Beautiful park dedicated to our fallen heroes, not a real park in the traditional sence or benches, grills, playgrounds etc.. it is a somber, sober experience overall..
I took another look for any positive items to mention but found none. Death Valley is more fitting than Valley Of The Sun for those with the bad fortune to have to rest here. I hope it wont be a long time and with the restoration of our down town revitalized and active could build a highrise and relocate the unfortunate stuck there too long already. Devils island wont be a good name as it has never gotten water or trees. Death yes water no. Like the good horror movies perhaps the fence (most expensive item there) was built to keep them from getting out. It cant be to keep people out. It is too hot and dirt without shade or comfort. Not much is even tought to onlookers. I dont think anyone can drop in and visit or study the past. What a waste of space and our very history by many brave pioneers.
I want to love this place but it’s unnecessarily sad and disgraceful to me. These people frontiersmen and war veterans. It’s probably gated all the time because of the close proximity to homeless shelter, but Phoenix should hire a security guard. As with other cities and capitals, Phoenix probably doesn’t want to advertise it’s homeless problem. But it’s a cultural opportunity lost.
Per other reviews, I have NO idea what being Puerto Rican or Irish has to do with this facility and there are definitely NO swings or play equipment here. Its a gathering of 7 CEMETERIES where our AZ pioneers are interred. Its desert landscaping is in keeping with the desert we live in as the pioneers did. Its a lovely facility with many shade trees, benches for sitting, great to consider hosting events. LOTS of history on the gravestones remaining. Much preservation work is needed and clearly is in progress. The Smurthwaite House at this site is a true gem! Tours of the house and grounds are given by VERY knowledgeable volunteers. Highly recommended!
Very quiet fenced off to keep everyone out. No chance to enjoy history of Arizona military here. If your loved ones are here from a past long ago there is no chance to say a few words in prayer or visit grave side to lay down some flowers. The fence keeps everyone out and a few markers near the fence show the dates from the 1800s. This is the most ill kept dirt bag cemeterys I ever saw.Death valley would be a better name than valley of the sun for this unkept eye sore. Perhaps Devils Island except unlike that place not one drop of water was ever near this patch of ground to grow a single bit of shade. Perhaps that fence is so formidable in the event any of its occupants come back to life like so many horror movies and find that to be the worst cemetery in America and not want to stay another minute.
What a beautiful and historical cemetery. Worth a visit to see the headstones. Some over 100 years old. Just be aware of the homeless people milling around as there is a shelter just up the street.
We came here for a volunteer event to help clean up and rejuvenate the cemetery by planting trees, pulling out weeds, and picking up debris. It was a great event, but as for the cemetery itself, theres a lot of rich history. The caretakers (who were very kind and helpful throughout the entire event) were very knowledgeable in not only the history of the cemetery and those who were buried there, but also of the history of the entire area any how things have changed over the years. There were a lot of interesting things in the area to take a look at with lots of great stories.
You can feel the gentleness of all those who have passed. Its a peaceful place to go. I enjoyed the quietness there. And if you need to charge your phone. Up on the hill where the names on the wall are. If your facing East look to your left that round piece of concrete will the pillar. There are 4 plugins at the bottom of the pillar.
Went there for an ice cream social. Ive been there many times before and it is a wonderful place to visit. You get a chance to learn some of the history of old Phoenix.
The administrators and volunteers are enthusiastic. They all work diligently to provide a accurate and exciting experience on Memorial Day
Historical burial grounds, for veterans and is well maintained
This place honors Arizonas heros that sacrificed their lives for their country.
Ive already submitted a review... but I havent changed my mind any.Its a wonderful place to find peace.
I met my wife here. That’s right, we met in a cemetery. True story.
Its a very well kept graveyard.
This is a common cemeteries where it is Hot and dry. Company. around much going on. Looking. . . . R.I.P
Just a great place to go pay my respects to all of the people who protect the United States of America ️️️️️️️️
Unable to get access to my family grave site. Disorganized for those of us who would like to pass on our family heritage to our family.
Its an honor to be able to pay respects to our comrads
Great place to walk among our early pioneers.
More history to learn about then you may have time for. The ACP guides are top notch and have a passion for Arizona
Good Park low ratio of homeless and drug dealers I brought my young kids here to hang out for a couple hours. nice place. My kids enjoyed the play area and jungle gyms that are there... surprisingly slippery slides and new rubber seats on the swings... I notice those kinds of things... especially if theyre lacking :-)
Incredible history! Worth the time and donations!
Saturday, 7 APR 2018, Five star even though the cemetary gates are always locked. I love visiting cemeteries. Learned from the website that there are 7 cemetaries which remain closed to the public except on certain holidays. Rather unfortunate but understood because of the efforts to keep the large homeless population from setting up camps in the cemetaries. This homeless situation is a disgrace for those who live in this way and a disgrace to Christians and to governing factors who allow it to be perpetuated. Hope that soon this will be rectified to allow the homeless to live more humanely and to allow the general public to again freely enter into this historical site.
Old unappreciated, in Middletown of home less my area
A great step back in time, make sure to spend some time, a lot of local historical people now reside there.
Volunteer at the cemetery. Something anyone would really enjoy and it would be greatly appreciated.
Its crazy old.
