Pretty over looks, decent maintained trails, only a few rocky moderately difficult sections that hiking boots would definitely help but not required. Definitely not bike friendly. Parking is limited to 10 cars with road parking not an option. The red loop is about 1mile, the blue/more difficult, is about 4m.I would recommend, longer but easier than buzzard Rock, definitely easier than Sharp Top- Peaks of Otter. twice as long and more difficult than roaring Run.
Excellent day for a hike as skies are blue and the air is cool. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and a walking stick is helpful but not required. A lot of leaves are down in November so footing can be slippery. Beautiful views and elevation change is challenging. This is not just a walk in the woods but a good workout.
If you do the Piratebush, Cascade, Canyon, and Overlook trails together they make a nice ~3.5 mile loop with about 800 ft of elevation gain/loss. Note that of Sept. 6, 2020 the spur at the bottom to view the cascade is closed due to storm damage. Overall a moderate hike with steep sections. I would be careful with young kids as the trail in some sections is narrow with a steep drop. Only 10 parking spots, plan accordingly.
Unsung gem 15-20 minutes from 419 on 12 o Clock Knob Road. Great hiking trails for a quick morning out and back. Trails are well marked and stone steps ease the gentle climbs and creek crossings. Lots of Mtn Laurel and Rhododendron along the way. And moss, I love the moss! Only drawback is the small lot-- only 10 parking spaces but were usually the only ones there during the week. Travel down 221 even from Salem unless you like to pass on the one lane area of the the Knob road.
Beautiful area. If you’re a nature nerd, this is a great place to botanize. Few invasive species compared to other natural areas nearby and some truly rare and spectacular plants. It has the largest population of the endangered Buckleya distichophylla in the world and many of the plants are right next to the trail so you don’t need to disturb the soil to get great photos.
Not worth the trip unfortunately. To get there you have to take twelve oclock knob road which is insanely narrow and dangerous. After a harrowing journey, youre rewarded with an underwhelming hike to an unremarkable overlook. Poor Mountain sums it up pretty well.
UPDATE: The trail has been repaired! The large hole left by the root ball has been integrated into the trail itself by installing rock steps on both sides for safely traversing it. Original post: Recent ice storm took out lots of trees and a big one took the trail with it! This is the big oak near the bottom if youre familiar with the trail. You may want to avoid this area until repairs are made. Trail is fine going clockwise from the top to the cascades.
Would be nice if someone trimmed back the poison ivy vines. Very pretty though.
Awesome trail right along the mountainside. Its a beautiful park. Please wear sturdy hiking boots and watch your step for your safety. There are some steep rocky spots. Definitely a favorite.
Great hike! Wish there were more waterfalls to see. We hiked with our dog and the only water was at the bottom for him to cool off in. During wet seasons there were sections you could see where the waterfalls would be and where the dogs could cool off in. Not many areas to get good views but the ones we did find were good!
Trails well marked. One place where tree has fallen and trail is gone so be careful!
There are two different trail systems within the Poor Mountain Natural Preserve. The first, and easiest of the two circles the top of the mountain. The other trail system covers everything from the sun-baked mountain tops, to the shady valley bottom. It is a very rigorous hike. Both have great views.
Nice 4-mile loop hike with elevation gains.
Beautiful hike with gorgeous views of the surrounding area and a nice surprise of flowing water falls.
The gift shop was my favorite part. Very beautiful area. There wasnt actually a gift shop.
Awesome hike. Very diverse flora and a beautiful overlook. Takes about 2 hrs for an out of shape guy like myself.
Very nice hike. Downhill switchbacks and uphill switchbacks the whole way
Beautiful spot
Awesome sights
A short hike.
