This is a wonderful place. It has beautiful colonial style gardens and several well maintained historic buildings. It is run by the City of Raleigh. They have a visitor center and give regular tours. It is located in the charming, quiet Mordecai neighbourhood near downtown. To me, it is a quiet place of beauty. It is not very big but I have not seen large crowds.
Interesting glimpse into early life of area. Self-guided brochure very informational. Guided tour also available.
A little gem of quiet, past time reflection hidden in the midst of a busy city! Step into the past w/the meticulously maintained gardens & property to learn a little of how/where Raleigh, NC got its roots. Extremely affordable admission and all the staff were so pleasant, cheery & informative. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and clearly loved her job. Even the multitude of varying birds seem to love living there as birdsong surrounded us on our lovely spring break outing. They even do school & adult groups. Only a small break out of your day to get the whole experience-well worth it!
This park is always offering more than you bargain for. For updates about what amenities they have, they now have a gift shop and area right beside the historic park.If you are in the mood and have a couple days, or hours, I would suggest taking the local trolley and going for the tour that they offer. The other things to do here include going in most buildings and also being able to go through the garden landscapes and also being able to just mill about the place. Other than that, your best bet is to follow your tour guide and see what they suggest for you!
Really nice park to see historic houses and the birth place of President Andrew Johnson.
Awesome Tour, well worth the time to visit. Amazing Raleigh History.
This park has so much history and its very quite interesting. Even though the visitor center was close due to covid-19 it was still a nice experience.
We visited the Mordecai House on a cold fall day but it was nice and warm in the buildings. All of the on-site buildings are climate controlled and the tour for adults is $7 and of very good value. There are a few older buildings that have been moved to the site from around Raleigh including the birthplace of President Andrew Johnson. The tour guide was incredibly informed and went into detail about each building and the occupants. As history lovers, we greatly enjoyed this. Everyone on the tour enjoyed it as well. It was a decent sized group of people of all ages. We were informed they do living history events as well and we will be returning for that too. Something we especially enjoyed was the fact the furniture and the other items in the Mordecai Home are 98% original to the house which is not usual in historic homes. The visitor center had a very well put together museum section too and that was interesting. The whole thing makes for a very enjoyable time out.
Wonderful to go for a run around this area!
Ive visited this spot twice to experience the Mojaa performing arts center Escape to Freedom reenactment. Tickets are about 12-15 pp. Families should definitely be apart and visit the indoor museum before or after the show. Great discussion piece.
Super neat. Could definitely use more plaques or something with the history
We recently visited this historic house & park. Even though the day was hot & humid, the house & structures are cool & comfortable. Our guide, Marissa, was superb! She had a large group (our seniors as well as a family with small children, etc) and she made the presentation relatable to all, interesting, and fun. She really seems to enjoy what she does and it shows. She made history fun!
Gorgeous park in downtown Raleigh with an accompanying trolley and grounds tour as well as a gift shop! There’s so much history in Raleigh, and although this park is just a small piece it is enjoyable and informative. I definitely recommend the trolley tour- the guides are friendly and the tour offers a lot of information about the past and the present. The grounds are small but the tour is worth it for sure. Also, to be noted, if you take the trolley tour the grounds tour is only two dollars more.

Beautiful buildings (almost all air conditioned which was unexpected) and a very nice tour. The tour isnt expensive ($5) and takes about an hour. Theyll run it even if its just one person which is very nice.
4th Sunday of the month, the church on the property is open for a singing congregation, very nice hearing them sing. Had a guided tour that was terrific, so much history. This is a must see in Raleigh. Walk the grounds too! Love the trees!!
Nice place to walk around on a pretty day. Went over there to catch the trolley and enjoyed looking around the yard and gardens. I did not tour the house, but everything looks well-organized and maintained so Im sure the interior is lovely as well. Trolley tour was excellent though!!
Fun day, learning new things about Raleigh. Tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly.
I was on the self guided tour. They gave you a handout with a map, description of each building and history of the property. Went at my own pace. Found out the Oakwood Cemetery was originally part of the plantation, so went there afterwards. Took less than 5 minutes to get there by car. Gives you perspective how large the property originally was.
If you love history &/or century old architecture this is a must! I visited on a weekday in the off season & wasnt sure what to expect. So glad I went. My tour guide was absolutely amazing & so excited to share everything she knew about the family, the house, the buildings... it was an amazing experience!! Thank you!! I will definitely be back someday with my daughter.
