AMAZING!!! The people are so kind and informative. There is plenty to see and do. There is always area for kids to play with the trains and even a ride on toy train for infants. They walk you through the cars and explain and show several things and how some things work. Pictures of what Molly looked like before she was restored and an awesome track with 3 moving trains- through the mountains, over the river, and around the city. They were so helpful and showed my son the coal room and the engine room. Let him sit and helped him climb. Got to get some very nice pictures. Awesome experience.

Excellent place to visit! I hope this place stays open for a long time! The museum is in a set of train cars. Me and Andy X learned more about trains in this museum then anywhere else thanks to our helpful guide, Brian. We loved his model train layouts and all of his knowledge about trains and the history of the area. The staff there is wonderful. We will definitely be back!

Wanted to see the Navy Museum. It was closed. This was a serendipitous opportunity that popped up on maps. 4 Stars because it is a funded on a shoestring work in progress. Lovely history of rail in Tidewater and the USA. It is enclosed in partially restored rail cars on a siding next to the shipyard. Great volunteers. Lots of 19th and early 20th century artifacts and displays.

The place was great! A bit deceptive from the pictures and the description... there is only one train with I think three cars of historic pieces about railroading... Due to time constraints my son and I only walked around the outside of the train and snapped a few pictures. Staff was great. Would come back if we were in the area.

We were looking for a train museum to bring our son to during our vacation & found this online. What we didnt realize was the museum was an actual train! Our son is a train enthusiast & loved going into all the cars, the engine & the tender. He also enjoyed the model train layout. The staff was very friendly & knowledgeable. Toby the mascot dachshund was adorable & continued through the tour with us. They have train books, magazines & DVDs to take. My son chose a series of Lionel DVDs which was missing one & Diane very nicely offered to send it to him if she has it. We spent about an hour but the staff encouraged us to stay longer if we wanted. It was an interesting change of pace instead of the usual type of train museums.

Great place! We visited on a Saturday morning, we had the whole place to ourselves. The staff gave our kid a plush toy to take home with her, and the kids play area kept our little one entertained for awhile. There is ton of historical stuff displayed throughout the train, and there is a fabulous model train display.

Absolutely loved this place. My girlfriend and I went there a few weeks ago and it was amazing. The tour guide was excellent and one of the best tour guides weve ever encountered. He was very knowledgeable and taught us more than the past 3 mesuems had taught us. I would highly recommend this mesuem. It looks small when you pull up but it has so much to offer. Plus the great thing is they gave us 2 train books we will cherish for a long time. Thanks again, we cant wait to come back soon!

Neat little place with very friendly folks curating the collection of history and trains. Its tucked away in back but well worth the trip.Go there to see the vintage Norfolk and Western trains. Walk through a caboose, dining car, two mail cars and steam engine. Climb inside, look around, bring the kids. The last car is filled with an excellent miniature model train layout.

At first I must admit, I was a bit disappointed when we drove up to the museum. It was a lot smaller then I thought it would be. The pictures on the internet were very different than in person. There is limited parking spaces so I had to make my own on the grass. However, when I first came in, we were greeted very welcomingly.

Our party was given our own guide and he was very knowledgeable about the history of the train. However, it was small maybe spent an hour there. The kids loved it and were allowed to pick out a toy train before leaving. It was raining so we didnt spend much time seeing the restored engine.

Spent HOURS here talking to the volunteers! Toby (the dachshund mascot) is the best ambassador there is! Learn a lot and also gave information to add to their archives. My husband and one of the volunteers (Im ashamed to admit I did not get his name) spent time looking into the speeder at the location. If he would of had his tools with him Im guessing the two of them could have gotten it running! Great little Museum!

Took our 2 year old son here on a Saturday morning and had a wonderful time. Brian gave us a wonderful tour of the train that took about an hour. He was extremely knowledgable and personable. The rest of the volunteer staff were very sweet and did whatever they could to ensure my son enjoyed his visit. It was a fun experience for both him and for myself and my wife. We will definitely be coming back!

The train itself is the museum, which is a interesting way to go about things in itself. The thing that really made this place fun was how passionate the people working there are about trains. You could tell they really loved trains, which helped my 2 year old son really enjoy his time there.
