I wanted to give this place 4 stars, but I just couldnt. It is a bit overpriced for what it is. There is honestly not much to the place and does not take much time to navigate through. We walked through twice just to feel we were getting our moneys worth. One other negative was the rude lady working the front desk. There really should be a friendlier person there as she is the first and last person people see as they come and go. There were some positives also. Most of the birds were very easy to see. The sloth, bald eagle and condors were favorites of ours. It being a smaller attraction would be a positive for an older person or someone having trouble getting around. There is a small snack bar, with a spacious place to eat. Bathrooms were well kept and the place seemed very clean overall.
A wonderful place with such beautiful birds! Its extraordinary to come with the family and enjoy the magnificent creatures. But at the same time its so sad that this amazing birds cant be in their natural environment...the humans have been destroyed little by little the nature...its so sad...I wish I could send them all free...
The place is quite small but I like how most of the birds are exhibited. It seems they have a better living condition. The staff are all nice and informative. Two hours should be more than enough to walk around slowly. Free parking along the W North Ave on the side of the aviary.
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Weve visited here before when visiting PIttsburgh and this year my husband gave me a Sloth Experience as a gift, so we went a few weeks ago. It was a great experience and I was especially impressed with those responsible for Valentino and Vivians care. It was clear these, and all the animals in the Aviary were treated with love and respect. We plan to go back for some of the other encounters they offer with other resident animals.
What a wonderful place! There were so many different birds to see! Loved the different habitats. The staff were very informative and friendly. The armadillo was, strangely, my highlight. Seems like an awesome place to work. The gift shop and cafe were a plus! A must!
A great place to for familys to go and learn about birds from around the world. They offer several encounters where you are able to meet/pet the animals. Several of the areas you are in a large enclosure where you walk as the birds fly in the enclosure with you. You would be disappointed after coming here its a really awasome experience !
Ive loved this Pittsburgh institution since I could walk. The place is amazing, interesting, and always amusing. Exotic birds are fun to watch close up!! We like the mammals, too. The staff are super nice. The building is covid clean and the majority of people respected mask policy. What could be bad about weird and wonderful birds walking right up to you or flying right past your head? Please get to the Aviary. The birds will be soooo happy to see you, and its better than sitting at home counting your bottles of hand sanitizer.
Well done!!! A great destination foe everyone. The largest aviary in the US. Fantastic, up close viewing of many species. Thank you to the employees.
Outstanding. Great fun for kids or adults interested in nature.Love how they maintain appropriate vegetation, humidity, and quality food for the unique species. Friendly and knowledge staff who are obviously passionate about providing the best life for these animals and sharing that passion with the public.
Love ️ this place. Such great people for such a great cause! Totally worth doing the sloth and penguin experience! The food was fantastic got the Greek salad. For the price totally worth it.
So cool! Tons of beautiful birds! Very relaxing. Sit on a bench and watch or play a game of look here- look there -wow did you see that one Ill def return.
A Pittsburgh gem, not that big but easy to spend an hour or two. Really cool birds and exhibits. There’s informative feedings/shows nearly every hour. Highly highly recommend for people of all ages! Unless you are afraid of birds then there’s 3 rooms you should avoid.
Me and my fiancee went to the Penguin Encounter today and it was great. Our presenter was Chris and he was great. Very informative. Cant wait to do it again.
Loved this place! It was quite and calming to stroll through and see all the gorgeous birds. I loved how up close you could get to the penguins.
The National Aviary is one of my favorite places to go. I have visited this “bird zoo” many times, including for general admission and for special animal encounters. If you do not mind spending the extra money, I encourage you to purchase the animals encounters for a personalized, up-close experience. Over the years, I have bought the armadillo encounter for $40 per person (yes, I know, not a bird, as they have some non-birds there), the sloth encounter for $99 per person, and a customized 3-hour VIP tour for $150 per person.
Awesome exhibits and some interactive feeding opportunities. The staff is very knowledgeable about their feathered friends and you can tell great care is given.
Loved this place!! Many beautiful, awe-inspiring birds to admire and learn about. The toucans, owls, and eagles were absolutely beautiful, and we got to see a Malayan bat take a poop! Haha
Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Beautiful exhibits with happy, cared for ambassador animals.
Great place for kids to learn... wish it was bigger but fun times
I love this place I come here often as Im a member. I usually walk through 3 times. The exhibits are immersive and the birds fly right over you. Love it cant recommend it enough. Kid fun and friendly.
