Philadelphia has a gem of a museum. From Monet to Picasso to Bellini to Frederic, there is something for everyone to see. The current selection of Asian art is astounding, specifically the Indian exhibits. The armor rooms were interesting since I hadn’t seen such a large collection before. I appreciated how spread out the art was so there was room to appreciate it before moving on to the next exhibit. We spent about 3-4 hours there and saw most of the exhibits. You could definitely spend more time if you were to read all the exhibits or want to study them more.
Just go!! Even if you cant see everything in one day. Which if your doing it right you cant. Its a wonderful experience. I love wandering around with no real agenda other than hitting the arms and armor exhibits.
Drove down from New York for the day and was pretty happy with my visit. Friendly staff, not too busy and some great art to see. There is something for everyone and once they are done with the work they are doing to the museum I would for sure go back again. My only drawback is that you aren’t allow to drink any water and that’s hard because with the masks on it just makes everything hard but I understand why they do it but I wish they would do what some museums I’ve been to have done and that’s set up areas where you can have a drink of water or something to just breathe for a moment .
The majestic Greek Revival Philadelphia Museum of Art, the third-largest art museum in the nation, has impressive holdings in Renaissance, American, impressionist, and modern art, as well as eighty period rooms. The collection is especially strong in Philadelphia furniture and silver, Pennsylvania German art, rural Pennsylvania furniture and ceramics, and the paintings of Thomas Eakins. The collection of medieval armor is a kid magnet. Pick up the family guide at the front desk for thought-provoking questions about the collection that will keep children engaged, and check out the year-round family programs, especially the summertime favorite Art Splash. The art deco Perelman Building across the street gives the museum additional gallery space and room to display its vast costume and textile collection, as well as photographs and contemporary designs.
My brother took my neice and I there and the exhibits was amazing. Its fulled with so much unique and distinctive artifacts, your eyes are going to have a field day looking at everything. We also enjoy re-enacting a scene form the iconic movie ROCKY where he runs up the stairs. It was definitely worth the trip and will visit soon again. #kedeshapowell
I love the little curatorial moments that make me smile. This visit, I saw a small monkey playing a musical instrument next to a huge classical painting of a troubadour. The humor! The COVID protocols felt right—I didn’t have problems a avoiding people, and it was wonderful to be inspired again. Just wish I had been able to go to the gift shop (the line was too long).
I have been going to this museum since I was a little girl and I have loved taking my son over the years! This is a great museum with lots of rotating exhibits. It is also huge so you can go many times and still find new things! We love everything about it but especially enjoy the rooms that are built like replicas of historic sites from different cultures.
I am not really an art museum kind of guy but I had a few hours to kill and this is right next to the Rocky steps. I did learn a few new things visiting and saw some amazing works of are including the sunflowers which I did not expect. The new exhibit, is a little creepy and is hard to understand but sure looks cool. Staff was friendly and helpful, bathrooms are small but in good working order and water fountains are drippy. Overall a good experiance but a one time thing.
Beautiful fall afternoon, museum closed due to covid, but truly stunning architecture and landscape
I live in DC so Im used to free museums but I have to say, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is well worth the admission price. Your ticket will also include other galleries like the Rodin Museum and the Barnes Collection and be valid for two days.I was amazed at the art on display and how close you could get to it! Theres a whole room for Ellsworth Kelly! The hallways are even gorgeous. Its also fun seeing everyone run up the Rocky steps and pose by the statue. Its a must for all art people!
One of the must places to visit when you are in Philadelphia. The entrance steps is made famous by Rocky Balboa . Its fun seeing everyone run up the Rocky steps and pose by the statue. With the famous Rocky steps stairs, be better gear up to RUN those STEPS ! The parking directly in front is $15 flat rate fee.The admission was fast and efficient. Staff is very friendly and helping . We enjoyed our day very much, spent about 5 hours there and enjoyed watching magnificent collection of art on display from different periods. The art museum seemed interesting and never-ending. They also had a couple of activities available for visitors to participate in within various areas of the building. Definitely up there with one of the nicest art museums Ive been to. Highly recommended to everyone visiting Philadelphia !!!
