This is hands down one of the most unique places Ive ever been. Ive always loved the city of Philadelphia, and knew it had history and a beautiful depiction of the arts...and Magic Gardens takes the cake.I honestly had no idea what to expect when friends mentioned visiting, but I didnt expect the building to be designed as it is (literally from floor to ceiling), especially when you first walk up to the building. Very unique use of talent. The last time I visited was in 2010, and I still talk about it to this day. I cant wait to bring my husband and children when we fly back home.
This is just a wonderful Philly treasure. Great for first-time visitors, long-time residents, singles, and families. Great photo ops for beginner photography students. You dont have to be an artists to appreciate this beauty hidden away on South Street. Support the arts! Most of it is outside and the staff is COVID-19 compliant. TIP: Purchase your timed ticket ahead of time online.
Very interesting lot with artistic mosaics and sculptures strewn about. Definitely walk through the entire set multiple times to catch all the artwork and hidden messages laid around the lot. It can be a very short or prolonged experience depending on how much you value looking at the art pieces. Probably not best to bring kids here.
This was breathtaking. Whether you take it all in at once or in bite size pieces you have to appreciate the artists mind. Absolutely fascinating. Took about an hour for my experience. They are currently only allowing 10 people in at a time which makes it quite easy to take lovely pics with no one in the way.
This place is amazing. It seems small on the first loop around. On the second loop you realize you could spend 12 hours here and still miss something. The artist that created this has a level of drive and patience I envy!
Amazing experience. Great east coast road trip to socially distance. Limited entry, into the exhibit and controlled entry for the inside. Could visit this place 100 times and find new, unique and amazing things hidden. Recommend to anyone in a 2-3 hour radius from philly
Not Harry Potter magic but magic all the same. Love this place. I do a lot of travelling due to working in the IT industry or rather I did. This place is the perfect get away and helps me center when Im back home!
Philadelphia Magic Gardens Parking is quite easy. We found street parking during the day during the week and were able to use the fantastic Park Mobile. Get that app if you don’t already have it! There is also a parking garage across the street for even more convenience. Photography is permitted as long as you don’t rock a tripod or light stands. There is a lot of foot traffic through the space, so you definitely should be respectful of other visitors. It’s great for engagement sessions of 2 people and wedding couples but would not recommend this location if you want a bridal party or for family sessions. From the moment you enter the front desk and pay for tickets, you notice that the staff there is charming and friendly. Several staff members keep an eye out to make sure you don’t touch anything or set up a tripod to shoot. However, they are very laid back and courteous and answered all my questions I had about the Philadelphia Magic Gardens. I loved this place and definitely check it out if you are you in South Philly!
Being sold out for the day at 10 am with virtually no one on the property is a bad business model. Regardless of what is going on for 2020. The lady at the front gate could have been a little nicer. But it is what it is. Move on to other attractions in the city.
Wonderful experience. Best place to hangout. Must see place for the art lovers. It was very pleasant to see all the mosaics at one place. One of the well-known locations in Philadelphia. The staff are friendly and cooperative. Ticket purchasing is easy and they are very affordable.
If you like art, this place is awesome and a must visit if you are in the Philly area.
What an amazing artist. So happy to see this work. It made a wonderful back drop for senior portraits. Will def be back. And something that should be in your Philly south Street must do list.
You could hurry through this amazing place, but then youll miss the little whimsical jewels. Among all of these big displays are little found objects that are affixed into the nooks and crannies. Every little thing seems to have a story to tell. Many tiles have letters and they are placed into rows that make interesting sentences. You can try to take photos, but its just not the same as being there. When you walk by the mirror fragments, youll be immersed in a fairy land. What is clear and what is a mirror? The boundaries arent as clear as you think. Its a work in progress, and it changes with the weather, so youll want to go back sometimes.
Love this place!! Highly recommend for those who love and appreciate mixed media art
Something new to see at every turn. They are selling limited online tickets & friendly staff did a great job enforcing social distancing. Clean bathrooms, lots of hand sanitizer & saw staff cleaning common areas.