Adding a recently built event center could only enhance the already beautiful venue especially for weddings.
Awesome place to see exotic birds. Friendly staff.
For anyone who loves birds and enjoys seeing and photographing multiple species - many of them rare and from other parts of the world - this is a great place to visit! It is well designed, with many areas to explore, so be sure to allow at least two hours for your visit. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Theres a cafe for a break, if you wish, and theres also a gift shop.As someone who is crazy about birds and opportunities to photograph them, I heartily recommend visiting the National Aviary!! Its great for families - children can really enjoy getting up close to many of the species. Be sure to check out the pair of Blue Macaws and, of course, the flamingos! Definitely a must-see place!!
Beautiful and relaxing...finch room was soo cool
Very nice place for families with young and older children. Interactive habitats, varieties of birds, indoors and outdoors. Good giftshop items. You can visit in cold and warm weather.
Very cozy place. You can spend 1-2 hours and enjoy to be a part of amazing bird world. They have different exebitions with live birds - tropical world, rainforest, tiny birds and so on. Resample prices - $17 per adults and very well maintained place. They practicing social distance and have a lot of sanitizer stations.I would definitely recommend this place to visit specially with kids.
This is a special place! Truly a Pittsburgh gem. Its amazing to walk through the rooms with birds flying around you. One of my favorite experiences here is the feedings. Its so fun to watch the penguins easy fish or watch the lorikeets eat nectar. Their always trying to find ways of making the experience more immersive.
National Aviary exceeded my expectations. From the feeding of the penguins to the wide variety of birds. The gift shop had an assortment of souvenirs which my daughter racked up on. We will DEFINITELY come back on our next visit.
An enjoyable day out. We saw lots of beautiful birds and even got to see Wookie the sloth out and about.
A lot of fun, its open air do there is nothing between you and most birds. Very empty due to timed entry.
An incredible opportunity to watch and be close to birds you might not otherwise get to see. It’s lovely to see them fly around. I’ve been several times and enjoyed each visit. I could spend the entire day just in the Grasslands room sitting quietly and watching the beautiful birds go about their day, I absolutely love it.
Pricey AF but i enjoyed it. Never thought too much about birds before, but it was nice. They had a live demo with a few exotic birds for us and plenty of open rooms that make you feel like you are actually in the jungle
So many awesome birds in open environments. Its amazing to watch the so close up. They are also doing a wonderful job keeping the crowds low and the place extra clean
This place is incredible. We love coming here. Our little one had a blast looking at all the animals and learning about where they are from. The cafe is very reasonably priced. I was shocked to see how reasonable the food was. And its actually good! We well definitely be coming back.
Its truly beautiful there. I wish there was a section all about the birds in Pittsburgh. There could be more information on the birds as well. You can walk through the whole aviary in less than an hour. Make it worth the price of admission. Its worth the trip if you are a bird lover!
Very nice aviary! Exhibits are extremely open. Easy walk through lay out. Has cafe. Parking fee. A bit small, but reasonably priced considering birds are not cheap to care for. Would recommend.
Small but cute! The birds are well taken care of and its a good place to visit with family and children.
We went to the aviary during our staycation. It is very clean and, other than the bat area, not smelly. We spent about an hour and a half visiting all the various exhibits. We saw flamingos, snowy egrets (my favorite), eagles, penguins, a condor, finches, canaries, and many other species. It can be really noisy when the birds get excited. After our visit, we spent an additional half hour strolling around Lake Elizabeth in the adjacent park.
Such a wonderful place especially for kids. So much interaction and you get so close to the animals. Would highly recommend
Such a great date spot or a chill spot for those with kids. There are birds here which dont even exist in the wild anymore. Be sure to plan for the penguin feeding and the hanging with the bats exhibits !
Awesome place. Well taken care of by the staff.
It was kind of expensive considering you cant feed the birds and the dining area is closed but it was fun
Really fun with lots of scheduled activities, the workers are very helpful and nice!! Great place to go
Great place! We really enjoyed our visit! Some people have complained about the size in the reviews. No, its not huge but I felt that the price was reasonable for what we got to see and how much we enjoyed it. Obviously if you dont really like birds you might not have a good time, but if you do then check it out! One of our favorite parts was watching the flamingos fly around part of the aviary and get close to us. This isnt something you get to experience at a zoo!
I love this place so much; I wish I could live in this aviary
Such a wonderful experience. Beautiful birds
The staff are amazing and so accomodating and educating. The flamingo encounter was great!