It is an amazing place to whom love history and art. I loved. Plus, there are the steps from Rocky movie, that brings a lot of tourists to the front of the museum. Amazing experience. It is a beautiful experience to walk through the builiding and know better the history. They have a great staff and are very helpfull. The common area and equipment are in great conditions. It is a very nice place. It is a great opportunity to go with your family and/or friends. It is needed to pay and get into a line to get in. Very well located, there are many signs to help you to find the builiding. Choose days out of great crowds so you can enjoy it better. There are buses stop close to the place and where to park around the quarter too.
Rocky Steps, pretty busy with tourists and local workouts but still a cool spot to visit. Dont forget about the statue of Rocky to the right on the base floor. The Museums architecture was stunning as well but we did not have time to go in.
Love the energy and the people, one of the most popularly places for the best city in the world, of brotherly love
Definitely need a whole day to see everything, if not two. Friendly staff. Loved the Future Exhibit at the time. A must see if visiting Philadelphia and have the time.
The collections are beautiful and it is extremely well curated. There is so much to check. Great way to spend a good half day. I am glad I stopped by during my Philly stay
Very beautiful museum with a wide range of works of art to see. There even are works from famous artists like Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso! You must visit this museum if youre in Philly!
I think they should have more black art exhibitBut the staff was friendly and helpfulHowever I do love visiting the arms and armor exhibits and my out-of-town house guess love seeing the Rocky statue
Just took the outside. Its nice on the inside but I havent went in yet. Heres some great structural. If youre visiting and u love art, go check it out
Beautiful collection. We came the day it was 80 degree. Nice and cool inside. Their cafe is also nice and clean.I would definitely come back for another round. They had 2 special exhibits I enjoyed.Japanese tea house could have been a bit better with presentation. Overall great museum.
This could possibly be one of the most beautiful and cleanest art museums ever. The exhibits are extraordinary and so well maintained. I spent pretty much the whole day here because there is just so much to see. I will definitely come back again in the future.
Great place to take pictures and enjoy your friends and family. This is also the location I proposed to my fiancee.
Highly recommend you guys to visit here. I had an super nice experience in this exciting place
This is such a fascinating place! From the rocky statue to the fountain and the sculptures! The artwork and craftsmanship methodically moves a person to the unique and rich history that Philadelphia has to offer! Truly a remarkable place to walk around, explore, and visit. This place is a must see if your in the area. The view alone is breathtaking and beautiful. So much character and architecture to explore and see!
Havent been to the inside but the outside is great. Even if you havent watched rocky, it its a place worth visiting. Nice architecture and nice surroundings. Only issue was the two homeless guys (dont think they were) forcing tourists to let them take pictures and charging money (20 bucks for two photos taken with my own phone? Come on. One dollar is more than enough).
I have a good time there. Photos with the Rocky statue.
You can sit down and have some fresh air .
Art attraction in PhillyVisit by here in the business trip, but run into national holiday. Its pitty that the museum is close and cant get in.But its impressive to recall Rockys moive.
One of the must visit places when you are in Philadelphia. This museum includes notable art and cultures not only of Western world but also of Asia. One day won’t be enough if you wish to see all the notable paintings, sculptures or the photographs that are in the museum. Also, don’t forget to take a picture on the Rocky statue in his unique style. Be prepared to be in a line as this place is mostly crowded with visitors. Every Wednesday and the first Sunday of month are pay as you wish days for the museum entry. Also, they are offering two day pass so that you can fully enjoy the museum’s facilities.
Atop the Rocky Steps is a gem of a museum. Spent a wonderful six hours here & didnt get to see everything.
It reminds me of Greece with those steps and colonies. I think they have an interesting impressionist gallery and surrealism section. I like the artworks of Venice. Not so many sculptures, but they are nice. Your ticket will include entrance to the Rodin museum, which is not so far from the museum of art. They have a nice dinner section below down. Its a nice place to visit.