Truly a hidden gem in the city. Amazing! Small, but amazing. There are a few sidewalks and store fronts nearby that are also covered in mosaic. Went in November and it was COLD! There are set times/tickets to buy. If you have to wait or use the bathroom, I would go to the grocery store across the street or the Starbucks a block or so down. (You do have to purchase something to use the bathroom)
One of my favorite places in Philadelphia. I go here at least one per year, and it is never boring or repetitive. I absolutely love this place both with a camera in hand and without. Sometimes youll get lucky and see the artist sitting in the garden as well! Dont skip the indoor rotating exhibits either--they are always wonderful.
Pretty cool place honestly. The mosaics., the art, just crazy how it was all out together from floor to top. You have to be really artsy tho. Because if youre not about it. Youll jjst walk in and out
Excellent work and excellent customer service. The whole experience was great. My car had been hit and damaged im a hit and run and the whole ordeal was upsetting but they made the experience less stressful, kept me updated, and explained the whole process during the initial phone call.
Super unique and pretty cheap experience. The people there are nice and it is a must see. Make sure to make reservations with Covid as the capacity has changed. We went through the area about 3 times and saw new things everytime.
An absolute must see when on Phillys South Street. Wonderful display of lighting, textile, and mexican folk art. Thank you for a delightful experience.
Beautiful place! Pet-friendly, too. Every corner is a piece of mosaic artwork.
It was very interesting but no more than $10 a person should be sufficient!
We got the tickets online (the only way to get a ticket), there was no option for military discount. When we were at the store ( in our way out) we saw a sign saying that they offer military discount, we asked about because there wasn’t this option on the website, there was student, senior, adult, kids... but not military doesn’t make sense exist this option and not be with the other ones. The guy told us we had to type and search for it with a voice tone like we should have known this, “dã” ~ rolling eyes~ they need to fix their website asap, also we paid 15 each, Google says 5-10 tickets, they need to update that too. I think 5-10 would be a fair price.
This place is beautiful! seemed smaller than I expected in terms of space, but theres so much art within the mosaics to see. Staff was super knowledgeable: I had great convo with one woman about the process the artist used to create the space which was awesome. Highly recommend
This place is amazing! It’s not huge but there is SO MUCH to look at. It’s so pretty and a great place for pictures. The longer you look, the more you see!
Its a unique place and pretty artistic. You do need the artist mind to get the depth of things but $10 general admission seems a little high ti me. The guided tour would still be a better deal considering they take you around the neighborhood as well.
Very nice place. Recommend for everyone.
WOW! Incredible mosaiced house and gardens...pure wonderment! Absolutely amazing....one delightful surprise after another no matter where you look. So sorry we didnt have more time, but its very crowded on weekends. Want to go back when its not so crowded and spend hours walking around....probably still wont see everything but then we can always go back again and again and again....
Very colorful and vibrant. Its amazing how huge this artwork piece (pieces) is. Must see
Excellent staff, and honestly this place is an experience unlike any other. Just walk through and let your eyes and mind wander!
This place will truly blow your mind. Every turn you will notice something different, some unique characteristic, which will make you question ‘why’ while smiling and enjoying it all. Truly unique experience!
So quirky and fun! Definitely would recommend. make sure you order tickets waaaaay in advance.
I paid $15 and it took me 10 minutes to look around. Because of the pictures on the internet, I expected some wide area with arts but this place is very tiny, just the size of small house. But, the arts were interesting.
Great place to walk around and enjoy the art. $10 ticket per person, even the bathroom is decorated nice. You can spend about 1 hour here and enjoy the views. If you wear a backpack wear it on your side or in front of you. Have fun!
Cool place to visit. Lots of spot for picture.Better to buy online ticket ahead to reserve your visit time. Sometimes ticket may sold out.
Beautiful and exactly what my soul needed. This eclectic art installation is a must see on the list of Phillys cool places to visit. You need several hours to thoroughly enjoy all the nooks and crannies of The Magic Gardens. The inside gallery also features displays from other artists and was enjoyable to leisurely work our way through the exhibits. Buy tickets in advance if you want to go at a specific time, we didnt mind waiting, but the weekends are busy, so plan ahead b/c only a few people can go in at a time if you have a large group
Awesome beautiful go amd take the kids
What a cool space! Very beautiful and relaxing! Easy to book your reservation online. Friendly staff. Plenty of photo opportunities to take advantage of!
