A different experience.Enjoyable ride on the rail bikesDid the northern 6 mile route. There were some views of Narragansett bay, but also lots of just trees. It might be better once all the leaves fall if they are open that late in the season. There are two versions of the bikes a two-person version and a four-person version. But if you have groups larger than four they can connect as many as needed to accommodate your group size.Members of their crew clean up each bike before the groups go out.Masks are required while waiting to start your self guided tour and on the bus ride back (if a bus ride is part of the return) but you are free to bicycle without masks as only people in your group will be with you.

Here are some tips for a great experience: wear comfortable sneakers, bring sunglasses, make sure you eat a good breakfast, and use the bathroom before you go! (They have clean bathrooms!) We did this ride in under an hour. I saw a review that the bus was completely packed - which wasn’t the case for us. Every other row of seats had a “do not sit” sign. Overall a very clean experience. In the beginning it was a little chilly, but after 15 minutes of pedaling, you can start to peel back some layers and enjoy the ride.

After reading the social distancing regulations that Rail Explorers were requiring, I felt comfortable booking a ride for myself and my spouse. When we got there, we were seated comfortably at outdoor seating that was very much socially distanced from one another. It seemed that they were following the guidelines set forth and shared on their website, until it was time to get to the bikes. One aspect of the rail explorers (for the Southern route) is that we had to ride a bus to get to the area of the railroad where the bikes were located. The bus ended up being completely packed. Literally every single seat was filled. That was not mentioned on their website and moreover, they had a social distance seating chart on the bus that showed every other seat vacant. They were not following their own rules and there were several people who were pulling their mask down while on a packed bus.I added two photos, one showing the intended seating arrangement and one showing the crowded bus. I did blur faces to protect identities, but I would have definitely decided to NOT do the rail explorer if I had known that they were not following their own guidelines.

We did their NY location loved it and had to try their RI location. Due to COVID-19, only the lower loop is available till August 1st. Staff are so friendly, informative, and facility was clean and cozy! Not only was it fun for adults, but our kids (9 & 5) had a blast too!! The views were beautiful, after your 3 mile trek down the trails, you have a beautiful (approx. 20min) rest while everyone comes back and they turn the cars around. We will definitely be back to do the northern section.

Absolutely amazing! The experience was wonderful and the whole operation was held to extraordinary safety standards. People who were not keeping to expected distancing and safety requirements were gently reminded without appearing aggressively reprimanded. The ride was gorgeous and the water being next to you the whole time probably added to that. The wait at the turn around was pleasant and allowed time to watch people enjoy the water and converse with other explorers.I would definitely do this again. Well worth it.

Great family experience! All the staff took mask-wearing and other precautions seriously, as did all the guests. Ample space to social distancing, and clear signage all around. All the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The views were spectacular and the cars were easy to use. The ride itself is roughly 6 miles, and lasted roughly an hour. A comfortable air conditioned bus was waiting for us at the end so no waiting around at all.Since each seat has independent pedals, the kids didnt have to help propel if they didnt want to, and also wouldnt slow us down if they spun the pedals backward.Look forward to coming back in the future for sure!

Me and my friend did the day trip it was literally like going to an old train track and walking around it. There is only one good view and it’s when you’re passing the water for 2 seconds other than that it’s an old train track covered in glass that rides behind peoples backyards in the woods. It get super boring after a while I had a totally different vision in my mind and we drove 4 hours from New York to do this

A fun time, something a little different. The north one way route is very picturesque. Its a 6 mile ride, but goes by pretty quickly. We finished in about an hour and 20 minutes. Beautiful!! I was slightly apprehensive about this trip as I am not fit... but this was amazing! The weather was a bit harsh, though... over 90 and the sun beating down. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed the approximately 30 minute cycle to the scenic picnic sight overlooking the ocean, and we especially enjoyed the mostly downhill ride back! Bear in mind that the way to the picnic area is a much hard ride than the way back... Id definitely do this again, though I personally would like to go in a cooler month or at sunset for a more enjoyable, less dehydrating ride. Well worth it!

We had three 4 person bikes and rode down the rails towards the Naval Base in Newport.I didnt know we would be pedaling so that was a surprise. Rode for about 30-40 minutes then stopped for about 15 minutes while the crew flipped the bikes around for the return trip.We then rode back to the starting point. Not sure if I would return. Review №43