I have to say Ive never been to a museum of any kind in my entire life so heavily patrolled and policed by security guards. Many of them were quite nice, but the first one I encountered seemed on a bit of a power trip and chewed me out for slipping my bottle of water under my face mask to take a sip while I was in a hallway nowhere near any of the exhibits that was also empty except for she and I and my two friends. Bitter and nasty as could possibly be, and ironically also didnt seem to have a problem walking up to stand about two feet away from me. I was then told about ten minutes later by a different guard that I had to either sling my backpack over my arm or wear it on the front of my person, which was incredibly awkward for the particular backpack I was using and if I had been told this up front I probably would have just left it in bag check or at my car. At one point one of my friend said he felt like he was being followed. Were all in our late twenties and not an unruly bunch by any stretch of the imagination and yet we were accosted several times, and it detracted from the experience to say the least. Im sure there is a way to protect the museums investments that doesnt involve making your employees breathe down all of the patrons necks.
This is a must visit location when in the Philadelphia area. Extremely iconic, to the rear is the stairs from Rocky and the statue, off of the front is the park and the water works. Its impossible to be anywhere around the PMA and not see something beautiful. You have the parkway right there and Kelly Drive. The museum itself is amazing inside, and affordable. Great destination!
Nice, open, comfortable location with a fabulous view of down town Philadelphia. Great place for photos. This place is also known as theRocky Steps as this is where the famous Rocky movie scene was filmed. We visited the location in the dark. We walked from down town and back again... safe, clean and well lit the entire way.
I love this museum and appreciate all hard working staff on taking great precautions due to COVID. Great work!Love contemporary section.
An awesome experience Wednesday night. The museum closes at 9 on Wednesday, and its nice to be able to enjoy the area in a less crowded manner. Walking being able to enjoy wine (which they serve) and see thought provoking ancient works and exhibits is an experience I didnt realize I needed. They also seem to have yoga classes which is something I hope to try next time
If you in Philadelphia you must climb the steps of the Art Museum. Dont forget to go in! Amazing!
Best place to visit if you are in philadelphia. You will need a whole day to visit it entirely. All the pictures are amazing.you will need a lot time for a single painting if you are art lover.
Never again. The customer service is absolutely the most atrocious thing Ive ever experienced. Within 5 minutes of our visit, upon leaning in to read a plaque, a woman told me, and not kindly, that I was too close to a painting and that guests are to remain at arms length.Less than 2 minutes after, in the next room over, a man told me I was wearing my tiny purse wrong. That it had to be over my shoulder, not crossbody. And in this case, he was also extremely rude. While I can understand and appreciate rules, the manner in which employees speak to guests who are simply trying to enjoy and appreciate the art makes all difference. What should have been an enjoyable and lovely afternoon was quicky soured by rude employees. It felt as though we paid $50 plus parking to be chased out and verbally harassed. I will never go back. Do not reccomend.
I very much enjoyed this museum. It is slightly smaller than the Met but very well organized. I very much like the Asian and impressionist collections. Putting Islamic, Hindu and Chinese temples together in a line was very creative and beautiful.
I had so much fun just enjoying the black culture! Love is always Love in Philly
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is fantastic! Take the time to read the captions and you will discover and learn so much. Beautiful artwork, stunning statues, amazing artifacts, and Rocky Balboa. I was there for 3 hours and didnt see everything so plan on a longer tour if you are going to read the captions which will greatly enhance your experience and enlighten you. The Spinx, Africa, Mexico, and Central America will be added in November.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is a fabulous museum. The permanent collection has some great pieces as evidenced by the exhibits that are bright together from within the museum as well as special exhibitions that are really fantastic. They are currently renovating parts of the museum so I look forward to seeing what it looks like when they are complete. If you live locally in Philadelphia and enjoy at museums, I would highly recommend a membership as it also allows access to the Rodin Museum down the street and also access to other museums across the nation. Parking is available in the deck behind the museum and is underground. Very convenient.
You love to see it When the Young Friends of Philadelphia Art Museum throw an event, you don’t want to miss it!At the annual YFPAM Fall Into Art Gala, there is a lot to see from people dressed to the nines and all the art work that the museum has on display. This review is long overdue for the 2019 gala, but I would like to highlight that going to a museum at night time is a must, especially if there’s an open bar!The next event will be in November 2020 and I hope to see you all there!