Space of inspiration and a must see when in Philly. Located on south street, home to a number of great bars and restaurants. The gardens captures the livelihood of the city. Grab a meal to go and sit under the pine tree and ponder about life. Best way to enjoy it.
A must see if you are in philly. this place is a gem. the artwork is so beautiful
Definitely magical place, cant wait to return with my family and friends
It was an amazing experience. Its a great place for people of all ages.
Beautiful place to art lovers
When looking for this place, I suggest you turn your GPS on and let Google Maps guide you. The place emerges to your right all too suddenly when youre driving down South Street, where the Magic Gardens are at. Slow down as you near them. Parking generally has to be right on the street to the side. Metered parking. Just add 50 cents or something. But then remember what you put in because the police loves to ticket people around here.Anyway, the place is great. One of those really unique sites within Philadelphia. Most tourists just ignore it because its so far away form all the usual touristie stuff. Dont be a fool. Go for it. Youre going to love it.They have a nice little cafe inside. Go have a snack there!
Lewis Carroll, J. K. Rowling, and L. Frank Baum used words to take readers to incredibly creative alternative universes. Isaiah Zagar uses his art to create an equally unforgettable world.Zagar built an outdoor labyrinth of bicycle parts, handmade tiles, folk art statues, colorful glass bottles, thousands of mirrors, and found objects. Walking up, down, and around his massive outdoor art installation, which takes up half a block, is indeed magical. It’s a consuming, three-dimensional piece of public artwork. Mosaics on the walls, ceilings, and floors create a topsy-turvy ambiance akin to Carroll’s Wonderland, Baum’s Oz, or Rowling’s Hogwarts. The indoor gallery houses exhibits of mosaic, folk, and visionary arts. Tours are offered on weekends at 2 p.m.
This place is amazing. This man definitely had a lot of time on his hands. Some of the art reminded me of some of Sigmund Freud. Definitely a place to see.
Loved it! I do recommend visiting when it is sunny. it makes the place more beautiful when the light is reflected by the glass and mirrors. Also buy tickets ahead of time!
This place is exactly as described - magical! You can buy tickets in advance or you can buy them there. I left with goodies from their gift shop because everything was beautifully handmade. You will really enjoy this place! Its absolutely amazing.
Nice place to have a good time ....the vibe inside is really awesome. So many art things are there and it is really creative and impressive. A must visit place in Philadelphia .
We were stuck in Philly for the day after a missed connection and I found this while looking for things to do.It ended up being really awesome. We got there at 12 and the next time they were selling tickets for was 1 so we got those. The outdoor exhibit was my favorite part. I liked all of the stairs and doorways. There were gardens too and everything is mosaic. It is really well put together. There are also two exhibits inside. Even the bathrooms are mosaic. If you have free time while in Philly, I highly recommend coming here! They also sell tickets online in advance so you dont have to wait when you get there.
Beautiful place to take the family or a date for a quick trip.
This place is AMAZING! No description csn be put in to form you NEED TO GO to experience all of its beauty the artist created..$10 to get in and legit could stay for hours. Small indoor space most of it is outside
Such an interesting juxtaposition to the city around it. Very crowded. Get there early as tickets will sell out.
This is a cool local treasure; definitely worth checking out during a visit to Philly. It is, however, on the small side. Depending on your pace, you can easily walk through in under 20 mins. You should also be prepared to deal with loads of folks taking pictures in just about every nook and cranny. Thankfully, just about everyone is nice so there shouldnt be an issue either waiting for someone to get their shot or else being asked to take their pic for them.
Checked their pics, nothing special to be amazed at! i think they sell the word MAGIC. And the herd follows rightly!I will not go there.
An artistic spot in Philadelphia full of beautiful designs and multiple spots that are perfect for photos. I recommend buying tickets online beforehand so you can choose the time that you want to enter. You can also buy tickets on the spot but it wouldnt be for that exact moment but a time later in the day. The area is actually not that big and everyones trying to get pictures so it can get difficult to get pictures without people in it. However, with some patience, its possible. Its definitely a spot to visit.
