James was an amazing tour guide! I highly recommend him if you are able to do so. He was very kind and considerate through the entire tour. Made our first experience memorable and full of laughs! He tells the history very well and he waits and always double checks that everyone is accounted for and can hear even if your in the very back! Thank you!
Fun for all ages. Our guide Macy was funny and extremely knowledgeable. Caves are cool, both figuratively and literally. You descend over 200 feet into the Earth. A lot of great side stories involved with your trip. Go and have a great time.
Really great tour, utterly amazing caverns to walk through… Really cool gift shop with an eclectic mix of crystals and rocks and various cavern and South Dakota related stuff.Try to get Adam as your tour guide. He was amazing. And as I understand it, he only very rarely loses people in the caves. And he never loses his flashlight... Unlike another tour guide who had clearly lost several flashlights.See things like the big room, the bottomless pit, the lions den, the chapel, the Buffalo room, the moonshine room, a whirlpool, and so much more. You will see a toad, you will see an alligator, you will see a gigantic snake… But is the snake really there? We still don’t know. The flood of 1972 changed, in almost indescribable ways, this cave complex… But it has risen from the floodwaters stronger than ever.
Great workout for those who enjoy small spaces and lots of stairs....
Tanner was a great guide on the adventure tour. Nice and cool inside the cave on a 90 degree day!!
A bit pricey for the crystal tour, will go for the adventure one next time. The tour guide is good but wish he can give us more time to take some pictures...
Excellent tour can get tight in some spots for a tall person. Claire our guide was excellent
Very cool place to visit. Excellent tour guide with a great personality. Highly recommended
If you can walk the adventure tour, I highly suggest it. The tour guide did a great job educating the group and keeping us all together. Plus he gave us tips on certain areas that are more slick or lower which we could run into. I would recommend a good pair of walking shoes and a jacket!
Had a wonderful time! Gift shop was a great place to chill before and after tour! The guide, James, was very knowledgeable and fun! Thanks
Our friendly tour guide Macey made this experience enjoyable with good stories and an explanation of the caves history. The long tour not be for some, as parts of it are narrow and low, so if you have physical difficulty walking, stooping or climbing narrow awkward stairs you may want to consider the short tour. Personally, I enjoyed it immensely. We had people from ages 6 to 60 in our group and everyone had fun. Definitely recommend.
Excellent and well worth the cost. Reece was an awesome guide! He made it even better with fun information and a little humor.
Pretty cool for a tourist cave. Spent 40-50 minutes underground and got a few cool photos. Id recommend it
We had a wonderful private tour with Macy! She did a wonderful job. Thanks alot
Easy to find enjoyable tour and refreshing cool but not cold I brought a sweatshirt actually worked a minor sweat so never used it I didnt time it but it was a hour tour
Fun and engaging tour for the whole family. Lots of nice formations to look at and our tour guide was able to answer questions and explain about the cave and it’s history in an entertaining way without being too silly.
This was a fun adventure. We had our kids, the stairs werent to bad. The tour we took was about an hour, it was perfect. Then after we had the kids sloos for gold, they enjoyed that. This took about 2 hours. It rained the day we were here so this worked out perfect for a dry adventure. I think it costs us about 78 dollars. We had to children 11 and under and 3 adults.
We had Rhys for our tour guide. He was wonderful and made the experience a blast. The cave was awesome.
This place is really cool. Caves are incredible ans guides are really nice and well spoken.
Really interesting and a tish chilly lol. Staff were all really kind and funny
Ethan was a great tour guide. Entire family enjoyed this tour. Thanks so.much!!
We found this place last minute and it was definitely worth it. Our tour guide, Rhys, made it such an enjoyable experience with all of his crystal and cave formations knowledge as well as his never ending jokes.
Interesting cave tour. This system doesnt have the huge caverns with lots of stalagmites and stalactites, but very cool. The tour guide seemed a bit rehearsed, but knowledgeable.
If I could rate this a zero I would.Firstly the tour guild was basically running. He left us behind and as we were catching up he was talking about the cave and he didn’t wait for us so we couldn’t hear him. Secondly he was walking and talking so fast we literally felt like we were running. We didn’t get to see much bc we were trying to not fall and as soon as we caught up we were on to the next room. Will not go here again.
