Ive been visiting this park, since I was a child. Pokey Smokey remains the main staple of this place, for me (as I love steam locomotives). But this is a cozy park. If you get here early in the morning, just as the sun is rising (around 8am), its absolutely beautiful here. The park has a nice view of the river, quiet fishing piers, a serene walking area through Friendship Gardens (again, beautiful in the early morning, as the sun light is coming through the trees), and much more. It also is good for exercising, as it has a bike path, walking path, tennis court, golf course and 2 playgrounds for families, as well as gazebos with grilling areas for cookouts.
I take my daughter here all the time and she loves it. 90 percent of the time its great. However sometimes things arent so great. People have a tendency to blast incredibly inappropriate music in the sit down areas. N words and f words ringing out as children run around playing. From time to time I see parents smoking and drinking literally on the playground with the kids. This is very seldom though. Its one thing to smoke on the benches, another thing entirely to do it on the swing sets and slides.
Portsmouth City Park is one of my favorite places. Plenty of things for kids to do. Its my favorite place to take pictures because the light is always good. Check it out
Since covid, we all have been feeling a little cooped up. Sometimes I just enjoy hopping in my car and driving over and just parking in the grassy area near the playground and looking out over the water. So relaxing. Im alone but not alone because others are doing the same thing.
The park has lots of open space. It is kept clean. There are picnic pavillions available for gatherings and piers for fishing. It is an ideal place to walk your dog with a clean-up station available. The playground area is well maintained.
Has plenty of picnic shelters and benches to relax or you can go for a walk along the water. It has two separate playground areas for kids (including a small section for little ones), a small skateboard area, volleyball net, and plenty of grass to run around in. It could use a little bit of clean up though.
Nice park! Lots of city workers on sight keeping it nice and clean.
First time taking some time to check out a new park. Nice walkways by water and other amenities. We would go here again.
A great old standby. We had lunch st the picnic shelters by the water. Then walked over to the skateboard park. It is small, but fun for young children.
Great place for family and furry ones to have a picnic by the water or just to stroll while holding hands with a loved one. Its just awesome periot!
Great park that is usually clean. They also have a train the kids can ride, not sure of the schedule for that though. I know it runs in the summer months primarily. There is also a golf course here accessible by the public at very fair prices. The driving range is nice and the carts are cheap. I would avoid the park after dark though, if you know what I mean. Great place for a run as well.
Great Park, the gem of Portsmouth. Tennis Court, Golf Links, Playgrounds for the Kids, Great Waterviews. Like to fish? A Huge pier and two smaller piers. Friendship Garden is a place to enjoy nature and possibly find a painted rock.Well worth a trip to see and take in. Spuds my Black Lab gives it four paws up in the air. Because he is on his back rolling. LoL
Spacious with beautiful landscaping with original natural growth w/boating pleasure .
Its clean, plenty of open space, water front boardwalk, skatepark, and 2 playground areas. A great place to go to relax and spend time with family outdoors.
Great place for people and animals love the fishing pier and the boat ramp
Needed to get away to clear my head and refresh myself I enjoyed walking along the water
Its a real nice park! Very clean and open with a great view of the channel. There are plenty of pavilions and places to sit and admire the surroundings. There are three playgrounds and a small skate baord park there too. Theres also a fun little train that takes you around a winding track. Its a quality train and track.Further down are ramps for unloading water crafts. The rest rooms are clean too! infact, I was surprised how clean they were. The park is definitely worth checking out!
Ive been going here since I wad born n love the place..........
I grew up coming here. An outstanding family place.
First time to this park. Nice playground areas for kids. Gazebos were clean and they had some historic monuments also. A little skateboard park also. Theres a fishing pier too for the summertime.
Great place. Lived in Portsmouth for almost 10 years and just visited
Beautiful location along the water and has activities for the entire family.
Beautiful little park. Very clean and peaceful. Lots of turtles and geese.
Brings back so many memories and knowing I can make some of the same memories with my kids is everything Great space for whole family to enjoy
Really nice park. Clean and well kept.
Loved it! Lots of space and clean rest areas! All handicapped accessible!
Play Grouds for Kids, Gazeboos with Barbecues Areas, Golf Fairways to Play, Boat Ramps to PORTSMOUTHRiver and Bay Area
Great place, so gorgeous, can get crowded but plenty of space
Great place to unwind.
Beautiful park! There are three playgrounds so any age can have fun. A lovely walking path around the water, golf, a small skate park, lots of picnic places and great views.
Great view. Nice playground and boat ramp.
Great park for families. Not the best spot for crabbing or fishing
Many of good memories here from childhood to fatherhood.