A fantastic bird watching experience at a reasonable price. They have a good variety of birds in interactive exhibits as well.
The National Aviary was clean, organized, and the birds seemed healthy. However, we were through the entire place in an hour. The crew that were at exhibits didn’t seem eager to share information about the birds. If you really love birds, it might be worth your time and money, but it wasn’t for us.
Lots of birds to see, multiple exhibits such as tropical birds, penguins, and more.If you are planning on taking pictures, make sure to bring a cloth to wipe your lens in the tropical room as it is hot and humid the camera lens will cloud until it reaches room temperture.
The National Aviary is a place of education and fun. The conservation, the attention to detail, and friendly staff make the National Aviary a great place to visit. Not to mention the stars of the Show the birds.
I love the aviary! ️
I had an amazing time!! The Aviary was beautiful! It was so clean & neat & the staff were wonderful!!! Tickets aren’t at all expensive, and neither is parking! I highly recommend taking a trip & visiting this gorgeous aviary!!! Absolutely loved it!!!
Loved the Sloth Painting Experience!!! The staff was wonderful!!! Cannot recommend enough!!!
Pittsburgh should be proud to have a national institution and the only Aviary at that! love the penguin exhibit!
There are lots of birds here. If youre into birds this is the a good place for you.
Small place but is adding an expansion. Close up viewing, birds flying over your head makes for a great experience. Lots of employees were wiping, sanitizing and cleaning. Loved rhe penguins. We will go back.
These people truly care about the birds they keep and are willing to educate you every step of the way. The staff is extremely friendly and the atmosphere is immaculate. Each habitat is has a great variety of birds and is accurate to their real surroundings. There is an equal representation of species in each section. We paid the extra few dollars to see the sloth presentation and got more than we expected. The incredible trained birds that are part of the story made for a great experience!Bring a small pair of binoculars (or buy some at the entrance for $8) and/or bring a long lens. You will find hidden birds among your surroundings. NoI would recommend a particular wing (no pun intended) but theyre all great. A must-see for anyone.
Pretty cool place in North Side. Only went because my family wanted to go, but it there is definitely a lot there to see and experience/learn. You get to feed certain birds.. and i believe you have the option to interact with other birds (a sloth someone told me, but i cant verify that). Can be pretty pricey, but in my opinion its worth it.
Birds were awesome! Fed lorikeets, watched the birds get fed in the Wetlands exhibit. Staff were all very knowledgeable. All the birds looked fantastic.
Very nice place to visit. The sloth visit was slightly expensive.$100 for 30 minutes. You could t even hold the sloth. The animals were amazing and they have a nice gift shop too.
Really great and neat place to see !!! If you like different kinds of birds and interaction this is the place to see.. fun for the whole family.
I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding here and this is such an amazing location for any event! They brought out a penguin to interact with the guests during cocktail hour. There is a park right next to the ceremony location for a couple to go over and take portraits. Everyone was very kind and the entire day ran so smoothly! I would love to photograph another wedding day here and would absolutely recommend it to any couple looking for a unique wedding venue in Pittsburgh!
This is a great place to see some rare wildlife and birds you wouldnt otherwise see in a zoo or out in the wild in North America. They have engaging exhibits, good educational materials, and a variety of different display areas, most of them fully indoors and climate controlled. You can see everything in the course of a leisurely afternoon, and most of the exhibits are indoors.
Great place for family. Kids friendly. Sloth is pretty cute over there.:-)
We had a nice time, beautiful rare birds.
Its a wonderland.... The rainforest and wetlands has more than 40 species of birds, different plant varieties. Visitors are allowed to feed the birds. Volunteers and people guide us well. There is an entry fee of $17 for adults. Membership is also available.
Fantastic place. Love those any kinds of birds and it was my first time seeing those lovely birds.
My only complaint was that a lot of the facility was undergoing renovation and exhibits were closed. They could at least offer a discount. Parking was tight.
As the only stand alone aviary in the nation it is a must see. My wife made a great friend with a male flamingo. Grand kids enjoyed the sloth and penguins. I love the bald eagle.
Went here on a lark (pun very much intended) and was very surprised and impressed. Lots of birds from all over the planet and they seem to be living and being treated well. Would go again!
Smaller than I thought it would be but I had a great time!
Small-scale but packed with varsity and beautiful examples of birds and other animals.