Amazing history I never knew about in Raleigh. Mostly original as used over 200 years ago.
We found this to be very a very fascinating tour and a great opportunity to learn about how Raleigh became the city it is today. The tour actually covers much more than I expected and the tour guides are extremely knowledgeable of the family history. In addition to The Mordecai house, the Park also includes the birthplace of President Andrew Johnson, the Ellen Mordecai Garden, the Badger-Iredell Law Office, Allen Kitchen and St. Marks Chapel. The tour allows you to see the entire inside of the house as well as the surrounding buildings located in there park. It was fascinating to see the architecture of the church and the amazing woodwork which you will never see replicated today. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Mordecai family sold off land, which was subdivided for the continuing expansion of Raleigh.A very worthwhile tour.Cheers!
I love the Escape to Freedom seasonal reenactments. Very emotional, bringing you back to what is was like to be a slave here in Raleigh, NC with historical accuracy. Performed every Fall!
Great place to visit and learn about Raleighs history! Also, I recommend you take the Trolley tour of downtown Raleigh, excellent ride! We lived the whole experience!
Very informative tour, definitely worth the money!
Great slice of history in downtown Raleigh. The are several buildings in the property. The buildings are full of antiques and the staff is very knowledgeable about the buildings and artifacts. On our tour the lady was extremely knowledgeable about the site and history in general. She was patient and answered our many questions.
A very impressive collection of historical structures.Easy to walk and enjoy the gardens and shaded walkways.Well worth a stop to see the 17th presidents birthplace
Really enjoyed this location and all its Raleigh history. Took the trolley tour which was wonderful as well as touring the Mordecai House. Wonderful.
Very nice little park in Raleigh. We had our wedding here in the little chapel.
I absolutely love this place.
This is a great, serene location for taking a walk and enjoying the quaint sites. Bonus tip: The house where President Andrew Johnson was born has been located to this park. Also, dont miss the old small town church. It can actually still be rented out for wedding ceremonies.
This was an interesting place good history. There could be more interactive exhibits.
The staff are so knowledgeable and friendly. I learned a lot about the history of the Raleigh area as a pivotal part of the history of slavery. Very relevant, important, and timely information.
This is a really cool piece of Raleigh history that Id readily accessible
Quaint park, the ghost of Andrew Johnson is a pleasant touch.
Beautiful ️ location and lots to discover
Today there was a recovery function at Mordecai Park for people in recovery, their families, workers in recovery, as well as people that were just interested in the knowledge of what goes on in recovery and how someone could receive help. And l had a nice time there!
Beautiful park. For Pokemon Go players, there are a couple gyms and a few pokéstops. There are regular tours through the historic parts of the park. Their landscaping and plant selection/display is especially pretty during March/April. I explored with my service dog and had little to no access issues.
The Bluebirders of Wake meet quarterly in the Visitor Center. It is a beautiful location and the meeting room is nicely equipped. The staff is helpful and friendly.
Disappointed in the lantern tour. It wasnt a tour at all, it was a fake story played out by local actors. This is not how it was advertised
We visited from out of town on a Thursday and found that the Trolley tours are only on Saturdays. Otherwise a nice tour of the grounds and house located here.
Nice little park hidden inside in beltline. As the name suggests this is a historical park, not a playground park. They were hosting a fairy festival the Saturday we went with tons of activities for the kids.
I’ve taken visitors on the trolley tour numerous times. It’s always adds a little history and extra interest to the visit.
Take the $5 tour. Its really educational.
Walked in herb garden and sang with shape note singers in the small chapel. Perfect warm, sunny spring weather! Beautiful and peaceful place to visit. Tour is definitely worth it!
Great collection of period bldgs - not as good as it was, better than it could be ... thanks for not paving over this one Raleigh. You should also see this one. End of Story.
It has a rich history about the family and depicts the way slaves had to live during that time period.
My daughter loved this place. She went here for a 3rd grade field trip. She enjoyed learning about the history of this place.
Great history and well done tour!
Had an awesome paranormal experience! The China cabinet doors opened behind me and slammed shut after I left the house. I want to go back!
Very knowledgeable staff. The guided tour was like trip into the North Carolina History.
Mordecai historic park is a great place to look at history. The park is really small but shows a different lifestyle that people lived. The trolley is cool to if you have the time. Also one of the presidents houses is their and I think its the 17th presidents.
Beautiful garden at the park
Trolley ride is very informative of the history of Raligh. A steal for 10.00
Nice historic park showing the oldest house in Raleigh and showing the history of the area.