I rode the little train as a kid here. Now I bring my children to ride it. Priceless moments! Great place for family pictures on the bridge or family cookouts under a pavilion. They have a newly installed fishing pier. This park has a skate park a place designated for smaller children to play and the equipment for larger as well. A little bit of everything to do here.
Beautiful park! Great family friendly atmosphere with lots of activities for everyone!
One of the coolest, most beautiful parks Ive been to! First of all its a huge park! I was amazed to see so many play areas in one park, not to mention the sports club house area with a golf range and golf carts! The walking trails next to the water are beautiful. We enjoyed being able to stop and look out and look for the little crabs and sea life as we walked, as well as the other pond. Theres plenty of field space, nice shelters, a pier, just a great park to get out and enjoy, play sports, hang out, exercise, have a cookout or reunion, well kept, gorgeous place! Theres something for everyone!
We love Accrossfrom here the kids dad was raised here it’s came a long way compared to what this place use to be
Ive been coming here since I was born. One of the best parks for both memories and the actual park. Wonderful place
Great place to ride my jet ski
Sad excuse for a park dont waste your time there. Time is to precious to waste.
Great park. Beautiful setting.
Peaceful, Enjoyable a Relaxing place for my family & I to picnic or just sit & watch the sunset by the water...Beautiful!!
Good golf zCourse
Beautiful evening watching people out fishing on the huge pier. And seeing the sunset.
Love coming here to meditate
Playground, boat ramp, golf course, and picnic shelters. Also a small train that you can ride but have not seen it open yet due to covid
I always loved this park as a kid, and I still think this is a great place to have birthday parties and small events like that. I was here for my nephews first birthday, and he had a great time. He ran around on the smaller playground for a little while, and then his mom, my best friend, had found a little open area to have his actual party right behind the train tracks, and, IMO, it was the perfect spot for his little party
Cool park to run..some.lights were out
Nice place to hang out when your government allows you. Fun for kids and adults.
Great outdoor spot for a quiet lunch during COVID!!!!
Portsmouth, VA doesnt get a lot of reviews or high praise. But if you find yourself in the area visiting friends or family, take a short trip over to Portsmouth City Park. The park is small but quaint and family friendly. It is well maintained and clean, with the added bonus of a golf course, fenced in tennis court, boat launch, playground, and Sheltered picnic areas, on the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River. The entrance is hidden by an age-old cemetery, but be surprised by the peaceful reflection of the park when you get there.
Always a nice time with my son.
Not only are my grandparents buried here. But I enjoy walking through the park. Great place for pokemon go.
A very nice, clean place. The park department is obviously better run than the rest of the city.
Great for crabbing right now.
Gorgeous views and family friendly. I came by to people watch and take a lunch time out from reality. This park is well maintained and a soul-restoring break from the hectic pace of daily living. The trees, shrubs and flowers are beautiful and you can catch children stooping down to look at the flowers eye to eye then smiling back at their adult caregivers.
Good little course to play... course a bit rough but good for working on short game
We use City Park for launching our 20 boat most of the time. Most of the people who use the boat ramps have been doing so for years, and know the etiquette of waiting their turn and knowing which ramp is launch and which is pull. The 9-hole golf course is very nice and affordable. Weve not used the park for picnics, but the playground is nice for young kids and its a great place to walk your dog.
What a great place for a photo shoot. In my opinion, they could work on the landscaping a little more but, its a great place to be out in mother nature.
This course cost 17 to play 9. Its maybe worth 10 at best. Greens are just awful, very sick. Fairways are like backyard shots. Save ur money. Go to a reputable course
Kids absolutely love! Places for kids just to run around as well as swings and other things to play on. Also places to grill food or just sit and relax
Proof that there are actually a couple nice places in Portsmouth lol. I havent seen the train operate yet but I cant wait for our boy to try it out, thats just cool. What other park has that??
Great fishing on the pier...

Nice park! Had many cookouts here
Love the pier there...
Had fun with my niece Brooklyn
Nice park to walk the dog, with tons of open space, plenty of doggie waste stations, and a walking trail along the water. Just wish they had an enclosed dog park for the kiddos to run free! This place seems pretty well maintained, although you do have to watch out for goose poop near the bridge. Boat ramps, tennis courts, lots of picnic tables and grills and their volleyball poles have nets on them! I went on a Saturday and it looks like they even have a little train for the kiddos (the human kind) to ride on. Plenty of parking.
Didnt like the atmosphere, just an uneasy feeling, could be my senior age catching up to meIt is a very spacious park boat ramps, pier for crabbing and fishing, picnic tables, a lot of people were enjoying water sports....
