Very dry we werent told that prior to our heading tickets online. There was a water main break and saws had areas closed off. We took our 3 boys. Our oldest 8 yr old is learning about the wetlands and wanted to visit. We also had our 6yr old and 4yr old. We drove through and just looked at the dry wetlands. We finally got to basin 3&4 which had water. We didnt see anything but they had fun just driving through and were so sad to see it dry. We then parked and walked through the small paths by the visiting center. They loved getting out and running through the woodlands and brush area. The benches were flipped over and broken so there was no place to rest. We will be going back when there is water and enjoy the beauty of the wetlands.
Bad time to visit! No water in 95% of basins so birds are about nothing. Saw 3 Plovers. About 30 turtle heads. We were so sad. Hopefully it rains soon to fill up blackened dry water beds.
Great place for bird photography. I also love their mission, however, they are the worse when it comes to keeping the public updated with their open hours. I live in Florida and visit my in-laws every year. I make sure I pay Mitchell Lake Audubon Center a visit when in town. Today, I checked their place in google maps and it said “Opens at 7am”. I waited with my dad in the car for more than 15min until open. At 7:15am the place was still closed even though Google maps said “Opened”. I called and was referred to different Audubon centers around Texas. I couldn’t talk to anyone over the phone. It wasn’t until I drove very close to the gate that noticed a white piece of paper saying that the place was closed due to covid-19. Not the first time I go for nothing after checking and calling. They really need to get better at it.
It’s not a bad place to get outside and enjoy some wildlife. This place is a perfectly maintained spot for those birds migrating through South Texas during the fall, or the spring. If you go during the right time of the year, you should see plenty of waterfowl migrating through. If you take a hike in the 1.5 miles of wooded trails, and pay attention, you’ll see all sorts of other bird species. The walking here is easy. It’s very flat, some of it is paved, and most of it is smooth gravel roads. You can even drive through the area if you are unable to walk it. Even the wooded trails are smooth and level - not rocky at all (but no driving there). If you are walking it, make note that about 90% of it is in the sun, so take PLENTY of water. You can probably get between 3 and 4 miles out of it if you decide to take every single path.I’ve been out there twice now, and most of the people I usually see are near the front area attending the birding tours, etc. I have hardly seen any pedestrians or cars on the further stretches of the lake and retaining ponds. It’s $5 per person to enter, and YES, they DO accept credit cards.I can tell you that if you visit during the late summer and early fall, you will see a TON of American White Pelicans in the actual lake area. I mean TONS of them! Also, quite a variety of gulls, ibis, egrets, and herons at this time of the year. Fellow Yelper Stephen C tells me that later in the fall, many more ducks will migrate through - I’m going to have to make another trip out there soon just for that.I also want to give a huge shout out to Stephen C. for spending so much time volunteering here to keep this place an active birding spot for San Antonians and others to enjoy!
Very nice place, my son did a work study there. Great place to go, never been there prior to him working there. Not everyone is aware that its open to the public. Take a day and go visit. Walk a trail!
Great place to bird just south of downtown San Antonio. Especially good for ducks and shorebirds.
Good trip for the little ones. Educational for sure.
Had a blast going to Mitchell Lake Audubon with N.I.S.D. this morning. It wouldnt have been the same without our tour guide Ray. He was nice, patient with all the kids, very informative, and you could tell he loves what he does. Cant wait to go back and walk the rest of the trails and take more pictures.
Great tour kids had a blast on the fieltrip we learned so much
My sons 3rd grade class went to this fantastic place today. We experienced many things including info of wetland plants & animals. Our leader was excellent and very knowledgeable The class learned several new words and filled out their definitions. They were able to do hands on activities and listen to what nature life was all about. I would highly recommend this place for an educational and nature experience. And for anyone else who loves the outdoors. We had a blast!!
This is really a great place for birding. The walks are so beautiful. Great people who work, very knowledgeable about birds. This is one of the best birding places Ive ever been too.
Good place to look for winter water fowl.
Amazing place to see birds.
Amazing place to go for Birding. The Sunday birding group tour is a lot of fun, and a great way to get a ton of new birds checked off your list. The group was very knowledgeable, and I had a great time chatting with everyone. Even if you arent into birding, this is still a great way to spend a day in nature and learn about our winged friends. They guarantee you will see at least thirty different species of birds on the Sunday group tour, but I saw twice that many.
