The Mt. Hope Cemetery is a must-see for any visitor to the Rochester area. Cemeteries especially old ones are unique in providing history and great photo opportunities. I enjoyed exploring this great facility and I had no trouble locating its two famous residents Susan B Anthony and Frederick Douglass. The short drive up the cobblestone road was a little hair raising for me though. I didnt want to mess up my new cars transmission. When you visit the Mt. Hope Cemetery dont forget your camera.
Cool cemetery lots of awsome rocks not sure why they have names on them though 10/10 monkeys
This is a must-see if youre in Rochester. Its an old cemetery. Its hilly, some of the tombstones are crooked or leaning over, and I appreciate that they leave the grass, weeds, and wildflowers a bit unkempt. It really adds to the mystic and sense of time the cemetery has. I didnt find the map they gave us particularly helpful because the locations werent exactly right, and while it gave a list of significant people, the map didnt give information about who all the people were. But, there are tons of resources online and apps you can use that will give you better context. This is a true gem. Dont miss it!
This site is absolutely stunning and offers some of the most beautiful resting places in the state. Many of the graves remain untouched and as they were over 100 years ago. The cemetery offers many differeny kinds of burials and even erected a garden for friends to scatter the ashes of their loved ones.
Well maintained historic cemetery in Rochester that spreads across considerable area and is worth exploring.
Ive always loved this cemetery for its history and beauty. It wasnt until yesterday, though, when we laid my mom to rest there that I was able to fully appreciate the service that Mt Hope provides. We scattered moms ashes in the scattering garden, and leading up to that ceremony we had a wonderful experience with Lydia, the woman in the office. She was supportive and knowledgeable and made the whole thing so easy (which is saying a lit when youre dealing with the untimely death of a parent). On the morning of the service, the man who met us in scattering garden was very kind and allowed us to customize the ceremony as we needed. I feel a much stronger pull to visit Mt Hope now that I know the folks working behind the scenes are just as wonderful as the ambiance of the cemetery. And my family was so impressed with our experience that several of us are considering making arranges with Mt Hope ahead of time for our own cemetery needs. I highly recommend this cemetery both as a stunningly beautiful and well-maintained historical park, and as a wonderful and easy-to-access organization to help deal with the hardships of burial arrangements.
The coolest cemetery around. Aside from being the place for Susan B Anthony and Frederick Douglass to rest, it makes for a lovely walk or run, picnic, you name it. The cemetery is expansive and seeing all the old graves is somewhat magical. I know they do tours too, never checked it out, so can’t provide any info on that oops.
This was my third date with my now wife... surprisingly a cemetery is quite romantic. But really, check it out and enjoy the landscape. You can also hunt down Susan B. Anthony’s grave. Try to do it without a map for more fun.
Gorgeous old cemetery rich in history. Stop by and say hi to Susan B Anthony and Frederick Douglas.
Mount Hope Cemetery is quite unique, and its more than just a graveyard. They offer different types of tours depending on the season. In October, you get a tour of the cemetery at certain spots at night, light up by tiki torches. This tour is always sold out!Cemetery is also home to the graves of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, which are all easy to find. This cemetery also has unique landscapes formed by glaciers which really makes it completely different than any other cemetery.
We visited to pay our respects to two inspiring and courageous people who are buried here - Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Their burial sites are modest they way they should be.The pinpointed locations here on Google Maps are pretty accurate so it wasnt very difficult for us finding them. They are a bit of a distance from each other so we got some good cardio workout in the process. You can also drive slowly along the cemetery road and park temporarily near the burial sites.Dont miss out on the statue of Mr. Douglass by the cemetery entrance.
Paved roads and cobblestone trails cover almost 200 acres of hilly and flat terrain, making it a wonderfully interesting place to walk year-round. Two entrances from Mt. Hope Ave, the northern one enters the oldest part of the cemetery, but the southern entrance is the main gate where you can stop in the office to pick up a map if youre looking for specific graves (Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass among he most well-known). The third entrance, off Elmwood Ave. opposite Strong Hospital, enters the flat & newer section. If youre not in a rush, a slow amble through will reward you with peaceful vistas & new discoveries of wildlife & carved memorials. There are almost always walkers, runners, and grounds crew about, giving it a livelier atmosphere than you might expect!
Incredible experience, there is so much to learn. We had a wonderful tour and cant wait to go back again.
Not your average cemetery! The locals seem to take full advantage of the steep hills, smoothly paved winding roads and eye capturing fountains (pond included). At this Cemetery-Park youll find cyclists, runners, skateboarders, cute babies in strollers, site seers, university students, power walkers... Or you just may run into someone doing push ups or meet a beautiful husky with icy blue eyes like we did... Oh yeah not to mention the history making, trailblazing Rochestarians who now rest here.