One of the best museums with a lot to explore. Keep a day in your hand as that wouldnt be enough to complete all the sections.
The building itself is actually huge and grand.Museum costs $20 for adults to enter but it was well worth it as there were hours worth of exhibits to walk through. It is spread across two floors and house a lot of old armor, pictures, structures, even whole courtyards and rooms. Not a place for really young kids as some exhibits are not housed behind glass.
This 1 of the many great MUSEUMS in our great city of PHILADELPHIA! This museum has some of the finest ART in the world. Get 2 this place if ur visiting our great city of PHILADELPHIA. COWBOYEDD.
Love this museum. The impressionist and contemporary work is some of the best anywhere. You could spend all day here, but I often just pop in for 2 hours or so. My favorite exhibit is in the very back of the contemporary section. Cy Twombly’s Fifty Days at Iliam. So, so beautiful!!
I was in awe at all the wonderful art collections they had. It was truly wonderful to have witnessed it for myself.
Always an amazing time whenever I go! I always end up seeing something new! Of course I have to visit my favorite artists as well but it’s nice to be refreshed with certain things that I forgot they had! Staff is always nice and courteous. Beautiful museum, I always take my friends/family who come to visit Philadelphia.
I havent been here since I was in middle school, but I remembered a lot of it. Cant say I appreciated it then though I do now.I came early October 2020 so COVID is a thing, but this was the emptiest Id ever seen the museum which makes sense given the current situation. I felt like the impressionist and contemporary art portions were the most exciting, but for kids they might enjoy the Japanese tea rooms and the Asian and Indian art areas. Some things to note- theyll take your temperature via what i can assume is an infrared camera situation. Theres hand sanitizer provided at the entrances. as of early october they have a lot of the first floor under renovation so you are generally forced to take an elevator to the exhibits. You might be able to get a staff member to give you access to take the stairs back to the entrance when youre trying to leave and the line is 4 groups long and no elevator in sight. All the staff were very helpful and making an effort to distance. The first couple exhibits were a little more crowded but that makes sense, and they encouraging distancing with diagram signs and capacities for each room. Youll still find people trying to trap you into the capacity of 1 rooms and not giving you room to exit but thats a visitor problem not a museum issue. For comparison though I find the grocery store more crowded than this museum so it wasnt awful.
Parking in front of the washington statue is free (at least on weekend). And not so crowded due to covid haha
Magnificent. Youll need more than 1 day to visit this wonderful museum. No worries, tickets are valid for 2 consecutive days and Fridays, its open until late.
Memorable experience, life changing! Also the met in New York even more so...
You really get what you pay for. I have to recommend them to all my friends and will be back again.
It is incredible how large this museum truly is. It’s easy to lose yourself here for hours on end without having to rehash anything. The first Sunday of every month is ‘Pay What You Wish’, but I do recommend getting their early as there’s a line out the door by noon. The first floor has a lot of the ‘hits’ but the second floor has some incredible exhibits with full scale recreations of historical buildings, cloisters, etc. One of the must dos in Philadelphia
Must visit spot in Philadelphia!!! Lots of great arts with different subjects, contemporary and modern including Vangual, Picasso, Monet .....Also American art, early Europium, the India temple recreation just unbelievable, they even have a Japanese tea house, I’m a huge art lover, Philadelphia art museum is one of the most inspiring one .Recommend to come on Thursday do a two day tickets, they often has concerts on Friday, if buy the ticket on Thursday, you get to go the concert and to Rodin museums also for free, 3in 1 for only 20 /adults What a deal !For small budget, come on Wednesday night is pay as you wish, also a good chance to explore the fine arts, for 2-3hr, but if you got the time, this is the money worth to spend!!