Of course this is a MUST to go if you’re in Philadelphia So much Art! I love it I recommend book your tickets online... they are sold out really quick.
Gorgeous & interesting! Friendly helpful staff. Tons to see here, definitely check it out!
This place needs to be experienced. I was intrigued by the interesting murals throughout the city. Take those murals multiplied by a million. That still doesnt compare to this site.
One of the more overrated sights. It looks like a pretty junkyard. Its small and repetitive. Fortunately, it is cheap to get in. One visit if there is nothing else to do would be ok.
Absolutely gorgeous. I knew it would be closed when I visited after work, but it was still so neat to see from the outside! The area is fascinating too.
Absolutely loved this magical little garden! Learning about the artist who created this masterpiece and the struggle he went through was truly inspiring. There are photo-ops everywhere and the space is huge - definitely would recommend!
This place is definitely a visual feast! Filled with creativities by combining shapes, colors, and substances that are usually taken for granted. We took tons of pics in the garden and sometimes you even had to wait in line to take pics at certain places. To tell the truth, after a while, you might get a little visual fatigued and overwhelmed by all the colors and had to get out of there :)
Pretty awesome place to hang out, look around, and meet people. My daughter and I did the scavenger hunt which was a fun activity and kept us engaged in the experience. Always a new sight to see on each of the 10+ times we walked through the place. Souvenir t-shirts were cute and reasonably priced.
One of my top-10 spots to visit and revisit in Philly. Everyone should see Isaiahs wonderland on a sunny day and then come back, as we did, for a Twilight Garden party visit. Then, come back again to do the special basement tour, where most of these photos were taken.
This place is truly magical! it is great for all ages, you just have to be careful with younger children so they dont end up breaking anything or hurting themselves. The tour lasts around 30 minutes, it is a relatively small place to see bit there is so much happening that you will spend all that 30 minutes taking pictures and wandering around. Try to buy your tickets online so you font have to wait for a long time at the doors. I highly recommend this place. Also some of their art work is sprinkled around the city. If you dont have the time to visit the place itself be sure to check the city art at least.
A must see in Philly. Cool art gallery! Beautiful eclectic art installation. You can just imagine that it is made from scrap..empty bottles, plates, bicycles, etc. I recommend before going, you have to purchase your ticket online.
Great place to visit. Came here with my NYC peeps. I wanted to show them off a bit of Philly and it was a great day planned out. Great spot to take pictures and at a great price. Takes a max of an hour, really at the most. The art here is a must see, go and enjoy, and take lots of pics! ️
Beautiful. I felt a sense of community and a longing to turn the everyday into something more.
Absolute AMAzing its hard not to be in awe of the creativity and passion put in to this epic art work and mastery craftsmanship. You will be pulled into the attention to detail as well of the emotionally characteristic of the use of colors. They have a 3d virtual tour on there website that does it best to give the sensation of a live experience walk through. But trust me when I say it leaves an lifetime lasting impression with actual being present. Its also in an over all great area a Philadelphia. So it your ever in the area for what ever reason pencil in a couple hours for a visit here at the Magic Garden you wont be disappointed.
Worst $15 spent. Don’t believe the hype. Rude management and store clerk, talk down and look down to paying customers. Very cold interaction as well. Front personnel where nice, except when leaving one person slung the rope open so fast and hard it made a loud noise, it’s like they just wanted people to get out, again very rude and bad vibes.
Ive been here twice but I still dont think Ive really captured everything there is to see here. There is so much amazing art and it is all so delicate and creative and beautiful. Mosaic art is just incredible and just looking at it all and thinking of how it came together and all of the effort that it took is fascinating! Come here and check it out.
Philadelphias Magic Gardens is a non-profit organization, folk art environment, and gallery space on South Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. To date, it is the largest work created by mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar. The Magic Gardens spans three city lots, and includes indoor galleries and a large outdoor labyrinth. The mosaics are made up of everything from kitchen tiles to bike wheels, Latin-American art to china plates. It’s a beautiful place to take great pictures, the tour of the area lasts approximately half an hour.
Really special but if you don’t have the sense of art, you can just take some pictures outside instead of paying $10 ticket. BTW, dont go there when the temperature is high, you will feel too hot to focus on these art pieces.