Amazing.. our tour guide James was excellent..
Good place to visit. Just wear shoes. Recommend No sandels.
The guide finished the tour in 15 minutes LMAO, just wanted to enjoy our time.
Privately owned caverns. Not for the claustrophobic, but fascinating. Guide was a local high school student, saving for college. He was very knowledgeable, polite, and patient with my slower pace. I tipped him a twenty.
Ian gave us a great tour! Very cool experience
Caves are sooo cool!We had a great experience.
James was a great guide! If you expect to see stalagmites and stalactites, this isnt the place to go. Its a cave system that goes down 250 feet with lots of stairs. Have good walking shoes
Most of the cave is dead and the tour guide went so fast through the cave we couldn’t keep up or hear what the guide was saying. Would not recommend. We tried this cave because the cave we’ve gone to before was closed due to covid.
Enjoyed the walk through the caverns.
We were surprised how interesting this was. Great guide and very cool caves!
It was good, but guide needed to speak up and pronounceate.
Pretty cool, literally! Bring a hoodie or jacket. 50° inside the cave year-around. Hour long tour if you do the long tour.
Take shorter tour requires climbing up and down only 50 steps. Beautiful caverns and friendly guide
Our guide was awesome he made the trip so much fun.
A fun little side of the road site to see. The tour guides are fun and its a nice little work out!
Always have a great time going underground. Very nice cave and tour guide.
It was an awesome cave and they have multiple options of tours for you to choose from.
Great staff. Fun environment. Will return
Amazing!! Excellent tour guide...Colton!
Staff is friendly, interactive and was willing to answer any questions that you may have.
The tour guides are awesome
We had a awesome time! Great and friendly staff
You definitely need walking shoes if you take the long route. Tall people should plan on bending over took get through some of the smaller areas. Overall a nice way to send some time in your day. Military personnel get a small discount.
Friendly and informative staff. Fun tour for all ages.
Macey was a great guide. Made it a fun tour
Friendly staff, great tour (take the longer one if you can), beautiful cave with an interesting history.
For about an hour, a guide leads a tour through these caverns, lit by white lights at intervals sometimes down concrete stairs or sometimes slippery paths. This was an interesting tour, and great for kids to experience. This isnt a typical stalactite and stalagmite type of cavern because of the type of rock found here and the highlight was probably the River of Ages feature. We probably wont return to these caverns, but will try exploring others.
Adventures walk through the cave. Some tight areas and steep steps.
Great tour Rhys was young but very smart he new his cave history and had strong gem knowledge.
Choose the adventure tour. Though it might be tough for those over 55 to not bump their heads in a few parts lol. its super cool, no pun intended, and lots of stories, our tour guides jonas was funny definitely recommend. Bring a light jacket
Family loved the tour our guide Avery did a great job would go again next time we roll thru got lots of pics but none do the place justice must see for yourselves
Great place. ask for james as your guide
The tour guide was amazing shout information and answering questions. She did a job. The caverns are history and thats a passion for me.
The staff was very friendly and our tour guide Tanner was fun!
Nice cave, fun tour guide, nice little story behind it.
Very fun and tons of crystals. Our guide spoke and went WAY too fast but I just went my own pace.
We had a lot of fun here and our guide was great.
This is a nice quiet place, a little isolated, but an awesome cave tour and very friendly staff! The caves are well lit and mats and treads have been laid down to help with your footing.
It was neat and the staff was friendly...
Our guide Dylan H was great!Very informative, took his time explaining about and showing different areas. Kept a nice pace for everyone.Cave itself is awesome!Be sure to wear comfy non slip shoes and definitely take a light jacket. Especially for the little ones.
Took the Adventure tour with the family - everyone loved it!
Super fun for the kids, better then Wonder Cave lol
Were local, but sometimes we like to play tourist. This is a great adventure place with or without kids! (Kids under 6 are free!!!) We took the 1 hour tour and kept up. The kids loved the crystal dig afterwards!
Pretty boring cave compared to the others in the Black Hills and was the most expensive. Too many people have touched stuff and most of the cave is dead. The two pictures I posted we the only two cool parts of the cave. Our tour guide was not very good and didn’t know much about the cave.