Wonderful place for all birds lovers.... Could observe extremely cute and beautiful birds very closely. Also I really enjoyed feeding the toucan. It needed additional fee, but worth it. Highly recommend to both kids and adults.
This is such an amazing place, and its clear that the staff really cares about the well bring of the animals!
The Aviary is a great place to go and be surrounded by nature. The feedings that they offer are a great way for the kids to get involved. The reason for a 4 star review is price. Even after paying to enter you have to purchase most shows on top of the membership.
Great family experience. Super informative and knowledgeable docents. Stop in and be sure to check the feeding and experience schedule. Don’t miss the Sloth.
I enjoyed my time at the aviary; even though it was empty & quiet due to covid19.
Neat place...the animal encounters are really fun, worth the price (and it supports their animal conservation mission)
The environment was really nice. And on my second date with the guy Im getting to know
The most beautiful thing Ive ever seen before
Amazing for bird lovers and theres food!!! Good for children and its pretty relaxing and sometimes quiet
Variety of birds inside and outside, they also have bats, sloths, and armadillos. They have a food court with pretzels and that kind of stuff. There is also a gift shop.
It is a wonderful, clean place! It is a little bit expensive but its worth it!
Love coming here! Ive been about four times and I never get tired of all the beautiful and fantastic birds flying (or waddling) around. A lot of exhibits are open air, so you have birds flying all around you. Definitely feed some lorikeets and the birds of prey show is pretty amazing. Everyone Ive brought here has loved it as well.
A unique place to take the kids for something fun to do. Lots of birds and activities for them to view and participate in. The staff is polite and knowledgeable about the wildlife. The gift shop is a tad overpriced but that seems to be on par with all of the other zoo/animal places in the surrounding areas. Parking is on site and convenient.
Our family absolutely adores going to the National Aviary. It feels like you’re in a totally different place the moment you step inside. The exhibits are educational, fascinating, and it’s very clear the animals and environment are well card for. The staff goes above and beyond. I needed to nurse my three month old daughter and a staff member opened up a private room and was extremely helpful. We had our picture taken as a family at the Aviary around Christmas time and it was so special. It’s a fantastic place for a day trip!
Number one place we wanted to take our granddaughter to! She loved it. Especially the penguins!
I had no clue that this was located in Pittsburgh but it is an absolute must. It is not very expensive and it is a wonderful experience that isnt too time consuming. You could potentially get the opportunity to feed a Tucan while you are here. Many of the birds are surprisingly social, so it is a lot of fun. It beats going to the bird section of the zoo by a long shot.
Lots of interesting birds and plenty of information about care, feeding, and protection. Admission is a little high but at least its going to a good cause. If you want to see eagles, penguins, and tropical birds up close I highly recommend you visit.
The events to feed and spend time with different birds are worth the visit all on their own! Building is smaller than I expected but has a surprising variety of birds and small habitats. Very friendly and knowledgeable employees and interns. Food in the atrium isnt terrible and has good portion sizes (same as standard restaurants). Price to get in is very reasonable too.
I did not except to have that much fun at an over sized bird cage but it turns out this was a great way to spend a morning in Pittsburgh. There are a few birds on display in smaller enclosures, but most of the museum is made up of large ecosystem rooms where the birds are free to roam around with visitors.I had a bird flying right by my head within minutes of being in the museum. And we saw so many interesting and beautiful birds that I had never heard of before.Definitely worth a visit.
My son (and his now wife) got married here last weekend and it was amazing. The Aviary did such a great job of having the venue look amazing. The staff were all awesome and the grounds and fall decor made for BEAUTIFUL views....pictures look great.
I liked it. Lots of free flying birds, a lovely tropical space and even a sustainable landscape exhibit. My only issue is that any shows etc., cost extra. Its worth it just to go to the different spaces and have bird flying all around. I loved the finches!
One of my favorite attractions in Pittsburgh. So many species of birds from around the world. SOAR! is definitely worth it if weather permits. There are other fun activities such as feeding. The offer summer camps, which are fun and educational.
Absolutely beautiful place to go spend an afternoon at whether youre alone or with a small group
Glad I took my kids here I have good memories of coming here as a kid. So much more in there now than when I was young. Great exhibits, staff is friendly, the place is kept clean and easy to navigate. You can go through in a day and they have a cafe inside to get a bite to eat.
Awesome place, great and knowledgeable staff. Had the Hawk encounter, was just awesome!!!
What a great place to visit - I must do with your kids if you come to Pittsburgh