Very interesting place to see a different form of art. This is an entire building dedicated to art of glass bottles, glass, plastic and other garden things. I was amazed at how much art was in one building. This is a main building and a side yard that has stairs and tables. There are people starting around that are able to answer questions you have about the art. They were very informative. Would recommend
Very cool Art! Could stay here for hours looking at all the cool pieces.
The Magic Garden is a crazy, fascinating art creation, for sure! Its important to take your time to search out all of the little things tucked into the mosaics -- and to also stand back now and then to get the big picture. Plan to spend a good 90 minutes seeing the garden and walking nearby streets to see how the artists work extends through the surrounding neighborhood in all directions. (He is currently adding mosaic surfaces to the ground and walls of his home parking area adjacent to The Garden. Wrap up by taking a walk along South Street and into some of the nearby streets filled with beautiful, historic row homes.
If you like art as I do youll find an appreciation in this place. It might seem small but there is so much detail in everything. Definitely worth the money especially if you take time and truly look and appreciate the art and hidden gems this place has to offer. Clean and very friendly staff let me in on student discount even though I didnt have my student ID on me.
Eclectic and wildly different art experience for those looking for something fun. The entire interior and exterior areas of the garden and associated building are a canvas for artist Isaiah Zagar. There is so much to see that it is hard to take it all in during one visit. Garden guides are knowledgeable and helpful, so dont hesitate to ask them questions. Note that the site is not entirely accessible.
This place is beautiful, make sure to bring a nice camera. Call ahead of time to find out show times. The shows start approximately every 2 hours.
This is a very cool place to visit. The only con is that it is not as big as I thought it would be. You could easily finish visiting this place within an hour. There are some indoor exhibits in addition to the outdoor ones. For those of you not that interested in art, it may seem a bit boring as the design may seem repetitive, but I dont know if you will ever come across some place like this.
While visiting Philadelphia my friend took me to the gardens. The artist really put a lot of time into the creation! I believe his work is very abstract and full of color. We walked around and stayed for about 25 minutes. If you are walking around this area, I definitely suggest stopping by.
Fun little gem on South Street. Special, unique, interesting. Great for pictures. They have timed ticketing for a reason. Least crowded is :15 - :30 after the initial rush and before the next.
What a gem! Absolutely beautiful...very cool mosaics.
This was our second visit to the Magic Gardens -- every time we visit I notice something different. Its really a special place. During this visit, the artist himself was sitting in the garden, chatting with a group of school kids. Super cool!
A mysteriously wonderful place with bright-colored pieces of artistic objects put together. My wife and I went here during our vacation. We were awestruck by its designing, color, and architecture of the museum. Particularly, it was fun to explore and walk inside the monument outside. Definitely recommended for first-timers in Philadelphia.
This is a really inspiring space that defines the neighborhood. You sort of feel like you are in the artists mind. I appreciate how he combined his own pottery with found objects. The exhibit put it in the larger context of place art. You can wander around for a few or pay a little more for a tour. I hear the artist wanders around sometimes when people are touring and is still adding to the space. Bathroom and small gift shop inside. Some sexual content that will embarrass your middle schooler.
3/4/20 - Beautiful mosaic artworkI happened to pass by this place yesterday and as it was Tuesday and as a random day of the week that it is, the establishment picked this day to be closed. Thankfully, I had another day to explore the city and came to back here. This place is amazing! So much to see, so much artistic talent displayed in so many great ways. You just have to come to this place and let your eyes and mind wander. It is magical yes but it is ever so talent to intake. Just a massive masterpiece. Maybe to some it may not seem so, but it definitely is something that should be a “MUST SEE” when visiting the city of brotherly love.I loved every moment I got to spend here and would recommend this place to everyone, not just the tourist but even the locals
So cool! Helpful, friendly staff. Inexpensive online tickets. Highly recommended.
This is a must-visit in Philadelphia. Come explore this colorful mosaic art magic that took a man more than 16 years to put together.Get advanced tickets online because they are frequently sold out on weekends.I’m choosing not to put more than 1 pic so it doesn’t ruin your visit.Tickets are $10 and $2 if you have access card.
Superb Mosaic art! Need to reserve tickets in advance.
