Beautiful spot to chill, chat with friends, play some catch, walk the pooch. Chairs, fountain, some sports equipment. One of my fav spots!
Great park, theres usually alot fo college students here, and theres a coffee shop in the middle.
Monroe Park is a gentrified graveyard of what VCU might have been. This used to be a place of gathering for any and all Richmond locals. Now it is a gravel pathway for students and only students. The gravel isnt even fun to walk on or take a scooter through. Try again VCU. At least the fountain lights up sometimes.
When one thinks about a park, usually what comes to mind is a little play area for the kids, public restrooms, and maybe a trail. This park however is a different kind of park. Its located in the center of the city, great for sitting down and having a conversation with friends, walk your canine friend, and people watch.Me and my wife came here to eat our poke bowl we purchased from a nearby local restaurant. There were no tables but we made do.They have a stone ping-pong table and multiple benches to sit on. Monroe park is more suited to college students to chill and do some school work with classmates and or on their laptops which I beleive is the real purpose of this park as it is right beside some of VCUs buildings.
Great park to sit and enjoy quiet and peace, also good place to play some outdoor games or cook out great family fun for the day
Love going to monroe park
Very nice. It has a lot of shade. It is also very peaceful.
Kinda small, but beautiful in the evening when the sun sets behind the historic buildings, and older VCU college buildings
What does 8 million bucks get you in Richmond? A ruined park with all restroom facilities removed, the tree canopy destroyed, the pathways which are now condemned, a desecrated WWII memorial and no activities. So sad they did this to the park. The lease with the Monroe Park “conservancy” should be terminated.
It has a special meaning in my heart!!! When I was roughly 3 yrs the newspaper reporter took a photo of myself & 2 other children for the paper. We were kissing the statue that used to be there before the city changed it. But I like the openness of it along w/the gazebo.......still wish the statue had been fixed. It was there more than 50 yrs ago---it WAS a part of Richmond.
Super convenient and a cool place to sit and relax while exploring richmond
Been there a lot when I was a student at VCU, especially after bombing a test.
Nice and big park. Very close to VCU and plenty of restaurants. Great for dog walking, studying, and just relaxing. Coffee shop in the center of the park serving the usual fare. Very clean and well maintained. Overall great and convenient park
Monroe Park is absolutely fantastic since it was reconstructed and renovated not too long ago. The scenery is breathtaking and the environment is very peaceful, quiet and relaxing. Its a totally different experience than it was before being rejuvenated. I highly suggest visiting the new and improved Monroe Park as it is now a safe and scenic landmark.
Monroe Park is awesome. I was looking for a place close by to walk my dog, and this park has everything. It has places to sit and relax or do work, fun activities, and lots of friendly people. The city also manages the park very well and it is clean and neat. Overall amazing.
I love close and walk my dog here daily. Beautiful grass and fountain and always full of students relaxing, socializing and studying. There’s a cafe there with limited business hours and of course campus police center. The activity and lighting makes it feel safe, even late at night.
Ive been a Monroe Park visitor for well over a decade now. Youll hear a lot of people complain about what the city has done to the park most recently, but theyre looking at the situation with rose-colored glasses.Despite a few flaws, Monroe Park has been revitalized by Richmond and VCU. On a nice day, its filled with the bustling sounds of students and members of the community. Its now a hub where all types can come and feel safe.
The park is nice. If you like to go to parks, This may be a good choice. There are a lot of other things to do around the park. There are restaurants and even a theater were you can see a show.
Its the heart of VCU campus
Much improved, very safe and secure. VCU really REALLY did an excellent job cleaning up the place.
While the park is a much better experience than it was 3 years ago due to the park restoration project, theres still problems with it that I wish theyd fix; Including gravel path ways that rut anytime it rains and a central building with nothing more than a mediocre café. All in all, its a beautiful park for sitting outside and eating lunch, I just wish there was more.
This park is nice. We went there in the evening, there was a film crew filming some documentary, it is definitely a safe area to be in, I am always worried going into dark areas especially with expensive camera equipment.
A quiet safe daylight spot to share a coffee, talk, & read. Or catch some rays. The fountain is a very nice touch. Much better than it used to be.
Where are all the trees? Children playing? People serving? Why has this place of peace and sharing Gods love been destroyed? WHO US GOING MAKE IT FOR THE COMMUNITY again?
Fun park with a lot of awesome people everyday with two days every week that gives clothes and food and a lot of other kool things
Clean and refreshing I guess. The walkways are made of gravel that dip and cut into itself whenever it rains so its super inconsistent to walk.
I am so happy they reopened Monroe Park! The renovations are very nice, and it is a totally new place. And they have a great team of officers trying to keep everyone safe (thank you for your service). Great place for students to take a load off, and for families and couples to enjoy a picnic or stroll in the park!
Beautiful, peaceful park. We take our dog here almost daily. In the evenings, its a great place to study or read a book.
Really pretty little park. Great for a walk/break from the city, or for a picnic. There are also groups who feed the homeless here on Saturday mornings. Bag lunch in the park or hot breakfast across the street.
Beautiful place and very well maintained. Comfortable chairs around the fountain to relax and enjoy the scenery
Very clean and peaceful. A place to go read or to just enjoy the sound of the water from the
Beautiful and relaxing park, even a ping pong table you can play at if you take your own paddles and ball.