Great place to visit and spend some time
Easy to (paid) park in the garage then walk into museum. Walk through sculpture garden as well. So much to see so pace yourself. The exhibits are easy to walk though and even though some places are under construction, there is fabulous works of art to appreciateTips are dont wear a backpack or any large item that you may bump people or back into precious artwork. The very polite staff will firmly suggest you wear your backpack in the front of you. This includes big purses. No walking around with a beverage or your snack. There is a well stocked cafe and restaurant to have refreshments. I had a great time!
Don’t miss out the pay as you wish Sundays!
Beautiful place in and out So much to see and great location for photography
Who doesnt love those famous steps?! Always see people running up and taking pictures! Overall Price wasnt bad, lots of famous work, and great rainy day trip!
Wonderful to see art again. Got there at 10 and went to far end of 3rd floor. Almost no one there.
This is the best art museum Ive ever been to in the United States. I could spend several days here and still be looking for more. Everyone was helpful and was able to share so much good information about all the exhibits. This was the highlight of my trip to Philadelphia.
Hello. I had the privilege to visit this museum. One of the best in the nation. Went there on a wednesday night when the tickets are voluntary donation. The bad side of this is that you have not enough time to see all the galleries but still it was a great experience. It is a bar to have a cocktail or a beer but you are not allow to bring it inside of the galleries. This a museum in your not to miss list.
Always a pleasure to visit this museum. Amazing internationally recognized collection. It’s currently under construction, so a bit confusing to enter. But it was so cool to see a part of the museum I’d never experienced, arriving at the north entrance. Best to focus on a few areas and break up your visit into several parts. It’s too easy to slip into an Instagram mentality and do the equivalent of scrolling through the images. Go for quality over quantity and truly look at the art.
This museum is great!! The exhibits were so interesting. The place is clean and full of art and information. The people are all friendly and well informed. We spent the whole day there and could have gone back the next day. We had brunch at the restaurant inside and the food was exquisite.
The museum is huge and a beautiful place to spend some time. I do not understand a lot about art but I love museum in general.Everything is very good organized and you can find yourself easily. The rooms are numbered and there are a lot of staff everywhere if you have any questions.Very good experience!
Another impressive collection of european art. Love the Monet paintings, they have more than the the Met in NY. The architecture transplants from Europe and Asia are well replaced, and it is a pleasure to walk throught the doors, portals or go around the closter.
A super Art Museum! We were not disappointed. It has something for everyone. Selected works of art from throughout the ages. Each piece of art was First-Class.
Pay-what-you-want-Wednesdays and staying open late for us fluorescent light daytime dwellers is a great deal. I love this place regardless, whether Im sledding down the steps in the winter on a trash can lid or taking someone on a date in the spring, or even just roaming alone out back in the summer garden (Anne dHarnoncourt I believe), having a bad time here just doesnt seem possible. The exhibits rotate often enough that it stays interesting, there are a multitude of famous paintings, or works by famous artists, or amazing works by lesser-known artists, and the setup of some areas is just visually stunning as you walk in.If youve never been, youre missing out.
Iconic location with amazing views of downtown Philly.
Amazing to think that whole Asian reception halls were transported and European parlors recreated. You are literally surrounded by art in some areas to include the archway, ceilings and walls. And to top it off, we caught Pay As You May Wednesdays and a free guided tour.
HUGE museum. We had about 3-4 hours there and still felt like we had to rush to see it all. Too bad there is a fee to enter unlike museums in my hometown... but we got a small discount buying from our hotel instead. The Asian arts area is amazing and I wish we had started there to spend more time.Entering via the Rocky Steps (east side) is a great touristy moment, but note there is a street level entrance on the north side of the building.
Great. Amazing. All the paintings are originals. You can find great art heritage within several galleries. From European art to middle east asia exhibition.
Even though the ground floor is closed due to construction, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is still a world class museum. I was there with a group. We were given a private tour of their current show revolving around the Impressionists. Our documents program was most interesting. The theme was Through the eyes of the Impressionists.