My little dog and I had a lovely walk along the waterfront. You cant beat the views! They rival anything in Virginia Beach anytime. Great place to kayak also. Ive done that as well. The sunset tonight was spectacular. If youre a camera buff... Bring your camera at sunset!
This is a wonderful park for the entire family. They do a really good job of keeping it clean. You can bring your children to play on the payground equipment with a lot of seating for the adults . You can also bring the famiky to cookout for a family fun day.
Needs someone to pick up the trash.

The trees, shrubs and flowers are beautiful and you can catch children stooping down to look at the flowers eye to eye then smiling back at their adult caregivers. The seating options are generous enough that you just show up and sit down somewhere by the water most of the time during the weekdays. The picnic areas are always clean and the canopies are great for picnics. The seating is comfortable.I am a boat watcher so I enjoy the water people. They look so happy launching their boats and the children love the thought of being out there with the geese and ducks.Great alone time, friend meet up and family outing location. Selecting from picnicking, boating, playground areas, golfing, tennis, etc. is wonderful. Go, sit a while and enjoy!
Always clean. Just a nice place to relax or play.
It was peaceful and pretty. It also had a lot of fun things to do.
It has something for everyone to enjoy. Its clean and well kept. My grandchildren and I LOVED IT !!!!
Large area for playing, walking the water is relaxing and the kids love the train. Plenty of parking
Portsmouths most beautiful best kept secret! Stunning!
Beautiful park. I wish there was a track to walk by the water; just a dead end strip
Nice place to picnic
Hung out with some great friends, met a gentleman from the islands who was grilling chicken and turkey necks, and got a chance to play drums for about 3 hours!!!Looking at doing it again, next week!!!I have also been assured that everything that was grilled this past Sunday will be made... Better!!!
Fun fun and its a clean park
It was a beautiful day. We reserved the Twins. Plenty for the little ones to do. Wide open spaces. There were enough grills and seating. I didnt visit the bathroom on this trip. But my experience in the past has been that they are beyond filthy. Enough to make you cringe. Especially the Ladies room. And you may need to bring a roll of toilet paper with you. Otherwise, I had a wonderful experience.
I love coming here, just wish water quality was better in the area
I wanted to go fishing and my kids wanted to play. This park offered both attractions. The newly built pier offered a great fishing spot and the jungle gyms were a load of fun for the kids. Just wish we could have stayed longer before it got to cold. One of my favorite places to walk my dogs along the water. The park is usually pretty quiet during the week, the weekends are a lot more crowded. They just built a new fishing pier that people seem to really enjoy.
Great park. Kids love it! Just wish that they would maintain the kids area its missing allot of mulch and is too much of a drop from bottom of slide to ground. Easy way for kids to get injured but easy to avoid if paying attention to youre kids. Keep it up Portsmouth! Yall do a great job with our parks and us with kids greatly appreciate it especially us who grew up here.
Portsmouth City Park has everything one needs for a relaxing day outside. The amenities include a 9-hole golf course w/driving range, playground, public amphitheatre, picnic areas w/ shelters, the beautiful friendship gardens w/ duck pond, and a boat launch to the Elizabeth River. Its a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, sure to please.
We enjoy docking our boat from there and BBQS at the picnic tables but lately the park has been over flowing with trash and because of all the trash there are bees everywhere. Any other time we have gone it has been clean and a great place to enjoy the outside and family.
Peaceful, beautiful gardens perfect play area for kids and train.
The train ride was fun: relaxing for me and exciting for kids! You go around twice for $2 per person lasting 8 minutes.
A nice place. Not much area to ride on. Good views. Found a nice sitting area in the woods next to the cemetery !! ?
The surrounding cities WISH they had a park this nice.
Excellent time at the park! Had a chance to ride old smokey the train with my wife and boy. Always a great time for the kids making memories they wont forget. Glad the city decided to bring the train back. Be sure you pick up tokens for two dollars a peice first at the concession stand to save yourself an extra trip. After the train ride the good times continued with the parks new, upgraded play ground. The facilities have definately improved over the past few years. The park is once again a pleasure to visit.
What a great park! My family just recently moved to the area; we vistied here last weekend and we loved it! Playground equipment is in decent condition with shade and benches around, theres a golf course (we didnt try but its supposed to be affordable), boat ramps, a picnic area with pavilions and grills, walking paths along the water and of course the pokey smokey. It doesnt have the same hours as the park, so check the website before you go if the train is what youre looking for. My kids were so excited to ride this little train and they were not disappointed! It was $3 each to ride two laps around a pretty little track. The boys loved it.
Two piers at the ramp are unusable. Plenty of water and parking
