The gift shop is large and has a great assortment of museum related items. Dont forget to get outside and enjoy the grounds which has sculptures and other art pieces to enjoy.

Besides being FREE...yes, Free this is an amazing museum. Clean, quiet and cool you can leisurely stroll through room after room of mid-century, european, impressionist and wood-makers art expertly put on display. There are chairs and benches in perfect places to sit down and contemplate what the artist was thinking while creating his/her art. Rest assured during our one week in Richmond well coming back time and time again to take in every inch of this exquisite museum.

A wonderful museum. I was impressed with how many amazing things this museum has on display. It takes at least a couple hours to see it all. This is the only art museum I’ve ever been to for free and at the same time it is one of the best art museums I’ve ever been to.

They have an excellent collection including Faberge, a great deal of impressionists, and ancient civilizations artifacts. The exhibits that come through are always high quality collections. There are two dining facilities. One is more of a cafe and the other is more a kin to fine dining. I look forward to the VMFA Happy Hour returning and buying a bottle of wine to enjoy with friends in the lawn.

Absolutely a great place year round! Even though I no longer live in Richmond, I’m still a member of the museum and love the exhibits from around the world that the museum brings in. My most recent visit back to Richmond was specifically for this current exhibit Treasures of Ancient Egypt - Sunken Cities that will be on display until Jan of 2021. I highly recommend bringing family and friends here not just for the special exhibits that come, but to walk and explore the museums wonderful permanent collection. I could spend hours in here on a rainy day! Please visit or even become a member to take advantage of special member events and showings. Nothing better then supporting the arts!

I LOVED this museum! We drove down from Northern Virginia for a change from Washington, DC. This museum has a lot of collections. They may be small, but they are mighty. We really enjoyed our afternoon, seeing the whole museum. The cafe is so pleasant. Enclosed by glass on 2 sides, it looks out on the gardens, sculpture, stepped waterfalls, and people enjoying the sunny day. Right next door is the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. You can literally park at one but walk to both. IF you have the energy. We will go back for that. This museum obviously has some donors with big pockets.

Nice museum that Virginians can be proud of. Certainly worth a day trip. Has a very diverse collection of art mediums from around the world for its size. Doable in 2 hours if one focuses only on exhibits of interest. VMFA has a terrific collection of Art Nouveau and it was my first time to see that type of permanent collection, which I absolutely loved! The collection included Tiffany lamps and other Tiffany creations, my first to see those in person. It also has a nice Indian collection, another exhibit that is not common among art museums. The museum itself and the grounds are really lovely. The Best Cafe also has indoor/outdoor seating that views the sculpture garden which is very nice. Most museums tuck the grab and go food places away, but not here! The main disappointment for me was the paintings, the collection just seemed ok. It seems the museums highlights are its other art mediums.

The vmfa is a spectacular museum. we went to check out the egyptian exhibit, sunken treasures. it was a delight to see owns that were 2000-4000 years old. whole some things were quite worn, they were still spectacular to see. items that were in excellent condition were exceptionally amazing: sphinxes, osiris, isis, and so forth.the rest of the museum was a joy as well. we didnt see quite everything and the museum warrants a second visit. but we saw fabergé eggs, art deco and nouveau housewares and furniture, as well as contemporary art. they also have an assortment of ancient art as well.id love to go back and check out one of the two restaurants and maybe even sit outside to eat.

The most exciting experience Ive had. Ive always enjoyed ancient Egyptian history and now I finally got to see something that has been hidden from the human race for thousands of years. The earliest time that I saw was 670 BC to believe thats something hasnt been seen by the human eyes since then it was unbelievable. I was in awe at the detail as an artist myself at the miniatures of some of the pieces that I saw.

My 3 year old daughter and I had an excellent time. The museum provided sanitizer and masks at the front door. Everyone was following guidelines and I felt safe with my daughter there. The exhibits were amazing as always and although they are in the middle of reparations the scaffolding was up it was a minimal distraction from all the wonderful artifacts and paintings. Unfortunately we did not get a chance to see the new show about underwater artifacts, but we will be sure to return with time in our side!

Amazing museum! Their permanent gallery is expansive and incredible and their rotating galleries are even better! Richmond is my hometown and I always look forward to visiting my folks in RVA because it means I get to check out the new pieces on display at the VMFA. They also have a fantastic sculpture garden that allows for picnics and outdoor hangouts. Yoga is sometimes even hosted on the lawns! If you want to see where locals come to spend their free time, the VMFA is a great place to go explore! I absolutely recommend visiting on the Thursdays when they open their wine bar and host local jazz musicians.

History :The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has its origins in a 1919 donation of 50 paintings to the Commonwealth of Virginia by Judge and prominent Virginian John Barton Payne. Payne, in collaboration with Virginia Governor John Garland Pollard and the Federal Works Projects Administration, secured federal funding to augment state funding for the museum in 1932.Eventually, a site was chosen on Richmonds Boulevard. The site was toward the corner of a contiguous six-block tract of land which was then being used as an American Civil War veterans home, with additional services for their wives and daughters (the state having earlier acquired title in exchange for helping to subsidize the operations).

One of the best museums Ive visited, and it costs absolutely nothing. Many of the pieces are considered some of the best representations of historic artifacts (I imply that you could literally go from section to section and identify something youve recognized on the cover of a book or highlighting the best artistic example of civilization.) Several times I was surprised to find works of art/sculpture that I had no doubt seen at some point; whether it be a depiction of Mithras, a Roman cup with unique features, or a sculpture that you recognize from somewhere, and an amazing silver and Faberge collection. The museum is very calm with very little foot traffic, and is widely spaced out, so you could literally feel as though you were the only one checking out the exhibits.

Works of art across continents, time, and styles. You could spend hours in one room taking in all the aspects and details. The restaurant was very nice as well, with alcoholic drinks themed around the exhibitions. I had a Golden Phoenix and my mother had the Jade Dragon, we then finished with mussels in a broth with green onion, coconut, and chile! My only complaint is that the exhibit for the soldiers was overcrowded. You were stuck in a dark room with a sea of people as temperatures rose. When you purchased your tickets you chose a time slot, but this seemed to be unchecked. It kinda ruined the experience of it.