I love this place, Philly is my home town. I have spent many hours walking this magnificent building. I brought my fiance here as she loves art and is creative. Give yourself at least two days to experience the museum. Truly, trust me, your body and mind will thank you.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is a masterpiece in itself. The museum is comprised of so many beautiful exhibits and artifacts. The place is really good option to visit with family. Moreover, the museum offers many activities for kids where they can have learning as well as fun. Learn while having fun.I went here with my family and the children in our family were very happy with this place. They enjoyed themselves and got to learn so much. The kids were so happy that they keep on asking about our next visit. This is a wonderful place.
Very nice museum lots of great art. Cool special attactions. Rocky statue is there. You can run up the steps and pretend your Rocky from the movie
Very nice place to visit. The weather was just perfect for walking around the grounds. There’s so much to do around this area. This is an iconic sightseeing must in Philly. I can’t wait to return.
Great art beautiful place even at night
Love, love, love! Beautiful building and surroundings, stunning Rocky view from the top of the stairs, remarkable architecture, great extended hours on Wednesday. The interior was also impressive as well as the exhibits. The only issue I had was with the map not reflecting correctly (or just confusing) the spaces, so I never found Rubens’ works.
An expansive collection of art from Contemporary to Medieval. There are impressive room displays with elegant vintage furniture, an arms and armor exhibit featuring rare horse armor, and so much more. I absolutely loved the inclusion of wood work and architecture. If you are only visiting for a day, I would recommend mapping out which exhibits youd most like to see to avoid being overwhelmed. There are pay what you want days every Wednesday evening and the first Sunday of every month, and admission is free for PA ACCESS or EBT cardholders. Students and seniors receive a discount, and anyone under 18 is free.
One of my favorite places to take my daughter, such a wide variety of amazing art.
Cool place to visit while in Philly.
This museum is amazing and the display of art history is breathtaking! Everything is perfectly displayed and the staff is very friendly! Be prepared to lose track of time while exploring this awesome place!
Great place to visit if you want to do something low key. Great bike trial nearby too.
Worth the trip just for the medieval armor gallery
Can’t wait to go again. We went on Halloween and it was so fun getting to see the events they hold for families and kids. Amazing collection and love that they’re open Wednesday evenings.
One of my favorite museums in the tri-state area. Can easily spend multiple days here seeing everything. Spring and summer are the best times. The gardens surrounding are in full bloom; perfect for a stroll with the family, significant other, or yourself just to clear your mind. Views are great year round, though!
Made famous from the Rocky Balboa scene.. Running up those same steps is amazing. 2 floors of amazing art work. Maybe it was just the time i went.. Alot of construction inside and out were taking place making the experience not as exciting as expected. None the less a BEAUTIFUL piece of history
PMA is a world-class collection, definitely worth a visit, or even a journey.I live in NYC all my adult life and go to the Met very frequently. But I was born in Atlantic City and visit PMA whenever I visit family back home.PMA has many, many great artists paintings that are not featured in NYC (for example, Snyders, Saenredam, Masaccio). To know Marcel Duchamp, one *must* visit PMA, which holds the worlds greatest collection of Duchamps art masterpieces. The PMAs Chinese ceramics collection holds possibly the most important specimen in the U.S.: a stunning Ru ware specimen, a simple brush washer, the only Ru ware on the East Coast (the only other American specimens being in Cleveland and St. Louis [as far as I know]!!)Of the countless billions of Chinese ceramic objects made before or since the legendary imperial Ru kiln was in production (for only about 25 years around AD 1100-1125), none has garnered greater praise than the roughly 73 Ru ware specimens surviving worldwide. The PMA has given the dish greater pride of place, and provides due explanatory context for visitors. Could any Chinese ceramic in this collection be more important? To my mind, no.
This was my first time to see this museum and it didnt disappoint. It has something for everyone. The building itself is absolutely beautiful. The paintings, artwork and the actual display of fashion amazing. We had a great time and enjoyed every minute of it.
They rebuilt an Asian village, Middle Ages Church, rooms from most parts or history. The Friday night we went we had the fashion exhibit there with dancers, free tea and painting. I always love the ancient weapons and armor section as the Craftsman ship is always amazing. Then all the Monet and a few Van Goghs round out one of the best American Art museums in America. They have something for everyone!
