This is my favorite winery in Apple Hill. Not only do they have great wine, they also have a wonderful view. They let you bring in snacks to enjoy a picnic outside and free wine tasting if you are a member (dogs allowed too outside). They have a great selection of wines with red, white, and rose. I believe all of them are rated above 90 and a lot are above 93. I highly recommend this winery.

Lava cap winery has great views, friendly staff and nice wines. We located the place while passing by towards lake Tahoe. This place had cheaper rates for wine testing than most others closer to freeway. It has scenic view of vineyards and you can see birds, humming birds and enjoy your wine.

This vineyard is in a gorgeous location. We came in for a tasting near the end of day and the staff was very helpful, friendly and fun to talk to. They offered great advice and the wine is delicious. I recommend getting a glass and watching the sun set on the patio.

This seemed like a popular place. The parking lot was small and full. The views are gorgeous and there is plenty of picnic space. It was family friendly as well as dog friendly. Unfortunately I did not like the wine much but honestly I would go back just to have a beautiful picnic! Tastings were $5.

This was my first winery experience and I must say I liked it! Wine was excellent and I left with a bottle of their Zen. #loveit The kitty that was there was also a beauty to look at! I will definitely be back for more! Thank you to the nice lady behind the counter for the warm welcome!

Wifey and I walked in and Jennifer geeted us like old friends thank you for making us feel like locals the wines are all very good. What stood out was the rosè and the reserve zinfandel at least to us. Wifey said dont forget about the sauv blanc and the cab franc. All and all were so glad that Ashley from Due Vigne recommended Lava Cap and the Placerville area to us. Cheers!

The wines were great, the views were equally impressive, and the hummingbirds were just a bonus. This vineyard want originally on our itinerary, but was recommended to us. We were super happy that we were able to make to stop and were honestly a little sad to leave. I think we could have spent all day out on their patio. Next time we will plan for a much longest visit!

This place far surpassed my expectations. My family and I had never been to a winery, so we did not know what to expect. I was attracted to the place because I read reviews saying that the views were great. When we got there, the lady at the counter made us feel extremely welcomed. She went way beyond what we expected in terms of kindness and customer service. She made us feel like home (we even took a picture with her at the end!). The wines were really tasty, and you can have a picnic with the views were unparalleled. Prices were also very decent. Definitely recommend coming. Definitely worth the trip!

Place is very nice, staff is very friendly, wine is tasty. But. My wife and I feel poisoned after a bottle of this wine: headache, intoxication, etc. Im not sure whether all these wines produced by small businesses undergo thorough testing of chemical composition.

The wine was good but because me and my friends are in our mid twenties we felt that we were being ignored compared to the more older people surrounding us at the tasting table. This has happened to us a few times at wineries which is unfortunate because I myself work in a tasting room at a winery and I dont discriminate against anyone based on their age or appearance. They just need to work on not judging a book by its cover. I would have bought a few bottles of wine had they not treated us the way they did.

Don’t expect to get service unless you’re older. I went with my friend up to apple hill for the day because we wanted to do some wine tasting. It took us over an hour to have our 5 tastings and I assume it was because we are in our late 20s’. They would serve anyone who came in after us and gave them great service while pushing us off! I even signed up for there wine club and was still treated poorly. Then when I asked to taste a certain wine they would tell me no and serve us something els that they suggested. The wine I originally wanted to taste 1st was the best and I bought 3 bottles of it. Just very disappointed with the service that was obviously due to the criticism of out age.

I really appreciated thed fact that the server seemed to take great pride in her wines and providing a positive experience. She even revised our bill when we shared that we were staying at a local b and b that Lava Cap had a relation with. My only recommendation is providing more shade umbrellas out on the patio to maximize viable seating options on the typically hot and sunny days. On the day of my visit there were 10 tables for seating but approximately 3 shade umbrellas for the tables.

Lavacap makes great wine and has an even more amazing winery. The view is beautiful and recently my wife and I went back to enjoy their updated outdoor seating. The patio area has greatly improved. There is tons of seating of different types (chairs for couples, tables for groups, etc). However, I docked a star (I should really dock it two) because they are dog friendly. I get they are an animal loving establishment, but we tried to enjoy a quiet glass of wine on a beautiful fall afternoon and just felt like we were at a dog park. Small dogs everywhere, barking, fighting, wrestling. It was a little much for whats supposed to be a pleasant experience. Mix that with drunk people who are not exactly in complete control of the animals and its just... meh..Dont let that deter you from trying their wine. Its fabulous.

Did purchase a couple bottles of wine from this place only because we had been waiting for a while already and it was near closing time. We did arrive an he before closing time and didnt leave the wine tasting area until 4:50pm when we were done.I went to this place with my husband (this is my husbands account btw) this was my first time ever wine tasting so I was excited. We drove 2hrs to visit near by farms for our kids and really wanted to taste wine this time around. My husband searched online and found this place and it looked nice, I even called ahead of time just to make sure we could take our kids. The man on the phone was really polite. When we got inside the bar area and we waited patiently until there was an open spot. Let me just say we were the first ones waiting and we assumed they were busy with all the ones at the bar and that they never acknowledged us because of that. A spot opened and we walk up aswell as other girls that got there after us. The lady came up and attended them first, but they were only ordering wine so we were like ok maybe they had already spoken with them we were still at the bar waiting for them to at least say hi for 5min now and got nothing. Another lady walked in and stood behind us, the lady at the bar says may I help you sweetie? By then my husband whispers to me, I dont think they want to help us. Once the lady was done helping the other two ladies that came in after us we still waited some more as they all were attending the other people around us at the bar. (10 min had passed after that) Finally the same lady that didnt acknowledge us in the first place came up to us and asked what we needed. We told her we wanted to try the wine tasting and she asked if it was our first time there and we said yes. She gave us two glasses of wine and left. We waited another 10 min until another lady saw we were still there and finally offered a taste of the bottle of wine. By that time my husband had already left because he was so annoyed by the ladies not even attending us. My sister in law tasted wine with me instead. Needless to say everyone else that was around us got attended a lot faster than us, a couple beside us got extra attention and even a couple of free wine tastes because it was their first time visiting the place. We really felt ignored and not treated with the same customer service as the rest of the people that were there. Very gorgeous place but not very good customer service, please fix this. Otherwise I wish we could have left a better rating, very disappointed for my first time wine tasting. I strongly believe in good customer service first, otherwise it ruines the entire experience no matter how good a product, food etc. is.*** This review was made a couple of years ago, the owner of the winery did reach out to me and let me know how truly sorry he was for the experience we had at his winery and that the experience we had was not at all what his family stands for. He wanted to make it up to us the next time we went and offer a free wine tasting by him and a tour of the winery (we didnt end up going until this past fall) and the experience was night and day. I did enjoy it even though that at the time we went they were having a special event so we didnt get to have the tour, but they still gave us the customer service you can tell they as a family stand for... and as always, their property is just amazing as the last time we were there and our friends were enamored at their gorgeous views. Not only that, my friend I took apparently says that they have the best red wines in the town. Ive found that I like moscotos the best . (I dont know much about the wine and how to pair them with food and stuff but did sort of learn from her as she explained it to me) I thank Lava Cap Winery for this, and even if you are not that into wine or do not drink, I reccomend at least taking a stop by to admire their amazing view, its really gorgeous!

Beautiful vistas from the outside tasting area used during the Covid-19 madness at this El Dorado County winery on Apple Hill. Their Cabaret Franc was so delightful that I bought bottles to take home. The tasting and their wines are a fine place to sample, enjoy, and purchase Sierra Nevada Foothills wine. Check it out.
