This is a FREE museum! I still can’t even believe it. You can donate and the run on donations. There so much history in this place it’s crazy! Because of Covid you have to make an online reservation but again, it doesn’t cost anything to do.We went first thing in the morning and we were the only people there. It starts off with a 15 min video of the survivors. Then you get to go on a self guided tour, room by room. One room leads into the other. It starts with how the Holocaust started and goes thru all the way until it ended and after. It also details people that helped and saved a lot of Jews, people taking in Jewish children and acting like they were their family to protect them...even as an adult who is knowledgeable on the holocaust, I was able to learn quite a bit. My kids learned a ton! We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. This is a must see if you’re in the Richmond area.

This museum is a very historic place. It will make you very emotional. As a wedding and event planner their auditorium is the perfect place for a reception. The view from upstairs overlooking the dinning area can be breathtaking if decorated right. We had the opportunity to do two event here. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. The museum itself is very clean. The caterer need warming towers as there is no kitchen and a limited food prep area

Make sure to schedule on their website before you visit so they can maintain social distancing requirements. There is plenty of customer parking. Plan for a little over an hour. It is free, but do donate. If you are into history you will love this place and you will leave a changed person I believe. Going back again soon where I can get some quality images

Ive known someone to claim to be a prisoner in both a Russian Gulag as well as a German Concentration camp. Though this encounter spiraled me into a direction of skepticism regarding the nature of the Holocaust (of which I should not reference here, as I believe the evidence of the atrocities of WWII and the evil German government has made quite clear) it has been important for me to recognize the narrative of truth, and those whom encompass it (I dont want some misguided idiot--such as myself once upon a time--to believe the deniers and think this didnt happen, because it did; however I do believe that the truth of what happened should be made apparent, and that might suggest that the narrative of WWII was hijacked by our government to justify their own evils during the war.) This museum doesnt try to sugarcoat the reality of what took place and I believe that anyone whom starts off at the beginning of the self-guided tour and believes that is sufficient for their perusal, is selling themselves short of what this museum is about; namely that it doesnt try to bluff you with fluff and mistruths, as you could literally spend hours reading the wall details that are plainly detailing important facts about the times leading up to the war as well as what took place. For what they accomplished I should say it is a true gem for anyone wishing to explore this time, in order to make sense of it. Thank you, and Im glad I donated $20, and wish I could do more.

My husband and I lived in Richmond from 2006-2010. We were very fortunate to get to visit the many museums, historical sites and monuments in Virginia and surrounding states. We were most taken by the Holocaust Museum in Richmond! Whenever our family came to visit, we made it a point to take them there so that they could have the same eye-opening experience that we had. We must have gone at least 10 times! This particular museum has audio guide, photos, and exhibitions that are engaging and really make you think deeply. It accurately tells the Holocaust history and stories and helps you to connect emotionally to the victims and survivors. It gives you as full an experience as possible about this atrocious occurrence. I have to say that for us, the best part of the tour was always at the end when Jay Ipson would come out and greet us and answer any questions that we had. He was always at the end like clockwork. He had such a charismatic personality and people were drawn to him because of this. The museum can understandably and rightfully leave a visitor feeling angry and sad about this part of history but after speaking to Mr. Ipson, you left feeling inspired and enlightened as well. We bought his book, “Izzy’s Fire”, in 2007. (I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Holocaust victims and survivors- You will want to read it, pass it on to family/friends and then read it again and again!) He actually inscribed it for me, which I think is so very special. I researched online and saw that he is no longer a part of the museum, which I find confusing and disappointing but I hope that he and his family know that his contribution and legacy has been left in the hearts and minds of the many people that got the amazing opportunity to actually meet him and hear his story.

This is a neat museum, and an excellent tribute to remember all those who lost their lives tragically during the Holocaust. Much of the exhibit still seems to be a work in progress (being some areas) were under construction. The automatic lighting or motion lighting is cool and energy efficient, but did not always work...so you have to dance around in the darkness before some of the lights turn on when walking through the exhibition. I would be anxious to return down the road to see if any improvements are made.

Telling and retelling the stories of the holocaust is no easy feat, but this museum does it beautifully. We have a huge responsibility in making sure that the holocaust is remembered and this museum is an important piece to the continued narrative that we (as a society) need to preserve. This museum was developed by survivors, and I found it particularly interesting that I could trace the threads of their stories throughout the museum. The museum does not hide the ugliness of the holocaust or sugar coat the dark side of the Third Reich, so viewer discretion is advised. Museum is free to the public, and funded on donations, so make sure to leave a donation on your way out.

This was a interesting stop on our trip. We didnt get the chance to make it to the National Holocaust museum, so we decided to stop in at this one. The self guided tour was helpful as you had the reference book to go along with each exhibit. You can tell that care was taken with each area to provide a detailed experience. Also, the propaganda exhibit on the second floor that was visiting was eye opening even for todays events. Not being from Richmond, it can be kind of a pain to get to, but it was worth the stop.

I have been to a number of Holocaust Memorials and Museums. This one in Richmond is just as powerful and just as evocative as any of the others. Similar theme, it starts slowly building up the history of Jews in Germany and Poland before video of Kristallnacht (the night of broken glass) and gets deep into the Holocaust.

Very Humbling experience. I enjoy many things about history always intrigued by the past events. I read books and seen documentaries on the holocaust, however, this museum had real life pictures and recreations of the horror they lived. Some were real as the were sent from Germany. It has always sadden me the way the Jewish were mistreated(which is putting it mildly), the thing that hit me hardest were the children who were shown no mercy, they too were starved and put to the same labor. There were some drawings the children did, and they drawn what they seen, Death, murder. Our children draw a house, a tree, their families, but this is not what these child saw or drawn. Whether you`re a fan of history of not, its a must see. Its free to get in and free parking!!

I am not sure if the people of Richmond or those of Virginia truly understand how impressive the building, the exhibit, the artifacts are. Just very world class - I would put this up there with museums I have visited in Europe and the rest of North America. If visiting out of the US, and you could only visit one museum, I would strongly suggest this Holocaust museum over the one in DC. Just, it is THAT good. You can feel how much emotion and energy went into trying to tell the stories of the people, the families, the victims in this museum.
