twice. Its not as large as some places but you get to see a lot of aviation history. It makes a great venue for events. I didnt pay for the simulation but got a free ride when I attended an event. The simulator spins and tilts pretty well and feels like youre almost upside down.
Was interesting so much was blocked off for private event
Great place in a beautiful area! So much to see and do in San Diego however if you love aviation you’ll love this place! The area is rich in military aviation history and this place is just one of many having displays you won’t want to miss! Just outside you can see up close the legendary SR71 with more inside displays show casing various aircraft and naval aviation!
It is a very nice museum. All ages can enjoy it. Every 4 months they change many of the cars. At present, there are many 70s vehicles along with many unique and unusual vehicles. This is brand new. It is worth the trip.
Very small and tightly packed aviation museum with high admission fees ($20 for one ticket) There are a lot of interesting exhibits on display here but it seems like not enough thought was put into their presentation. You might catch yourself accidentally walking past something you’re interested in, or searching for info on something that caught your eye - not finding it. Overall okay were it not for the previously mentioned High Admission Fees. Some of the staff aren’t very knowledgeable re: missing info on certain exhibits.
Today was free admission for locals. My son made two different airplanes with paper and supplies that the museum offered the kids. We enjoyed ourselves with all the hands on projects!
This one was awesome with all the plains and large scale air crafts, better for boys than girls but still better than other museums...
Nice little museum that definitely does not disappoint. A lot of originals and well done replica. Definitely seemed to be for older children and adults which is nice because the exhibits go in depth. Loved the center pavilion
Wonderful display of planes and space exhibits with tons of information about each. This was my favorite museum to visit while in town!
This museum was truly an amazing experience. The memorabilia collected all in one place. And there was an older museum tour guide who told us amazing stories about the Japanese bombers and his own personal encounters with astronauts. It was wonderful hearing his stories. We will be visiting here again ASAP.
Such amazing history and great place to walk around for a few hours. Clean and so much fun to look at all the aircrafts and stories they come with.
Awesome place very informative and lots of fun
Knowledgeable docents that are willing to give you a tour at any time! Great up close and personal air/space crafts, both real and replicas! And if you need lunch or gelato there’s a great cafe in the Hall of Champions!!
So much history! My children loved this place!
This is hands down my husbands favorite museum in Balboa Park. While its not my favorite, it is still a great museum to come visit. Each time I come I learn something new, even though there hasnt been a whole lot changed to it over the years, there are a lot of exhibits to take in. In my opinion it is well curated and packed with a great deal of artifacts from both WWI & WWII that are interesting as well as informative. The docents are available to answer questions. Every one of the docents that weve met through the years have been extremely knowledgeable and very friendly, it is evident that the staff and volunteers take pride in this museum, as well they should.Be prepared to spend a couple of hours immersing yourself in history. There truly is a lot to take in. There are also interactive displays as well. When my sons were growing up, this was one of the few museums that we could take them that they actually enjoyed. There is a parking lot right in front of the museum. The lot does fill up quickly, as do most of the lots in Balboa Park. There are various parking lots throughout the park as well as an open air tram that shuttles visitors throughout the park.
1/2 Was closed. There balance was wonderful. Good variety and history.
Star Wars, an add attraction! Out and about, nice crowd, good music! Thanks
To be perfectly honest, it was a little smaller than what I expected and slightly underwhelming. However, that might just be because I had my expectations of all museums set so high by friends. The building itself is very cool and they have a great atrium. I enjoyed the space portion the most, even if it was a bit small.
Was looking forward to visiting this museum while visiting San Diego. Upon entering, theres a lot to explore (this part was our favorite). The museum itself was on the smaller side, with a sizeable portion of space dedicated to a speed exhibit (that you may have had to pay extra for). Had lots of potential for more, though there were lots for children to enjoy.
Awesome museum with an SR-71 out front!
Would recommend 100%! If you LOVE space then its a good place to spend 2hours just reading and playing with their exhibit. (They also have a air exhibit showcasing amazing planes and helicopters)
Pretty nice especially if your into planes and history, they have added some things to keep the kids happy also.
Great burger and freshest of fries! These are the classic In & Out burgers and fries made fresh from real potatoes. We had the double double combo which fills the bill for the hungry tourist. We will be back.
Its the first time they I have visited a museum about planes and space. Actually there a re not much stuff about space but they have got many planes and parts especially from the world war first and second. As a result take your children and get there :)
A LOT of planes, not as much Space. Some amazing space memorabilia and a stunning history of flight overall. Worth a look for sure
Many things to see, very interesting information.
If you want to experience space technology learn how different research leads to innovation today we use. There is a separate section on military technology evolution. Real life models of planes and replicas are on display with detailed historical facts.A must place for aviation technology enthusiasts.
Wonderful place if you like to know the history about Air and Space technology
Cool musuem for avid aviation and space lovers! There is plenty of content to see and read about, though more of planes and less of space.
Really good variety of aircraft and spacecraft. Great displays that describe the various exhibits. Has Apollo and Mercury space craft displays as well as old and modern airplane displays.
Excellent place to bring all lovers of space and aviation!
Great place for airplane enthusiast! Alot of history from military and non military aircraft. Its family and kid friendly. There are workshops along the path to stimulate kids minds. Kids can play STEM games as it pertains to aviation. Although a bit small compared to some of the more well know aviation museums you will definitely get your fare share of education on aviation. Definitely a place to stop by.
Great place to spend afternoon clean quiet dark
Being an Aviation Junkie it fills my Need For Speed.
Not very large but that makes it accesable for smaller children with a limited attention span. For the die-hard aviation enthusiasts it has a couple of nice displays. There are a fair number of replicas and reproductions though. The automotive museum is right next door so a combination visit of the two is very doable. Balboa park has some other nice places such as the san Diego natural history museum and the train museum. Balboa is nice for walks
