Wonderful museum of fine art. Very interesting architecture. I particularly love the work of American painters from around the late 1890s. This includes Cecelia Beaux and Thomas Eakins. Check out his Gross Clinic. Both artists were local. Some din sculptures outside.
PAFA is on my top 10 places to take visitors who enjoy innovation and the arts. If you have a Free Library card, you can check out a daily pass for a free visit to the museum .Thats how I discovered PAFA. I was so impressed that I now get an annual membership. They celebrate women artists and are dedicated to exploring multimedia and multicultural themes. They change exhibits 4 times a year, and talks are free with a membership. The museum is accessible to public transportation-just a few blocks from City Hall. These photos are from a collaborative exhibit with Scholastic, celebrating top high school artists in the U.S.
This place has some amazing facts...check it out
Free admission on President’s Day, the day we visited. This art museum is spacious, neatly laid out, and well-curated overall. The ‘World War I and American Art’ exhibition was of particular interest, showing the public response to the war and what life in the battlefield was like, especially for those who experienced it first-hand.Stayed for two hours, which was enough to see all exhibits on two floors.
What a great museum! The architecture is beautiful. Love the sculptures and fountain in front of the museums. Also, the Rocky statue and the famous Rocky stairs!! This is a popular tourist attraction stop. All the hop-on hop-off tour bus stop at this location.Definitely a must visit place!
Amazing architecture ( Frank Furness) as well as the most amazing artwork! A definite must see for all art lovers!
Really beautiful
The space is beautiful. The staff was very nice. It makes me realize I don’t really understand art though.
Small but select collection. Dont miss the museum store or art supply store. Great place for instruction as well.
The best time I have had in a bar in a long time!! The entertainment was ongoing, never stopped, 4$beers all night long! So much fun and amazing great staff!!! Wish we had this in Philadelphia.
I cant talk about the school, but the museum is one of Philadelphias secret little treasures. If you are an art lover, it is well worth the visit.
Very good Jamaican food it was my first time trying their food and i was impressed i recommend it for any one trying Jamaican food for the first time. will be back. try the jerk chicken!!
Fantastic art work!Great collection of 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st century American and European Art.Wonderful experience.
The relaxed atmosphere, the inspirational architecture by Frank Furness, the knowledgeable, friendly staff, cutting edge exhibits. Thomas Eakins basically returns to life.
It certainly a nice visit. The staff were nice, I was being stared at by one employee but they were just doing their job that everything runs smoothly. I do wish that there were more to explore, it seemed like a place to spend one to two hours on. Perhaps having a more detailed description of the art or the artist would also be nice.
Great artwork. Friendly staff. A lot of the exhibits were under construction when we went that’s the only reason for 4 stars.
I visited to pick up a Lyft customer.
This is the best museum in the world in my opinion. The collection and architecture seem totally complement with exhibitions.I was sooo psyched when I’ve got there, spend 3hours...
A trivial note: This museum was Americas first Art Museum and school. A must stop visit for those interested in Philadelphias historical and contemporary culture and history.
Amazing architecture and one of the few surviving Frank Furness buildings in Philadhelphia.
Got into the gallery for free with some friends. Although there were a lot of great modern displays, this is not the place for someone looking for famous artworks or historical and world renowned art pieces. Still had some fascinating article pieces however.
A wonderful museum of American Art
Lovely gift store
What a great place! Gorgeous architecture inside and out. Plus paintings and sculptures! We enjoyed two very different exhibits. The Artists Garden centered on American Impressionism and the Garden Movement from 1887 - 1920. Some beautiful colors. Then we saw the Peter Blume exhibit - fascinating work. Just a nice place to spend the afternoon.
This looks like a beautiful place to attend and study art. PAFA has great recommendations from the Tri-State area where I live. My family and I attended an open house and fell in love with the professors and students. We were able to speak one on one with the 4year students and obtained a lot of info about the college. What amazed me more than anything was the fact that there were no cons about the school. It was honest information poured into our ears. We were able to see the results of many artists at their best. The professors and students are all extremely gifted. The art work was phenomenal. My daughter who also has a Good given gift and patients for art is looking to attend this college. I pray that she will be excepted in.Dr. H
A fun to walk pedestrian street. Amuse the street arts including a giant paint brush and crashed airplane with plants growing in the cockpit. Kids will have chance to explore and get excited and stop asking are we there yet.
Amazing architecture and one of the few surviving Frank Furness buildings in Philly!
Went there for formal dinner party. The art clearly speaks for itself. And the interior allows for awesome pics.
Wonderful museum full of art done by students from the beginning of the academy until today. Many grand pieces of work here
Awesome place to visit! Affordable because its free :). No drinks allowed, gift shop indoors, beautiful display and amazing staff. A view of the city on the top floor too
Great museum!!! It would be nice if they had some docents, at large, in the great gallery hung Salon Style . I really enjoyed the permanent collection.
Nice place. Dont forget to use your BOA card if you go the first week of a month.
This is an art treasure, that has supported and proudly displayed controversial of Artists of the times. For example,Thomas Eakens, circa 1900. To this very day, they display, controversial artists. Many of them, are non-white. Theiir school, even now, is at least;as important-as their museums. Dont miss the annual displays,of the current PFA student.
Really nice place to visit. If you have time its worth the trip.
This is an excellent experience to walk around their display/museum area in the old building. really nice.
A wonderful scholl of art. Many areas of study and enjoyable common areas as outdoors areas of art and interest.
Another terrific art museum in Philly.
Great museum with a balance of modern works and classic American artists. Great atmosphere too.
Excellent place to bring students to get lessons in fine art. Classes are not long and the tours are great for intermediate grade students.
Americas first Art Museum and school. A must stop visit for those interested in Philadelphias historical and contemporary culture.
Great exhibit and free on first Sundays
The jewel of Philadelphia art museums, a historical architectural landmark, and a walk through the history of American art, PAFA Is not as well-known or visited as it should be. It is always a joy to introduce friends to PAFA. A fabulous cafe for lunch or a snack and one of the best museum shops in the city.
Fabulous academic permanent collection as well as finely curated rotating exhibits.
Perfect place for those that appreciate art. Great place to visit with friends.
This is the school where Thomas Eakins took off the loin cloth off a male model (in front of male AND female students) to better explain the anatomy of the groin? FANTASTIC.
Diverse collection of American art. Historic building that is over the top classic beauty
Great exhibition space. Beautiful lighting. High caliber of work.

A not-so-hidden gem in Philly. Great collection of 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st century American and European Art.
