This is a part of New Hampshire history that most of us dont know about our acknowledge. We like to pretend that slavery was something that took place in the South, and that New England wasnt a part of that....While the Northern States did get rid off slavery sooner, it still happened here, and it needs to be recognized and remembered.Im glad that its remembered in Portsmouth, and that people cared enough to memorialize those who found their final resting place here.

A subtle and solemn memorial to African slaves who lived in Portsmouth, and whose memory was almost lost to history. The local community put a lot of thought and effort into the memorial, and the symbolism is explained in a placard on site. Well done.

Beautiful art work and very spiritual. It makes me proud to be a Portsmouth resident and to see the proud tribute to the original African Americans here!

Very poetic and moving tribute to African Americans who died and were buried here long ago. The graveyard had been built over and was discovered when digging began for a new development. The unearthed remains were verified an reinterred at this site which has been constructed as a memorial and place of contemplation.