Great house with dedicated staff. It was a great way to take a step back in time with a tour of the grounds.
Beautiful old buildings and gardens. Marriages in the church are quaint and beautiful
We went on the trolly ride which was very interesting and the guide was great. The museum we went to last year and just loved it, so we returned this year for the trolly tour. The trolly has really hard seats and the trolly gas/diesel fumes bothered me a bit but other than that it was very nice to listen and see Raleigh history.
This is a really cool place to visit. Located right outside of Downtown Raleigh
We took the guided tour and loved it. Great history lesson and we learned so much. I highly recommend it.
Great perspective on the early years of Raleigh. Great tour guides
The docent was exceptional - very well informed on every detail of this interesting historic home.
It was a lot of fun. Im glad someone thought to put a water fountain there.
Very interesting if you like history.
Lovely events, nice grassy area and historic buildings
Historic home and buildings on large estate property. Beautifully maintained/restored. Small garden farm. Lots of space to picnic. Not much on the way of signage to know what youre looking at.
Great Historical Site with guided tour! There are beautiful brick walking trails that are lighted. There several buildings as well as all types plants. Behind the main house one of the most interesting features is the kitchen garden and grape vines. There is also a Historic Trolley Ride stop just outside the front gate, for a small fee.
Very beautiful historic site
The function for recovery was great! However the bugs were real bad at that park!
We went to the Haunted Mordecai Lantern tour tonight. Everyone that went with us was very impressed. I cant believe this is only happening this one night. I want to go and tell everyone how great it was, but it wont do any good because its over already. If you have this again next year, I will definitely be coming. Great job. Loved it.
Great place to spend the day, has a beautiful visitors center
Interesting historic place...you can go on a guided tour!
Such a cute and beautiful spot. Small historic village complete with a garden and orchard. Brought home some fresh produce. They also run tours.
Very interesting tour, great Raleigh history.
Nice little park. Sometimes there are weddings here in the small church.
Pretty cool place. I did get really dizzy in the Law building. As soon as i walked out, i was okay again. Strange...something didnt want me there. The doll in the crib was really creepy with those pointy teeth. Would be fun to visit at night or on Halloween.
Love it! Amazing History.
We love this spot so much we got married here! Take a tour of the house and grounds, stroll the garden! Let your kids catch Pokemon! We love this park so much we got married here. The houses and grounds are maintained very well and all the guides weve used have been quite knowledgeable about its history.Come by and still the grounds, take a tour, have a picnic and relax. Its on the Raleigh Trolley route (starts here)...a great time if youve not experienced it yet.
Very picturesque historical park in the heart of down town Raleigh. Great place to take family photos and soak in some local history while you are there. Parking is limited but usually sufficient.
Great little spot if you like historic homes. It has a few buildings that were moved there so its more than just the one home.
Went here on my 2nd grader field trip in December. I was very amused on the history of the family and the home in it self. A lot of the original furniture from the Mordecai family is still in the home, in very good condition. The tour guide we had was very knowledgeable on the history of the family and home . I honestly had a good time. I will return with the whole family next visit.
This is a wonderful historical location in downtown Raleigh, but away from the hubbub of central downtown. There are trees! A bit more residential feeling. Property well maintained. We started there on a bus tour of the Dorothy Dix property so did not go into house. Other times have been there for Civil War reenactments, and the local Bluebird Society meets there. Well used, well maintained, loaded with history, and great to look at!
Beautiful park, much to learn about Raleigh history here !
Great historic place to visit to learn a peace of US/North Carolina History!
Great place walk around and relax with friends
Nice Raleigh Park that not a lot of people know about! Can walk around for free and look at some historic Raleigh buildings.
Great personal tour covering the history of the Mordicai family.
Stopped by with the kids while traveling. Great place for pictures. Grounds are open and its a beutiful site but not very well labeled so its not very easy to do a self guided tour.
Very intriguing!
Its was an awesome visit full of very interesting facts & history of the area. We did enjoy our time there.
Great place to learn about early, early Raleigh, NC. Beautiful flowers in the garden. The day we went, there were people in the Church and we heard beautiful music!
Had a great tour awesome house
This is a great historic site. The welcome center is well work the time to visit. I will go back and explore it more. It is worth a visit to learn more about Raleighs past.
Great little park, lots of family friendly events.
Interesting place if youre in to local history. I didnt like how several of the buildings were brought here from other locations though, kind of misleading