Only lost a star bc Lost So many trees!Imrpoved: water pressure back on at the house in the center to help with cleanup and good that Food Not Bombs os back feeding the homeless and poor students. Did you know you cant get food stamps when you go to university in spite of outrageous fees?
Is good
Just a cute fun little park in the middle of a hustle-bustle city.they host events here sometimes, recently had the heart walk. love when the vcu pep band plays here!its well-taken care of and clean.in the middle theres a building that has a cute little drink shop. havent had their coffee, but the lavender lemonade is good. bit pricey though ($3 for the lemonade), but what isnt pricey in richmond? theres also water fountains readily available and scooter rentals. theres also a piano for the public to play! so cute watching strangers fumble and lose themselves in the keys!
After a much needed renovation, it is more appealing than wired fencing and construction. Although, the design of the modern signs look terrible. It also saves me a couple minutes walking through it from Cabell library the engineering buildings.
Nice little park in vcu area Fountain in the middle.
Nice area to relax. A little washed out from recent rains
Beautiful patk conveniently located in the heart of VCU. Parking is also just a few blocks away.
The park is really nice since they renovated it. Nice atmosphere, plenty of places to sit and enjoy your day.
I still see some unsavory characters around, but it is a definite upgrade to how it was 15 years go. I remember it was to be avoided like the plague! Now it has a makeover with a fresher, cleaner look.
Beautiful old city park recently refurbished with support from citizens and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Large and beautiful park. I recommend bringing a blanket to lay on, a cold beverage, a book to read, and a friend to people watch with.
It look real nice out there...they really fixed up the place....nice and comfortable
I was there today doing the heart walk
Awesome park! Nice pit stop when going through Richmond.
Beautiful! I especially love the fountain at night.
Beautiful restoration. Love the tables and chairs and that they have restored the fountain.
The park contains a fabulous fountain. See if you can find it.
Nice to sit and listen to traffic, theres better parks downtown, no complaints
Must try the LAVENDER lemonade!!! I bought 2!!! Lol. Great place to enjoy some fresh air in the city!
The gravels on the paths is a little annoying. But, it’s much nicer after the renovation. There are chairs around the fountain, one can sit and relax.
Enjoyed the new look
Lovely quiet park at the edge of VCU. Great views of the surrounding buildings.
Its been redone well, and its nice to have VCU police have a substation there now.
Nice place to sit and get your thoughts together then hop right on the bus and go home since its close to a few bus stops
Our City Offers A Wonderful List Of Size & Views @ Each Park
Its a really beautiful place if ever in Richmond Virginia a must see
Beautiful park
Great spot in the middle of VCU.
Great park, very relaxing, comfortable. Love it!
Great park in the middle of VCU
Still Awesome
A quasi-public park run by a quasi-private partnership. Check out the coffeehouse and the quaint homeless menagerie. Aint Richmond cute!
Sure the park LOOKS nicer but holy moly they skimped out on a ton.
At night pretty ptetty
Love that they renovated this! Much cleaner and safer
What’s going on with this park??? It’s been fenced off since the Presidential election and never seen anyone working on anything. The homeless people use to make me feel very uncomfortable anytime I’d run by the park. I’ve seen them get chippy with people in my running group. However that’s a policing issue.Let’s get this park opened up if you’re not goi g to actually construct anything.
Nice place to relax or get homework done
Nice place to read outside
I remember Monroe Park in the 1980s when I was a freshman at VCU - it wasnt very pretty, and was even dangerous at night. But now, its been beautifully renovated and landscaped. The brick gazebo has been restored, the hardscaped paths are well maintained, and the fountain is clean and running, with lots of new chairs spaced around. It feels very European, tbh. Its definitely a good place to bring a book, or just people watch as thousands of VCU students criss-cross on their way to classes or wherever.
Doesnt feel like youre gonna get murdered anymore
The park is currently under renovation. This review is for what it used to be like. The park was generally dirty and full of homeless people. This would be fine if the park also wasnt so small. It did serve as a good place for local churches to hand out food to the homeless and its temporary closure has had a negative impact on the homeless community. The fountains didnt work. Students usually just used it as a shortcut to get to their dorms. This cross traffic resulted in the wearing down of the grass. Hope things are better when they reopen.
Very peaceful and well maintained
Quiet and had shade on a sweltering day!
Best place to be for site and safe and also some days people visit the park to feed people, I love that park,!
Good for chillin and makin connections
I caught a ditto in Pokemon Go here. He was across the street from the Cathedral.
Great place to play Pokemon go
Renovation brought new life to the park.
Lovely walkabout in central Richmond.
Very nice park
It looks better now
The park is honestly kinda dope, clean, and epic. Would sit in again.
I grew up here, in the city...Im so disappointed that they have completely fenced this park in. It is, right now, not available to anyone. This was a great place for reading in the shade of a tree, or playing ball, or catching Pokemon. It was also the place where several groups fed, and offered other services, to the immense homeless population. Its exactly that population that had always shaded peoples view of this park.Unfortunately, now, its completely fenced off from any visitor. I havent looked into the why...but I will.
Love it, just a step away from my job
The park has improved a lot.
As a former VCU student, I have a soft spot in my heart for this park. Its a good place for people to relax or play small-sided games. Unfortunately the park itself could use some love, and better care from the community that uses it.
ITS WONDERFUL!
Great place to pause, have a beverage, then continue my bike ride.
Historical and cultural events
The walk was lovely
Love this park. Were getting married here hopefully next year in 2019