Do not expect staff to enforce mask policy. We went on Sunday, July 5. First, let me say that the ride itself was fine, nice views, and a novel outdoor experience. Normally, I would have rated it 4 stars. However, I have to dock a couple of stars for the fact that the mask policy was not observed. The social distancing protocols on the web site say, . . . all attendees are required to abide by each States Health Safety Mandates which includes wearing facial masks and remaining at least six feet apart. . . . Guests who do not follow these guidelines will receive one (1) warning before being asked to leave the premises. Sadly, it seems the staff has not been properly trained to deal with guests in these circumstances. Before we started, a staff member explained that masks are to be worn in the mask zones, including the start and end of the ride, but could be removed once we were on our way. Our group included a few guests who, while still sitting in their cart in the first mask zone, had their masks off, hanging around their necks. We were a couple of carts back and noticed. There were employees closer to them, and in front, so it must have been obvious to them, but none said a word.I discreetly asked a staff member to ask them to put their masks on while waiting. (I will call this employee S, as I dont wish to get anyone in particular in trouble.) S responded that most of the guests had masks on. I agreed that this was true, but they all were supposed to. S walked down the line of carts, by their general vicinity, and said to no one in particular that masks should be worn, in a conversational tone rather than a clear announcement. They were chatting amongst themselves, and I dont think they even heard S. This was disappointing, but I hoped someone else might speak up. We continued to pass by other employees on the way to the starting line, and none of them did. It was clear that the staff simply didnt feel comfortable about making a direct, polite request that guests should comply with the policies they had agreed to. I didnt feel at any personal risk, being far enough back, but what about other guests, and the people they come into contact with? The same thing held when we arrived at the turnaround point (this was the Southern Circuit -- the Northern Ramble is closed because they cant safely run a bus right now). Despite the Mask Zone sign at the platform, these peoples masks remained off, and no one even tried to remind them to follow the policy. We just kept our distance, found a cluster of Adirondack chairs, and enjoyed the view with a snack. For the way back, each party was called separately to board the carts, so that was good, though they passed close to the staff on the way. The rest of the ride was uneventful. Its unfortunate that the experience had to be marred by these concerns (any more than necessary, at least), and it leaves me with questions. Is the sensible policy there just to pacify potential guests? Did the people who wrote it not communicate it properly to staff? Does the staff feel awkward about making a polite request? Or do they fear that they will be called on to ask the guests to leave if they dont comply? This is not so much their fault as it is a management issue. Staff should be prepared with the wording and attitude they should use. Im sure almost all guests will comply if asked directly in a non-confrontational, matter-of-fact way. On the flip side, when other guests see that theres no enforcement, they may get more careless. All in all, I cant recommend this experience unless the social distancing policy is upheld as written. Rail Explorers is not taking enough care to live up to their social responsibility.

We had scheduled a ride a few weeks ago and were excited. The day before my daughter got a slight fever, below 100.4. Due to the pandemic, in an abundance of caution to prevent the spread, we called to explain the situation. Our only option was to reschedule for an additional 30%.I suspect this business has been impacted as have many others. I just cant endorse or support a business with practices that would benefit a family that would take a potentially sick child over a family trying to limit the spread in a state that is already seeing an uptick. So I would avoid them as most people I have talked to said they would have just gone rather than lost the money.

This was a very different, fun experience. 6 miles of easy pedaling, great, pleasant staff, and clean restrooms. The actual ride was relaxing, and enjoyable. Its not all great views during the 6 mile ride. There are some very nice views of the water, bridge, & nice homes but a good part of the ride is overgrown brush on both sides that obscure the water view or any view. But that was ok because I found I didnt really care about that as we were just relaxing with friends and chatting and getting an easy workout in a unique way. They do give you a little guide book which I wish we had paid more attention to while we were riding the rails because it wouldve answered some of the questions we were wondering about so do keep the booklet handy so you can check it. We will definitely go back again. Hopefully theyll be able to clear some of the overgrown brush on the water side at some point, that would be a great way to improve this experience.

Rail Explorer was a great unique experience. We went at the beginning of November, one of the last weekends they were open for the season. It did get a little cold while peddling back as expected as the sun had set but there were fires set up at check in and at the turn around point. Staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They do try to space out all the carts but we found during our trip it got congested quicker than we expected which seemed to make most of us go slower than average however I’m sure they have a tried and true method on how they order the carts. This didn’t bring down our experience though and I would definitely recommend including this activity during a visit or as a local

This was a different experience. We did the lantern tour which leaves at 7:30 pm. There was only a limited amount of views, which were great at sunset. The rest of the trip was surrounded by tall brush. At the end of the first 3 miles they had a huge fire pit for Smores and tables to relax before turning around and heading back. Anyway, there are several different tours and I think they can also go in the opposite direction on the tracks also for a different experience. Most importantly... I was worried if this was going to be difficult to pedal and it wasnt at all. There were 4 of us and even if we werent all pedaling at once, it was a breeze. Very light and smooth. Anyone at any age can do this.

Hi Yall,So you want to know more about Rail Explorers? Ok, in a nut shell. You ride and pedal rail bikes through some very interesting areas of the country. The one I did was the northern route in Newport RI. Beautiful scenery, Narragansett Bay is breathtaking, the homes you pass interesting, riding the rails is a great way to spend 90 min. Is it worth the money? Yes, absolutely. With one caveat. This experience is for people who are physically active. You dont have to be in great shape you just need to be relatively healthy with an active lifestyle. Me Im active but, my cardio is super bad and after two miles, (the northern route is six miles one way), I was cramping and winded. The southern route is three miles out and back. With a 15min break in the middle. I think I would have handled that better. Would I do it again? When Im in better shape, definitely yes! The staff is up front with you about what its like and they are very helpful. Great job guys!