This place holds so much history and is so valuable! Such a beautiful cemetery
Beautiful and peaceful Victorian style cemetery. Our Indian trail goes straight through it on high ridges that were created by glacial melting and erosion. Great place just for a peaceful stroll and exploration of historic structures and geographic change. This cemetery once had several ponds. But now only one remains and is called Sylvan Waters. Very sentimental and historic place to explore, learn, get peace of mind, and rest your loved ones if you so choose.
While its in need of some serious TLC it is still a beautiful and peaceful place. My family and I loved walking through and enjoying the history of our home town, as well as visiting the family we have buried there. We hope someday the cemetery will have a well needed and well deserved makeover and refurbish the many broken down grave stones and clip back some of the overgrowth of trees and shrubbery. This local gem is too important to just let go of.
Great place to walk and look around. It is very beautiful to see all of the memorials and stones. Even if you are driving through slowly with the window down, its a great way to spend an afternoon.
Took our second guided tour here, led by members of the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery. Well worth the nominal fee, these folks are experts not only in the history of the cemetery, but of our fair city, as well. They also help take care of the trees and plants inside the cemetery. Its free to walk/jog/run through this beautiful historical resource in downtown Rochester, but if youre looking to learn more about the residents, the guided tours are well worth a few dollars investment, especially when you know the money is put back into the cemetery in the form of public education and natural beautification.A+ Rochester landmark
I regularly walk through Mt. Hope cemetery and it is indeed one of the best and most peaceful walks to be had in the city. However, sadly I am forced to agree with other negative reviewers and for the same reason. On two separate occasions I have seen a large black poodle viciously attacking and mortally wounding the wildlife that calls the cemetery home - with the owners nowhere in sight. Please, Mt. Hope reinforce your dog-on-leash laws! Not only is this irresponsible behavior on the pet owners part, but the dogs may contract serious diseases.
Resting Place of Susan B. Anthony. Truly a treasure and pleasure to have the chance to visit. So many lovely markers.
Beautiful place to walk, incredible history, architecture, specimen trees and gardens. 200 acres to explore with family and friends. Dogs must be leashed.
Legendary, historic, beautiful place in Rochester. So many famous figures lay to rest in this breathtakingly gorgeous sprawling park. A true land of history and mystery!
Great place to be alone with your thoughts, the place is dead.
Its more like a beautiful park than a cemetery. During the summer I always take walks/go running here, its so peaceful and historic.
One of the most beautiful cemeteries Ive ever been to.
Cool place to walk and read a book
I got to see lil jojo grave
Beautiful cemetery! Its a great place for walks and photography and its gorgeous during Autumn! A must-visit in Rochester :)
Mt. Hope cemetery is one of the best cemeteries Ive been to. Indeed I walk there regularly. Why the one star? This morning I witnessed two off-leash dogs attacking a groundhog which was trying to run away with most of the contents of its body cavity trailing behind it. The owners were nowhere in sight. It was as disgusting and disturbing as one could imagine. Mt. Hope, please enforce the dogs-on-leash rule. You have many maintenance crew members that can do this as soon as they see an off-leash dog. The ones I spoke to after the incident seemed like they couldnt have cared less.
Beautiful in every season and a great place to go for a run.
There are quite a few dead people here. Check it out! Theyre fun to talk too!
Beautiful and historic cemetery. The grave sites of Susan B Anthony and Frederick Douglass can be found here.
Historical beauty surrounding some of the most gorgeous walking paths in Monroe County. Typically used for day trips, picnics and seasonal tours, Mount Hope offers many things to many types of enthusiasts.
Beautiful cemetery with many people of American historical significance. A must visit especially in Spring & Fall
Gorgeous and historic. Besides Susan B and Freddie D, there are countless founders of early America.
So amazing and beautiful- could spend a whole day just walking around
This is a beautiful and old cemetery, with several famous burial plots. There are tours quite often if youre interested in learning details (I havent actually gone on any though, so Im not sure how good they are).
Im going here for my 7th grade field trip tomorrow I hope its going to be fun
I came to visit the grave site of Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass & Fletcher Steele..Rochester, New york has so much to experience. these folks are people Ive been wanting to pay respect to..
:)) Probably the most gorgeous Cemetery in the World!!! Theres steep little hills all over the N. & central parts & 4 Kettles: very rare big pits formed by Glaciers during the Ice Age! A beautiful algae covered pond w/ a rock tower in the middle. The most diverse color range of Autumn leaves in Monroe County or anywhere that Ive ever seen; partly because of the huge variety of trees! w/ 350,000 gravesites; many are wonderful! So many great Angel statues!! + Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglas, Nathaniel Rochester, Jonathan Child, Bausch & Lomb, Gannett(founder of newspaper) etc.
Beautiful rolling hills, great place to walk and lots of history!!
Love the tours and all the history one hears about!
Great place to relax and see history.
Hauntingly Beautiful, Incredibly old. Wander for hours, get lost amongst the dead and ponder our nations tumultuous history.
Beautiful place for a walk, especially during the fall.