Great experience, the staff was absolutely amazing and very knowledgeable.
Nice cave but no stalactites or stalagmites
We took too short tour with our grandson. It was nice but the young man giving us the guide once a little quick.
Was super cool... Tour was nice and informative..
Good choice for a cavern tour. You get to travel 225ft into the mountain and explore some pretty cool caves. We wished there were a few more cool looking crystals, but it was still a great tour. Also, you cant beat the cool 47-52 degree temperature in the caves when its 85 degrees or hotter outside!
Our tour guide, James, was extremely pleasant and provided interesting info about the caverns history and formations. We had a very small group of 5 people, so it felt like a more personal tour. We got plenty of time to look at the caverns features. We took the long tour, and it wasnt too strenuous. The cave is quite damp, however, and chilly, so a light jacket is helpful.
The cave was very beautiful. My kids are 9 and 3, and they enjoyed it very much. Some hard spots to maneuver in the cave, but that should be expected. Kaylee was our tour guide, and she was very personable. Will go again!
The tour was a good length, with some interesting facts. The downside was the price. It was pretty pricey, and after visiting Carlsbad, it was underwhelming. My kids did enjoy the tour, the main reason for the three stars.
Fun side trip out of Rapid City. Not a lot of unique rock formations but still interesting. Tour guide was great!!! Visited 8/26/2019.
This was our first time at Black Hills Caverns as a family. Having veryblimted time, we decided this would make the list of MUST DO!The staff were simply awesome. Daniel and the sweet young lady at the front desk were so kind and helpful to our little guy. Taking the time to answer a curious 5year olds questions and again, very patient.Must stop here if you havent yet. It was time well spent! The only regret I have is having not taken more pictures of INSIDE the caverns, as it was simply awesome. Especially for little ones who LOVE adventure and exploring!
We love it .
Or your guide was really funny and welcoming. The cavern was really cool. I lived there your, and all the facts
We had the most amazing time here. We brought our 7 and 12 year old daughters and this was their favorite of the caves we visited. We were in a small tour group so we were able to ask a ton of questions and learn a ton about the caves from our guide Hannah. It was obvious she loved her job and sharing the cave experience with others and she just made it so much fun for us all! After we visited the cave itself we chose to do some gemstone panning, which REALLY rounded out the afternoon.I highly, highly recommend Black Hills Caverns for families!
Awesome cave exploration for the whole family. Make sure to ask for James. Kid knows his stuff.
Pros: Not crowded, we were a group of three and only one other person joined us. Staff was all very polite. Cooper, our guide, was friendly and knowledgeable. The cave was interesting and the tour lasted long enough to feel like money well spent.Cons: We had a senior (60+) with us. We asked the front desk person if the there would be any crawling or other overly strenuous things in the Adventure Tour. She said no, but did not take into account our companion was over 6ft. They spent nearly every step of the tour bent over until we made it to where the Crystal Tour ends and they had to be let out early. Continuing on, we saw that person never would have been able to continue. If you have anyone that gets dizzy easy and/or taller than average, I would suggest a different cave.
Fun for the family.
Definitely a must see in ones lifetime. The adventure tour was definitely worth every penny and the kids enjoyed every bit of it.
Enjoy this place out in the forest. Good guides, knowledgeable and friendly.
Great place if you like caverns cant wait to go back not recommended for young children or first time cavers also not for large individuals or those with hard time walking...narrow areas and stairs but beautiful rare cave formations
It was cool to see and learn how it was created. We did the short cave and it was perfect for the kids.
I rarely write reviews, but this place has been one of the only places to find true, genuine customer service! The staff went above and beyond (even at their last tour of the day) to help keep our children (8,6,2) interested and entertained with the gold/gem panning as we waited for the next tour to begin (only 20 minutes or so). They were so apologetic even though we were thoroughly enjoying ourselves.Tanner is a hilarious and genuinely kind tour guide. He even carried our 2 year old down the steep steps!
Fun and quirky. Owners have enthusiasm for their caverns. Enjoyable casual hometown atmosphere.
Great little caverns
It was really good. James was very funny and new slot of information. He did a hreaty job
Terrific experience!
Our tour guide Jonas was great! Adventure tour was amazing.