Great place! Awesome educational opportunities and resources. People there are passionate and the birds are beautiful
Glorious landscape as well as birds,!
What a great visit we had at this nature center despite the unexpected heat today 16 May 2018. Nikki and Gilbert were very helpful in realizing my dream to see and photograph the incredible Painted Bunting and meet other kinds of hummingbirds. It was worth every mile of the 1639 miles we covered to come here. If youre into nature or wildlife tripping, this is a must visit. Theres a minimal fee but youre not going to pay more than $15 for a family. They have a gift shop which also sells snacks.
It is always nice and relaxing to walk around the house and nearby grounds before driving around the lakes to bird watch. Today, we saw the fastest turtle cross the road. Why did it cross the road?
Educational and interesting outdoor experience.
Great place to go birding.
Havent had a chance to go there.
This is a must stop for anyone remotely interested in birding & nature. Located in south San Antonio, the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center is stewarded by the Texas Audubon Society. The love and caring for this amazing area is readily apparent. Visitors can choose to hike some or all of the seven miles of available trails or take a break and watch birds feeding from the visitor center front porch. The visitors center is housed in a wonderful turn of the century home offering a resource room, small gift shop, drinks and even a few snacks to purchase. Bring a lunch and enjoy a relaxing moment watching the many birds that inhabit this 624-acre site. With a mixture of brushland, grassland, mud flats, shallow ponds, deep ponds, and a deep water lake. Mitchell Lake is positioned on a natural migratory bird route and serves as a resting point for tens of thousands of birds each year.In our travels around this beautiful country weve had the pleasure to visit many water treatment areas. Theyre the perfect places to see local and migrating birds. They’re also the perfect places to hike AND enjoy an areas local flora and fauna. Mitchell Lake Audubon Center stands out as a top must visit destination when visiting San Antonio.Check the local website for current visiting hours and special programs and tours. Currently, there is a entrance fee of $5 for adults and $2 for children.
Can’t explain how great this place is. All of the staff is so nice and helpful, and the grounds are beautiful.
Great place for birding! They let me borrow a pair of binoculars for free.Gnats are overwhelming in the summer but thats good for the wildlife.I wish they would let me take my dog out of the car on a leash as long as hes not a disturbance to the wildlife or visitors.
Lovely just lovely. A nature lovers dream. To thinks its right here off 410. I heard about this place when visiting the Botanical Gardens. Just lovely. Great for a hike with family.
Birding is wonderful here. Lots of native plants (with labels!) and short trails near the small outdoor amphitheater. Lots of butterflies in the fall and spring!! Bathrooms and water fountains in the visitors center.

This is a fantastic nature preserve for bird and insect enthusiasts! There is a huge biodiversity here with among the nature trails, heavily wooded areas, and the lake. All sorts of beautiful birds can be observed in the area, such as vireos, warblers, sparrows, flycatchers, titmice, gulls, herons, ducks, kestrels, and many more!
The southside is one of SAs most underrated gems. The lake is perfect to take the kids out and learn about nature and birds.
Very beautiful place! We went for the migrated bird day and just absolutely loved it!
Very knowledgeable employees, my kids learned a lot on the nature walk as well as from the visitors center, the ladies told them about snakes in the area. We will go back for more trail action.
Lots of fun for all. Both kids and adults will enjoy their visit. Take some water.
Such a cool experience! Its beautiful! My boys 4 & 5 enjoyed the kids birding tour.
One of my favorite places to bird. Relatively close as it is on the south side of San Antonio with a variety of habitats.
Loved watching the migratory birds. It was so peaceful listening to the sounds of nature.
It is a nice place to enjoy a nature walk.
A great place to learn about plants that are native to our area. I attended a wildscaping presentation that was absolutely fabulous. I learned that Nandina plants that Ive been around all my life are actually poisonous to birds; false parsley is not a safe wildflower; oak tree leaves emit an acidic substance that prevents other plants, except some clump grasses, from growing; buffalo grass is the type of grass I want because it only requires 11 of rainfall & is very low maintenance; native milkweed, not tropical milkweed, is what we should plant for the butterflies because its typically dead by the time the monarchs migrate; many of our plants, Spanish Dagger flowers, Turks Caps, Agarita berries are edible; Coral Beans are unbelievably gorgeous, loved by hummers but attracts ants; & so, so much more! What a great way to spend celebrating Earth Day!!Cant wait to hear about birds!
